In this present day Christian fiction novel, the Roman Curia may be the only hope for the world to survive after a cataclysmic event. But, that success hinges on the participation of the Eastern Orthodox churches and the Holy Women of the world, all led by a modern-day Holy Fool and the woman who gave up all to serve at his side. Is there REALLY any hope?

An engaging "coming of age" novel By Joella I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book -- romance? apocalyptic themes? church history? -- but I was pleasantly surprised by it. In my view, although all of those elements are present, it is mainly a quasi-historical fiction (set in the 1990s) "coming of age" novel, about the main character Misha figuring out what his place is in the world, experiencing romantic love for the first time, and sorting out how those feelings fit with what he begins to sense is his larger purpose. Eventually you do read about the cataclysmic event promised on the back cover, but that is far from the focus of the book. The focus is on the events that shaped young Misha and prepared him, and his beloved, for their ultimate roles. The characters are entirely believable, while also being extraordinary. The setting in Russia (and, later, the Vatican), and the exploration of the relationship between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, offer the reader what I love best about historical fiction, which is a glimpse of and education about another time and place. All in all, I found this an easy and enjoyable read and would recommend it to others.

By Erin Fritz Holy Fool Holy Father was an insightful work of historical fiction that straddles both the secular world and Christian faith. The story opens in a small town in Kazakhstan during the end of the Cold War. The protagonist, a 15 year old boy, talented in math and science, finds true love at a regional competition. He is also strong in faith and gifted with perception of catastrophic events. We follow his life as he grows to manhood and seeks out God's will for himself. He's torn by his love and God's purpose for him. A lot happens leading up to the present time in the book but to give much more would be to spoil the plot.I like this book for many reasons.1) Shows the struggle people have who dedicate their lives to God. I can't say much more on this front without giving details of the story away but I enjoyed this aspect the most.2) The book also shows how people with simple and humble beginnings develop over time into spiritual leaders. It doesn't come from birth or from a single incident. Usually it's a progression over time as in this case.3) Reveals Russian culture in a positive way. We've all learned about the atrocities of communism and Russia definitely had a dark spot in history. But while this book doesn't hide that, it chooses to show the lives of average people trying to learn, love, and pray. Yes, the USSR was harsh on religion (which is putting things lightly) but the timeframe at the beginning of the book was while things were beginning to lighten up in the eighties/nineties. There is the occasional tie in to current events unfolding but they are always "off screen" so to speak. The author instead choose more intimate settings to develop the relationships and reveal Russian cultural ideas through conversation.4) How two different religious sects (Catholic and Russian Orthodox) can build upon each other in harmony instead of conflict. This especially shows respect to both religious views and does a service to the protagonist's Russian heritage.5) Respect is given to both the physical sciences and religion. Not only is the protagonist a scientist (astronomer or cosmologist) but the book melds both disciplines without doing a disservice to either. That's hard to find in literature today.I do have a couple criticisms. I felt that the motivations of Anastasia could have been explored more. I felt there were a lot of interesting themes, maybe too many of them.I would highly recommend the book. For certain, those interested in Russian culture, Catholic or religious themes, and science would find this book a worthy read. I am personally very interested in the topics of cosmology and religion. Even though astronomy isn't the main theme of the book I appreciate it's presence within the book.

I am a Roman Catholic and so it piqued my interest. I found the characters very refreshing and believable. The main character was a young teen who had a very devout faith in God. He wanted to follow after God implicitly and felt led for great things. He then falls in love with a remarkable young girl who also believes he has a calling on his life. A nice change to read about young people who truly and passionately want to live out their faith, not just in words but in action. The respect and love he has for his elders also showed what kind of young man he truly was. I thought the book was going to be more about the cataclysmic event, but that happened somewhat right at the end. Which was fine. I really enjoyed the story line and all of the characters. The love between the two characters was almost palpable. I felt so torn for them in the decisions they had to make. They had such strong convictions, which seems rare these days.I felt like I was reading a bit of history in this book , as well. I am wanting to delve deeper now, after reading this book, into the EasternOrthodox Church, to learn of the differences between them and the Roman catholic church. I visited Italy last summer so reading about the Vatican means that much more to me. Even if you are not Catholic or Eastern Orthodox I feel that you would find this story very likeable. Itgave a person a lot to think about. It had me questioning my own faith and if I truly live it to its fullestI enjoyed this book very much and found myself staying up later than I should to read it.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
