Julia, CFO for a balloon company in Boston, blows to bits one day while drinking her morning coffee, her big toe landing on a co-worker's desk. Detectives John Silver and D.J. are baffled. Was it spontaneous human combustion – or murder? Silver's daughter Emily, an aspiring actor, becomes part of a wild chase involving a stolen Winnebago, an ex-boyfriend with a penchant for mime, and a dentist with some rather alarming fantasies about Emily and his pet iguana.

The premise of someone exploding seemingly spontaneously is an apparent takeoff on spontaneous combustion. One of the oddball happenings include an orange woman’s shoe, a plunger, and a toilet tank that get thrown at the investigating detectives who are trying to solve the case. Another is various descriptive references to farm animals when the author describes siren and vehicular noises. The novel has two themes running concurrently: One is the mystery itself and the other is sexual frustration. The main character, Detective John Silver, has suffered impotency after shooting a pet turtle’s head off and traumatizing a little kid. Hence he thinks his lust for Andrea, one of the people he’s investigating is lost. His partner, DJ, has a thing for Silver’s daughter whom he met when she was 15. One of them gets to satisfy his longing. There is a scene with Emily, Silver’s daughter, and DJ when they are at a theater summer camp that is sweet and emotionally intimate as they connect on a human level. There also is some father-daughter tenderness that comes up a few times. One wishes for a few more of these. The novel reads like a converted movie script. A number of car chases and car crashes and near-crashes, gunplay, and references to oversized female anatomy all figure into the story. The traditional wrap-up of how Julia exploded could have been more satisfying. It would have been fun to read a more detailed pseudo-scientific (and albeit implausible) solution to the mystery.

We're having a rare beautiful Spring day in greater Boston By DavidM We're having a rare beautiful Spring day in greater Boston, a great day for a bike ride, and I have instead spent it reading and howling at this funny, wacky book. It has been years since I have finished reading a work of fiction, but this one consumed me until I consumed it. I think it is fair to say the story is told in a bold, occasionally surrealistic style, with an unusual insight into love and lust at various stages of human life. It is punctuated by hilarious funny bits.

I especially loved the silly wordplay such as the Abbott & Costell routine with the town of Ware. Adding to the crazy antics was the mystery of what happened to Julia. This book definitely held my interest and I would highly recommend it. Pam Herstein
