Broken hearts, shattered souls, abandoned ideals, and inescapable fates are just a few of the themes Tad Simons plumbs in The Bleeder, a collection of tragi-comic tales in the tradition of Robertson Davies, T.C. Boyle, and—when the mood is particularly dark and funny—Roald Dahl. A boy who falls in love with the school nurse but can’t understand her shameful secret. A young couple whose relationship is suddenly redefined by a gruesome traffic accident. An office worker who finds himself trapped in a terrifying nightmare of 21st-century capitalism. Their spirits tested by a flawed and often pitiless world, none of these characters survives unscathed. Some don’t survive at all. In these pages you’ll also find several misfits, bullies, and charlatans whose solutions to life’s problems are as misguided as they are hilarious. Simons has a knack for filtering the American experience through a clarifying lens of skepticism and compassion. Balancing tragedy and humor with a sly sense of satire, these wonderfully engrossing tales are not just short stories, they are “armchair entertainment” of the highest order. .

Smart, Funny, Shocking Stories By Patrick Coyle, Minneapolis, MN In “The Bleeder,” Tad Simons shines his satirical flashlight into nooks and crannies of contemporary society you’ll recognize, places you have been before and may not have ever wanted to revisit, but by all means do so via these nine stories. His characters are mostly angry, put upon, deeply flawed, misunderstood and really human (except for a few who are not human). They react to things we are all up against every day and want the essential things we all want: personal and professional fulfillment, a basic understanding of how systems in society work and what our place is in them. The stories are very well-written and feature shocking twists and turns you will not see coming, many with surprise, poignant endings that will make you go “oh wow.” But mainly, they are funny--Kurt Vonnegut funny--tinged with an Orwellian anxiety that it might all actually be completely out of our control, how else to explain the absurdity. My favorites are “Exit 43,” “The Vision,” “Air Diablo” and “The Bleeder.” I look forward to what’s next from Simons!

By Mary Martinez Has author Tad Simons (The Bleeder, Pembroke Press, 2015) sent a copy of his book of short stories to Pope Francis yet? Well he ought to, because, apart from the religion part and the being Pope part, these two have a lot in common. Where to start? With morality, of course. For a funny, very funny, very very funny, book, The Bleeder is all about morality. Never mind that the protagonist might be on the side of the devil (there are no angels here, save one twenty-something Kim in the splendid Exit 43), Simons' universe is profoundly moral. Simons and the Pope share an aversion to market capitalism and Simons' stories do one better than preaching about it, they drag us through the psychic mess that capitalism has made of modern man.The Vision gives the reader a compelling and, alas, all-too-recognizable view of a white collar worker pushed to the brink in a downsizing company, but just as we are ready to despair for our Ozymandias of the keyboard, Simons pulls out a finale that leaves us chuckling, darkly, darkly.Another pencil-pusher, Arnold in the story Some Kind of Animal, seems to hail from the lineage of Walter Mitty, but Simons knows that our dreams in the twenty first century generally involve anonymous mayhem (as in guns and s***) rather than admirable heroics. While skewering, and I use the word advisedly, his characters, Simons maintains a framework of moral rectitude, however twisted the beams may appear. Humaninanotarianism, one of the strangest and strongest of the stories, presents the arguments of veganism in a surprisingly sympathetic light, even as we understand that they are bound to wither on the vine.Nasty neighbors, we've all had 'em, but not as magnificently as Simons makes 'em in The Great Sparrow War, and while you may think you were assigned the seat-mate from hell on your last low-cost flight, just page over to Air Diablo and breathe a (constricted) sigh of relief. Discover on your own time the devilish horrors of Walk of Fire. I want to revel, for my last words, in the title story.Ah, The Bleeder, the poor little bleeder. If you have ever been nine, if you have ever gone to grade school, if you have ever hated your sadistic principal...you see where I am going. Simons could open a new franchise "Nine-year-olds-R-us" and we would force our way through the thronged doors. He has gotten right to the heart of his diminutive innamorato (directly through his capillaries) and we are with him all the way, well, almost all the way. It's a moral universe, all right. Maybe not the fart jokes, but I know that's a male thing, and I am, after all, just a Mom. (Note to self, re-read Mother's Day.) (Second note to self, xerox Mother's Day and put up on walls of living room.)Ms. Martinez is a poet and writer who has spent her share of time smelling the farts of small children and loving them just the same.

A Page-Turner That Locks You In Until The End By 4kids From the moment I started reading the first story I knew I would have to clear my calendar until the back cover closed. Tad Simons use of vivid imagery and descriptive language places you within the book and you won't want to leave the stories he creates. Hard to imagine what goes on in the author's mind to think of such strange and engaging stories. Funny, poignant, masterful.
