I immediately liked Kara King, she's super intense and is indeed a bit reckless but you can't help sympathizing with her. And Mr. Daifu... sorry, DOCTOR Daifu is awfully intriguing (although I don't know that I'd want to have a beer with him). The art is wonderful, the way faces are drawn is unique, and I really like the shading and coloration throughout. I'm not sure how best to describe the style, it's slightly cartoonish but has a lot of depth and detail. I don't want to give anything away, but Prometheus's disappearance isn't the only mystery at hand... This was really fun to read and I look forward to future issues.

PDF Ebook Software Defined Networking (SDN): Anatomy of OpenFlow Volume I (Volume 1), by Doug Marschke

Software Defined Networking is revolutionizing the networking world. While the industry transitions to a software-centric architecture, a clear definition of Sdn remains murky at best. This book clarifies the current industry confusion about what Sdn is, why it's important, and most importantly the protocols and use cases that define Sdn. OpenFlow (Of) is a critical piece of the Sdn puzzle. While Sdn solutions exist that do not require Of, it is undeniable that Of helped spur the innovation in Sdn. The history of Of, its current and future status, and the associated use cases will be explained in detail in this book. Lastly, the book attempts to lay out Sdn deployments that are real and current today, and apply practicality to the vast world of Sdn architectures.

The fog has cleared in my head on the relationship between cloud, virtualization, SDN, OpenFlow and OpenStack. A lot of the buzz words out in the industry are clearly explained through example in this book. An excellent introductory into the fundamentals of SDN. I am eagerly waiting for volume 2! I will be the first person to purchase the volume 2 :) . Thumbs up!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. All Network Engineers Aboard! By Kenyone L. Johnson This book starts off with a very brief, but concise depiction of why we have a data plane, and control plane. And even more so, it explains the reason how all these different convergence addons (LISP, BFD, etc) evolved. Then it gets to why SDN would alleviate all of that, plus vendor-specific knowledge about implementation of networking protocols, etc. I am just in the middle of the 3rd chapter, and I must say, I couldn't have become interested in SDN at a better time (except for day one, wink). But now that it has evolved, and is on the forefront, I see this as another "disruption" in the field of networking. So as a network engineer, i'm climbing aboard now!

Sterne's utterly original novel—the meandering, maddening "autobiography" of one of literature's oldest comic characters, with an introduction by Tom McCarthy Doomed to become the "sport of fortune" by an interruption at the crucial moment of conception, Tristram Shandy’s life lurches from one mishap to another: his nose crushed by the doctor's forceps during birth, christened with the wrong name, an unfortunate incident involving a slamming sash window. Groundbreaking, subversive, and still controversial, this novel has inspired, enraged, and perplexed writers and readers for centuries. Discover the antiautobiography of the hilarious and impossibly long-winded Tristram Shandy.

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (Vintage Classics), by Laurence Sterne

