Do you remember a world where prayers at football games and graduations were not a problem? Do you remember when most boys wanted to grow up, get an education and a job, marry a woman, have children and be a husband and father? Do you remember when most girls wanted to grow up, get an education and a job, but also wanted to marry a man and be a wife and mother? How did everything get so crazy? This study looks back at 160 years of American culture to search for the answer. True solutions lie in the hearts and lives of Christians. However, we must be courageous enough to allow the Sword of the Spirit to reach into our hearts, correct our flaws, and strengthen us to live deliberate, rededicated lives for Christ. We must find the courage to live our faith, use our talents to positively affect our homes, congregations, and communities, and lead searching souls to the truth of the gospel. Teresa Strickler is an active member of the Wasatch church of Christ in Clearfield where she has taught ladies' classes and children's classes. She has also spoken at many ladies' days and family encampments. She has earned her BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and is currently teaching a Certified Nurse's Aide class in Clinton, Utah. She and her husband have two grown children and four grandchildren.

Don't think that this book is only for women. It is a great read for men and women. The author has written a very in depth, insightful book that gives us pause to evaluate the current status in America.

Decided to use in our Bible study for women at the Church of Christ in Washington, PA. Now in mid-study and it is very comprehensive, extremely thought and prayer provoking, and filled with all the tools for each participant to be rejuvenated and inspired to do their part, courageously, to aide in turning the current trends in a positive direction. It will increase your faith! I love it! - Sherry M.

Lettenmaier I slogged through the book only because I live in Kampala and was curious to see what the author said. I was really disappointed by the author's cynicism about foreign aid in Uganda. I know that NADS has been wracked with corruption and theft. But, the book makes one believe that all British aid workers are alcoholic and drugged up sex addicts on the take with no belief in what they do. It is a terribly dark book. I think it was meant to be a spoof but I failed to see the humour in it. I only hope that people not familiar with the many successful and effective foreign aid programs in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa are able to see this book for what it is. A cynical and tawdry failed attempt at comedy.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Conspiracy Everywhere By David Wineberg Killing O’Reilly is classic parody, reminiscent, or should I say redolent, of the old National Lampoon, with a large dollop of the old MAD magazine. It’s razor sharp, to the point, and accurate. It is instantly familiar. It has cutesy footnotes that are supposed to be writer’s notes to staff. And it’s brief. Because any more of this any you’d throw the book against the wall except it’s an e-book. Someone needs to look into that. We have our rights. No one should be able to take that away from us. Look it up.Once, Bill O’Reilly appeared on The Colbert Report, and excused all his extremist tossoffs by claiming “It’s all an act.” Stephen Colbert was so stunned he left character for a moment, saying “If you’re an act, what does that make me? What am I?” So here come the Bowmans with a parody of a parody. It works.David Wineberg

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good stories with little practical advice By I Teach Typing This book is a great collection of case stories demonstrating where collecting lots of data has helped industries, coupled with a futurist fantasy of how collecting and using lots of data could help solve lots of problems. The real life use cases are fascinating and the domains covered are respectably broad (everything from life on the farm, to medicine, finance, energy and many other domains are covered). In each area the authors cover history (sometimes predating electricity), through the state of the art and then make statements/forecasts for how the careful use of data can improve the world. The examples covering companies doing real things with huge amounts of data are excellent. However, the futurist predictions, which vacillate between provocative and vacuous, are more annoying than useful. The thoughts on the area that I know well, medicine and big data, where the authors point out the need for revolutionary change in diagnosis and treatment, echo the most forward thinkers in academic medicine but the reader of this book is left thinking that this is a tractable problem not the quagmire that exists. While there are a lot of good ideas here, fundamental advice on how to compile the right data is largely missing. For the techies, there are inspirational stories but no algorithms or discussion to help you accomplish your tasks. For the people who think big data is just a marketing phrase, this book offers a lot of proof that companies can do great (new) things with huge amounts of data. Unfortunately, the reader of this book will not have real guidelines to help collect and use the right data (be it big or not big).

