Wedding Night: A Novel, by Sophie Kinsella

From Booklist Kinsella’s latest romantic romp revolves around two sisters with very different notions about love. Impulsive Lottie is expecting her boyfriend, Richard, to propose to her; she’s floored when he instead suggests a vacation using his frequent-flier miles. When Richard balks at the idea of marriage, Lottie breaks up with him. She runs straight into the arms of an old flame, Ben, with whom she spent a magical summer at the age of 18 on the island of Ikonos. Ben is more than ready to rekindle their relationship and walk down the aisle with her. When Lottie’s practical older sister, Fliss, gets wind of her plan to marry Ben, Fliss is determined to stop the nuptials. Ben’s coworker Lorcan seems equally opposed to the wedding, and Fliss thinks they’re set, until Lottie and Ben have a hasty ceremony and jet to Ikonos. Fliss decides she has to sabotage the honeymoon in the hopes of getting Lottie to see that she’s making a huge mistake. There’s plenty of silly fun to be had in this charming comedy of errors. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The kicky new romantic comedy by #1 New York Times best-selling Kinsella of Shopaholic fame will be supported by a major multimedia promotional campaign. --Kristine Huntley

My favorite was "Can You Keep A Secret?" and my least favorite was "Mini Shopaholic."That being said, I am like a kid on Christmas Eve when I know a new Kinsella book is out. So perhaps all that exciting build up contributed to the fact that after I read Wedding Night, I was a bit disappointed. It is typical Kinsella (every single protagonist could be Lucy from I Love Lucy)- but that's the charm of a Kinsella book!Wedding Night follows the same outline - Lottie is the typical Kinsella character; always finds herself in mishaps. But...for some reason, her character's complete denial and over thinking made me not completely adore her character like I usually do a Kinsella character. Then we have the character of Fliss - Lottie's older sister. Wedding Night goes back and forth between Lottie's viewpoint and Fliss's viewpoint - and when reading Fliss's viewpoint - it's more or less just rehashing what already happened to Lottie - which makes this book drag (it kills me to say anything negative about a Kinsella book!).And it's long. Almost 500 pages. This would be fine if Wedding Night is a page turner, but for me, I never found myself saying "OMG, what's going to happen next?"A bit disappointing - like flat champagne. My advice: If you're a die hard Kinsella fan and aren't pinching your pennies - go ahead and buy it (I'd still advise you to look for a sale price, I don't believe it's worth the list price of 26.00$)If you're watching your money - you can safely wait for paperback - or better yet, borrow it.I'm being generous with the 4 star rating. It was more than "ok" but I certainly didn't love it like I did most of her other books. (And it kills me to admit that!)Love you Sophie! Thank you for so many years of entertainment! You're very appreciated! Keep On Writing!

I was pretty excited to be able to get her new novel, Wedding Night, from Amazon Vine. Unfortunately I can't say that it's her best work. It reminded me of a situation comedy TV program where everything that happens is based on misunderstandings and the stupidity of the characters, and after a while I just want to scream, "Why are all of you so idiotic?!" and change the channel. This new book features two sisters, Lottie and Fliss, neither of whom have much self-awareness (although this is typical of Kinsella's heroines, they usually have a few redeeming qualities to balance the airheadedness). As the book opens, Lottie's expecting the big proposal from her boyfriend Richard and Fliss is still recovering from a difficult divorce. Fliss is used to having to pick up the pieces whenever Lottie gets herself into a mess, and, not surprisingly, Lottie gets herself into a huge mess in this book. Both sisters end up learning a lot about themselves, and the pieces more or less get put back together.I think what didn't work for me in this book was the extremely silly, farcical situations the characters are forced into - without going into spoilers, some of what Fliss does in the name of saving Lottie from her misadventures is ridiculous and unrealistic even for a romantic comedy (another reviewer's comparison to Lucy is apt), where you have to suspend your disbelief a little. I did laugh at times, but by the end I felt that women of Lottie and Fliss' ages (early 30s) should be a little smarter, especially Fliss, who seems to have a responsible job and is a parent to a 7-year-old. Lottie is a complete airhead and selfish to boot; she seems to be obsessed with events that happened in her past and hasn't moved on emotionally from when she was 18. It was hard to feel sympathy for her and I really didn't like her at all. Fliss comes across as a control freak. The male characters in the book - Lottie's boyfriend Richard, old flame Ben, and his business partner Lorcan - don't fare much better. Everyone in the book seems reality-challenged and unable to communicate, and it gets irritating after a while (and it's not a short book). I think the book would have worked better if there had been a few more grounded characters to balance out the silliness and self-delusion of the main characters.I would recommend this book only to Kinsella fans and I would recommend they wait for a paperback. I think it might be time for Kinsella to take the advice one of her characters cites and "reverse the strategy" - maybe create a character who actually has a few brain cells that are connected and see what happens. She's a good writer, but these books are getting to be a bit formulaic.