From Library Journal Rowson, an illustrator whose version of T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland met with critical praise, turns his considerable skills to Laurence Sterne's 18th-century classic. This appears a sure bet: a new reading of a well-known book. Yet, the novel doesn't make the transition into the graphic format smoothly. Rowson's admiration for Tristram Shandy hinders this graphic version, causing him to rely on the text rather than the illustrations to pace the story. Moreover, this book becomes not only another version of Tristram Shandy but a commentary on reading it as several celebrities wend their way through the plot, which includes a hypothetical game of strip poker between Sterne, Swift, and Rabelais and the filming of the novel by movie producer Oliver Stone. Too complex for those unfamiliar with the original, this is nonetheless recommended for libraries with large graphic novel and literature collections.?Stephen Weiner, Maynard P.L., Mass.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Rowson's graphic novel of Laurence Sterne's famous ``cock and bull'' story (often called the first modern novel) will disappoint readers looking for a ``Classic Comics'' crib version. Which is, of course, the very strength of this wickedly inventive re-creation of Sterne's notoriously self-reflexive book. Employing a visual style that blends Hogarth with Gilbert Shelton (of Furry Freak Bros. fame), Rowson himself shows up on the page for some meta-level commentary of his own, and reimagines scenes from Sterne in the styles of Drer, Beardsley, Grosz, and George Harriman, not to mention one from Oliver Stone's movie version. Rowson also rewrites key passages in the manner of Martin Amis, Raymond Chandler, and Garc¡a M rquez (among others). Tackling such an inherently unadaptable novel, Rowson nevertheless selects many of the most memorable sections for extended visualizations: Tristram's birth and naming, Uncle Toby's famous wound and hobbyhorse, and the history of family noses. All provide occasion for Sterne's bawdy, which Rowson makes somewhat more explicit. As critical commentary and scholarly play, this rude and splendid comic book will delight true Shandeans. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Composed long before there were rules about what a novel is supposed to look like, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy" is a visionary piece of literature, a book so original in construction it almost defies genre. Conceived by an Anglican vicar who, under the comic influence of Rabelais and Swift and equally informed by Cervantes and Shakespeare, turned to writing fiction later in his life, it is an inadvertent masterpiece, the product of a writer who just wanted to have fun and entertain his readers and ultimately entertained generations. The book is not a fictitious autobiography, although its narrator Tristram Shandy might have intended it to be; most of the story is concerned not with his life but with his idiosyncratic family and the circumstances surrounding his conception and birth, with many digressions on various related and unrelated subjects. His father Walter, whose conjugal duties coincide with his having to wind the clock the first Sunday of every month, compiles a compendium of information he calls the Tristrapoedia for the education of his newborn son. His uncle Toby, an expert in military architecture, rides a hobby-horse and occupies his time with the science of besieging fortresses. Other characters include Corporal Trim, a former soldier and now Toby's valet and factotum; Dr. Slop, a dwarfish physician who delivers the baby Tristram; and Yorick the parson, who naturally is descended from the infamous jester of the Danish royal court. There are two aspects to this book that distinguish Sterne's style. The first is that he provides several different channels of narration and never really settles on a main plot thread; he interrupts the flow of one narrative with another, delivering narrative flights of fancy like a marriage contract, a sermon, a notice of excommunication from the Catholic Church, a travelogue for France and Italy, and amusing anecdotes about extracurricular characters. In this way he presages the modernism of many twentieth century authors. The second is that he does not restrict his text to English words; he intersperses Greek, Latin, and French passages where he likes, and on occasion he does not even use words at all, but symbols and glyphs to express certain concepts. A cross appears in the print when a character crosses himself; a character's death is memorialized by a black page; a blank page is provided for the reader to draw (mentally or physically) his own vision of the voluptuous Widow Wadman, who has a romantic eye for Toby; long rows of asterisks and dashes are used for things that are better left unsaid. At one point Sterne even draws squiggly lines to illustrate the sinuosity of his narrative, celebrating his own whimsy."Tristram Shandy" was published in nine volumes over the last nine years of Sterne's life, and whether these were all he had intended is debatable because the narrative is implied to have neither a beginning nor an end; it seems very much like a work in progress. As such, by modern literary standards it may not be considered a novel, but in the sense of its unconventionality, its supply of so many bemusing surprises for the reader to discover, it is as literal an example of the term "novel" as there is.

78 of 80 people found the following review helpful. An 18th century modern novel By Michael Fridman This work is OLD but reads like the most innovative avant-garde novel of today. The book is about Tristram Shandy and his birth, his uncle and his war wound and his father with his love of names and noses. Seriously! This is the original story-with-no-story and the beauty of the book is in the way that it's written. In reality, Sterne talks about anything and everything. He makes digressions lasting 20 odd pages, rambles to the reader, apologises for rambling, then discusses how he plans to get the story finally under way.The book is out of order chronologically. One of the funniest things about the book is that it's meant to be an autobiography of the fictional Tristram. Half the book is spent telling the story of the day of his birth. Then, the author moves to another scene, mainly revolving around Tristram's uncle Toby and the novel finishes several years before Tristram's birth.Sterne's writing is chaotic resembling a stream of consciousness. Sentences run onto the other, there's heaps of dashes and asterisks being used for various purposes. Sterne adds scribbles to signify the mood of the character. When one character dies, to symbolise his end, Sterne has a black page to describe it. When introducing a beautiful female character, Sterne says he can't be bothered describing her so he leaves a blank page for the reader to draw his/her own rendition. The book - though technically not a satire - in the process of going nowhere and saying nothing makes fun of many religious, political and societal topics. Sterne was a minister but from the book it can be gleaned that he was a particularly irreverent one.The work is divided into 9 books, published serially. This is a work where you can just pick up a chapter and read it. Some are several pages. Others are two lines. It takes a while to get used to Sterne's writing "style" so read slowly. This goes for the whole novel as there's so much hidden underneath the surface. This edition is great in having footnotes on the same page and reviews of Tristram as well as critical essays and Sterne's own letters about the work - many of which are very good.Tristram is funny, ridiculous, clever and very very eccentric. An absolute MUST!

