Serendipitous encounter By Tangea Tansley At one rather muddy stage of my life I read a lot of self-help books, some of which were game-changers or -- perhaps more accurately -- life-savers. And then lots of life's jigsaw slotted into some sort of order and I carried on. So it was interesting that Happy 95% of the Time crossed my path when it did. Serendipity? A miracle? Certainly it's a timely reminder about getting too complacent, about taking the time to do the work and grapple with the questions that Dr Staples raises. This is a beautifully written, meticulously referenced book. I bought the digital version, but I'm going back to purchase the print for use as a work book.

A Significant Contribution By Allan Romkema The title of this book reminds me of that curious inclusion of the phrase, “The Pursuit of Happiness” in the Declaration of Independence. Interesting that its author, Thomas Jefferson, felt the need to include this right to pursue Happiness at the same level as the right to Life and Liberty. He and the other signers obviously recognized the importance of happiness to the citizens of the new world. They also sensed perhaps the elusiveness of happiness by insisting that the pursuit of it should be enshrined in the Declaration. The document was signed in July 1776.That was then, this is now.Now Walter Doyle Staples promises the reader of “Happy 95% Of The Time” three simple, proven ways to overcome depression and feel content almost all the time. Could these three ways possibly help in our pursuit of this elusive quality of life? What I like about this book, really like, is its accessibility to complex ideas. Dr. Staples has an uncanny skill to make difficult concepts readily available to the layperson. His discussion of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation and Practical Spirituality in clear language makes this book a treasure. Too often self-help literature resorts to jargon and confuses rather than enlightens the reader. In the first few pages of the book, Dr. Staples defines authentic happiness as: “ a radically different and generally misunderstood kind because of its unique nature.” That nature is “predictable, permanent, resplendent and indestructible. Did Thomas Jefferson have that in mind when he wrote his first draft of the Declaration Of Independence? I don’t know.I do know that happiness and its pursuit is not just a right, but a human need. Dr. Staples’ book makes a significant contribution to directing the reader to the source that paradoxically is its beginning and its end.Allan Romkema
