There is great spiritual thirst and hunger that only Christ can truly satisfy. Yet due to how Christianity is often conveyed or taught shallowly, its deep and rich truth is not perceived as it should and people are turned away from it and seek to satisfy their spiritual needs in either other traditional and new age religions, or purely secular pursuits. The purpose of this book is to teach about Christianity in its fullness, in the context of real life and real world issues and to explain common misconceptions. The common theme is how to live sacramentally and grow ever closer to God.

Sacramental Living: Understanding Christianity as a Way of Life, by Michael Haldas

From the Author Sacramental Living is a book that teaches about Christianity in the context of real life, real world issues and to explain common misconceptions. The common theme is how to live sacramentally and grow ever closer to God. It is written from an Eastern Orthodox Christian point of view. In most cases, that simply means a Christian point of view. In the Orthodox Church we have a certain way of worshipping, thinking and feeling about God, Christ and the Church. I have family who are Evangelical Protestants who have their way of worshipping God as do my family members and friends who are Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic. Even though I was baptized in the Orthodox Church when I was a baby, I spent four years in the Roman Catholic Church and ten years in the Evangelical Church before returning to Orthodoxy as an adult. These experiences were instrumental in preparing me for my commitment to Christ and His Church. All spiritually mature and committed believers in Christ have much more experiences and wisdom to share that are in common rather than opposed to each other. Though I chose to be Orthodox because I do believe this ancient faith contains the greatest means to grow in Christ, I value all thoughts, experiences and contributions from sincere followers of Christ who adhere to Christian orthodoxy. In this spirit, I use quotes throughout this book and others from all manner of Christians, Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant, to illustrate universal truths of Christianity. The more we understand about our own faith and others, the more we can appreciate what we have and what others may be able to teach us. I want this book to serve as a means of helping others see ways to build unity, not division, through understanding and appreciating differences. Jesus tells us in the Bible we need to have faith like little children. We should never lose our sense of awe and wonder of God and His glory and creation, or let anything  diminish it. My hope is this book enhances and further deepens your child like faith in God.

By Marilyn Rouvelas “Sacramental Living is a remarkable book that combines the profound theology of the Orthodox Church with guideposts to living the faith. It is a spiritual guide to the challenges we face each day when trying to be a Christian in our encounters with ourselves and God. I highly recommend it.When I first began reading about Orthodoxy after marrying a Greek Orthodox man in 1967, I was overwhelmed with the history, the rituals and the rules. Understanding it all seemed to be my limit; putting the Orthodox way into practice was daunting. Mt. Haldas's book would have been the most helpful because his writing is so accessible. For example, he gives the Church's definition of the seven sacraments, but also broadens it by saying, "To live sacramentally we must become somebody who seeks and finds God in all things at all times, in all places, in all company and in all ways." With humility, Mr. Haldas gives spiritual advice, emphasizing that a loving relationship with God is paramount. Self-esteem and a sense of worth are not derived from what others think, but "as we live sacramentally and grow deeper in our relationship with Christ and truly come to know His grace and love for us, we will gain a sense of self-acceptance and that derives from this love." As he beautifully states, "Our loving treatment of others in the spirit of community is a direct result of our relationship and experience with the Lord. Love is the essence of "true spirituality."Marilyn Rouvelas, author, A Greek Guide to Greek Traditions and Customs in America and co-author with Jeannette Aydlette: Peter Looks at Anger and Eleni Looks at Jealousy

By TK As a 23 year old Orthodox Christian in medical school, I realize that some of the largest challenges facing Christian youth are witnessing to the faith in a substantially post-Christian and secular society, and being able to articulate seemingly 'archaic' Christian practices to others. Why do we need to go to church? Why do we pray to a God we cannot see? Why can't you just be a good person without Christ?Haldas masterfully synthesizes a plethora of Holy Scripture, writings of the Church Fathers, and that of modern spiritual masters (of all Christian backgrounds) to shed light on these and many many other questions of paramount importance to a Christian person in contemporary society. When I sometimes feel daunted by the amount of spiritual literature available, I am thankful that Haldas took the time to read through it and write this book which I often use as a reference for myself. His writing is concise, accessible, yet intellectual and thought-provoking. Most importantly, he keeps his writing personal, relating his wealth of spiritual knowledge to his own experiences, struggles, growth, and answers he has found in his faith journey, thus challenging the reader to apply the information in a meaningful way to his/her life as well. Having finished Sacramental Living, I return to medical school this year with a refreshed and humbled sense of what it means to be a witness to Christ in everyday life, and what it means to have an honest and real relationship with Him.

The central theme of the book, one might say, is that following Christ cannot just be a thought process, but rather must be a living process, and it is hard work. Sacramental Living is extremely thoughtful in its organization, learned in its use of sources, and well written. The author's humane style of reasoning makes it a page turner, too; I read the book in two sittings. If you are looking for a book to give to a thoughtful person who is struggling to understand how trying to live life as a Christian could possibly make sense, I suggest that you try giving them this book.
