Joseph Smith wasn’t merely the Book of Mormon’s prophetic translator—he was also a student of the sacred record. Schooling the Prophet offers evidence that the Latter-day Saint prophet was quietly influenced by one of the most important sources of religious thought and sacred protocol that he knew—the Book of Mormon—on issues such as the nature of God, priesthood, and the temple.

Review
“Gerald Smith asks a pertinent question: How did the Book of Mormon influence Joseph Smith’s restoration? He has thought long and hard about the issue and gives us here the results of his investigations. His answer: From temple culture and the priesthood to the doctrine of God and baptism, the Book of Mormon profoundly shaped the doctrines and practices of the restored church.” –Richard L. Bushman, Gouverneur Morris Professor Emeritus of History, Columbia University, and author of Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling“Painstakingly researched and carefully written, Gerald Smith's Schooling the Prophet shows how deep—as the subtitle of the book states—was the influence of the Book of Mormon on Joseph Smith and the early restoration. Gerald Smith's study demonstrates how profoundly—and paradoxically, since Joseph Smith only occasionally cited it—the Book of Mormon shaped early Latter-day Saint theology and practice, including baptism, the sacrament, the temple, and the concept of Zion. Warmly to be recommended.” —Stephen D. Ricks, Professor of Hebrew and Cognate Learning, Brigham Young University“With great attention to historical detail, this book brings to light the critical and often overlooked influence the Book of Mormon had on the restoration of the priesthood, church administration, temple, and other ordinances revealed to Joseph Smith. Gerald Smith’s portrayal of the Prophet’s schooling illuminates a pattern God still uses to teach his children.” —Barbara Morgan, Director of Boston LDS Institute and Assistant Professor of Religion, Brigham Young University

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Scholarly for scholars, yet faith-promoting for believers By Coco T This was a terrific book. As a practicing Mormon, I found the book to be really insightful and faith-building, as it confirmed and expanded on my own general assumptions and understandings of the Prophet Joseph's use of and relationship to the Book of Mormon - ideas which seem obvious after years of Sunday School and scripture study, yet hadn't been researched or articulated in my mind, or in print that I knew of prior to reading this book.I'd imagine it's a tough balance appealing to a variety of audiences: both non-Mormon and Mormon, scholarly and non-scholarly. I can't say how a non-Mormon would receive the book, but I like that even though it's written by a Mormon it's tone is more geared to everyone. I found the research to be of excellent quality and depth, and I liked the use of sources which draw from LDS sources but also broader Hebrew and historical scholarship. Above all, this book makes a scholarly contribution, while also - for believers - adds to one's understanding of their own faith. And that's a great combination!

Dr. Smith’s approach to Schooling the Prophets is impressive and refreshingly thought provoking. He seamlessly weaves Latter-day Saint history, scripture, and insight to create a compelling thesis regarding the Book of Mormon and its influence on the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, particularly its influence on Joseph Smith. All those that would like a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Book of Mormon and its translator should read this book. While the text is focused on Mormon ideologies, those from any religion can learn about a unique era in American religious history. Indeed, while Mormonism is sometimes misunderstood, Dr. Smith allows readers from all faiths and backgrounds to learn and identify with one seeking insight and guidance from a religious text. Dr. Smith is an articulate scholar who has an incredible amount of knowledge to contribute to any religious studies curriculum.