I know Rob from my IBM days so I was eager to review the book. Big Data can often be over-hyped. Rob and Patrick utilize a series of stories to make Big Data tangible. They discuss how farmers can use Big Data, why doctors will have math degrees and whether actuaries will become data scientists. They also offer a Big Data Reference Architecture including business and logical views. The book is a great business-oriented overview for anyone who is looking to understand Big Data use cases. Well done Rob and Patrick!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, but Not Actionable Read On Big Data By Big Data Paramedic First and foremost, the book is commendable with nice stories that make it a compelling read. Every chapter starts with a historical perspective of the industry ( farming), what are the criteria required for success ( example:For Insurance predicting cashflows, Demographics etc) , some short story and then the chapter ends, moves to the next section. For most of us, this book will just expose you to more case studies that are everywhere. My suggestions are follows:LEARNING BIG DATA AND DATA SCIENCE: If you want to learn the nuts and bolts of Big Data and Data Science(Information technology Twins), a good start would be Coursera dot org ($50 - $500). An expensive course in Harvard($8000) if you can afford it. But you do not need a car mechanic to enjoy Driving. Read These Books> Hadoop: The Definitive Guide> Big Data: A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live, Work, and Think by Viktor Mayer-Schonberger (Mar 5 2013)> Big Data at Work: Dispelling the Myths, Uncovering the Opportunities> Data Science for Business: What you need to know about data mining and data-analytic thinking ( THE BEST START YOU CAN HOPE TO THINK OF )

Best PDF Ebook The Driver: He's Got Escorts In His Caddy And That Ain't Good, by Greg D'Alessandro

George Donato is an unemployed screenwriter, having just lost his staff-writing job on a cable sitcom. Desperate for cash, the neurotic George takes a job driving escorts - hired by an ex-con. George quickly learns the job is too dangerous (he’s officially a panderer), so he tries to quit, but the ex-con won’t have it. George continues driving escorts, falls in love with one - a sweet Brazilian, who dreams of being the next Warren Buffett. Things take a turn for the worse when George and his escort go the house of a famous sitcom star and witness a female studio head beating up the star. They escape the house, but find out the next day the sitcom star has been murdered. Soon, George becomes a suspect in the murder. Meanwhile, the Studio Head tries to buy George’s silence by offering him a six-figure deal on his animated children’s screenplay. George is caught in a moral vortex – should he lie and have a career or should he tell the truth and bring down a studio head? Lost in the underbelly of L.A., the only thing he can do is… keep on driving. Like Elmore Leonard’s Hollywood novels GET SHORTY and BE COOL, THE DRIVER: AN LA STORY skewers an industry built on nonsensical hierarchies and the personalities that hold all of the power in the film industry—and have no intention of sharing it with a nobody like George. Unlike Leonard, however, D’Alessandro writes what he knows: back when he was a struggling, unemployed screenwriter, D’Alessandro took a last-resort job driving escorts for a busy Los Angeles escort agency. (All of the clients, including the not-so thinly veiled bold-faced names, were actual agency clients.) Besides the obvious publicity value, this insider’s look at the escort industry and the semi-autobiographical nature of the story gives THE DRIVER added commercial appeal. With his self-deprecating (and frequently hilarious) quips, THE DRIVER has in George Donato an appealing protagonist with the same appeal as Lawrence Block’s comedic burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr or Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum.

Many books that get the "hilarious" tag are not, and suffer from plot deficit to boot - but not this novel. It's a page turner with a sympathetic protagonist who finds himself in an untenable situation, peppered with one-liners & witty banter. I did not want to put this one downWell done, Mr. D'elassandro. I look forward to more from this author.

By Andrew who should read more I only write reviews when I really love something and this touched me. It's equal parts hilarious and moving. Buy it and check it out. I was having a rough week and when I picked this quirky novel up, I immediately felt better. The relationship between him and his mother is hilarious, but also something you can relate to. And his slide into doing terrible, but awfully funny things for what he thinks is a justifiable end reminds me almost of a modern-day Ignatius Reilly. I highly recommend this very readable, very excellent, undiscovered gem of a story. Read it and share it.

I want more!!!!!!This book is hilarious!!!!! I found myself laughing out loud from the beginning to the end. And boy, do we need more laughter in our lives!George is neurotic yet lovable, you just want him to win. The characters are rich and colorful and the story just gets crazier and crazier.I agree with someone who said this would make a great TV series or movie! What's really insane is that this is based on the authors real life experience -So here's to you author... I want more... please keep George coming!

