About the Author For the past decade, Edmond Lau has worked as a software engineer in some of the top technology companies in Silicon Valley, including Google, Ooyala, Quora, and Quip. He's passionate about building great engineering teams, and he's interviewed over 500+ engineering candidates throughout his career as well as spoken to teams across the country on how to build great engineering cultures. At Quora, he built out the onboarding and mentoring programs used to train dozens of new engineering hires. His engineering and career advice has been featured on Forbes, Time, Slate, Inc., and Fortune. He's also guest lectured at both MIT and Stanford on software design. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science from MIT.

Reading this book is a highly leveraged use of your time By Alex I'm always skeptical of books that profess to teach a meta-skill ("be a better engineer") since they can easily come off as too theoretical - and of course I've both already read a great deal about software engineering and led and shipped many projects, so what more is there to learn? After reading through The Effective Engineer, I was impressed with both the thoroughness of its coverage of topics I was familiar with but more importantly with the way it tied everything I'd read and experienced into a unified whole. I also immediately put into use some of the insights around increasing iteration speed and optimizing for leverage in my day-to-day practices and applied the lessons on optimizing for learning when giving advice to colleagues and team members. I'd recommend this book to any engineer who's either just starting their career, looking to rapidly improve their skills or planning to mentor other engineers. I'm already planning to tell everyone on my team to read it as soon as it comes out and suggest we give a copy to every new engineer who joins Dropbox.

By Philip Guo I am a computer science professor who leads a research group consisting of both undergraduate and graduate students. During the course of reading your book, I was inspired to write up an informal "best practices handbook" for my own students. Your book inspired me to run my research group in a more structured way like a good engineering org. Some professors are quite ad-hoc in how they run their labs, and as a consequence, students sometimes don't get onboarded well and struggle to maintain motivation throughout the ups and downs of the research process. In particular, I was inspired by your book's sections on onboarding and investing in your team's longer-term growth.

Peng I'd always thought that good engineers were born of long, hard experience, so I didn't think a book could teach me how to be more effective. But in fact, Edmond Lau managed to distill his decade of engineering experience into crystal-clear best practices. The Effective Engineer makes recommendations that can be readily applied to any engineering team. I would highly recommend The Effective Engineer for engineers and their managers. There is a world of difference between a great engineering team and good engineering team, and this book will help you bridge that gap.As I read the Effective Engineer, I thought about the teams I've worked with in the past. Some of them were amazing, and others were terrible... why does that happen? The Effective Engineer gave me an opportunity to reflect, and it gave me a framework to think about what kinds of factors make teams successful. The specific recommendations are clear and insightful, but perhaps even more important is Edmond Lau's process. It's easy for engineers to get buried in the daily slog of pushing projects forward. Edmond reminds us that every so often, we need to take a step back to think about what we've done and how we can do better.
