1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not bad By A Reader I'm not sure why the previous reviewer was so critical. I thought this book was way more interesting than a phone book. There were a few typos and mix ups between first and third person, and other little editing problems. The author is pretty critical of churches and pastors, and the main character says she believes one way but her life says she actually believes another way. But it kept me interested. Like being inside the head of an actual Christian hypocrite. I couldn't look away. I read it in one sitting. Hopefully in future books Paula will actually read her bible and do what it says.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A gooey, gushing writing style By Amazon Customer suggesting a fifth-grade creative writing course. Also, a boring social background consisting solely of hypocritical, flirtatious, money grubbing Christians. And a totally disorganized structure. Do yourself a favor: Read an old telephone book instead.

Inside this book I reveal proven methods for making positive changes in your relationships that can lead you into enjoying a much more serene and happy life.

Relationship trust issues are usually at the very heart of the problem.

I've read a lot of books on jealousy, have struggled in this area most of my life, and have learned how to overcome feelings of relationship insecurities.

In this book I share with you wisdom collected over the past 40 years through being in relationships, working with counselors, and attending thousands of support group meetings designed to teach people to learn how to deal with difficult people.

Some Ideas from This Book About Jealousy

Don't treat your feelings lightly when they are sounding off with blinking, bright-red lights, trying to tell you, "Hey, something's not right with this picture!"

So what's my point? Take the time to really see the situation you are involved in where jealousy is occurring in an honest way. Seek out the opinions of other people so you can get a different perspective. If you are not being treated with respect, don't be a doormat. Stand up for yourself....

I was in a previous relationship where my ex-girlfriend was totally jealous and it completely crushed our relationship. Even worse, the jealousy sprouted out of nothing except the fact that she had been hurt by previous relationships which she brought into our relationship. Therefore, jealousy needs to be taken care of if you begin to feel it. This book gives you clear strategies on how to recognize it and immediately take action before gets worse. I like how you author begin the story with a realistic, and relatable situation from his life. I just wish it were a little longer and provided a few more examples throughout the book.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Great discussion and help with jealousy issues! By Zoe Jealousy can destroy even the strongest relationship if not handled. Letting your partner or yourself remain jealous and not getting to the bottom of it can take away the trust that you have established throughout your partnership. This book is a well thought out book about the topic as well as a sensible guide to understanding jealousy, the traits you or your jealous partner may possess and how to address and manage the issue. It is a practical approach to understanding why you might be feeling the way you do and it does not gloss over the topic by just telling you to put your feelings away. I really appreciate how much the author put into this book and I appreciate that he has shared his own experiences while showing how the techniques can be applied. I really enjoyed reading this book and I can see now how past relationships were destroyed with jealousy. I personally, walked away from this book feeling I can handle jealousy from friends as well as my life partner in a far more constructive way. Well worth the read even if you don’t think jealousy is an issue for you, you will be surprised by what you will learn.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Jealousy be gone By castle2000 My recent relationship was plagued with jealousy because of my boyfriend's trust issue and I told him many times that he should stop being so jealous. We talked about it a lot and I figured that his issues stemmed from his insecurities and that was the main thing he needed to work on - try to stop being so insecure. This book helped him rebuild his trust in people and we are a much happier couple now.