I've just read the customer reviews of this wonderful book and seen how being forced to read something you wouldn't normally read makes you bitter, twisted and intent on ensuring no-one else gets pleasure out of it. It also makes you cemented in your opinion that if you don't like it, it must have no redeeming feature (after, all "I did a degree in Eng Lit, so I must know what I'm talking about"). All great difficult books suffer from this -- Ulysses, At Swim-Two-Birds, Lanark, The Trial, and that's just the 20th century. Oh well. People should read what they want, when they want: they should also accept that there is little out there with no value, it's taste that causes us to like different things. That said, what do I think of it? I think it's one of the most fun reads there is, once you get yourself back into an 18thC mode of reading (MTV has so much to answer for with our attention spans). Also, forget all this bunk about it being postmodern or deliberately experimenting with the novel. When this was written, there WAS no novel, that came in the 19thC. Before this there was Don Quixote, Robinson Crusoe and little else that could be called a novel. All Sterne was doing was writing to entertain, and that he does marvelously. He had no boundaries to push - they weren't there - so he made his own (and they just happened to be a long way away from where he originally sat).Anyway -- if you like the idea of a book that coined the phrase "cock and bull story", includes blank pages to show discretion when two characters make love, that draws wiggling lines indicating the authors impression of the amount of digression in the previous pages, you'll love it. But just stop if you don't like it, instead of perseveering and then taking it out on everyone.

Spokane, Washington, is nearly perfect for most people, but Jack Fitzpatrick is not one of them. Hours after graduation and armed with his final paycheck from his nemesis, Jack heads for Southern California determined to prove that money does by happiness. Thanks to a lucky run-in with a talent agent a few weeks earlier, Jack has loftier (and more lucrative)dreams than minimum wage in the basement of Nordstrom's. But once there, he learns that lofty dreams are a dime a dozen in the City of Angels. Broke, barely scraping by, and hating his life as a temp, L.A. is definitely not what Jack expected. Dreams are a dime a dozen in the City of Angels. Broke, barely scraping by, and hating his life as a temp, L.A. is definitely not what Jack expected. But that doesn't mean he is going to lay down and give up--not yet. After reading “Best Paying Jobs of 1987” in Newsweek magazine, he decides to go after the only one he thinks he has a shot at: institutional bond broker. Once frustrated that his dazzling lack of experience keeps getting in the way, Jack is ecstatic to land a job at Freedom Capital, a no-name firm with a hire anybody mentality. Pumped to be on his way to his first few million, Jack eagerly engages in the challenged ethics of his new employer. When a series of innocent events lands him in prison, he’s sure things can’t get any worse. He would be wrong. Funny, scathing and over-the-top, Freaks I've Met is an adventure so unlike any other, it must be totally true.

Freaks I've Met, by Donald Jans

Amazon.com Review FREAKS I'VE MET will appeal to younger readers, who may be like Jack, just setting out on their life's journey. Pointing the way through the barbs and snares of an overly materialistic world. --Foreword Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews A Spokane college graduate searches for wealth and fame in LA but finds only a string of dead-end jobs and outlandish individuals in Jans’ witty debut drama. In 1987, Jack Fitzpatrick’s plans to be rich and famous are off to a good start. Beverly Hills talent agent Alain Michaels tells Jack that he can find him work as a model in California. But when the modeling gig doesn’t pan out, Jack’s more determined than ever to make it on his own instead of returning to Spokane. He stays with a friend and runs through a few temp jobs, finally finding success as a bond broker. Jack makes good money at bond firm Freedom Capital Markets, but he soon realizes that he wants to share it with someone. The author’s Bukowski-esque tale has an ordinary protagonist immersed in extraordinary circumstances. Jack’s escape from his Spokane roots, for instance, is sublimely epitomized by Mrs. Pohlkiss, an affluent neighbor who looks down on him and who’s immediately on his mind at the slightest sign of failure. Likewise, Jack, while certainly not naïve, is faced with obstacles he’s never considered—complacency or boredom with a job and a revolving door of co-workers, some of them friends who leave too soon and a shady few who are considerably less friendly. Jack’s nonchalant narration manages to take the bite out of the story’s darker bits, like the protagonist’s eventual arrest and incarceration, as well as the toilet humor. Other characters, too, have their comic moments: Noah’s wife, a millionaire by inheritance, still demands that her husband get a job. Jans wisely saves details about Jack’s dog until later in the story. Jack’s goal continually changes throughout the novel—he wants fame, success, and maybe even a wife—but what he truly craves is finally answered in a satisfying coda that’s both over-the-top and a little endearing. An engrossing but tongue-in-cheek drama that, even at its most dramatic, will leave readers smiling