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the sixth installment in the bestselling Miss Fortune series. When Celia Arceneaux was elected mayor of Sinful, Louisiana, Fortune Redding expected trouble. The woman has an unmatched talent for making the worst of any situation, especially if it means getting revenge on her sworn enemies Ida Belle and Gertie. At the Fourth of July celebration, an explosion rocks Sinful and it’s not from fireworks. Most people assume it was a moonshine still, but when evidence points to a meth lab deep in the bayous of Sinful, Fortune realizes how dire the situation is for the tiny town. With Carter on medical leave and no one left at the sheriff’s department who can handle the investigation, Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie decide to take matters into their own hands. This is (another) mission for Swamp Team 3.

Fortune is still in Sinful, Louisiana hiding out from Ahmad, a very bad man who wants her dead. When the vindictive new mayor (whose election is being contested) fires the sheriff and appoints her lazy, good-for-nothing cousin to the position, the townspeople of Sinful know they’re in trouble. Things go from bad to worse when an explosion rips through the air. At first, no one is too concerned because they’re convinced it’s nothing more than a swamp still exploding. However, when Fortune and her friends learn it was a meth lab that blew, they get very worried. Someone’s cooking drugs in Sinful and they want to know who’s involved. With Carter (a Sinful deputy and Fortune’s beau) still on medical leave, and the new sheriff sitting back with his feet up, Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie once again team up to find the people responsible for the explosion before the drugs hit the streets of Sinful. What an enjoyable read! Soldiers of Fortune is a laugh-out-loud story that keeps the reader entertained from beginning to end. Author Jana Deleon has developed a wonderfully wacky group of characters. Fortune has grown since the first book. She has gone from being a loner to caring deeply for her new friends. She is developing a relationship with Carter that both scares and excites her. It bothers her that she has to lie to him about who she really is, and she worries that things will change when he finds out. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things work out for them.I’m not sure I’d want to move to Sinful permanently, but I sure do love my visits there. LOL I can’t wait to see what’s in store next for Fortune and the gang. I do recommend this series. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Happy reading!

By Illinois Reader Book 6 in the series is as much fun as books 1 through 5, but finally Fortune, Gertie, and Ida Belle managed to pull one over on Carter. Of course that may only be because he is still recuperating and not actually officially working... I have to admit I laugh out loud while reading this series, and race to the end in record time to find out what is going to happen. Now I am stuck waiting until summer for the next book to be written and released. If you have never read any of the books in the series, stop right after reading this review and take care of that. This is a series, and while each book concludes the antics and excitement happening, the next book continues right where we left off. If you don't read them all and in order, you are going to be scratching your head and wondering what they are talking about. Most of the laughs in the current book are built on past escapades by the Swamp Team 3. So do yourself a favor and grab a copy of Louisiana Longshot (A Miss Fortune Mystery, Book 1) -free for kindle-and join in the fun. Unless you are a total sourpuss (and we know you aren't since you are reading this) you will be glad you did. Heck, these books are great to re-read while waiting for the next one to be released!

By Chloegirl This time around our favorite trio- Fortune, Ida Belle, & Gertie - become involved in tracking down those responsible for setting up a meth lab in Sinful. And if you've read any of the previous books, whenever these three get together there is action, excitement, & laugh out loud moments! The only thing wrong with this book is that it ended too soon & now I have to wait until June for the next installment!

Weight-Loss Solutions is a synthesis of three experts’ individual quests. The book integrates over seventy-five years’ worth of experience in weight loss and nutrition. Joe Gary has extensive hands-on experience from work in alternative healing centers, Margaret Schlesinger brings her experience in coaching clients in lifestyle change, and Shannon Avana contributes her expertise in how the mind works. The authors successfully combine intellect, emotional understanding, and body. These are generally held as separate pieces, but each discipline taken individually fails to consider the whole being. Weight-Loss Solutions is an integrated system, which is why this program is so uniquely successful. Other programs focus on eating appropriately but ignore the psychological causes of weight gain. Addressing the entire person is the secret to successful and sustainable weight loss.

