Luu PRO: good selection of questions and answers, some of which I have not seen in other coding interview books I've read. So adding this book to your collection is a good idea for potential question/problem coverage.CON: Solutions don't come with explanations unlike other books, this book is more like a list of questions & their answers. However, a good online researcher can easily find more detail regarding the specific solution by searching based on the question details or the solution. But it would have been nice if this info was already in the book.

We met once a few years ago and we also attended a little gathering at a friend and colleague’s home. I have known of Karl Albrecht for many years, and I have always had the utmost professional respect for him and his work. Now, all that has changed. Now, I really like and admire him!!Brain Snacks is one of the funniest and most interesting books I’ve come across in years. I had barely started reading it when I began laughing so hard that my wife gave me a disapproving look. I kept reading. One of the many things I like about Brain Snacks is that there is no plot to figure out; no story line to follow; no lengthy passages. You can pick it up, read a little bit and put it down – or, you can keep reading. You can jump around as your mood dictates and you won’t lose track of a thing. Quite simply, it is a book chock full of “mental munchies.” There are some recurring categories: Nitwitticisms, Favorite Lame Jokes, Partly Baked Ideas (PBI) and Famous Bad Calls to name some. But, in the end, Brain Snacks is exactly what Karl says it is: “Fast Food for Your Mind.”At 235 pages, with the Credits and Introduction at the end instead of up front, you would have a hard time finding a better way of entertaining yourself on an as-you-feel-like-it basis and, maybe just maybe, also educating yourself a little bit in the process. At $15.95, it’s a darn good buy.

Karl Albrecht has a lot to ponder and write about on a wide range of topics: everything from self-help advice (which I appreciated personally) to what will happen when we colonize the moon (which was both thought provoking and alarming). The book is structured into bite size segments that allow you to keep reading, skip around, or put the book down to ponder what you have just read. Perhaps the funniest part is the fact that the forward is at the end of the book ... largely to prove how lame most author forwards are. If you like to think about philosophy, science, topical issues, and divert your attention to sheer amusing nonsense, get this one. It will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you think.

This is interesting since these kinds of books are seldom seen and made. This set contains 11 different stories which will inspire you in your everyday life. I like how the authors balanced the two main factor they want to show to their readers. Your mind will be tickled on the different twists and turns you will encounter while reading it which makes it more interesting. I will definitely keep this set and will read them again in the future.

All of us has our own religion, but the same faith in God. I believe in God the father and I always ask him for my guidance everyday and I know that in every trouble he is always beside me all the time. He never gives a challenging situation if we cannot solve it and learn from our mistakes. As I read all the short story of different authors I come up with the conclusion that if you have faith in God, there's no problem you can pass through the trials that you will encounter and if that's will happen you can find love and peace in life. The romance from this book is quite catching and you will find out that you are in to the story that you can relate and will enjoy reading till the end.

I especially liked the section entitled "Things to Practice and Things to Avoid" - some great practical ideas to start implementing immediately. This book really opened my eyes to chronic fatigue syndrome and also to what ails fybromyalgia sufferers too. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks they might be suffering from one of these disorders.

Very challenging read, but a highly rewarding one By Che Cunningham Material is an Ales Kot series, and if you're familiar with some of the other works in his repertoire (Change, Zero, The Surface, etc.) you'd probably guess that you're in for some really unorthodox storytelling here. And you would be right, but not necessarily in the way that you might imagine. Because unlike many of his other series, which are certainly weird, yet still focus on a central character, Material sees multiple plotlines developing at once, each having its own main character. One may be tempted to think that these plotlines in question don't have anything uniting them, and story-wise, this would be correct. But what really does unite them is the fact that they all revolve around people who are symbolic of underlying social problems that face America today. There's a struggling actress, an anti-technology university professor trying to come to grips with the paradox of the fact that he both criticizes technology while enjoying its luxuries, an innocent man who has just returned from Guantanamo, and a young black boy confronted with the harsh reality of racial inequality and police brutality in his community.All of these characters, while their separate plotlines never coalesce, are representative of many underlying problems and controversial topics that are hot talking points today in the U.S. And what Kot is essentially trying to do with each character is to give you a snapshot and insight into some of these topics through them, to give an idea of what it's like to live in America in 2015. To supplement this theme in a way, Kot includes little footnotes at the bottom of almost each page, references to artistic works, quotes from philosophers, names of unarmed black people killed by police, and other things that serve to reinforce the themes he's tackling here. Some may find this annoying, or (the magic word!) pretentious, but really it's a technique that only strengthens the writing by adding relevance to it. After all, when you're tackling real-world issues such as these, why not cite some real world material that readers can further investigate if they're curious about these topics?And this is largely the purpose of Material. It's not meant to "entertain," at least in the traditional sense of the term. This isn't a series like Saga, or Lazarus, or Sex Criminals where you're meant to get emotionally invested in the characters and share in their desires, motivations, sadness, accomplishments, and so on. Instead it's meant to make you think about some of the troubles we face as Americans today, and some of the root causes behind those troubles. Some might think that this isn't something that comics are "meant for," but hey guys: Kot is definitely being bold here by doing something that virtually NO ONE else in the industry can say they are at the moment, and for that, at the very least, I think he deserves respect.If the sound of profound sociopolitical commentary in comics tickles your fancy, give this series a shot. It is not an easy one to tackle, and it isn't "storytelling" in our traditional understanding of the word, but it is certainly one that rewards those who are looking for something insightful and out of the box.