Review Foreword Reviews- Freaks I’ve Met is an entertaining, raucous novel with a bit of a lesson at its heart. In Freaks I’ve Met, Donald Jans delivers a riotous bromance centering a recent college graduate with a heart for, and potentially even of, gold. Irreverent prose and wild situations make for entertaining reading in a novel that, despite the unapologetic vices of its narrator, works its way toward a revelation. All twentysomething Jack wants is out of Spokane, but he’ll take a fortune and riches with his escape if they’re available. Chasing promises from a sleazy modeling agent, he winds up in Los Angeles, where dazzling promises dissipate with disappointing speed. But Jack is determined to grab onto some late-eighties wealth, and so charms his way into work as a stockbroker, where morals are always secondary to the sale. This is a tale replete with sex, substance abuse, dishonesty and people-using, but somehow the narrator, Jack, maintains charm throughout. Jack’s likability is all the more surprising when one considers the situations he gets himself into—landing friends in trouble with their indulgent mothers, unthinkingly rattling off racial stereotypes while dating girls meant to expand his romantic horizons, and flirting with illegality on the trading floor. But even at his most shameless and vulgar, there’s an “aww shucks” quality to Jack’s speech that’s appealing. Jack cultivates naïveté, seemingly determined to grab ahold of whatever glitters, consequences be damned: “I needed a job like … the stockbroker. He was a pretty cool guy with a huge house and a pool, and he sure seemed to be home an awful lot to enjoy it. I guess that was mostly during his FBI investigation, but still, his job seemed perfect.” Jack’s crash landing can be sensed coming long before the scene for it is set; but it seems Jack knows it’s coming, too, and is resigned to enjoying the ride for as long as it lasts. The comedic flavor of Freaks I’ve Met is certain to appeal to those who remember the fecklessness of youth with any degree of longing, just as Jack’s comeuppance is likely to serve as a reminder of why such free-wheeling is not always well advised. There’s a degree of warning in this endlessly fun novel that removes it from the realm of strictly guilty pleasures. There’s so much fun to be had here that readers are unlikely to begrudge Jans a bit of final cheesiness. Freaks I’ve Met is an entertaining, raucous novel with a bit of a lesson at its heart.

By paul swift Our author shows us through a world of the macabre (mainly L.A.) as the main character, Jack, struggles to hang on while the very plan he set in motion tests his grit. Full of wonderful, situationally hilarious and always fully x-rated confessions of young man set out to ensure the proper lighting for his bright future. I couldn't put it down once I opened it. Reminded me of the dark humor I always enjoyed in Palahniuk, with much more chuckling and far less retching. Honest and true in his message, the Mr. Jans passes along great advice while keeping his reader more than entertained.

It was hilarious and insightful, and the author no doubt drew from his own experience in the bond market. The book could have a subtitle "Expose of the Bond Market." (And all the stock brokers and financial finaglers on Wall Street are crooks without a conscience as well.)Great metaphors had me laughing out loud. And it's quite an education for those who are unfamiliar with how the bond/stock market really works. Do read this book!Last but not least, there were NO grammatical errors. Big congratulations to the author! (Well, there was one but it was in a quotation, and it's the way most people "talk.")

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It's a must read! By Juan Costantini The fresh point of view of the character regarding subjects that we now consider cliché makes for an incredible fun and fast paced reading. The author has managed to capture a life experience and turn it into a palatable story full of witty metaphors and quick turns. This books, albeit being a first, has all to offer and makes us want for more to come.

