About the Author Randolph Severson Ph.D. is a psychotherapist and writer whose many writings are known for their spirited eloquence and rhetorical style. An early student and assistant to James Hillman, he holds a doctorate in Existential Phenomenological Psychology from the Institute of Philosophic Studies at the University of Dallas renowned for its Inter-Disciplinary approach to Psychology, Literature, Philosophy and Politics.

It is a dance of words,of poetry, of ideas that span cultures and centuries; it is a dance of kindred souls. I first came to Dr. Severson's work through his writings on adoption reform, a field he worked in for many years. I went on to his more general psychological works, influenced by James Hillman and others, and now come to this book and Adler, whose essence I have come to know through the writings of Dr. Severson. I had always thought of Adler as a prosaic and practical psychologist, rooted in his place, Vienna, and his time,early 20th century. However, in this book Dr. Severson connects him with the great Western streams of philosophy, literature and poetry; ranging from ancient Greece and the concept of the Polis or city, through the Middle Ages and the mysterious Knights Templar and chivalry, to Faulkner's steamy Southern Mississippi world.There is a unique and original analysis of the influence of Nietzsche on Adler concerning the concepts of will and power; where they come together and where they diverge. The concept of power, central to Adler's work, is also examined through the lens of the classical concept of power as a civilizing force as held by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Dr. Severson wrote:"In working the classical definition of power in this way, that is by looking at what the Greeks did rather than what they said through the mouths of their philosophers, we are embodying Adler's injunction to look at what people do rather than what they say." Both the practicality of Adler's Individual Psychology and its inherent idealism and humanism are examined.The Hero also gets a fresh look through Adler, as "the image that transforms culture into civilization." Here the dance turns enchanted, dangerous, truly heroic; "here be dragons". Honor is invoked, and the old virtues as portrayed in the lives of heroes and saints. Secular Jew Alfred Adler dances with ease in their company ,as the virtues of the healthy mind and soul he strove for were the same. Dr. Severson describes this book as " a spiritual pilgrimage". It is indeed that, and more It is a book full of beauty, poetry, wisdom, passion, scholarship and soul. To read it is to let the mind and spirit open like a flower to receive much needed rain on what could have been a dry and academic subject. Dr. Severson brings the essence of Adler back to life, back to the authentic dance.I think it is a book Adler himself would have appreciated. I know Margot Adler, his granddaughter, author of Drawing Down the Moon, would have. It recovers something of the lost spirit of Adler the way his only surviving granddaughter recovered his lost ashes and restored them to an honored place. With this book, one can say Freud, Jung and Adler in the same breath again -- maybe even Adler, Freud and Jung.
