Unfortunately, this production has flaws that prompted me to give up three quarters into it. Firstly, such a heavily abridged version should have concentrated on the main story, i.e. the adventures of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza, rather than get bogged in the many secondary stories. For instance, it contains too much of the soap-opera-like story of Don Fernando and Luscinda, while the episode where Don Quijote frees the convicts is only hinted at. In many places there are such gaps in the telling of these digressive secondary tales that you get lost. Replacing ancient word forms ("formosura") by their modern equivalents ("hermosura") was a good idea but why not do so throughout instead of only in the beginning? In fact there is a drop in quality towards the end and the undisputed talent of the speakers was wasted when they kept reading out sentences in an intonation out of step with their meaning ; or when they rendered whole sentences unintelligible by missing words (verbs, prepositions etc.). Had the speakers got bored with their job in the end? Were they running out of time or out of budget?

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Amazing! By S. Vargas I bought this book for my middle school native and advanced Spanish speakers. This is one of my favorite books and it is definitely written at a middle school level. There are some words that are annotated, per chapter, and it helps students understand what they're reading. It also helps to teach the preterite vs. imperfect.

By Liza Bought this book as a favor for someone else but after I got it didn't want to give it to the person (it was a gift for her stepson). I really love books and this one has the right amount of written of lines and pictures for introducing kids into the wonderful worl of reading. Great value for the price.

Systems Analysis and Design: An Object-Oriented Approach with UML, 5th Edition by Dennis, Wixom, and Tegarden captures the dynamic aspects of the field by keeping students focused on doing SAD while presenting the core set of skills that every systems analyst needs to know today and in the future. The text enables students to do SAD—not just read about it, but understand the issues so they can actually analyze and design systems. The text introduces each major technique, explains what it is, explains how to do it, presents an example, and provides opportunities for students to practice before they do it for real in a project. After reading each chapter, the student will be able to perform that step in the system development process.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Award Winning Online Content, but what about the previous editions? By Let's Compare Options Preptorial Given the expense of updated editions, I always recommend previous editions, especially for self study, or if your prof understands budgets, or if the new edition is just a rip off to charge you more without a lot of new content. In this case, there are several caveats about getting the older edition. First, this edition adds a LOT of new developments from the "real world" like apps and mobile computing, and even gaming! If you know the earlier editions this might seem weird, since the text is a classic in exploring real world big business applications, especially how project finances tie to validation and design, especially real world budget trade offs.More importantly, this text is an award winner for online content. The text's extras, healthcare superstore evolutionary living example and student example sites are hundreds of pages-- a second textbook in themselves! Yes, you can get an earlier edition then surf the new online content (given in Amazon/Wiley's generous look see for this text, unusual and welcomed for this new an edition), but if a grade depends on it, this new one is a must due to the integration of chapters with online extras. That said, if this is for self study, or in my case I use it to teach online courses that are not graded, then do consider that combination to be kind to your budget. The main reason this book is used by so many SAD (Systems Analysis and Design) courses is that it is NOT ivory tower intended to teach a bunch of UML you'll never use-- it is filled with complex, detailed examples of successes and failures that you'll encounter in any job interview in the field, let alone real world job. The examples include not just UML tabs for transportable code or systems, but numerous financial spreadsheets illustrating how you'll have to justify budgets. It also doesn't just include design, but a LOT of validation, verification, testing, etc. that are the day to day activity of real SAD practice, not just theory. In short, this text is a must if you're in, teaching, or going into Systems Engineering, and whether you buy this new or in previous editions plus use online will depend on your objectives and motivation (ie, self study, vs. required for a class as two of the extremes, with online/Coursera types somewhere in the middle. This is a NONTRIVIAL decision since the new edition is nearly 200 bucks at this writing and the 2.0 UML text is a penny in good used or $5 in new on the Amazon marketplace. IMHO buying the previous and then using the online resources from the new is a great way to learn this material, but not if you're in it for a formal class or grade. Frankly, the high price probably supports the stellar online stuff in the new edition, but since it's not PP, you have to decide if it's a combination you want, given your objectives). In either case, highly recommended. If you're teaching SAD, I've evaluated over a dozen other texts, and this is exponentially better from a real world modeling/examples frame.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good book By Amazon Customer With details on UML and helps a lot when learning SAD. Easy to understand.