One of yoga’s foremost researchers – former monk Sanjay C Patel – lucidly reveals the scientific truth of the mystical Yoga Sutras. Using inspiring information gathered over 40 years of peer-reviewed research and practice, Patel helps you understand the spiritual claims of the Sutras concerning your true Self – your hidden potential and your higher consciousness. Patel shows you how to connect to your inner Self and the entire world around you. Said the ancient yogis, “The enlightened can see their own soul and the whole universe with their eyes perfected in yoga.” Patel also explains the new evidence of what the Yoga Sutras call ‘Samadhi.’ This is the central subject of the Sutras. Let Patel lead you to an incredible condition of happiness and wisdom. It also awakens you to intuitive knowledge of people and your world. Its past, present, and future. Your past lives. Clairvoyance. Extra-sensory perception. Supernormal powers. Spiritual charisma and magnetism. You will also learn how yoga helps you stop judging things, people, and your physical self. You stop criticizing your persona and appearance. You stop criticizing your friends and personal setbacks. You see through illusions and burst through your ego. You live with true self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-liberation. You learn to love yourself for who you really are. You love yourself unconditionally. You treat ‘success’ and ‘failure’ equally. That means with honor. Everything is respected, accepted as it is, and you respond with equanimity. This is Samadhi and it's the central experience and aim of yoga according to the Sutras. Because of this fresh wave of inspiring research, we are now able to understand the mystical and almost unintelligible Sutras. The profundity of these findings cannot be underestimated. Learn how to discover the true, blissful, and empowered you. Dive into your inner treasures. Boost your health. Explore these new discoveries and make the Yoga Miracle work for you. About the author Sanjay C Patel is a former yoga monk of 20 years. He lived at a monastery in India and has introduced yoga, spirituality, and prayer to thousands of students. His discoveries have received the highest international recognition by appearing in peer-reviewed, scientific journals. He was invited to present his findings at the prestigious International Congress of Historians of Science. He has also appeared on numerous radio programs and spoken at universities nationwide. Spirituality is winning! Says Patel: “It is wrong for people to tell others what to think and believe. Everyone has an intellect, heart, and spirit of their own. Show them the evidence and let them arrive at their own understanding. This is the true, open spirit of spirituality.” www.IsGodRealorUnreal.com

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! An excellent and inspiring source for yoga students and teachers alike By Colleen Parker My medical doctor advised me to take up yoga and meditation to relieve stress. He highly recommended this book. It has turned out for me to be a treasure of information and wisdom. The author Sanjay C. Patel is a former monk who teaches yoga and meditation from his decades of experience and learning. He also backs it up with years of medical research. His own research is published in international journals. He also narrates many inspiring stories told by ancient yogis who were profound story tellers. He describes the various differences and similarities between Buddhist and yoga beliefs. He devotes a large portion of the book to an important but often ignored topic of yoga called "Samadhi." It is a state of pure consciousness and connectedness with all things. It is apparent that in this sublime condition, ancient yogis described our universe and earth in substantial detail. Also extraordinary are new findings that suggest yoga and the bible may have been connected in ancient times. This is a remarkable and easy to read book. All yogis - newbies and experienced teachers - should read it. Without it your knowledge of yoga is missing its heart. Together with it, this book will transform you into a yogi sage of modern times!

It is a way of living "the good life" that everybody in today's world craves for!Well I always thought yoga was boring as I am into playing various sports which is very active. But this book portrayed to me the other side of it and as i practiced doing yoga it kept me active through my day. It gives out a positive vibe! The scientific facts mentioned in the book are indeed a miracle about how the ancient yogi's performed yoga in their daily routine. which gave them power of the mind and body millions of years ago. And now we see the modern world following the same foot steps, which is a good deed.As this book changed my routine for the better, it will definitely be a good change for anyone who indulges them-self in it.

Great Weekend Read; Predictable Ending For Me By StylishCurvyGirl Elandro Tezmont comes home after a 15 year bid for a crime he didn't commit looking to avenge his dead Mother. One of his old friends hooks him up with a job with the plug and he ends up in a love affair with 2 women and a 3rd one that was off limits. In this book Elandro finds out that freedom comes with a lot of new life lessons and he learns more about death and love and also finds out how his past ties in with his new boss. How does our fascination with technology intersect with the religious imagination? In TechGnosis—a cult classic now updated and reissued with a new afterword—Erik Davis argues that while the realms of the digital and the spiritual may seem worlds apart, esoteric and religious impulses have in fact always permeated (and sometimes inspired) technological communication. Davis uncovers startling connections between such seemingly disparate topics as electricity and alchemy; online roleplaying games and religious and occult practices; virtual reality and gnostic mythology; programming languages and Kabbalah. The final chapters address the apocalyptic dreams that haunt technology, providing vital historical context as well as new ways to think about a future defined by the mutant intermingling of mind and machine, nightmare and fantasy.

TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information, by Erik Davis

Amazon.com Review The gap between the technological mentality and the mystical outlook may not be as great as it seems. Erik Davis looks at modern information technology--and much previous technology--to reveal how much of it has roots in spiritual attitudes. Furthermore, he explores how those who embrace each new technological advance often do so with designs and expectations stemming from religious sensibilities. In doing so, Davis both compares and contrasts the scientific attitude that we can know reality technologically and the Gnostic idea of developing ultimate understanding. Although organized into reasonable chapters, there's a strong stream-of-consciousness component to Davis's writing. His expositions may run, for example, from information theory to the nebulous nature of Gnosticism to the philosophical problem of evil-all in just a few pages. It's as if there are so many connections to make that Davis's prose has to run back and forth across time and space drawing the lines. But the result, rather than being chaotic, is a lively interplay of wide-ranging ideas. His style is equally lively and generally engaging--if sometimes straying into the hip. In the end, he succeeds in showing the spiritual side of what some may see as cold, technological thought. --Elizabeth Lewis

From Publishers Weekly In the new millennium, will we drop our messy bodies and upload our mindsAand soulsAinto tidy android containers? Why not, argues Davis, a Wired contributor whose hip, erudite first book argues for the survival of a kind of gnostic mysticism in the age of information technology, carried over from the specifically Christian movement of late antiquity. Davis marshals an impressive, even exhausting, amount of evidence from Eastern and Western literature, history, philosophy, scripture and popular culture to support his sometimes opaque position on the matter of technology's impact on human spirituality and vice versa. In wave after wave of hybrid vocabulary ("mythinformation," "netaphysician," "cyberdelia," etc.), he offers a dizzying implosion of simulated hypertext, leaping from an authentic Gnostic poem to a '60s rock concert to the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook to the latest cultic catastrophe. This deluge of information and theory manages to be quite entertaining ("Already in Homer, Hermes is a multitasking character"), but, ultimately, readers may be unsure whether to applaud Davis's conclusion that the phallic vector of technological development has been supplanted by a womblike matrix. But it's not always the destination that matters, and readers who hang on will find that surfing Davis's datastream makes for an exhilarating ride. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Davis, who has written for magazines as diverse as Wired, Rolling Stone, and Gnosis, here tackles the mythological and Gnostic implications of our continual push for new information technologies. He does bring together perspectives from a variety of disciplines, allowing some fascinating insights into the congruence between our quest for religious understanding and our technological progress. Unfortunately, Davis's reliance on unnecessary anachronisms (e.g., "the Gnostics imagined [the afterlife] as a kind of multileveled computer game") and his sometimes jarringly colloquial approach undermine the promise of the material. The book also suffers from a certain lack of critical examination and would have been stronger had Davis paid more attention to contextualizing and analyzing his material. Libraries looking for titles on the theological implications of technological progress would be better served by Jennifer Cobb's Cybergrace (LJ 3/15/98).ARachel Singer Gordon, Franklin Park P.L., ILCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Stunning Debut Unveils Hermetic Underside To Cyberculture By Alex Burns (alex.burns@disinfo.net) Erik Davis' fine writing has graced the pages of The Nation, Village Voice, Lingua Franca, and 21.C for many years. 'Techgnosis' grew out of an essay that he wrote for the seminal cyber-crit anthology 'Flame Wars', edited by Mark Dery.Unlike other authors, Davis has an incredibly open mind and lets the disenfranchised speak for themselves. There are some stunning sections on Scientology, the Gurdjieff Work, John Dee, the Extropians, and the interface between early 1980s role-playing games like Gary Gygax's 'Advanced Dungeons and Dragons' and contemporary VR technology. Davis examines many of the integral examples of spirituality featured across many cyber-crit books, but his elegant writing and common sense inject a powerful dynamic into this work not often found elsewhere. He doesn't have the same hysterical tone often found in anti-cult literature for example, but is also balanced and can be subtly critical (confused yet?).There are some strange omissions, notably an excellent piece Davis wrote for 21.C on the Mormons that appears to have been dropped by the publishers at last minute. Despite this, 'Techgnosis' is a strong debut that clearly conveys how the spiritual has transmutated into the technological at the end of the millennium. Fully referenced, Davis' book is a clear indication of the maturation of a defining authorial voice.

A magical investiagion of 3000 years of being and technology By mpesce@netcom.com Davis sets his sights high - to explain the philosophical and mystical history of the West against the development of our technologies. While the argument is often made that technologies are value-neutral, Davies proves - conclusively - that our technological fancies rise from our intrinsic spiritual natures (explicit or implicit), even as every new scientific discovery equally spawns a new era of spiritual "research". From the Emerald Tablets of Hermes Trismegistos to the noospheric prognostications of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin - who may have predicted the Internet a half century before it became a physical reality - Davies shows that being and doing, in the guise of spirituality and techology, are the twinned halves of the cultural DNA within which we operate.Delightfully, this book is not just a dry retelling of history; Davis has a point of view, which is neither fancifully utopian or pessimistically Orwellian, but instead focuses on the reality of t! he isomorphism between what we believe about the world around us and what we believe about the life within us.This book isn't just a good read, it's a necessary read, a clever antidote to all of the business-as-usual explanations of the age of information, and contextualizes our era against the last 3,000 years of history of the West. Anyone interested in the history of science, the history of religion, and the history and ethics of technology should read this book.