By EatReal I've always had a problem with my nose feeling stuffy, which I was told by my ENT was due to enlarged adenoids. This made breathing through my nose difficult, and I would always feel self conscious because my breathing was noisy and probably annoyed everyone around me. Sometimes I would just breath through my mouth because my nose became too blocked. This book has literally taught me how to UNBLOCK MY STUFFY NOSE AT WILL! The feeling of newfound control over my body that I have after reading "Adenoids Without Surgery" is truly indescribable. It's like a huge weight has been lifted from me.I have struggled with enlarged adenoids, chronic mouth breathing and sinusitis for a long time. This book has been incredibly informative as to the root cause of my condition, and how to go about reversing it. The games and exercises included in this book are intended for children. However as an adult in my 20's I found them to be both fun and effective. The book is written in a clear and concise style that is both engaging and informative. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH to anyone with enlarged adenoids or other breathing issues.

Goodwin This is a terrific book for those with children who have problems with adenoids. The foreward is technical reading, but you would expect that from a doctor, and the information he presents helps one to understand that this is scientific. The rest of the book is presented in an easy to understand manner, having illustrations to drive home the points. They make it easy enough that a child could understand. The Breathing Normalization method described in this book has been the subject of medical studies, and has been found to be effective. Again, this is a terrific book for those with children who have problems with adenoids.

The word Sh'ma translates from the original Hebrew to mean “to hear and obey" In Jesus' day, and in the continued tradition of the Jewish people of God, the daily prayer called the Sh'ma was spoken. Included in this daily petition was the word meaning "hear oh Israel." Listening to God was always inextricably woven into obedience. To hear is to obey. It is our daily prayer to hear God and respond in obedience to Him. "The Whisperer" encourages believers to hear and obey God in our acts of Faith. It is important to distinguish whose voice we hear in our hearts and take a look at keeping our lives simple and quiet enough that we can listen. There may be voices from our past; voices that compete with God’s that try to persuade us to follow another way. There may be worldly influences that keep our hearts preoccupied and far away from what is important to God. There may have been times when we did hear from God and yet did not respond in obedience. Is there a hush that we can create in our lives that helps open our ears to the voice of our Shepherd? Are we still enough; grounded enough; and healed in our inner lives enough to discern the voice we truly obey?

Not sure because all the characters are pretty loathsome beings you'd steer clear of if you knew what was good for you, but that was possibly why I liked it so much. I've been told you have to make your characters likeable so they can get you on their side but such is the in depth characterisations of the personalities in this book you are driven to read on. I am always delighted to read this author, he is a shining nugget amongst a pile of indigestible writers out there today and am already looking forward to next novel. He were an unsigned footballer Chelsea would have snapped him up a long time ago.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love Mr. Hodge. :-) By Trish (I read too much!) Ron is still out there, causing mayhem, lurking and watching, stealing orange juice. Oscar knows it. Has always known it, even before the Red Fist tightened its grip on his small town. Even before all the madness that ensued after that fateful day when the mysterious man behind the cooler stole that bottle of Sunshine Juice right out from Oscar’s grasp. The day everything changed. The Quest for Nothing in Particular is the third and final volume of the Paranoia trilogy, and it’s just as eccentric, quirky and humorous as the first two.The characters are memorable and unique, faulty and broken to an almost superhuman degree. In particular, I love how we really get into Oscar’s head. He’s exceedingly paranoid and knows it, but not everything is in his head. Even as Oscar struggles to separate reality from paranoid delusion, very real things continue to happen around him. Some so odd they are humorous, some quite disturbing. The mix is something I’ve enjoyed from the first book and has remained true through the end of this one.The animal characters get their own spotlight in this one, and it’s quite fun. No, they aren’t talking animals, but they are just as charismatic and flawed as their human masters/friends are. Mr. Hodge will always be my favorite, but William the rat also steals the show in a surprising way.And of course the mysterious villain, Ron, is he real? And, if so, what’s his beef with Oscar? These are questions this book finally answers and in a satisfyingly epic conclusion to one of the oddest quests I’ve ever read about.Besides the characters, one more feature of this book must be mentioned: the footnotes. Yes, there are footnotes. But they aren’t the kind you write for college papers or the kind you see in non-fiction. They are a delightful distraction, tossed in wherever they happened to land in the story. A slow part, an epic battle, a romantic scene, no matter, there’s likely a footnote to lure you away to some odd, factual or even nonsensical tidbit. I make it a point to read them exactly when I come across them for best effect.Overall, I loved this book as much as I did the first two. I’d definitely recommend it to people who like a humorous, quirky story with a bit of danger and a lot of fun. There’s some adult content, and while it pokes fun at some serious things, the underlying theme is one of accepting people, even when they are flawed.I received the review copy of this book from the author in return for an honest, non-reciprocal review.