By Ashley Pichea I have loved Lynette Eason's writing from the first time I read one of her books, so I was very eager to dive into "When a Heart Stops."As I began to read, I found myself trying to remember a lot of the details from "When the Smoke Clears" {book one in the Deadly Reunions series}, as those details were constantly being referenced in the first several chapters of the book. I found it difficult to recall some of the key elements {having been several months since I'd read book one}, and I found myself missing key details of the story due to a lack of recall. This made me wish that I had a copy of book one easily accessible to re-read immediately prior to reading book two."When a Heart Stops" is not able to be a stand-alone title.Once I was able to get past the inability to recall the missing details, I found myself lost in the story, frantically turning pages to see what happened next, constantly trying to guess the twists and turns that were about to be revealed.I have to say - while I definitely had my suspicions about the outcome, details in reveal made the ending next to impossible to truly guess with accuracy.---Disclosure: I received a free copy of "When a Heart Stops" from Revell in exchange for my honest review.

You are an awesome author, but...*sigh*...must you torture me with yet another cliffhanger??Don't worry, dear reader, I mean this in the best way possible! While I'm not the ideal model when it comes to patience, I'll be the first to admit a cliffhanger has its advantages--such as making you that much more eager to get your hands on the next installment! And such seems to be the case with Eason's Deadly Reunion series. When the Smoke Clears left the readers with many questions answered...but many more left unanswered! And as When a Heart Stops comes to a pulse-pounding ending, the reader is left longing for the release of the next book.I always love when a suspense book is written so well that *I* am left on edge and jumpy right along with the characters. And in When a Heart Stops there was several times I had to stop reading and check to make sure there wasn't any creepy psycho-killers looking at me through the window, (Though it probably didn't help that I read this book at night after everyone had gone to bed and the house was eerily quiet! Haha!)As for the characters...they're awesome! I've loved Serena ever since the first time I read about her (In the Women of Justice series), and getting to find out more about her previous life really made her come alive and endear herself to me even more. Dominic was...wow! He was good-looking, a total gentleman, had a cool-sounding name (I know, I know!) and...in short, he was totally sigh-worthy!The fact that Serena was a medical examiner might be a bit disturbing for some readers. While she does do several autopsies during When a Heart Stops, Eason doesn't go into too much detail. So those with weaker stomachs shouldn't get too grossed out. ;-)I love reading a book that will creep me out. And the whole Doll Maker Killer certainly got me to that point! As is usual for Eason's novels, I had a pretty good idea of who the serial killer was about halfway through the book, but it didn't hinder the book at all. It actually kind of enhanced it even more, in my opinion. When a Heart Stops is sure to keep you on your toes from page one! Be prepared for a suspense that'll creep you out!I reviewed this book for Revell. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.

OK, I was hooked to buy #2 in this series after an unfinished ending to #1, but the writing just isn't good enough to pull me into buying #3 after a totally unfinished ending to #2. I feel the author is trying to emulate Dee Henderson, but Ms. Henderson is a better writer. I also wasn't pleased with they type of violence portrayed in the book. Sorry guys, I won't find out about what happens to the rest of the reunion class.

An entertaining introduction to the quacks, snake-oil salesmen, and charlatans, who often had a point  Despite rampant scientific innovation in nineteenth-century America, traditional medicine still adhered to ancient healing methods, subjecting patients to bleeding, blistering, and induced vomiting and sweating. Facing such horrors, many patients ran with open arms to burgeoning practices that promised new ways to cure their ills. Hydropaths offered cures using “healing waters” and tight wet-sheet wraps. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby experimented with magnets and tried to replace “bad,” diseased thoughts with “good,” healthy thoughts, while Daniel David Palmer reportedly restored a man’s hearing by knocking on his vertebrae. Lorenzo and Lydia Fowler used their fingers to “read” their clients’ heads, claiming that the topography of one’s skull could reveal the intricacies of one’s character. Lydia Pinkham packaged her Vegetable Compound and made a famous family business from the homemade cure-all. And Samuel Thomson, rejecting traditional medicine, introduced a range of herbal remedies for a vast array of woes, supplemented by the curative powers of poetry.   Bizarre as these methods may seem, many are the precursors of today’s notions of healthy living. We have the nineteenth-century practice of “medical gymnastics” to thank for today’s emphasis on regular exercise, and hydropathy’s various water cures for the notion of regular bathing and the mantra to drink “eight glasses of water a day.” And much of the philosophy of health introduced by these alternative methods is reflected in today’s patient-centered care and holistic medicine, which takes account of the body and spirit. Moreover, these entrepreneurial alternative healers paved the way for women in medicine. Shunned by the traditionalists and eager for converts, many of the masters of these new fields embraced the training of women in their methods. Some women, like Pinkham, were able to break through the barriers to women working to become medical entrepreneurs themselves. In fact, next to teaching, medicine attracted more women than any other profession in the nineteenth century, the majority of them in “irregular” health systems.   These eccentric ideas didn’t make it into modern medicine without a fight, of course. As these new healing methods grew in popularity, traditional doctors often viciously attacked them with cries of “quackery” and pressed legal authorities to arrest, fine, and jail irregulars for endangering public safety. Nonetheless, these alternative movements attracted widespread support—from everyday Americans and the famous alike, including Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, and General Ulysses S. Grant—with their messages of hope, self-help, and personal empowerment.   Though many of these medical fads faded, and most of their claims of magical cures were discredited by advances in medical science, a surprising number of the theories and ideas behind the quackery are staples in today’s health industry. Janik tells the colorful stories of these “quacks,” whose oftentimes genuine wish to heal helped shape and influence modern medicine. From the Hardcover edition.

