Luke Rayburn has spent summer vacation running up and down sandy beaches with his family. He’s explored hidden coves, learned how to write invisible letters, and even met an ocean nymph. But his friends write to tell him of strange happenings in Countryside and he’s anxious to get back. When Luke returns, he finds that much has changed. Mischievous gnomes are spreading chaos across the valley, a lone wolf haunts the forests, and Mayeem, one of Luke’s new teachers, just happens to be a mermaid. And then there’s the hunter, a man with golden eyes, only part of a soul and the belief that Luke has hidden something he wants—something he’s willing to destroy Countryside in order to get. Hounded by blackhearted men and soulless creatures and with darkness luring him in, Luke must gather his wits and ferret out his true friends. But as he draws close to finding what it is the hunter seeks, he will learn that there is more at stake than he understands. He’ll learn that it’s not the hunter he should be afraid of and that, once done, some things cannot be undone.

By Tonja Drecker After reading the first book in the series, I was looking forward to see what happens to Luke and his friends next. And I wasn't disappointed.Luke is as curious and adventurous as ever, and although he's told time and again to stay clear of the dangers 'attacking' the area, Luke can't stay out of it. Some of this is due to circumstances beyond his control. Other times, it's not. But it's exactly this inability to always obey, which makes him a true kid. Luke is in general a good kid too. . .despite the darkness that he's trying to control. . .and truly respects those around him. Sometimes he looses his temper, but again, it's these characteristics which make it easy for readers to relate to him. From the first gnome attack in the beginning pages, Luke and his friends find themselves wrapped up in an unexpected adventure. Dangerous creatures, creepy individuals, puzzling messages and all sorts of magic make a delightful mystery full of tension and surprises, which kept me guessing until the very end. Kids will love diving into the fantasy filled world, while following Luke and his friends as they try to figure out what is really going on.My favorite part of this series is the simpleness of the world. Despite the mythical creatures and use of magic, much of the described world is familiar--sports, teachers, and lemonade. The scenes are beautifully described making it easy to dive into the world. And the importance of family and friends, and the love they have for each other is always clear no matter how bad things get. This is a fun series, full of adventure, action and fantasy, which kids ages nine and up are sure to enjoy.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book starts a little bit after the first book ends. Luke and his family have been on vacation but unexpectedly decide to end it early and return to Countryside. When they get back, Luke finds out that all sorts of strange things have been going on. There are gnomes acting crazy, wolves, and then a hunter who wants something from Luke himself! Luke has no clue what he wants but he has to find out before all of Countryside is destroyed!I really do adore Luke! He has changed so much since the start of the first book. I also love how the different friends and family are all written into the book and have their own special roles to play. The place itself, Countryside, seems very much like a place I would love to visit, even with its issues. I can picture it as I read the pages of the story. I thought since this is a young adult book, I would be able to guess/figure it out quickly and easily but not so much! The author did a good job with the story line and kept me guessing. I cannot wait to see what happens next. This is a 5/5 for me. It is second in the series so read the first one first but once you do, you will have to read this!Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Oliver I really enjoyed this book, and found that it was even better than the first book, Countryside: The Book of Wisdom." The adventures of Luke Rayburn and his family and friends continues a few months after the first book ends as Luke and his family have been vacationing at the beach. Two things happen that ends their vacation early. First, there is a visit from a mermaid who delivers a message from home, then huge wolves try to attack them in the evening and they barely get back to their vacation cottage. They pack everything and get ready to leave in the morning.Once back home, Luke is reunited with his friends who update him on the odd things that have been happening all summer while he has been gone. Gnomes are wreaking havoc, wolves are on the prowl, and now there is The Hunter, who believes Luke has what he is hunting, though Luke has no clue what it is.There are clues that there will be several more books in the series as there are other things that need to be found, and each item leads Luke and his friends on harrowing adventures. Dark men and creatures are finding their way into Countryside, each with their own story and adventures, and each book gets better than the last. I'm looking forward to them all!
