About the Author Mark Oestreicher is a partner in The Youth Cartel, challenging youth ministers through holistic professional coaching, strategic consulting, transformational events and inventive resource development for youth ministry. He has had a broad experience working in churches in roles ranging from junior high pastor to executive pastor. He has served as vice president of ministry resources and later as president of Youth Specialties in San Diego, an organization that trains and equips church youth workers. Oestreicher has authored or contributed to more than sixty books, including extensive youth ministry curricula and books like A Beautiful Mess: What’s Right About Youth Ministry, Understanding Your Young Teen: Practical Wisdom for Parents, Middle School Ministry: A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Early Adolescents and Youth Ministry 3.0: A Manifesto of Where We’ve Been, Where We Are & Where We Need to Go. He actively continues in his calling to middle school ministry by volunteering with young teens at Journey Community Church in La Mesa, California, where he leads a small group of middle school students each week. Mark Oestreicher found himself astonished at what he saw. Yes, the raw pain of the Haitian people was overwhelming, but who could have expected the hope that they had in the midst of it?What is hope and where does it come from? 1 Cor. 13 tells us the three cardinal virtues are "faith, hope and love." Yet how is it that we know comparatively little about hope? Hopecasting is a deeply insightful and well-written sleuthing of this concept. Oestreicher unpacks the process whereby we come to a place where we are candidates for hope.Who among us doesn't struggle with failure and disappointment? But on the other side of our wreckage, the possibility of a better day pokes up its head. Oestreicher delves into that place of emptiness that he calls "exile." Illustrating from his own life and from Scripture, he shows us that the way out is not happy talk, but honesty. As we're honest with ourselves about the disappointment and distress we feel, we can move on to a place where we can be honest with God.Oestreicher acknowledges that is a difficult place to be. What one feels most there is fear. Only by pushing beyond fear do we find true hope.Hopecasting has cost Oestreicher a lot. "Marko," as he's affectionately called by his friends, had written a magnum opus on hope. Hope isn't just for self hope is for others. It isn't something we stir up, it's a gift we've been given to search out.What I loved about this book is the brutal honesty and vulnerability of the author, allowing us into what must have been his own private hell. Ostreicher removes the polite mask that most Christians feel forced to wear and allows us the privilege of staring into the abyss through his eyes.Interlaced with timely stories and inspiring examples, Hopecasting is well worth the investment of your time and money!