No ordinary memoir, this book aspires to be more than a mere exercise in narcissism. A street person in a zany California beach town at the end of the author's days provides the theme: planet Earth is the ‘Galaxy Lunatic Training Asylum’ upon which each of us has been planted with one purpose, namely to rise from the stupidity and the darkness around us into the light, to regain in fact our sanity. Mama Earth is really tired of it all, the Lady opines, and recommends a journey inward. Taking a literary look back at his life, he sees she was right. In a series of poignant vignettes, it becomes clear that he and the whole country have been progressively descending into hopeless lunacy. Ah but there’s more; there's an agend here. It seems it’s all been a macho ego trip---the whole of human history in fact---an unfortunate male mistake, a mere prelude to the new paradigm, the return of the goddess---meaning the spiritual androgyny that Jesus talks about in the Gospel of Thomas. We need to restore the balance between male and female. In a hilarious final chapter set in the aforementioned California city, it all comes together: Mama Earth, the Goddess Sophia and the Cosmic Lady, who is vindicated in an eschatological grand finale. She was right all along.

The Cosmic Lady Was Right: An American Journey, by Marshall Motz

About the Author The author, a vanishing breed, describes himself as poet-at-large. An erstwhile Evangelical, his special concern is to present a joyous alternate world view for beleaguered fundamentalists. His life has spanned the epochal gap between FDR and Obama; in Akron's Firestone Park it all began: there he knew Alan Freed, saw the birth of rock and roll, the first glimmerings of the megachurch movement. He holds degrees in literature, philosophy and theology from such institutions as the University of California and Fuller Theological Seminary. He lives at Arbor Cove in Santa Cruz, by a lazy lagoon, hard by a sewage plant.

Pali I stumbled upon The Cosmic Lady was Right and was initially put-off by the psychobabble: Cosmic Loony Bin, Repugnuts and Dummocrats, Sophianic kingdom, Santa (Sanity) Cruz. My first impression was quickly replaced by a fascination about the author. Born in the mid-west during the Great Depression and a former Presbyterian minister, Motz moves to Santa Cruz, CA in the 1970's to pursue a doctorate in the history of consciousness at UCSC and never leaves his Magical Kingdom. Motz reflects on phases of his life as a fundamentalist, an evangelical, a born-again Christian, an atheist, and a Sophianic Christian. This self-proclaimed life-long learner details in a humorous, self-depicting, and easy to read style his personal journey in search of THE TRUTH. In the process he tackles American culture and Christianity head on and provides a message for the 21st century. The book will appeal to people for whom "The medium is NOT the message" and those who although caught up in a 24/7 lifestyle still on occasion dream the impossible dream. Much like Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motor Cycle Maintenance, the Cosmic Lady resonates on many levels and deserves a second reading!

I have to start by saying that Trevor is a friend of mine from college, so this may be slightly biased, but his writing is phenomenal. As soon as I began to read drinking song I could not stop. The manner in which he describes minute details such as colors and chugging beers/shots is exceptional. I am going to purchase his other story and any subsequent stories after that. It then dives into PAAS, IAAS, and Identity and Access Management for developers. I like the explanations and the simple 'this is how to do it' procedures. I bought the book for information on how to secure dashboards, cache, and service bus. As a bonus the information on identity and access management is proving to be very helpful. This is a 'how to' book, not a deep dive on theory and features.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Straight Forward approach By joedive This book starts by defining the areas covered under the umbrella of the CIA of information Security. It does a nice job combining the details necessary for implementation with description of why it should be done in the manner prescribed. The real strength of the book is the section on Cloud implementation in setting up for Platform as a Service. Chapter 4 addresses using Azure in a virtualize environment supporting infrastructure as a Service. This chapter takes great care to address the various Cloud environments where setup might occur. it includes special care for the operating system firewall and the Azure environment in a VM.

