Tiwana I has high hopes for this book, based on the excellent earlier titles in this "Essential knowledge" series by MIT Press. The other books are snappy, thought-provoking, sharply written, and have no fluff. Just solid substance jam-packed into 100-ish pages. This series reminds me of the high "insight per page density" of O'Reilly Nutshell series (the one with the critter covers).This title does not fit that mold. I agree with the other reviewers in their disappointment. The book is completely unstructured and reads like a 200 page long stream-of-consciousness essay, with little new insight. It seemed like it was written in a hurry and read like an initial draft. It is also backward-looking rather than forward-looking; focusing mostly on trends that have already happened. I was expecting to see some frameworks to make sense of iOT, some insight into fundamental tensions and tradeoffs to get a bigger picture looking at the future. This title was a disappointment. I recommend saving your money and instead starting with the Wikipedia entry on iOT.

Bardwell Don't waste your time unless you have never heard of the "Internet of Things" (in which case, how did you know about this book?)Normally MIT press produces quality reads, but this is an exception.It is a very short book, and still manages to be annoyingly repetitive. It is frustrating to read, because you expect it to get around to providing a coherent framework of the technology, the challenges, and the risks. Instead it just keeps repeating the same vague lists of some of the technologies and things IoT might do. The discussion of the risks and challenges is uselessly brief and general. I just kept reading, hoping it would come together. It does not. If you are a total newbie to the IoT subject, then spending an hour with Google will be more useful than this book. If you know a little about IoT, this book will not raise that knowledge level much.To top it off, there are spelling errors and grammar errors that should have been caught by the most basic spell checker. Not what you expect from a prestigious publisher.

I'm about the same age as the author so the references to growing up in the 80s-90s make complete sense to me, but it's more than the nods to grunge music and doc martins that makes Allison so relatable. Her engaging prose, at once poetic and journalistic, paints pictures in photographs.I'm looking forward to reading fiction from Gruber.

I especially loved "President of the Drama Club" in which we see the young Allison realize her destiny as a writer who can make a difference with words. I highly recommend this engrossing memoir.

A Great Read By Michael Aiken The Evangelical church needs more books like Each Part Working Properly because it focuses on the Lord's church which has fallen on hard times in our current American culture. While this book is used as a manual for joining a particular church (Community Evangelical Free Church of Harrisburg), it may be read with profit by anyone desiring to learn why it is vital to join a good church. The three chapters cover a lot of ground in simple terms but with depth. It is not a boring read because Benjamin brings in many life stories to enrich and elucidate his theological points.Chapter one, "First Things First" covers important topics like what is the gospel and is church membership even biblical. In explaining the gospel, Benjamin focuses on two major points about the gospel: (1) "the good news of the victory of Jesus" and (2) "the good news of justification by faith alone." Under the victory of Jesus, Genesis 3:15 is shown to be the first mention of the gospel of Jesus' victory over the enemy of the serpent, Satan. He briefly shows how the entire Bible (Old and New testaments) is a story of redemption pointing to Jesus as the victor over mankind's greatest enemies, sin and Satan. Scriptures are given as proof to this doctrine and helpfully explained. It was helpful to see this good news story from Genesis to Revelation as a snow ball which starts small but then grows larger to the end. The second point under the gospel, justification by faith, is clearly and accurately defined. 2 Corinthians 5:21 is expounded and shown to teach that every believer when justified by faith in Christ is given the perfect righteousness of Christ. The last topic of whether church membership is biblical or not is quite helpful in a culture which abhorscommitments. While Benjamin admits church membership is not an explicit command it is nevertheless an implication of Scripture which is seen in the fact that the Apostles knew who belonged to the churches they were writing and ministering to. One instance Benjamin cites is in Acts 2:41,47 etc. where the phrase "and many were added to their number" is a reference to the apostles knowing who belonged to the church as it grew. Benjamin is charitable with those who struggle with church membership and he gives a clear biblical case for why to join a church (pp. 14-21). One unique concept he mentions is what he calls "common law church membership" as being analogous to "common law marriage" in our civil society. He recognizes there are some who are committed to a local church but just won't joint.The second chapter, "From Post-It Notes to Statements of Faith" gets you thinking about what is fundamental to Christianity. Benjamin lists 7 main areas where biblical Christianity is unique: (1) God, (2) Bible, (3) Man, (4) Salvation, (5) Christian Living, (6) The Church, and (7) Eternity. The 10 point doctrinal statement of the Evangelical Free Church of America is quoted, which is a good general summary which all Evangelical Christians would agree except for point #9 under Christ's Return where the statement confesses a "premillennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ." The last two sections under this chapter deal with what the EFCA means by "the significance of silence" and where the Pastor Elders of Community Free Church do take a stand on these issues of silence such as the reformed faith and complimentarianism. There are 5 areas covered (called DNA) and Benjamin gives concise explanations for each of these.The third chapter, "The Importance of Being Connected," emphasizes how each believer is a member of God's family, and if they are not joined to a local church then they are missing just like a child would go missing and there would be an Amber Alert! That was a powerful illustration. The last part of the chapter gives good tips on how to share your testimony in a way that includes the particulars of a believer's life story and most importantly includes the gospel message. Benjamin is passionate that the gospel is not excluded in the giving of our personal stories of coming to Christ.The epilogue is a nice bonus which deals with how to practically leave a church. I have never been in a church where the membership class taught you how to leave a church well. This again is much needed in our American culture of consumerism, low commitment, and church hopping. I highly recommend the reading of this book.

