They said Cuthbert would never make Act II, but ... Last time around, Cuthbert was up against thieves infiltrating the Valley, planning to steal William Shakespeare's first - and, well, worst - works. This time it is the forces of global exploitation and Big Business who have decided to march into lush pastures and by-waters nobody knew existed, even their inhabitants, and turn them into an out-of-town shopping centre and cinema multiplex. Yes, folks, it is Cuthbert - one-time farmer, theatre impressario, and many-times undertaker - against the World, and somebody or something is going to get buried, under concrete or otherwise. The Valley is under threat. Will the Valley rise again and become a mountain, or will the locals take it all sitting down, eat popcorn, and watch 'Die Messy 4'? Book #2 in the Cuthbert Series

McCullough Readers of Patrick Barrett's first book Shakespeare's Cuthbert must have thought they'd never read anything funnier. But Mr. Barrett has done it again and has his readers laughing out loud even more.Percy the gardener is woken up by the bulldozers. What's going on? Why, the site of the former Hall, now burnt down, has been bought by a chain of supermarkets - and poor Percy finds that the shed where he lives is in line to be demolished as the site is prepared for building. Luckily he can move in with his good friend Cuthbert. But Cuthbert is due to receive an even bigger shock than Percy. For the owner of the supermarket turns out to be a beautiful red haired lady in a mobile scooter who just happens to be Cuthbert's aunt Liza! The obvious portrait of Paula Barrett, Patrick's wife, is amusing and delightful. But that's only one of the jokes in store. This book is not only full of one-liners, but also has a very funny plot. The action as well as the words keeps us in a continual state of amusement. The characters are funny, realistic in spite of the way they behave, and a real pleasure to be with. This is a book which you won't want to put down until you've finished it.Warmly recommended.

Douglas Adams and then some By barbara silkstone With the rhythm and patter of Douglas Adams, Patrick Barrett strikes again in the persona of Cuthbert. What can one say about the lovable, sharply satirical, and oh-so-droll, Cuthbert's world? Much more subtle than Monty Python, more clever Arthur Dent... I laughed until I cried. The portrait of Paula Barrett, Patrick's wife, is a delight. She must share his demented, very clever humor... thank goodness! There are times I found myself re-reading and savoring lines for the pure fun of the quirky twists."These women, he thought, once they fell for you, they could beguile you in an instant."They don't get any funnier than Patrick Barrett. Highly recommended.

Light-hearted and compassionate By Sunset44 As in the first of the Cuthbert series, the endearingly portrayed Percy and Cuthbert never failed to engage. The description is very individual to the author, refreshing to read. I particularly liked it when"Percy collapsed on his knees, panting like a ruptured steam boiler".And yet, despite the light side of the characters, there is always the presence of an underlying compassion between them, warts 'n all. In places I thought Percy comical but he can be hurt, he can sulk, like a human, and Cuthbert understands. The character's belief that William Shakespeare had "...worked at Mandrake Hall as a teacher" both tickled me and whetted my appetite to see how the rest of the storyline would unfold.
