Through strange metaphysical circumstances, failed screenwriter Brad Cohen finds himself caught in an infinite time loop, forced to relive the first forty years of his life again and again. Each “repeat,” Brad wakes up in the womb on what was supposed to be his fortieth birthday, with full knowledge of what’s come before. In various timelines, he becomes a successful political pundit, a game-show champion, a playboy, and a master manipulator of the stock market, but none of them seem to lead him out of his predicament. As he realizes he wants to break out of the loop and find the love of his life—the one he hadn’t appreciated the first time around—Brad tries, fails, and tries again to escape the eternal cycle of birth and rebirth. Repeat answers the question: If you could live half your life over, would you do things differently? Be careful what you wish for! Repeating is enough to drive a dude crazy.

Review

"I have thought about turning forty every day since I turned forty, and yet no one has captured in more hilarious and humane detail the profound upending that occurs on that day, and the calamitous desire for a do-over. I don’t want Brad’s curse-blessing, but if I had to read this book again and again every day for year, I wouldn’t mind at all." —John Hodgman, correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and author of The Areas of My Expertise, More Information Than You Require, and That Is All

Out of all the books I read, maybe a tenth get a review at all. That said, this book is fantastic. I absolutely loved it.The story is not overly long, details are maybe on the light side in regards to the story, but there is something about how it's written that just works.I could not read it all in one sitting as work issues called, but the story was so engaging it was on my mind an entire day, just niggling at me to come home and finish.Bravo, Mr. Pollack... You have a new fan here, I'll be seeking out the rest of your work immediately.

By Alison V Freer This suspiciously autobiographical-esque novel follows a 40-year old writer who can't stop re-living his failures until he gets a chance to actually re-live those first 40 years--more than once. His hilarious "do-overs" are where the book really shines, but even the introduction signals that you are in for a funny ride. Also, as the description helpfully notes, this book contains real page numbers.

Second, let me say that after the first twenty pages or so I was a little ambivalent about the whole thing. The premise did not really excite me and frankly I could have just ended my first Pollack read after about 15 minutes.I am glad I didn't. After continuing a bit longer, I found myself getting caught up in the story although there was no real earth-shattering buzz generated. When I read fiction I usually gravitate toward books that offer a little more excitement or energy in the plot line. This book is decidedly different. It took a little while to become absorbed in the story, but when I did I found it to be quite interesting and extremely well written. Pollack has a talent for prose. It was well done and the editors and proof readers did a good job as well.No real "spoilers" here, but suffice it to say that the lead character has a unique solution presented to him for dealing with a mid-life crisis. This "repeating" solution gets a little redundant, but it is saved by the author after three or so repetitions by advancing the story along and providing different characters and an expanding story line. One of the real graces of this book is the humor written into a lot of the narrative. In some places the wit is plainly evident, in others it is barely perceivable. But the satire is there throughout the book, and if you like prose that is imbued with humorous anecdotes and conversation, then you will like this book. Let me give you a few examples...While lamenting his career choices the main character, Brad, offers this thought... "...you only get one chance in life. His career browser couldn't be refreshed. Brad was just about out of dimes for the meter..."While in a dispensary buying pot this delightful exchange occurred... "...She slid a fat joint into a paper bag. "It's a present from us," she said. "Is it sativa?" he said. "It's a blend," she said. "Mostly shake." Brad appreciated her generosity but knew that if he smoked the wrong stuff, it could really mess up his brain. He was forty now, basically, and he had to be careful..."Then there is this oh so poignant bit of prose... "...They held each other and cried, terrified of what was coming next. And then they made a baby, an act that always solves life's problems."The book is full of these satirical pearls. By the time I was finished with it I was smiling and laughing at the frequently occurring comic narrative. I put the book down (well, Kindle..) and considered what I had just read. I was slow warming up to it, but after finishing it I realized that I was pleased to have done so and my muse was pleasantly sated. So four stars for a well composed and written story. It isn't my very favorite novel, but it was well worth the time spent. If you don't require constant action in your reading, AND you enjoy forays into humorous situation and narrative, then you will like this book. I can recommend it...