Looking to the future with roots in the past By Vargr I was not expecting a classical Gnostic text when I picked this book up, perhaps that's why I'm not as dissapointed as others who have read it. I was looking for a work in the Gnostic tradition (not Tradition). Davis makes some compelling connections between the old and new seekers after Truth. References cited in this book were also good, and steered me toward other interesting works.

Personalized Breast Care: Guide to Cosmetic Surgery, Breast Cancer and Reconstruction is a straightforward guide to breast health. The editors, Dr. Garrett A. Wirth, Dr. Karen T. Lane, and Dr. Keyian Z. Paydar found a balance between a complete medical textbook and a basic understanding of breast care to create this easy-to-read and comprehensive guide. The authors understand that not all areas of the book will apply to everyone. The goal is to provide information for all concerned with breast health. Read the chapters that are of most interest to you, and reference the rest as you wish. Chapter 2 is chock-full of medical lingo and can be used as a direct reference rather than read straight through, if need be. With chapters dedicated to the diagnosis progress, various therapies, and post cancer treatment life, you’ll be better prepared to face the disease. There is also a chapter dedicated to the education of family and friends in responding to a loved one’s cancer diagnosis. Plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures vary in intensity and necessity. Find out everything you need to know about breast augmentation, breast reduction, mastopexy, and breast reconstruction surgeries. From establishing expectations and recovery guidelines, you can be better prepared for a consultation and the resulting procedure. If you are simply curious about any aspect of breast health including anatomy, evaluation, and breast cancer therapies, this is your guide. Never having had cancer I wanted to understand it more from a patients perspective and really dive into what can be done when you are given a life threatening diagnosis. Excellent New Guide for Mobile Apps Development and Marketing - Explains Big Picture but Give Rigorous but Practical Advice By Bill Aulet There are lots of books out there ABOUT entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship that are interesting reads but very few that really help you to BECOME a successful entrepreneurs. This is one of those rare books that takes on the challenge of doing the latter and doing it well. The author analyzes opportunities in a very intelligent manner (love the effective use of data in the book) and then lays out the decision points to frame the problem/opportunity and decision tools to resolve the decision point. Once this is done, he then goes through and gives very specific recommendations and resources that make this book much more concrete than other books. It gives the reader/student/aspiring entrepreneur a clear pathway to optimize the chance of success for his new app. It is very well done from seeing the big picture to giving the reader the next step they should take -- and why.I was a bit dismissive of "apps" when they first came out but now it is clear they are the future as the world moves from desktop computers to mobile apps and this is an invaluable tool to help the next generation in their "gold rush" for billion apps -- or to just have a super positive impact on the world. Don't be fooled by the gold and billion dollars clickbait on the front, these lessons can help you if you are a social entrepreneur, corporate entrepreneur or really any type of entrepreneur involved in the mobile space.

