In the small town of Brookwood, Iowa, forty-one-year-old food columnist Helen Munson, unappreciated by her two teenagers and her lazy husband, longs for more out of life, but hasn’t a clue how to make that happen. In fact, her tendency to overreact and put herself in embarrassing situations sabotages her own efforts to assert herself. Helen impulsively starts writing a spy novel whose main character exudes traits Helen tries to embody in her own life: power, assertiveness, and the ability to kick butt. However, this persona doesn’t quite manage to keep her out of trouble, or jail. With help from a cast of quirky characters, such as her hippie best friend, a free-spirited drifter, and a pair of fashionable gay store owners, Helen just might be able to pull of the transformation of a lifetime.

Review "April Moore has struck a chord of domesticated genius in this story of Helen who learns through a mix of choice and happenstance that there is more to life than what she has elected to endure." "April J. Moore's book "Bobbing For Watermelons" isn't your typical women's fiction: it's not predictable or formulaic; the characters have honest strengths and flaws (both of which are often hilarious), and there's no ridiculously easy answers to the major complications in the story. Instead we see a typical "middle-America" woman struggling through the angst and stresses of middle age and, ultimately, coming to a place of life, love and creativity once more. While that sounds serious, this great character and plot development is couched in Helen's hilarious misadventures. Heartwarming, quirky, and unexpected."

About the Author April J. Moore grew up writing and drawing and continues on both paths, providing illustrations for cards, journals, and books. A love of history, resulted in her first book, Folsom’s 93: The Lives and Crimes of Folsom Prison’s Executed Men (Linden Publishing, 2013) and her love of humor and quirky characters, encouraged to write Bobbing for Watermelons. When not writing or illustrating, April is usually enjoying the Colorado sunshine by working in her vegetable garden, kayaking, or hiking, and spends the cold, wintry months curled up with a good book and a mug of tea. Her favorite activities, however, is spending time with her husband, sixteen-year-old son, and ninety-five-pound lap dog.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. fun, and with a finely tuned and sharpened wit By Dean K Miller In this witty and cleverly written novel, April J. Moore scribes the rolling, sometimes coming of age story of Helen Munson, wife, mother, recipe columnist as she learns to live life after the passing of her husband. Raising teenagers, dealing with a sometimes-less-than-pleasant mother-in-law, and breaking out of her shell, Helen starts her revolution by teaching the local supermarket brat-kid a lesson or two. From there on out it's a non-stop roller coaster of emotional twists and turns, each one nudging Helen closer to the woman she knows is her destiny. Quirky, fun, and with a finely tuned and sharpened wit, Helen makes the grade, thanks to Ms. Moore's fine skills of story telling.

By First Reader101 April Moore has struck a chord of domesticated genius in this story of Helen who learns through a mix of choice and happenstance that there is more to life than what she has elected to endure. Wearing the roles of an under-appreciated mother and wife, Helen's spirited character breaks out to meet the world and risks everything to find and become her truest self. Endearingly funny and poignantly tragic Helen's walk through life is in every way a story that is authentically human.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. like the rest of the book By Jennifer Joy Carter The main character in this novel is unlike any other I've read and, like the rest of the book, she offers a refreshing and original look at the strong lead woman. We meet her right about when she starts to figure out that there might be more to life than the crumbs left for her after taking care of her family, but the directions the story takes are surprising and humorously unsentimental, which is one of the things I love most about the story. It's worth it just to hear the things that come out of the character's mouth, but the story will keep you engaged too. There were times I was laughing so hard I wheezed, also a plus! This is one of those books you won't want to put down until you get through the whole thing, and you'll be glad you know Helen when you're finished.