It is quite old-fashioned in its setting, but the strong story and the personalities could never be old-fashioned. The two sisters, Marguerite and Marianne, are very different and represent two different possibilities for a woman's life. Strong-minded Marianne's personality is more stylish according to the standards of today, but gentle Marguerite has a strength and wisdom of her own that one could also learn from. The part where the sisters talk to each other as old ladies is one of my favorite things in all literature. I also love the depiction of the (really clueless) character William that the girls are both in love with and how he grows as a man, even though he is never that bright. If you read this, you won't be sorry. As one reader noted, there is some silly thinking about people from other races in certain parts of the book, but although I am black, I found this only mildly annoying and I think it can be easily skipped over. And one of the most interesting sections in the book is when Marianne is forced to live as a Maori and learns a great deal of respect for them and their way of life, in spite of herself. The destruction of their culture is presented as a tragedy, in a very thoughtful way.Goudge was a very intelligent writer and should be better known. You need to read this book with an open mind; the characters don't behave as we are taught to expect to in the late twentieth century, but there is much to think about and much to learn. Certainly it will make you question some of your assumptions about women's lives.

Making a good job of a By A Customer I first read Green Dolphin Street as a teenager after seeing a television replay of the MGM movie version of the book and becoming curious about 19th century New Zealand and the Maori civil wars. Since then, IÕve reread it two or three times and always find myself engrossed in the characters and the wonderful descriptions of the landscapes they inhabit. Goudge is a very lyrical writer whose vivid portrayals of people, places, and things stimulate your imagination and make you feel you are right there living the story with them. A strong thread of spirituality or religion runs through her books, which isnÕt my personal cup of tea, but the author never lets these elements take center stage. Her focus is very much on character and character development, and she creates complex individuals who are multi-dimensional Ð never black and white. They keep you interested and turning the pages to find out whatÕs going to happen next. The basic plot in Green Dolphin Street follows the life choices of two very different sisters, Marianne and Marguerite, and the man they both love, William Ozanne. All three form a bond as teenagers living on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel during the mid 1800s. The author does a truly marvelous job depicting the charm of the windswept city of St Pierre Ñ its sunny sheltered streets, high-walled gardens, and tall granite houses, all softened by roses, hydrangeas, lavender hedges, and tangled vines. Marianne at age 16 is dark, elfin, and intelligent: ÒThere might have been beauty in her black eyes had they not been so needle sharp under the heavy black brows . . . and so full of a hunger that disturbed one in the eyes of so young a girl . . . and the lips, folded in so mature a repression of her passionate temper, and the brain that was too quick and hard and brilliant for her years and sex.Ó Marguerite, at age 11, is gentle and easy-going: ÒShe had taken to herself her motherÕs fair beauty and as muchÑand no moreÑof her fatherÕs intelligence as it was desirable that a pretty child should have, and to them some good fairy had added something else, the best of all gifts, the power of enjoyment, not just animal enjoyment of good health and good spirits but that authentic love of life that sees good days.ÓEach sister quickly and secretly determines that William is the love of her life. William, in turn, is immediately drawn to one of the girls, but he is a somewhat absent-minded and indolent lad and when as a young adult, making a living harvesting lumber in New Zealand, he sends for his true love, he writes the wrong name in the letter! The consequences of his mistake and how he and his new wife hammer out their relationship (over the next 40 years) is the focus of most of the book. The changes each of the three main characters goes through during the course of the novel reflect three deep cravings of the self: the restless craving that makes man a wanderer looking for a better country, the craving of the lover searching for the perfect mate, and the inner craving for perfection and spiritual purity. In contrast to civilized St. Pierre, life in turn of the century New Zealand settlements was rough, crude, and often dangerous. Again, Goudge does a great job evoking the atmosphere of New ZealandÕs primitive forests and WilliamÕs lumber camp. ThereÕs also some great actionÑan earthquake and a frightening attack by rebellious MaorisÑas well as wonderful secondary characters, including the foul-mouthed parrot Old Nick, WilliamÕs mentor Tai Haruru (a former Englishman gone ÒnativeÓ), colorful Captain OÕHara and his glorious clipper ship, and the crippled fiercely loyal first mate Nat. For those who enjoy a complicated romance taking place in exotic historical settings (think Forever Amber and Gone With the Wind), I think youÕll like this book.