Since the sixteenth century, the Protestant tradition has been divided. The Reformed and Lutheran reformations, though both committed to the doctrine of the sinners justification by faith alone, split over Zwingli and Luther's disagreement over the nature of the Lord's Supper. Since that time, the Reformed and Lutheran traditions have developed their own theological convictions, and continue to disagree with one another. It is incumbent upon students of the reformation, in the Lutheran and Reformed traditions, to come to an understanding of what these differences are, and why they matter. In The Great Divide: A Lutheran Evaluation of Reformed Theology, Jordan Cooper examines these differences from a Lutheran perspective. While seeking to help both sides come to a more nuanced understanding of one another, and writing in an irenic tone, Cooper contends that these differences do still matter. Throughout the work, Cooper engages with Reformed writers, both contemporary and old, and demonstrates that the Lutheran tradition is more consistent with the teachings of Scripture than the Reformed. "This book delivers what it promises without getting distracted, overwhelmed, or muted with qualifications. Cooper speaks with clarity and conviction and makes plain the real differences that exist between the Reformed and the Lutheran branches of Reformation faith. The book can be read profitably by anyone committed to biblical fidelity and doctrinal integrity, but especially by those convinced that the differences between Wittenberg and Geneva are trivial and inconsequential, or cause for dismissive condemnations." --Joel Biermann, Professor of Systematic Theology, Concordia Seminary Jordan Cooper is pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka, IL and host of the Just and Sinner podcast. He is the author of Christification: A Lutheran Approach to Theosis (2014).

By j.ketterman If you are looking for a fair Lutheran examination of Reformed Theology, I believe this is the book you are looking for. While this book hasn't persuaded me to become Lutheran, I believe that Mr. Cooper presents one of the strongest critiques of Reformed Theology. Many Lutheran works are plagued with misrepresentations of the Reformed faith, but Mr Cooper seeks to provide an accurate presentation and examination of Reformed Theology. While I'm not persuaded to convert to Lutheranism, this book helps highlight key points of division between both traditions.

It is difficult to find resources that accurately critique Lutheran theology. It is also hard to find Lutheran materials that interact with popular teachers of other christian traditions. This book fills that void. Cooper fairly presents Reformed theology and its challenges to Lutheranism. He is fair and straightforward, presenting reformed theology from the views of biggest names in Reformed theology. He carefully backs up his understanding of reformed theology with references to the reformed confessions, the likes of Calvin, Bavink, etc. The author also frequently interacts with popular teachers today such as John Piper, R.C. Sproul, Mike Horton, and James White. This is, in my view, one of the greatest strengths of the book. These teachers are very influential in the broad reformed movement. It has been helpful to hear another voice challenge these teachers from a Lutheran perspective.Overall, I find the Lutheran critique of reformed theology a strong one. The author presents his case from the scriptures. He shows not only exegetically why the Lutheran view is most faithful to the biblical text but also its pastoral and practical benefits. This pastoral and practical approach was helpful in seeing the outcomes of these two branches of the Reformation. I would recommend this book to anyone in the "New Calvinism" movement or those seeking to gain a better understanding of Lutheran theology.

