Once upon a time, there was a princess who felt like a dog…I mean a real mutt.

Mable Barker, a frizzy-haired mongrel from Queens with no real life direction, is never going to snag a man like Jason Mead, a purebred Upper East Side veterinarian. Or so she thinks. Even in her daydreams, the infatuated-with-fairy-tales Mable imagines herself as a princess with a crooked tiara and a whole orchard of poison apples. Then again, Jason isn’t exactly traditional prince material himself. The shy but adorable Dr. Mead’s awkward ways around women have him substituting the search for his lifelong human companion with playing canine matchmaker—breeding blue ribbon champions.Jason’s first breeding attempt yields Innis, Fifth Avenue’s snarliest Pekingese. A dog whose temperament, it appears, will never fit show-dog standards…until he meets Mable, whom Jason hires as a dog walker.Could Mable actually have what it takes to handle Innis and Jason? Can three imperfect beings ever come together to create utter perfection at the Westminster Dog Show—and beyond? Will Mable and Jason ever trust their feelings, allow love to be unleashed? Will Mable ever see herself as a princess capable of riding off into the sunset?Fifth Avenue Fidos offers a deceptively simple tale that is both a sweet romantic comedy and a satirical look at modern relationships. A smart exploration of the fairy tale promise of a one-size-fits-all happily ever after—and a heartwarming story of love and dreams in dog-eat-dog NYC.

Always upbeat, Mable has had a string of failed employment and a failed romance that leave her ready to throw in the towel.Jason Mead's family raise Pekinese show dogs. Jason is a veterinarian with dreams of raising his own Pekinese show dogs apart from his parents. Unfortunately the dog that he thought would be his ticket to stardom has a mind of his own. Innis is a misbehaved puppy, but there is something about him that Jason adores. Of course nobody else sees Innis's potential, until Mable Barker comes along. With words of advice from a hot dog vendor to "find her calling" Mable snatches up one more job as a dog walker. When she meets Innis it is love at first sight, for both dog and human. Mable manages to find her calling and find romance through one disobedient Pekinese show dog.My Thoughts:I really enjoyed Fifth Avenue Fidos. The humor throughout the story sometimes had me rolling with laughter. Mable tends to use humor to cover up her insecurities, but then her life kind of lends itself to humor. With 4 brothers(all named after the Beatles, unintentionally of course), bent on protecting their sister in the big bad city, of course there are going to be some wonderful comedic scenes. The romance was sweet but I have to mention there is one sex scene. While the scene did provide some comedic entertainment to the story I could have done without it and it bumps this from a cute story that anyone could read to a more adult audience. That being said, I found the story entertaining and the characters engaging. Actually Fifth Avenue Fidos could be considered two stories for the price of one. Along with Mable's story is a parallel fairy tale that breaks out now and then throughout the book. It too is a sweet story with a lesson learned, but I found it sometimes interrupted the flow of the main story. Kind of like a commercial cutting in right at "the good part" of a movie. At the end of the book there is a Q & A between Mable and the author that explains the reason for the parallel story. As for the Happily Ever After ending that all fairy tales are known for, I was quite happy with how everything turned out in both stories.

By Candace Robinson Fifth Avenue Fidos: A Modern-Day Fairy Tale with “Bite” is an adorable story about two quirky, slightly awkward characters that come together in NYC.First- I really loved the characters! I loved Mable’s humor that lightened most situations. I also liked that she had some growth in the book, going from a low self esteem to feeling confident and happy. I loved that Jason is an animal lover and is a bit awkward. The two of them fit together perfect. I also loved all the secondary characters (or hated those that were meant to be disliked). All the characters were really well done and so easy for me to connect with. The romance is very slow but that allows for some good character development and growth. I liked those little moments of connection, even if things didn’t go anywhere for quite a long time.I also loved the animals and how important they are to the story. I’m a dog person and had a Pekingese not long ago so I was reminded of her and her total Peke personality. The issues I had was the book felt really long and the pacing felt off to me. Sometimes I couldn’t put it down and other times I just got a little bored with it. I had to take breaks and read other books. This was kind of a big negative to me, but I feel like it’s still SO worth reading because the characters and overall story are REALLY good.

With four brothers, three of whom are cops like her dad, and another who is a rising TV personality, it's really difficult to feel like an individual. When the story opens at church with Mable having been handcuffed to an expired parking meter by her eight year old nephew, just as the guy she's had a crush on for years shows up with his sleek, slender college girlfriend, that's her wake up moment. Mable's soon off to share a rent controlled Manhattan apartment and find not only herself, but her independence. Several months and 14 failed jobs later, things aren't looking so good. When she's hired as a dog walker by shy, awkward and wealthy veterinarian Jason Mead, the fairy tales she's been imagining for years start to have some substance. Mind you, it's far from a smooth ride and involves major misunderstandings, a dognapper and an interesting cast of characters, most of whom are quirky, memorable and extremely likable, but we all know that getting there is half the fun and I wanted Mable and Jason to get 'there' big time. This is funny, an easy read and has two main characters who you really care about and can root for.