By Ron Immink How to Build a Billion Dollar App: Discover the secrets of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time by George BerkowskiDo you want to become a billionarie? We do. Actually some of our clients are billion dollar companies. When we reviewed Peter Thiels book, from one to zero, we were hoping we would find the answers and help some of our 10-100 million clients to become billion companies.Peter ThielPeter Thiel suggests you should focus on next practice and create a monopoly based on something unique. That he total net profit that you earn on average over the course of your relationship with a customer (Customer Lifetime Value, or CLV) must exceed the amount you spend on average to acquire a new customer (Customer Acquisition Cost, or CAC).That you should only start your company with people you know very well and that purpose, cult and culture binds it all together. To be honest, his book is near to being glib. It is only interesting because Thiel wrote it.George BerkowskiGeorge Berkowski also writes about how to get to a billion. But he describes the journey from idea to a billion in detail. Using his work with Hailo as the template. It is a cracker. Should be compulsive reading for every entrepreneur. For every business.Combines the real life journey with a lot of the latest thinking on design, organisational development, data, marketing, communication, innovation, customer care, finance, fund raising. And because the talks about it in the context of apps and software it is at high speed.MobileSome interesting statistics about mobileA typical smart phone user looks at their phone about 150 times per day’The smart phone in your pocket today is about 5 times faster than a Cray-1 supercomputer (1979 vintage), and as powerful as the most powerful computer in the world in 1987.A Cray-1 couldn’t make phone calls, or tell you where in the world you were standing, or tell which direction was north, or even allow you to read your email.China ended 2013 with 618 million Internet users, of which 500 million were mobile Internet users. In 2015, the number of smart phone users is expected to hit 2 billion.Mobile now accounts for 40 per cent of time spent on social media.Facebook has passed the 50 per cent mobile-usage mark and Pinterest is at 48 per cent.Together, these two players are responsible for 56 per cent of social-media-generated e-commerceIn 2013, the average US consumer spent an average of 2 hours and 38 minutes per day on their smart phone and tablet. That’s almost one-fifth of the time we spend with our eyes open. Those consumers spend 80 per cent of that time (2 hours and 7 minutes) using apps and only 20 per cent (31 minutes) on the mobile web75 per cent of people are always within five feet of their smart phone, and 10 per cent have used one during sex.Sharing information about ourselves is intrinsically rewarding and gives us a few squirts of dopamine every time we doAndroid will run on 1.9 billion devices by the end of 2014, compared with about 700 million for Apple’s iOS operating In 2012 there were about 4,000 unique devices running Android; in 2013 it was around 12,000.About 600 different companies manufactured those devicesWearableThe age of powerful, helpful, life-changing, wearable computers is upon us. From mobiles, wearables, Google glass and Oculus VR. Imagine how the world is going to look like when they reach maturity (and it will be quicker than you think, read “The second Machine age” if you don’t belief it).THE IDEA AND GETTING TO ONE MILLIONTake your pickThe idea needs to be big and it needs to be global as mass appeal is a core component of far-reaching disruption. Here are 67 human univerals that are global in its appeal:Age grading, athletic sports, bodily adornment, calendar, cleanliness training, community organisation, cooking, cooperative labour, cosmology (study of the universe), courtship, dancing, decorative art, divination (predicting the future), division of labour, dream interpretation, education, eschatology (what happens at the end of the world), ethics, ethno-botany (the relationship between humans and plants), etiquette, faith healing, family feasting, fire making, folklore, food taboos, funeral rites, games, gestures, gift giving, government, greetings, hailing taxis, hairstyles, hospitality, housing, hygiene, incest taboos, inheritance rules, joking, kin groups, kinship nomenclature (the system of categorising relatives), language, law, luck superstitions, magic, marriage, mealtimes, medicine, obstetrics, pregnancy usages (childbirth rituals), penal sanctions (punishment of crimes), personal names, population policy, postnatal care, property rights, propitiation of supernatural beings, puberty customs, religious ritual, residence rules, sexual restrictions, soul concepts, status differentiation, surgery, tool making, trade, visiting, weather control, weaving. The billion dollar founder statistics0.07 per cent of funded startups become billion-dollar companiesOnly 43 companies managed it.It takes 7 years. The average age of founders is 34.The average number of founders is 3.They have worked together for many years before. All founders have a technology background.80% had earlier start up experience.33% were from Stanford. The majority of founders had a technical degree.More then half are based in Silicon Valley. The 5 business models1. The first is gaming, where users pay for a virtual service or good.2. The second is e-commerce / marketplace, where users pay for a real world good or service.3. The third is advertising (or consumer audience building in the case where the company has not yet switched on the advertising).4. The fourth is Software as a Service (SaaS), whereby users pay for cloud-based software (typically via a subscription model).5. And the last is enterprise, whereby companies pay for larger-scale software (again, via a subscription-type model). The first stepsStart with a big problem, a novel solution and a huge market ready to adopt it. Then build a great product that users love, and then prove they love it with data showing they are willing to pay for it. Combine that with a robust strategy that attracts users systematically and at a cost that is less than what users will potentially generate in revenue for your app.Get out there and test your great idea for an app, put it on paper, and start getting feedback. As you flush out a great design, start prototyping it. Test all the time. His tips at start up stage:Three key roles need owners:someone must lead the product visionsomeone needs to build the technologyand someone needs to be focused on getting users and generating money.Ideas are a penny a dozen. It’s execution that’s worth money.Once you’ve combined your huge idea with a huge market, it’s time to find a cofounder. Look for chemistry, skills and passion. Get a test drive. Go on holidays together. No experts, advisors or coaches.Creating the identity for your business . Creating a robust name and brand from the very beginning is critical.A great name is 10 times better than a good name. First Impressions count. Is your name short, catchy and memorable? Is your name distinctive? Is your name clever? Can your name become a verb? Do you own the domain? Spend money on designing logo, brandingThe most important question you can ask yourself, as an entrepreneur, is, How much do I want to sacrifice to achieve success? The companies that generated revenues from day one are the ones who wield the real power, create the most value and, most importantly, control their own destinies. To iOS or to Android? A great approach is to focus on one platform and make it a success. iOS is easier.Focus only on the absolutely necessary and ensure wow. Learn from the best and study screen shots. ThenStart with paper and screen shotTest everythingMap out the wire frames (and test them)Test the user journey (and test them)Create a slide by slide PowerPoint outline (and test them)Get a designer involvedTranslate your wireframes into pixel-perfect mockups of your app (and test them)Focus on functionUse Protio.ioStart codingGet a user groupMeasureTest everythingThe metricsAcquisition: users downloading your app from a variety of channels and users enjoying their first ‘happy’ experience on your app;Retention: users coming back and using your app multiple times;Referral: users loving your app so much they refer others to download it;Revenue: users completing actions on your app that you’re able to monetise.CAC, or the Customer Acquisition Cost, the price you need to pay for someone to download and install your app.CPD, the Cost Per Download. If you’re looking for investmentYou should be able to show a solid download-to-user-acquisition rate of around 80–90 per cent (always shoot higher). You should be able to activate upwards of 50 per cent of your users. In terms of retention, this depends on whether you’re a gaming app (where the leading apps keep people coming back daily) or an e-commerce app (typically, users come back 1–4 times per month). You’re generally going to see only a small proportion – generally 2–5 per cent – of users who actually invite a significant number of others to download your app.At this stage, any metrics around revenue are going to be great news – and a bonus.Dealing with investorsKey lesson at this round with investors. Make sure you understand everything and don’t sign if you are not comfortable.GETTING TO TEN MILLIONYou now should have an app that users LOVE. That means that at least 40 per cent of users saying they would be ‘very disappointed’ without your product. The triggersYou need to discover the triggers that drive people to want to download, use and talk about your app. Ask yourself:The top five emotions you want your app to elicitThe top fifty words that describe your appThe top fifty words that describe your brandThe top customer needs your app satisfies and benefits it delivers • The top problems your app solvesThe top fifty words that describe your competitors’ appsThe top fifty words that describe your competitors’ brands. The enginesYou now need to build the engines. The growth engine and the revenue engine. You need a systematic way to grow your user base. That involves being able to test new user-acquisition channels, test their effectiveness and then figure out what kind of lifetime value (LTV) they generate. Similarly, you need to validate how your app is going to make revenue. And you need to start recruiting. You need to start building a communication infrastructure. You need n organisation structure. His learning:Small teamsBecome product centricTest, try, measureSay “no”, keep focusKeep shippingDo not outsource developmentGet a VP of engineeringAlways recruitKill features to find out what users really loveCreate an organisational DNA of customer supportDeliver delightUse Net Promoter ScoreThe customer is always rightCreate new metricsAverage transaction value (ATV)Annual revenue per user (ARPU)Life time value (LTV)Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)Share the metrics across the companyDon’t put in analytics too lateFocus on emotion (love or hate). That means focusing on business model, profit margin and product development. The questions• Should I go for growth (acquire more users, generate more revenue, at the cost of profitability)?