Adams As someone who read this book and was not raised Protestant, I found this book to be an exceptional primer. It's bible-centric through and through, but it's not drab or wooden; Benjamin's writing style is contemporary, conversational, sensible, and refreshing.It starts with an Introduction, then dives straight into "What is the Gospel?" where it defines the good news and breaks down its meaning into its constituent parts, and it does so in a way that I feel any Christian or non-Christian could understand. There are Bible citations throughout, but they're used appropriately rather than exhaustively.As its description states, much of the book covers church membership and participation, but it also discusses topics such as baptism, reformed theology, the church as a family, and complementarianism. Each Part Working Properly also contains several other enriching topics that any person of any faith can appreciate and learn from.For new members and for those who are just curious, this book provides a view into Christian churches in general, and what it means to be a member the Community Evangelical Free Church. It leaves no stone unturned and addresses numerous questions that both aspiring members and the idly curious might have, making it a fantastic resource for Evangelicals and non-Evangelicals alike.

Starting with the Gospel and working through its implications in who we are as Christians individually and corporately, this book provides an extremely helpful resource for church leaders shaping a new membership process and for new members understanding the church. It contains a great answer to the question of the if church membership is biblical and delves graciously into areas of possibly theological differences. One of the greatest features is the presentation of a very approachable method of developing one’s personal testimony in a Gospel centered way that will help comfort the most introverted of believers.I would recommend this book as a helpful tool for Elders and church leaders exploring the shaping or reshaping of their new membership process and even those looking to reshape church structure (there is an appendix which includes a fine example of a constitution and by-laws).The goal of this book was to help potential new members at this specific church, but with some generalizing it is a phenomenal tool all churches will benefit from.

By Auhmanduh I originally picked this up because I loved how Raven St. Pierre wrote the concept and wanted to read it from another person's mind set.My first thought was that Ethan was a poor spineless smuck who fit the "all brawn, no brains" stereotype. But then you just realize that people really can be blind to the people they love.That being said, Ethan had no character development. Haley was mildly developed and outside of the melodramatic bullsh!t that the producers were forcing on the two the book really had nothing. The big confrontation with Murphy felt forced, as did the ending.What I did like was how Ethan and Haley developed their love. I liked how Ethan realized what real love is and how selfless he was for the right female. I liked that they both figured out they were being played and saved their marriage.Over all is was an ok read. (JMO)

In Japan, for example, it is mandatory for the people to sleep with a whistle blower within arm’s length to use to notify rescue personnel in case of an earthquake. For the same reason there is a class in school teaching the children what to do. The Ultimate 72 Hour Disaster Survival Kit It all begins with the choice of container which greatly depends upon your load carrying capabilities, as it would rather be impossible to use a vehicle to evacuate in an emergency. By Huggy Every writer has their own ideas of what constitutes the "best" or most "crucial" items everybody should have as part of their BOB, GOOD or GHB gear.Personally, I read most every book of this genre I can find since each author has their own idea of what constitutes "crucial" and this book is no different.That said, I recommend everyone do the same thing, digest what each author writes AND their rationale for their ideas, then pick and.choose what YOU think would work BEST for YOUR anticipated needs. Along the same lines, read what each author suggests as each piece of equipment can do since they may suggest ideas for the use of a particular item you may not have considered it could be used for.It is, in MY opinion, far better to carry gear that can function in several, multipurpose, uses than one item for ONLY one function. You'll cut down on bulk and weight.Just purchase QUALITY gear and not cheapie junk that may (will?) fail you when you most need it and your life may hang in the balance.

Who knows when the next disaster will strike and like most of us, we are rarely prepared. Nature can strike at any given moment and I think it's great that books like these are written and published. A must read no matter where you live.

Edgar Mihelic, MBA Picked this up off the shelf, sight unseen.It was a smart pick.The story is about a young woman, growing up.The background is the hunt for the so-called “Yorkshire” Ripper, a serial killer who was tracking down women and killing them.The killer took too long to get caught because the people looking for him were incompetent. They were incompetent in that they were men who made unfair assumptions about women.All the men do. Though there is the backdrop of the useless police, the story can be seen as a universal story of women growing up - where the threat of sexual violence is complete both in society as a whole and even within relationships. It was a powerfully told tale, and one that makes me worry for my daughters in the future and all the daughters ever.

The artist was 12 when the serial killer known as the Yorkshire Ripper was murdering women in her area. She talks about how this was going on when she was raped by a couple of older guys at that time and how the two threads overlapped. The story ties together what we now call slut-shaming, the casual sexism of the investigators, and how this lead to massive incompetence in the investigation, and how it all affected her life. Well worth a look.

About the Author

H. G. M. Williamson is Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University, on the faculty of The Oriental Institute and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of several books and numerous articles on the Old Testament, including commentaries on 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, as well as The Book Called Isaiah and Studies in Persian Period History and Historiography.

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984). 

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

 

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Williamson's commentary on Ezra and Nehemiah is one of the best I have come across on these books. Even if you never use it as a commentary on the text itself, the introductory material is worth the cost of the book. He discusses the sources of these books, date of writing, chronological order of Ezra and Nehemiah, as well as other issues and does so in a thorough and persuasive fashion, while at the same time being fair in his assessment of the positions with which he disagrees.The commentary on the text itself, while it contains technical material primarily of interest to scholars, is clearly written and has plenty of information of interest to the layperson. Williamson is knowledgeable about the history and customs of the era, which he uses to explain references in the text that would otherwise be opaque. If you can afford just one commentary on Ezra and Nehemiah, this is the one to buy.

Yoga and Sam will always be an interesting combo. Max is increasingly getting more confusing. I still think he is in love with Sam even if it's down deep.