Interesting idea, but I got lost in the way it was presented By Wayne A McCoy 'Material, Vol. 1' by Ales Kot is a comic that attempts to address some of the current wrongs in the world in a comic book form, which is admirable. I just found it a bit incoherent and preachy.Four separate stories work their way through the book. A man comes home from Guantanamo Bay after surviving torture. He is trying to readjust to life with his wife. An actress takes a role in a movie, after barely working at all the previous year. A young black man is in a riot and ends up getting booked into a detention center. An older intellectual is facing aging and meets an interesting artificial intelligence. None of the stories, as far as I can tell, intertwined as of yet, but maybe that's for future issues.There are footnotes on most pages, or the names of black victims of police violence, or songs or books to read. Overall, I get the message, but I think it could have been told differently or better. I felt talked down to. I do believe comics can be a medium for change, and I was interested in this one, but I felt a bit let down.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Bold and worthy By Ted Logan Other reviews have gone into depth regarding the non-traditional structure of this piece, but I'm writing on a phone, so I'll be briefer. This isn't your average comic; Image labeled it as literary fiction, which seems accurate. Like many literary works, it is not contained within itself but depends on intertextuality. It pushes the reader in many ways, but the reward is significant in both intellectual and emotional pleasure. It will likely be studied in academic environments if Kot keeps this up.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Code implemented is poor. Explanation of algorithms is good. By RHV I have no idea why the author didn't implement pandas or numpy instead of devoting pages to reading csv files with base python. He chose to store data in lists of lists. Why??? He chose to normalize and store data "the ol' fashioned way" instead of using numpy arrays. This makes the code less readable. (Seriously, every example begins with several lines of code simply to read the data, loop through each line, split on a ",", append to a list, etc. Using pandas' read_csv or numpy's genfromtxt code have accomplished the same thing in one line!)The author does say, however, that he included a lot of code to help explain how the algorithms work. This is actually helpful--when it relates specifically to a machine learning algorithm. He subsequently makes use of scikit-learn objects in the examples, as he should.Why he didn't follow the same approach when reading CSV files, I have no idea.My recommendation is as follows. If you're looking for code to implement, I would not use this book for proper examples. If you're looking for an explanation of penalized regression and ensemble algorithms, this book is pretty good for that purpose in my opinion.

By Ddub I'm somewhat new to the field, working on a new venture involving predictive analytics. Of the resources I'm using, I keep coming back to this book - the background, problem setup, explanation of tradeoffs, and code examples have been really good. I'm no Python developer, but I was able to narrow down to an algorithm and get it running with Anaconda and Scikit-Learn without much trouble. Compared to a lot of other resources I've seen, this is a great book for a complete view of the recent algorithms along with a how-to on getting started.

In his career, he has worked in different domains spanning supply chain management, finance, and travel. A good overview of PostgreSQL, especially for those who are familiar with databases By Geordee Naliyath This book gives a good overview of PostgreSQL database. It is an easy read, especially so if you have some background in any other databases. The book is logically organized from the installation steps to advanced topics. Even the process of installation is explained pretty nicely, explaining the internals of the database systems - which is pretty rare in similar books.In the past I have built quite a number of products with PostgreSQL as the backend. I could work with PostgreSQL easily with the general overview and DBMS concepts from other databases. The chapters on server architecture and object hierarchies really helped me to understand PostgreSQL in depth, especially in relation to other databases. As I mentioned earlier, and as the title implies, if you have been a database programmer, administrator or an architect, the details are presented concisely, in a logical order. I should also mention the handy queries and commands in every section, that prompts me to leave the eBook on the desktop.Next two chapters focus on the transactions, data modeling, and client tools which are more beginner-friendly. However, it helps to understand how PostgreSQL implements or supports those features. The book then takes a steep climb to more serious topics such as tuning, administration and scaling.SQL Tuning is quite enjoyable, starting with a few thought-provoking facts and strategies. Each of the tuning tips is well-demonstrated. A better (and consistent) layout would have made it a little more easier to read. The chapter on server tuning is also quite easy to read, especially if you have some similar background from any of the databases.Scaling, Replication, and Backup and Recovery is one of the longest, and toughest chapters. Overlapping concepts from all four topics are distilled here, and it would take some effort from the reader to keep everything in mind, together. A lot of details present here would require additional reading to get a fair understanding and grip on the subject. The book serves the purpose of keeping the concepts together as an overview.PostgreSQL is one database that competes well against the NoSQL data stores. The last chapter gives a glimpse of PostgreSQL’s not-so-conventional capabilities. The books covers PostgreSQL 9.3. Hope that it would be revised with 9.4 or even 9.5 in future, with more details on the newer features available to data architects.Overall a good read, and a book worth keeping.

Interesting By Autamme_dot_com It can be a miracle that anything gets done at a company, with most companies being seemingly dysfunctional workplaces where their employees are rarely engaged with each other. Just imagine what could be achieved with a little bit of cohesion amongst workers and their employers.This book seeks to look at current working practices within typical companies, assessing what is seemingly not working and hopefully finding solutions for possible change along the way. Billed as being not a dry presentation of organizational psychology theories, this book has an element of potential but it just didn’t thoroughly and totally engage this reviewer. The subject is interesting, the recipient of the knowledge is receptive but at times felt underwhelmed by the book.All the key elements are there: workplace integrity, recognition, commitment, communications, leadership, empowerment, autonomy, engagement and wellbeing but the spark was just missing. It wasn’t a dry book but neither did it grab you, inspire you and lead you. When there are other more inspirational, accessible, actionable books out there, acting as a credible springboard to workplace investigation and change, overlooking this might be a little too easy, despite it undoubtedly having a lot of interesting, credible, thought provoking opinions.There’s not much more to say. It’s not a bad book but it feels as if would struggle to be anything other than an “average foot soldier”. Fortunately it isn’t expensive, so you could take it as one of many possible sources, yet you might be advised not to make it your first book on the subject.