Very Good Introduction to the Issue By Katy Leimbach For anyone looking to understand the differences between the two great theological branches of the reformation and why they matter need to get their hands on this book. The author, Jordan Cooper, is able to explain the Reformed perspective in a way that does not caricature the perspective as he critiques it in light of the Lutheran position. As a newly converted Lutheran from Presbyterianism Cooper's book is a much welcomed polemic because a true theologically robust interaction between the Lutheran and the Reformed seems to be lacking in the modern conversations within the evangelical world. Most outside the Lutheran communion have a tendency to either lump Lutheran theology in with Calvinism while others dismiss Lutherans as closet Arminians. This book helps show that Lutheran theology is a unique perspective from both Calvinism and Arminianism and should be treated as such. The book is divided into three parts Predestination and Free Will, Worship, and Salvation. I am so glad that Cooper goes in-depth on issues besides just Lutheran distinctives on monergistic soteriology and the sacraments because it was my doubts over the Regulative Principle of Worship that led me down the path half a year ago to begin digging into Lutheran theology. I was overjoyed that Cooper included a lengthy discussion on the issue. It was seeing how a theology of worship plays out in church life that I began to see that the Reformed tend to let their interpretation of the Word of God be led by reason while Lutherans allow their reason to be led by the Word of God. Whenever the Lutheran and Reformed disagree the way in which the two sides approach scripture is always the determining factor on why their theological positions fall where they do. Once a person allows their reason to be held captive by scripture other distinctly Lutheran doctrines seemingly jump from the Biblical pages.Again I highly recommend Cooper's book to anyone interested in the divide between Lutherans and Presbyterians. While I had already changed my theological perspective before reading it this book my change would have probably come much sooner if I had this resource earlier.

This is an ideal reference book for all those interested in studying how the Great Commission is being fulfilled in the 21st cen By Karl Dumas Some thoughts on "MISSIOLOGY_ 2nd Edition The message doesn’t change but the method of delivering it does. That is evident in sermons, in ‘church music’, and the way we do missions. Back in 1997 the first edition of Missiology was published, and now in 2015 the 2nd edition of Missiology: An Introduction to the Foundations, History, and Strategies of World Missions (edited by John Mark Terry, published by B&H Academic) is available. Again the message doesn’t change, but the way we take that message to the world certainly has changed. The nations are coming to us in numbers greater than ever before and at times we have to adapt to the changing climate. If you're a big fan of 3-point sermons you might wonder why this wasn’t broken into 3 sections instead of 5, but sometimes we have to change the way we do things. There is a logic to the sub-divisions, and the papers are neatly arranged according to several themes, the study of missions, a Biblical basis, theology history, and application. (For you three-pointers, you have an intro, 3 points and an application.)Many prominent names in the field of Missiology are included in the list of authors represented in this edition. They are noted scholars who have advanced the study of Missions through their experience and writing. This is an ideal reference book for all those interested in studying how the Great Commission is being fulfilled in the 21st century…and it certainly has changed over the last few hundred years. Although I have no complaints about the authors, the papers, or the way things are arranged, I would have liked to see some indication of when the papers were actually written (and maybe that's there and I missed it). Especially when things are being updated, it's helpful for me to be able to look back and see how things have changed. Is the change something that has been happening over the past 50 years or 100? Or is it a recent (3-5 years) change? This a must for the reference shelf of anyone interested in missions.I received this book for free from B&H for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Hurst “The canon of Scripture has not changed, but missions changes every day.”Though the message of missions does not change, the methods do. Because so, books on missions strategies require updating. Originally published in 1998, Missiology: An Introduction to the Foundations, History, and Strategies of World Missions (B&H) has now a second edition under the same title. This second edition reflects the changing tides in missions needs, both biblically and culturally, and the strategies developed to meet those needs in light of the changing missions culture(s).The vast majority of content of the book has stayed the same. Almost one third of the chapters have remained untouched in both content and contributor (though I cannot tell without seeing the 1st edition if any of these chapters were revised). Almost half of the other chapters have stayed the same in content but the contributor is new. These new contributors include Christopher J. H. Wright, Eckhard Schnabel, Ed Stetzer, Benjamin Merkle, and J. D. Greear. Seven chapters from the first edition have been completely replaced (like the chapter on music and one of the chapters on education and missions) with seven new chapters. These new chapters reflect the changes in missions over the past nearly twenty years that this second edition seeks to be current on. Some of these new chapters address issues like women in missions, business and missions, and missions in China.Designed as a textbook, I can only see this book continuing and expanding its use, especially in light of the new contributors. While there are five sections, this book has the three main components of teaching missions: theology, history, and practice. As such, this book offers a broad look at missions. It is rooted in Scripture and seeks continuity with that in its practical chapters. As with a book like this, it is up to the teacher and reader to expand on the content of the chapters. What is said here is not the end of the discussion but rather a window into the various issues involved. With the addition of some of the new contributors this book will no doubt receive wider use across denominational and theological lines. This book would also be good for pastors seeking to strengthen their missions mindset as well as those within our churches who are heads of missions ministries.I received this book for free from B&H for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
