About the Author

Jerrold Winter, PhD, is a professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. For nearly five decades, he has taught the principles of pharmacology, the elements of addiction, and the drug treatment of anxiety, depression, and psychosis to graduate and medical students. Research in his laboratory has centered on hallucinogens and other drugs of abuse, and he is the author of more than one hundred scientific publications.

He’s written two books for the general public: True Nutrition True Fitness, published in 1991, and the recently published Optimal Aging.

By George Salemi For those who have responded to the "message" of "get well" products we see advertised on TV, this book will offer you an in depth assessment of of the facts behind the hype! It strips bare how some products, think Dr. Oz here, are put before you as the cure all you have been looking for. If you appreciate straight forward honesty in searching out the facts, this is a book you should read. I personally have gained a new perspective on the use of vitamins, exercise, nutrition & a perspective on living to be 100!

A Must Read For Most of Us By Rosemary Dziak As a Ph.D. in a health related field I have a difficult time convincing my non-scientist husband that most of the claims for the secret to a long and healthy life are not based on good scientific evidence. I feel, however, that in this book, Dr. Winter has succeeded where I have often failed. Dr. Winter has been able in a wonderfully concise and scientifically sound way to make sense of a tremendous amount of information surrounding the pros and cons of drugs, vitamins, dietary supplements, diets, etc., that the mass media bombards us with on a daily basis. Just about every chapter in Dr. Winter’s book presents historical background to the focused topic helping the reader understand current thinking as well as critical evidence on what might be the best approach for preventing and managing conditions such cancer, heart conditions, osteoporosis. For example, it seems like everyone in America is being diagnosed with a need for vitamin D supplements today but Dr. Winter has written a very clear argument for caution in the way one might want to approach this highly controversial area of dietary supplements. This book is a must read for everyone who does not have the background or time to conduct the extensive research Dr. Winter has done on health topics that impact us all throughout our entire lifespan.

Refreshing combination of sound science and practical information By Dennis Moraski Dr. Winter's book is a refreshing combination of sound science and practical information. His well-researched and objective approach to the medications of aging, supplements and diet and exercise will be a valuable reference for us now and in the future as we live out our remaining years. He exposes the smoke and mirrors of the pharmaceutical industry and at the same time endorses the effective supplements and medications that will help us live healthier. I've recommended this book to many friends and found myself pulling it out to read excerpts when the conversation centers around health and aging. Although he may be targeting older adults by the title, it would be appropriate reading for those of any age.
