Twenty-four-year-old Samuel Dobson has had zero luck selling coffins door-to-door, so he might as well move on to vacuums. Paul Defranco, the head of Samson Vacuum Corporation’s Scranton office, doesn’t care that Samuel is awkward and clumsy. He hires him anyway, and soon Samuel is slinging vacuums with the best of them. Or at least trying.

Samuel soon finds himself in Samson Vacuum’s corporate culture that involves cult-like motivational mantras, and he is trained in despicable and manipulative sales techniques. His new colleagues are a colorful—and possibly crazy—bunch. He befriends Tazz, a successful salesman whose jokester high jinks hide a dark side, while Paul heads to Phoenix to visit with sleazebag salesman Donnie Ficarra and manic office manager Mindy Yamamoto. Paul’s job is at stake, and both Paul’s alcoholic wife and Samuel’s domineering ex-girlfriend are plotting revenge on the men who supposedly did them wrong.

Tensions will come to a head over a dishonest new salesman, stolen merchandise, and some casual insurance fraud. Samuel never knew the vacuum trade could be so lucrative—or dysfunctional. Sometimes, clean is dirty business.

Actually, although this book's premise involves door to door vacuum cleaner sales, upon reading the first few pages one quickly realizes that it is much more than that, this is a brilliant and hysterically funny glimpse at humanity. Humanity at it's best, worst, lowest and most scummiest and I loved every second of it!! From the moment I started reading this book, I could not put it down. I could not wait to see what happens next! Why? The book is real - one can relate to every single character - every single person sounds like someone you know - yeah "that guy" - the guy you used to work with, or your buddy or so and so's cousin - catch my drift? And this is where I draw my comparisons to Office Space as the author (much like Mike Judge) has the uncanny ability to capture the reality of the most complex yet habitual animals on Earth in a way that will have tears rolling down your cheeks with laughter. It's very hard for me not to cite the many hysterical moments this book has, but I shall contain myself as I would want the readers to freshly savor these moments. I will say that there is a hilariously crazy road trip that had me laughing out loud! I can actually see this as a movie or HBO series - it's that good - many places to go with this material and it never gets old - again because it's real and one as a reader and person can relate. Fans of Office Space, great humor and intelligent satire (Mel Brooks) will gobble this baby up and be left wanting for more - I know I did! Hell if you're a human you will love this book - do yourself a favor and grab it - you'll be glad you did!

By Tony Harlan Although Jason Hagen's book "Dirtbags" is about vacuum cleaner salesmen it does not suck. Quite the contrary, this masterpiece of humor and human nature is compelling right from the start, it draws you in and keeps you there throughout. What are these guys going to do next?! I found it very difficult to put this book down until I finished it... and now I'm reading it again! The characters are so well developed and true-to-life, these are people that you know! Hagen is right on the mark with their mannerisms and idiosyncrasies, their quirkiness and flaws, and most importantly, their humanity. This is how it is in the sales world, and you have to be a certain type of person to survive in it. From his years on the frontlines of this type of work Hagen is able to capture the reality of the life of a door-to-door salesperson with truth, humor, and finesse. And besides being a great story this book is also full of sales advice, motivational quips, and usable techniques and tactics... as well as a lot of "what not to do"! This should be a must-read in every sales office!!

Jason Hagen takes a world that I never once thought about--door-to-door vacuum cleaner sales--and fully explores it, giving the reader a fresh look at office politics, the psychology of selling, relationships, and life in America. Dirtbags entertains and educates--it's funny, captivating, fast paced, and it all rings true. I expect to see Dirtbags turned into a movie or TV series--it's the complete package of high quality entertainment--strong characters and great story telling. Read it!
