Exceptional and unique book for a wife caregiver on dementia care from home to long-term care By Ethelle Lord This book is an important addition to any library or study program in dementia care. Ms. Gentile researched a group of eight wife caregivers in her final year of her Master’s of Clinical Social Work studies in Canada and documented the results in this book. What is exceptional about her book is that each chapter contains information on dementia and dementia care, resources to explore, and a journal feature that is unique. Journals are designed to keep important information, dates, names, and feelings that may be otherwise lost or forgotten over time. They are extremely practical when doing self-care as care providers. The majority of caregivers are women and a wife caregiver does carry a special burden, pain, grief unique to their circumstances of providing day-to-day care to their husband. I know, I’ve been there and wish this book had been available to me. This is an easy read to help wife caregivers understand the journey ahead. The author not only gives important facts that everyone who will provide dementia care needs to know, she also outlines the positive side of caregiving which in fact is at the very foundation of great care:• A sense of giving back to someone who has cared for them• A sense of knowing a loved one is getting excellent care• Personal growth• Increased meaning and purpose in one’s lifeToo many times caregiving is represented as a crippling and deadly responsibility. Knowing there is a greater purpose to caregiving gives all caregivers the hope. It is hope that will help them to carry on and complete the journey. Angela Gentile’s book is inspiring, informative, and practical. A must read for every caregiver, especially the wife caregiver.Dr. Ethelle LordPresident at International Caregivers Association (ICA)internationalcaregiversassociation (dot) com

Austin As a gerontologist who focuses on cognition, dementia and caregiving, I was pleased to read Gentile's guidebook. She has many years' general professional experience working with older adults. More specifically, she spent several months supporting 8 women whose husbands had dementia. This book is a product of their caregiving journeys. It was very kind for these 8 women to loan their experience to the writing of this book, and it was kind of Gentile to spend the time giving voice to that experience so that others following might benefit.I admire the way Gentile conveys practical tips with a tone of great compassion. Her guidebook covers an array of concerns: an introduction to dementia, emotional considerations, practical tips, and resources. Most of the chapters contain space for writing down thoughts, feelings or action plans. She is Canadian, so some of the resources are rooted in that country's services. Nevertheless, the overwhelming majority of the book has universal appeal to family caregivers, particularly wives (obviously). But I can see husbands, siblings and adult children also finding value in reading through Gentile's book. It's a very good first look at issues central to dementia caregiving. It's not too technical, but it's also specific enough to offer guidelines on how to negotiate some of the challenges and opportunities of living with a family member who has dementia.

An Empowering Comprehensive Resource, Suitable For Any Caregiver By Kathryn Harrison From its welcoming cover, I felt like this was a book on my side and that feeling never ended. Kind, honest, knowledgeable and extremely practical, this comprehensive and well-organized resource, although written specifically for wives, leaves any dementia caregiver so much better prepared to face this journey. I wish I had this book when caring for my mom.In content, it covers everything from feelings to finances in a comfortable, matter-of-fact style. It’s packed full of facts and findings from credible sources to support all points. You can read it all the way through or use the detailed Table of Contents to flip to your topic of choice.I particularly liked the short exercises at the back of each chapter that enable you to pause and reflect on the content for your specific situation. And because of Angela’s rich and extensive experience in the field, she includes both explanations behind troubling behaviours and very long lists of suggestion for handling. Her subhead, “Survival Guide” is very appropriate! For a caregiver, this book assuredly and succinctly takes you by the hand and leads you calmly through the things you likely will encounter, the feelings you likely will have, the resources available and the things to do. You are left stronger, validated, empowered and relieved of worry – much more ready for what comes next!
