''When a Vancouver timber cruiser signs on for a treasure hunt for the long-lost 'Loot of Lima', he finds more heartbreak, hilarity, danger, disaster and insanity aboard the tuna clipper Sweet Fanny Adams than he's ever seen in the forests of British Columbia. Part modern pirate adventure, part evocation of a much-loved country, part love story, The Crooked Albatross and Sweet Fanny Adams throws an improbable mix of human beings into the backwaters of Costa Rica, and tracks their shenanigans in a tale you won't forget.''--Katie McCabe, author of Justice Older than the Law

Review ''Every point-blank pistol shot in a soft belly, every cutlass slash spurting bright blood into the fire-light, it was one less share for the crew and one more for Captain Thompson.'' --J. Ratcliffe

About the Author

Have you read all those author's biographies listing all their strange pursuits? Well, Leigh Cross is no different. Excepting the priesthood he followed most of the occupations he's written about: Korean War Veteran, pilot, sailor, logger, horse-farmer, machinist, cellist, music historian--is that enough? He hopes so. Leigh was born an American but he got over it. He currently lives in Vancouver and when he's not writing, he builds Art Nouveau furniture, and is developing an electric tricycle.

Holy cow! Is he still here? Call for the men in the white coats with the big, white laundry bag!

This is a novel in the sty By Nicola Aime The title pulled me in with its sly, ribald humour, and then immediately delivered with a first line which must rank among storytelling’s great openings. This is a novel in the style of a good, old-fashioned yarn brought to life in modern times by author Leigh Cross who, I suspect, knows more about adventuring than he should. It is a tale of modern day piracy, smuggling, treasure hunting, and buccaneering that clicks along at a terrific pace through Vancouver, Panama, Costa Rica and a rather unpleasant South American island. The characters are eccentrics, misfits, and just appealing enough to keep us engaged throughout their quest for untold fortune—or at the very least, a quick buck. Fraught with clashing personalities and bad decisions, this ill-matched crew blunders its way from adventure to misadventure with a delicious inevitability. The author’s impressive knowledge of small plane piloting and craft sailing adds heft to the story, as do his amusing observations into the different cultures—and their foibles—represented among the various characters. If you feel like escaping from the tedious realities of your daily life, then catch the wave of this well-written tale and hang on tight for a wild ride that will leave you laughing, thoroughly satisfied, but rather happy to be on dry land yourself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It holds together. By Brek Renzelman Mainly perhaps with the literary equivalent of chewing gum and bundling wire, but the story works. The best parts for me were the detailed descriptions of engines and boats and airplanes, all things mechanical, which evidently Mr. Cross knows about firsthand. His descriptions of logging operations and engine maintenance and craft of various kinds have the ring of authenticity, and the author imbues these parts of the book with his directness bordering on saltiness, which I found refreshing. The bulk of the yarn revolves around a Central American region and tropical locales with which he may also be familiar, but some of these descriptions struck this reader as less authentic, not as ‘lived in’ as the Canadian parts of the story. (And I am left with questions: would visitors to the tropics really gorge themselves on a dinner including heavy North American fare like apple pie while moored in the sweltering heat at a Panamanian dock?)Mr. Cross evidently doesn’t like stuffy, self-absorbed Englishmen. And I suppose, who can blame him? This shows in the dialogue he gives to various characters, including purportedly historical ones in the prologue that sets up the pirate premise. But the characterizations in these instances and elsewhere throughout the book are cartoonish, the dialogue bluntly mocking, and I grew frustrated with this cardboard approach right away in the prologue and found it really bogged things down. Thankfully, the tedium was shortly relieved for me with an entertaining albeit raw account of boobies (the birds) being boobies. And before long, the main story unfolds.Brisk, no-nonsense plot, eschewing any potentially ‘bothersome’ (to the writer, not the reader) writerly finesse in handling most of the transitions from one scenario to the next, and before you know it, your author has led you through a fairly interesting romp. Not great literature—maybe not even literature at all, really. But worth taking a twirl.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A really fun read. By Gordon J Bateman From the rain forests of the British Columbia coast to sweltering the tropics of Costa Rica,Leigh Cross spins a wild and rolicking tale of misadventure with as ragged and complicated a crew of ner-do-wells and social misfits as you would hope to find anywhere.A really fun read..sit back in your favorite chair, fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride..
