By Paul Szilard Rico Pfirstinger is one of the best technical writers that I have come across. I had already got his book on the Fujifilm X-PRO1, but I bought the X-T1 book as soon as it became available. It didn't disappoint! As there is significant overlap between the X-PRO1 and the X-T1 cameras, it is natural that, some material would be repeated, as the reader is not expected to have the previous book.I have been shooting with the X-T1 since it came out, and been "into" digital photography since 2000, having started photography in my early teens, yet I still found this book well worth buying for the significant unique content of the X-T1 and of course the description thereof.I read another review here saying that this book was verbose and full of fluff. I couldn't disagree more! I found it to be quite the opposite, with concise and technically accurate description of all features, with lots of practical recommendations, and not just a dry manual.I intend to re-read it again, and make side notes for my own use. Examples of great practical advice include why it is recommended that you shoot RAW+FINE, both from a Raw Only shooter's viewpoint and a JPEG Only shooter's viewpoint. Another excellent article explains the digital vs analog ISO settings that the camera uses, and how best to leverage these, especially with respect to HDR photography. In closing, I have no reservations in recommending this book to any photographer who wants to use the Fujifilm X-T1 to its fullest.

Critic This is a concise and very helpful addition to the owner's manual. It's a mix of good shooting advice and practical tips. The "Tips" format is very straightforward and logical to navigate. The tips are reasonably self contained, so you can skip around and focus on the topics that matter most for your own use.The author assumes a neutral position about the reader's prior knowledge, so the tips contain both good advice for new users, plus clear explanations of technical background where appropriate. Impressively, the author manages to provide enough background exposition about how some features work without becoming bogged down in excessive detail. This fits with the book's intent of being a set of pragmatic "tips" for using this camera. The book is very clearly and crisply written without excessive stylistic fluff, and without the author feeling the need to inject too much "personality". Consequently, it's an easy and quick read. Nevertheless, the author doesn't shy away from offering direct opinions about certain topics, which I found to be refreshing (and helpful). Some of the tips are task-based, which show you how to achieve a practical outcome by combining several of the camera settings. These are things which are often not immediately clear in the owner's manual. The coverage of which features affect RAW shooting and which affect JPEG shooting is very clearly covered, which is also not well articulated in the owner's manual. The sections on autofocus, metering, ISO, and dynamic range are especially excellent. The book covers the late 2014 3.00 firmware update. All in all an excellent read and well worth the purchase price.

If you are a novice, or trying to learn more about photography after a few years of shooting and now have a Fuji X-T1, this book can present a lot of good information (along with tips) in a very clear way. If you are an expert photographer, this book is not for you: an expert photographer can get all this information in slightly more succinct form dihectlyly from the X-T1 user manual. But if you are in the earlier groups, from novice to enthusiast, and have a new X-T1, this book can really give you a great presentation of the ins-and-outs of all types of shooting with this unusual camera, a camera that has caught the attention of many, many people, and has even caused quite a number of individuals who have previously shot with larger, heavier professional equipment to switch to the Fuji "X" line. The book is written in clear, direct prose, is visually well laid out, and is printed on fairly heavy weight semi-gloss paper. The book is also printed in full color, which is very nice and makes using the book more pleasurable. The book is not terribly long, some 175 pages or so, but it presents the information it needs to in sequential fashion. And, in contrast to Fuji's own users manual, it has an INDEX (yea!) -- honestly, as good as Fuji equipment is, and is REALLY is, who in their right mind would put together a users manual for a camera link the X-T1 without an index? (One can only scratch one's head.) At any rate, this is a great book for those that fall in the target audience, and there's a lot one can learn from it. I look it as a supplement, and possibly, a replacement, for the X-T1 users manual. Five Stars.