They gave their copy to me and I'm now reading it again, 25 yrs later. It is an intense story of two sisters; one who is ambitous, strong and stubborn, the other who is sweet, caring and easy going. Both of excellent character and intentions. It reflects an ageless story of childhood devotion blooming into infatuation or love. And the odd twists in life that send us down different roads. My oldest impression of this book was the way these roads led one of the sisters to meet her soul mate and the other to meet her soul's salvation. In all things destiny controls. This book has adventure, travel, love and colorful characters. All in all, a very good read.

Meet Pastor Maggie Elzinga.

Twenty-six and single, Maggie has just graduated from seminary and received a call to pastor a church in the town of Cherish, Michigan. Idealistic and enthusiastic, Maggie jumps in with both feet.

Supporting her is Hank, her assistant (not secretary!); Irena, the brilliant music director from Romania who dresses in vibrant colors and plunging necklines; Mrs. Abernathy, the resident-know-it-all; and Ed, her mentor from seminary and her biggest cheerleader.

Maggie encounters her first funeral (for a not-so-loved man who choked on a chicken bone), discovers her tendency to rescue motherless kittens (which doesn’t go well with living in the parsonage), and learns that being a part of a community can be simultaneously suffocating and life-giving.

To Love and To Cherish, by Barbara Edema

From the Author Dear reader,This first book of the Pastor Maggie Series was a joy to write. It is based on a lovely church in Chelsea, Michigan, The First Congregational Church, which I served from 2004-2010. The characters are born of my imagination, but I suspect you will recognize them in every church!I hope you enjoy the ups and downs of church life, small town life, and the special relationships they forge. Having been a pastor for over twenty years, I have been inspired by the good, the bad, and the hilarious. If you haven't been to church in awhile, you might enjoy sitting in the pew of this book. You are very welcome here!

About the Author The Reverend Dr. Barbara Edema has been a pastor for over twenty years. To Love and To Cherish is her first novel, and was inspired by her experiences of parish life in a small town. In addition to countless sermons and a weekly blog, pastorbarb3.blogspot.com, she is the author of three plays, all successfully performed and well received. She continues to write the Pastor Maggie Series and is eager to share them with her readers. Barbara lives in DeWitt, Michigan with her husband, Dr. Douglas Edema, and an assortment of cats.

The story is based on real "characters" that can be found in small towns across America. I am lucky enough to live in a small town and experience the genuine love, fellowship, and sticky relationships author Barb Edema creates for her readers. Maggie is an impetuous, innocent young woman chosen as the leader of God's flock. This is a coming of age story as Maggie realizes the responsibilities of her call to ministry and the depth and power of love, both given and received. It will make you laugh, cry, and discover the real treasures in life to cherish.

The author paints a wonderful description of each of the characters and you can picture each one in their roll at the church and in Maggie's life. I laughed, I cried, but most of all I found myself admiring Maggie's heart as she lovingly and patiently ministered to this congregation through all its ups and downs. Maggie taught me that whoever God puts in my life I need to show them the love of Christ no matter how much they rub me the wrong way. Now I think I'll go and make a pie (read To Love and To Cherish and you'll know what I mean).

By Lacey This book is not what you would expect, at first glance you might just think it's about a woman pastor and her first church she's preaching at. Possibly expecting mostly talk about God and lots of sermons. This book is so much more than a Sunday sermon, its about finding people-family that isn't family by blood- a community that learns to get along and care about each other through all of life's comidies, tragedies and indiosyncrasies. This book will have you giggling and crying all while falling in love with (and possibly hating some too) the characters. I can't wait for book two!!!

No matter how much experience you have with JavaScript, odds are you don’t fully understand the language. As part of the "You Don’t Know JS" series, this concise yet in-depth guide focuses on new asynchronous features and performance techniques—including Promises, generators, and Web Workers—that let you create sophisticated single-page web applications and escape callback hell in the process.

Like other books in this series, You Don’t Know JS: Async & Performance dives into trickier parts of the language that many JavaScript programmers simply avoid. Armed with this knowledge, you can become a true JavaScript master.

