A hugely entertaining debut—the first novel in a wickedly funny gothic mystery series set in the withering landscape of the southern Illinois coal country known as “little Egypt”—that blends the wry humor of Kevin Wilson, the dark violence of Urban Waite, and the electric atmosphere of Greg Iles.

In the depths of the Knight Hawk, one of the last working collieries in downstate Illinois, the body of a reporter is found, his mini-recorder tied around his neck and a notepad stuffed in his mouth.

The Knight Hawk’s owner, Matthew Luster, isn’t happy. He wants answers—and he doesn’t want the cops or any more press poking into his business. To protect himself and the operation, he turns to Slim, a mine employee with a reputation for “bloodhounding”-finding lost souls when the police can’t or won’t. Luster needs Slim to locate a missing photographer named Beckett, a close associate of the victim . . . who just happens to be his son-in-law.

A hard-working single father barely making ends meet, Slim accepts the job—after Luster offers him a guaranteed pension and job security for life. But when you make a deal with the devil, you’re going to get burned . . . . and now Slim is all too close to the flames. Circumstances have lead him into the grimy underworld of Little Egypt, Illinois—a Babel’s Tower of rednecks, rubes, freaks, tweakers, gun nuts, and aging hippies-and it quickly becomes clear that he’s much more involved in the murder than an innocent man should be.

Down Don’t Bother Me marks the emergence of a wildly assured mystery novelist, and of a series set in the fresh and brutal landscape of southern Illinois.

Review “Long stretches of this unusual first novel would seem to require guitar accompaniment. The genre conventions-treacherous women, double-crossing friends, greedy moneymen-seem fresh in Miller’s sensory-rich language….Here’s a strong talent just getting under way.” (Booklist)“Fans of FX’s Justified TV series, as well as the show’s Elmore Leonard source material, will welcome the tough-talking Slim and the eccentric cast of characters he meets along the way in this series launch by the coauthor of the graphic novel Redball Six.” (Library Journal)“Down Don’t Bother Me marks the emergence of a wildly assured mystery novelist, and of a series set in the fresh and brutal landscape of southern Illinois.” (New Orleans Public Library)“In his first novel, set in the hardly welcoming world of southern Illinois coal country, he is funny, smart, and extremely self-assured in his writing, creating a book that is almost as addicting as the meth that has taken over the town of Little Egypt, Illinois.” (Mystery Scene)“Miller brings the reader into the cold Illinois landscape with his vivid imagery.” (Life Sentence)“Miller’s first novel is raw, gritty and darkly comedic. The first-person POV is perfect for this telling, and readers will fall for Slim quickly. His relationship with his teenage daughter Anci, while typical of the teenage years, is refreshingly real. Overall a fantastic debut novel.” (RT Book Reviews)“While this novel is funny and violent, it also chronicles the soul-sapping meanness and danger of work in the mines. (Memphis Commercial Appeal)“Jason Miller has delivered a crime novel with all the satisfactions of the genre, coupled with a serious, resonant subtext and the promise of more adventures to come for his offbeat protagonist.” (Chapter 16)

From the Back Cover

I'd been demoted and was shoveling slide-back and minding my own business when they found Dwayne Mays's body in a pile of gob. Shoveling slide-back is maybe the worst job in the mine. Slide-back is what they give you when they want you to quit. It's a punishment.

So with respect to this book I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the book is loaded with familiar detective novel tropes, tarnished knight, suffering girl friend, estranged dad of detective and young daughter of detective who is imperiled by detective's investigation. The good news is that Miller Is a clever and original writer with a dark sense of humor who manages to rise above the tropes and gives us an entertaining read. I would like to see Miller write a stand alone novel showcasing his considerable skills.

Miller is a skillful storyteller who spins a great yarn, applying a light and playful touch to genre conventions with humor and a superbly tuned ear. The setting is the coal mines of Southern Illinois, and I found some of the atmosphere and characters reminiscent (in a good way) of Daniel Woodrell's better Ozark novels, but Miller writes his first book with a degree of poise, nuance, balance, and confidence that Woodrell did not achieve until he had several books under his belt. Between his setting, his characters, and his writing style, Miller has made a grand entrance into mystery writing: He has his own voice, which you won't mistake him for anyone else's, and he left me impatient for a sequel. The tropes of hard-boiled crime fiction are so well trodden that it is easy for them to become either trite and stale, when writers recycle them without adding anything new, or on the other hand to become arch or precious when the writer winks too obviously at the audience and plays the genre for farce. Chandler and Hammett were fully aware of the humor in hard-boiled writing and part of the fun in reading them is sharing the fun they had seeing how far they could push their writing (sometimes too far, as Jacques Barzun noted in accusing Chandler of a tin ear for "he looked about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food."). Miller navigates these hazards with skill and poise. His writing clearly lets the reader know that he's having fun, but he never breaks the illusion that you're listening to a person called Slim who is telling you his story. Miller's prose is playful and inviting, but always in service of telling Slim's story in Slim's voice, and when things turn menacing the threat is just as real and compelling as the humor. The plot is nicely complex: there are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and surprise you when you least expect it, but it never felt contrived. Politics---especially around labor and the environment---are deeply woven into the book, in a way that adds texture without ever feeling preachy. The politics arise organically from who the characters are, and never felt didactic. The book creates several compelling characters in Slim's life and part of what makes the story so compelling is not just the mystery but the relationships the characters have with each other, and the way they evolve as the story plays out. The one real hole I felt is that Slim's relationship (or lack thereof) with his father is presented so much in negative space (what isn't said). The father is clearly larger than life and scary in Slim's mind and in the minds of many other characters, but this gives the character much less texture than the others in the book.Down Don't Bother Me is a superb debut and I am eager to see what Miller does next.

I am rarely caught off guard, but Miller managed to pull off more than one surprise in his character actions and the ending. I plan to reread this novel in the near future in order to figure out where my deductive reasoning failed me! Kudos Mr. Miller! Anxiously awaiting the future installments!