Marketplace of the Marvelous: The Strange Origins of Modern Medicine, by Erika Janik

From Booklist Conventional medical treatment in nineteenth-century America was a high-risk, low-reward venture—a dangerous and not very effective path to recovery. Dubbed “heroic therapy,” the usual remedy for most ailments involved some scary combination of bloodletting, blistering, and purging (with liberal administration of laxatives and emetics). The side effects of this therapy, along with dismal results, opened the door for a variety of alternative healing methods. Historian Janik chronicles the rise and fall and renewed popularity of alternative medicine. Alternative healers tended to reach out to women (recognizing their role as caregivers in the family) and tapped into the prevailing mind-set of Americans, who thought of themselves as self-reliant. Some of these remedies have persisted and prospered: manual manipulation and adjustments (by chiropractors and osteopaths), hypnosis, and the use of botanic medicines. Others have had less success and staying power: phrenology (reading the topography of the skull), magnetic healing, and hydropathy (treatment with cold water). Oscillating between arousing feelings of hope and doubt, alternative medicine in America endures. --Tony Miksanek

Review “A must-read for medical history buffs, whether mainstream or maverick.”—Publishers Weekly“A thorough, informative history of the many eccentric narratives that make these quack sciences so interesting and important to modern medicine.”—Kirkus Reviews“Historian Janik chronicles the rise and fall and renewed popularity of alternative medicine.”—Booklist“Erika Janik’s survey of alternative therapies hums with strange ideas and even odder characters.”—Boston Globe“[Janik] offers full and fair accounts of the origins, rationales and fortunes of [these] alternative practices.”—Wall Street Journal“[Janik] is especially good at delineating the history of women.”—CHOICE, recommended review“A must read for those in the natural and alternative health industry.”—The Herbal Collective“Marketplace of the Marvelous is well served by Janik's training as a historian. The observations of the misfit margins that she explores are both keen and cutting—she is as evenhanded as she is graceful when describing the turbulent first half of the nineteenth century, and draws clear connections between modern medical theory and its early influences.”—The Source Weekly“Erika Janik’s Marketplace of the Marvelous is a rare achievement: both entertaining narrative for the curious reader and valuable resource for the serious scholar. I wish I’d had it when writing my biographies of prominent nineteenth-century women, as easily seduced by the promised cures of pseudoscience as so many others in the era of brutally “heroic” medicine, with its tortuous treatments of bloodletting, blistering, and mega-doses of mercury. Janik rightly traces many of our contemporary notions of healthy living to early crackpot remedies—drinking plenty of water, regular exercise, massage, herbal medicines. In this remarkable volume Janik summons up a vanished world of visionaries and cranks who were indeed both marvelous and modern.” —Megan Marshall, author of The Peabody Sisters and Margaret Fuller: A New American Life“Astronomy was preceded by Astrology. Modern medical science was preceded by snake oil and homeopathy. Janik tells a compelling story, in graceful prose, of what happens when error, greed and fashion  rule the marketplace of medical ideas. What Lewis Thomas called ‘The Youngest Science’—medicine based on cell and molecular biology—is young, indeed; and this fine book reminds us of how far we have come.”—Gerald Weissmann, MD, author of Epigenetics in the Age of Twitter “An engaging romp through more than a century of irregular medicine, from the kookiness of phrenologists and mesmerists to the excessive claims of snake-oil salesmen and Thomsonian botanical practitioners. Erika Janik explores these medical byways with both skepticism and respect, showing how their often-derided practitioners were pioneers (at times unwittingly) in the exploration of placebo effects, psychotherapy, the importance of exercise, disease prevention, and patient engagement in their own care—elements that have been gradually absorbed into mainstream medical practice. It’s a fun read and eye-opening from start to finish.” —David Hellerstein, MD, professor of psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Center, and author of Heal Your BrainFrom the Hardcover edition.

