Good stories with little practical advice By I Teach Typing This book is a great collection of case stories demonstrating where collecting lots of data has helped industries, coupled with a futurist fantasy of how collecting and using lots of data could help solve lots of problems. The real life use cases are fascinating and the domains covered are respectably broad (everything from life on the farm, to medicine, finance, energy and many other domains are covered). In each area the authors cover history (sometimes predating electricity), through the state of the art and then make statements/forecasts for how the careful use of data can improve the world. The examples covering companies doing real things with huge amounts of data are excellent. However, the futurist predictions, which vacillate between provocative and vacuous, are more annoying than useful. The thoughts on the area that I know well, medicine and big data, where the authors point out the need for revolutionary change in diagnosis and treatment, echo the most forward thinkers in academic medicine but the reader of this book is left thinking that this is a tractable problem not the quagmire that exists. While there are a lot of good ideas here, fundamental advice on how to compile the right data is largely missing. For the techies, there are inspirational stories but no algorithms or discussion to help you accomplish your tasks. For the people who think big data is just a marketing phrase, this book offers a lot of proof that companies can do great (new) things with huge amounts of data. Unfortunately, the reader of this book will not have real guidelines to help collect and use the right data (be it big or not big).

I know Rob from my IBM days so I was eager to review the book. Big Data can often be over-hyped. Rob and Patrick utilize a series of stories to make Big Data tangible. They discuss how farmers can use Big Data, why doctors will have math degrees and whether actuaries will become data scientists. They also offer a Big Data Reference Architecture including business and logical views. The book is a great business-oriented overview for anyone who is looking to understand Big Data use cases. Well done Rob and Patrick!

Interesting, but Not Actionable Read On Big Data By Big Data Paramedic First and foremost, the book is commendable with nice stories that make it a compelling read. Every chapter starts with a historical perspective of the industry ( farming), what are the criteria required for success ( example:For Insurance predicting cashflows, Demographics etc) , some short story and then the chapter ends, moves to the next section. For most of us, this book will just expose you to more case studies that are everywhere. My suggestions are follows:LEARNING BIG DATA AND DATA SCIENCE: If you want to learn the nuts and bolts of Big Data and Data Science(Information technology Twins), a good start would be Coursera dot org ($50 - $500). An expensive course in Harvard($8000) if you can afford it. But you do not need a car mechanic to enjoy Driving.