• Should I aim for profitability (sacrifice some user and revenue growth but retain more control and potentially position myself to fund my own growth and not give away more of my company to investors)? His tips:Share and learn from your VC portfolio brothers and sistersGet a VP in marketingBranding becomes more importantMeasure everythingDo not rely on traditional channelsFocus on FacebookFocus on big dataKeep users comingMeasure retentionBuild a CRM systemFind the fanaticsStay relevantFocus on empathy with your customersStart focusing on internationalisationBe smart in your strategyLanguagesEvery character on the screen countsLook at ChinaCreate a playbookEnsure your customer acquisition cost (CAC) to be less than your lifetime value (LTV)Focus on viralityYour viral coefficient, K = X × Y × Z, where:X is the percentage of users who refer or invite other users to download your app;Y is the average number of people they invite (over a specific period of time);Z is the percentage of people invited who download your app. There is another metric that affects your virality: cycle time. This is the average amount of time between when an existing user initiates a ‘referral’ (invites a new user to the app), and the moment the new user downloads the app. The shorter this period is, the faster you growHire for tomorrow, not for todayKnow your organisational chartKeep recruitingOrganise Friday updatesOrganise all hands meetingsCreate clarity on targets and goalsCommunicate the metrics dailyHire a scrum masterThe typical timing between closing a Series A funding round and landing a Series B round is around 600 daysFIVE HUNDRED MILLIONThe moment you have been waiting forAt this point all the rules change. You have reached an inflexion point. Scaling is where you – the founder and entrepreneur – create the most value and generate financial rewards. This is, after all, the moment you have been waiting for – the time to show the world that your app can become the undisputed leaderHis lessons:Beware of premature scalingNever hesitate to filter out the weak, under performing employees.Don’t hire reactively. Hire because that’s the absolute best thing to do.Over-invest in your management team.Craft a clear vision for what an optimal organisation would be like to take your company global, which helps to recruit the right people into the right roles.Hire big hittersScale the marketing teamDelve deep in the dataYour business model will start blurring (online goes off line)Always be recruitingScale engineeringKeep product centricDon’t organise around technology or skills or functionsMake sure that you build teams into self-empowered squads or unitsApply the two pizza ruleInvest in people, not infrastructure. Hold out for exceptional engineers, the 10x employees, the ones who deliver above and beyond. For all future hires, no matter for what team, the final say would be made by a senior executive with this ‘power of hire’. This ensured that there was an incredibly high – and consistent – bar for hiring.Fire quickHave an onboarding programmeCommunication is keyUnderstand the difference between makers and managersMinimise meetingsMeetings disrupt makersFacebook has a loose policy called ‘No-Meeting Wednesday’Have a meeting policy and scheduleThings that work well at small-scale tend to break at large-scaleYou need to instrument your system so you can see when things are reaching the breaking point well before they break. There is always one problematic component in a system that causes the majority of the scaling problems and must be rewrittenLoose coupling of components is critical. Blameless postmortems are the keyOverreacting to a crisis is likely to make it worse.Overbuilt systems are hard to implement, manage and scale.ONE BILLIONAnd this is where it gets interesting…..You need to keep tuning your business model, you need to keep your users ecstatically happy and you need to look out for disruptive innovation. But what is the key lesson?CultureCulture, culture, culture. Your advantage is not the hardware. It is your people. So how do you create culture at scale.?You start at the beginning (at start up). You lead by example. You recruit on cultural fit and passion. You recruit the best. You are transparent. You deliver the perks. You let them to get on with it.More metricsAnd the proof is in the metrics. The revenue per employee of Netflix is $ 2.2 mln, the profit per employee for Apple is $ 460,000. So they can afford to hire the best. And keep the best by allowing to play.PurposeTelling your staff that the company is a playground (a well kitted out one), for them to solve meaningful problems, that is the ultimate retention tool.Other billion dollar CEOsHe finished with advice from other billion companies:Delegate, Spread the load at high growthMake decisions fast. It is about momentumVision and mission statements are importantYou need entrepreneurs, producers, administrators and integrators on your management teamBe totally transparentStart reading to learnHire only people who you want in your top 10, even if it number 400 in your companyOpen communicationCreate serendipityIn summaryHis summary at the end, which is not far off from Peter Thiel:Build a truly great productHire the best and infect people with your vision and missionDevelop a solid business modelExcellence is a product of practiceSteve JobsThe last page is a quote from Steve Jobs.Do what you believe is great work. Love your work. Don’t settle.Other books we covered with BookbuzzEverything in this book confirms a lot of thinking that has been described in the many books we have covered in BookbuzzOverconnected (designed for delight)Digital disruption (platforms)Power brands (marketing)Metaskills (makers and design)How Google works (HR)The Alliance (HR)The Thank You Economy (Culture)Delivering happiness (Customer service)Talent masters (Talent)Reinventing organisations (organisation structure)Do it!