Erika Janik has researched the history of medicine, particularly medicine in the United States from the 17th century to the present and has uncovered some gripping information that should alter the manner in which holistic medicine is viewed today. While more and more people are struggling to get off the obesity wagon and the chronic disease train and finally paying attention to nutrition, forsaking processed foods and fast foods and refined sugar etc, and acknowledging the importance of daily exercise, paying attention to pollution and its effects on our environment, and embracing Eastern medicine in the form of acupuncture and meditation – while these changes are gaining hold of our thinking, Erika Janik has explored the origins of the current forms of medical advances and made some rather startling discoveries that deserve widespread acknowledgment. In a book sprinkled with old photographs and minibiographies of such people like Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Mary Baker Eddy, Samuel Thomson and many more – names that put faces to incidents and trends so that we can connect more easily – Janik discusses the origins of snake oil (many types actually contained viable medical cures such as quinine for malaria, etc), phrenology, hydropathy (the importance of baths and of hydration by drinking copious amounts of water each day as a means of staying healthy or combating disease), homeopathy, patent medicines, osteopathy, chiropractic, hypnosis, phlebotomy (blood letting) and other branches of alternative medicine. She also discusses the rather primitive status of medicine before the 20th century – doctors were not in general well-educated nor particularly intelligent and certainly not interventional diagnosticians but rather the man who was called when auntie felt puny to offer very basic archaic thoughts. Yes, it is all very humorous from one stance, but all of her information, once thoroughly digested, reveals that much of what is practiced today has its roots in some of what was thought to be quackery – only now we recognize those simple things like ‘medical gymnastics’ as healthy exercise programs, the use of increased water intake to hydrate the body, and many of the other things that the ‘scientific revolution’ deemed quackery are now accepted as viable modes of therapy for many diseases.Erika Janik writes extraordinarily well. She has taken the time to research her subject thoroughly and provides copious documenting footnotes and references, while at the same time she has a keen sense of humor that places all of this information in perspective. Brilliantly written and thunderously appealing, this is a book every doctor should be required to read, and everyone concerned about the rise of today’s machine driven medicine should own. The book will make you laugh and will also raise an eyebrow and utter a gasp. Very highly recommended for everyone. Grady Harp, December 13

Here, Drink This - A Fascinating History of Medicine By Tamara Thorne Marketplace of the Marvelous is a wonderful read if you're interested in the history of medicine in the United States. The war between "regular" allopathic and "irregular" alternative medicine goes back to the beginning and in this book, Erika Janik ably describes the evolution of the two paths in our country and how they have come to integrate in many ways. After an introduction which is one of the best overall essays on the subject I've ever read, Janik delves into the details of the origins and evolution of irregular methods and the people behind them. Herbal cures, water cures, phrenology, Mesmerism, homeopathic cures, manipulation (osteopathic and chiropractic) and patent medicines are all here. And more.As a fan of The Road to Wellville (book and movie), I got a special kick out of the water cures, but there's so much more. So many cures (regular and irregular) were crazy, many were useful, and so many people were hawking their various wares that it was difficult to know what was best. And the war between the two branches, each calling the other's methods completely useless or poisonous (frequently correctly) is just fascinating. While reading head bumps has fallen out of practice, some of the alternative methods thrive today and many have been inculcated into "regular" medicine. Just think: at one time exercise and drinking enough water were considered irregular quackery! Watching this evolution -- along with the stories of the outrageous cures (on both sides of the aisle) is an absolute delight. This book is full of fascinating facts and loaded with information. I came away better informed and knowing this is a book which will have a permanent place in my shelves.

Failed Theories of Healing and the Emergence of Modern Medicine By Gadget Fan This book provides a comprehensive account about the various theories of treating the sick that arose in the 19th century, and how these roots survive into the present. It describes the interactions and competitions between them, and what remnants have survived into the present. It runs the gamut from failed theories such as hydrotherapy and phrenology, curing through patent medicines or mental techniques, to early scientific technologists. It is full of details I didn't know about, such as Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills, which was sold for over half a century, and promoted by millions of almanacs sent out in English, Spanish, and German. Many newspaper accounts from the time are drawn upon as sources.I was aware of most of the high points of the book, but the level of analysis here is much more thorough than just knowing that these different theories were out there. The author has done a tremendous amount of research to bring the 19th century alive. Detailed accounts are provided of encounters with particular practitioners, their tactics and their critics. At the same time, the developing professional education systems are covered, licensing, and numbers of practitioners trained, numbers of patients, and legal issues. For example, a chapter near the end traces the diverging paths of osteopathy and chiropractic, both with their roots in pre-technological treatment of pain, with osteopathy moving into mainstream medicine, and chiropractic remaining on the edge. I didn't know that during WWII, the US military took in only MDs (removing them from the towns in which they had practiced), thus advancing the prominence of Osteopaths, who people then started going to for their medical needs. It closes with a chapter about the roots of alternative medicine and its presence today. If you are interested in the medical explorations of the past and roots of today's medicine, this book is a very informative read.

A day without laughter is a day wasted. – Charlie Chaplin A smile lasts, but for a moment, but the memory of it can last forever. My father started me on enjoying clean humor at an early age. I have always loved good humor, particularly puns, shaggy dog stories and short one and two liners. Through the years I recorded the better ones I enjoyed and a few years ago I began sharing them with old friends. Now you can enjoy. As an example: God: “Whew! I just created a 24 hour period of alternating light and darkness on Earth.” Angel: “What are you going to do now?” God: “Call it a day.” It only takes: One smile to make someone feel special. One second to offer kindness to someone who needs it. One laugh to lift the spirits of a friend. One person to make a difference, It takes you. I hope this book helps you pass along a smile weekly if not daily.

Gregory Nightingale is a revered author, known as much for his rambling, post-modern philosophies as his ability to create relatable stories. Eccentric, apathetic, and in love with both alcohol and sensation, Gregory unwittingly becomes an active participant in efforts to tear down his reputation. Can he contain his antics long enough to clear his name? With a cast of witty, realistic characters, Swans and Swallows hilariously explores the complexities of human nature and modern relationships. It is a must-read for anyone who likes to laugh.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very well written! By Jake Gregory is a witty author that is on a path of self destruction......the story, while humorous also delves into the reality of addiction and sensational living.I couldn't put it down!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well-written, complex, satirical piece (Twelve Days of Christmas Part 7) By Don Kidwell Book has some genuine comical passages at first such as times Gregory turns introspective like "High school teachers: the harbingers of droll" , "Businessman only die once, but it always happens decades before they stop breathing" and "Do I look like a horse? Maybe I am a horse - people nuzzling me and shooting me. That also explains the celery and carrots." But for what is billed as a comedy, I soon found the protagonist in this book to be a rather sad character given his alcoholic addiction, womanizing ways, and paranoia. When Jane shows up saying, "You know Greg, I've had a lot of fun tonight...I really did miss you. At least, after the years of hatred wore off" I had a feeling this was not simply a mere farce. For me, Gregory put it well when he said, "I have no control over myself. No control over anything...Why can I not stop?" Tho the highlight would have to be the ever so brief appearance of Coral that sums up my experience with this book by saying, "But you've got the filler confused with the important moments. Your first kiss only happens once; you only get one shot to see your oldest child smile for the first time; and if you fall in love and do it the right way, that only happens once." More a book about tangled relationships than anything, I thought, and for that I did like it.In my final lead up to Christmas I thought it would be fun to review one book a day related (in name only) to the dozen elements comprising the poem "Twelve Days of Christmas" before hanging up the reviewer hat and giving it a rest (Up next will be a variation on the "eight maids a milking" theme for your amusement.) Until then, Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. engaging and cheeky By me A quick read, I laughed a ton and have a new barrage of one liners to interchange with friends. Accessible and witty!