With this book you will:

  • Explore old and new JavaScript methods for handling asynchronous programming
  • Understand how callbacks let third parties control your program’s execution
  • Address the "inversion of control" issue with JavaScript Promises
  • Use generators to express async flow in a sequential, synchronous-looking fashion
  • Tackle program-level performance with Web Workers, SIMD, and asm.js
  • Learn valuable resources and techniques for benchmarking and tuning your expressions and statements

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Tremendous, but challenging. By Adam Rackis This penultimate edition of the You Don't Know JS series explores everything async: Promises and Generators, mainly. As usual, the content was deep and the examples challenging (in this edition especially so). This book is certainly not for the feint of heart; if you're not an advanced developer and you don't know about these topics, you might consider reading some simpler introductory material online before tackling this. The one negative was the editing; there were many places where a sharp editor could have really clarified and simplified matters. There were a number of places where I'd read a section two or three times, and basically say to myself, "so Kyle's saying X Y Z," and then three paragraphs later see him say almost verbatim, "X Y Z." On the one hand it's always nice seeing that you correctly interpreted something difficult, but on the other a more straightforward presentation would have helped. And many other areas would have similarly benefited from a tightening up of the language, and stating more clearly and up front what the lessons to follow were. But to be clear, the above criticism should not for a moment prevent a senior JS developer from tackling this book. It'll be well worth your time, and you'll no doubt learn a tremendous amount.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Promises make JavaScript almost a new programming language By Jim Fathman Kyle Simpson continues to impress with his in-depth study of JavaScript in this essential book series. This may be his best book yet for those who aspire to JavaScript mastery. Promises make JavaScript almost a new programming language, and if you read the book carefully and try the examples, you will come to appreciate why Promises are so important. The book tends to concentrate more on the why than the how, so before beginning, I suggest you spend some time experimenting with JavaScript asynchronous programming using the Node.js Async and Bluebird libraries. Once you are familiar with the raw mechanics of async programming, the book’s thorough treatment and rationale for the why of Promises will be easier to comprehend.JavaScript is arguably the most important programming language in the world, but it is not standing still, basking in its glory. JavaScript is continually reinventing itself, modernizing, and as developers we must trust in the wisdom behind the changes and embrace new language features. To do so properly requires guidance from experts, and there is currently no finer resource than this book series.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Promises and Generators By Tomislav Pesut Excellent review of async programming in Javascript with a lot of focus on Promises and Generators. Both are important concepts that are only going to get more relevant.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Mixed By Autamme_dot_com Another day, another book that promises to be the definitive guide to innovating in the digital age. To overuse a phrase, if I had a pound for every book…Is this a bad book? Absolutely not - it is just a question of whether it deserves its self-awarded “definitive” status as otherwise it does a reasonable job of explaining how a company can possibly retain its position at the top table, engaging and delivering benefit to customers as competitive pressures increase through the network effect and by being a so-called network organisation.Core to the author’s philosophy is how a company can react to markets that are changing, developing and being ever demanding at a pace that you cannot compete with, let alone control or observe. The author describes this book as being a survival guide that will teach you the new rules of the land and how to reinvent your company. One suspects you will need other help to achieve this goal.Reading through the book there was a bit of a love-hate relationship developing: at times you really felt a connection with the author’s messages and then things went cold and quite disconnected. Rinse and repeat. Combine this wavering feeling with the book’s self-described “definitive” status and its fairly heavy price (compared to similar books, where even a few dollars above the normal range tends to stand out like the ‘adornments’ on a bulldog) and it is hard to see it as anything other than an interesting, useful tool to add to your collection rather than your indispensible multitool that you would carry everywhere and rely on daily. Your mileage may vary.It is possible that the book suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Is it as open and accessible to the typical executive or is it an academically focused book. It feels as it doesn’t serve one master particularly well. Yet one will be fair, it was an interesting read at times, yet did it stand out as being a memorable, indispensible, definitive, agenda-setting guide to this reviewer? Sadly no. If you find this book available at a special promotional price or can browse it at a bookstore it might be worth a second glance, but there’s no unanimous buy-it-blind recommendation here.Other than that, there may always be a library somewhere…

An anchor book with links to lots of other books By Ron Immink At Bookbuzz we are huge fans of Peter Hinssen. “The new normal” was one of our anchor books for quite a while. We have been looking forward to his second book and it does not disappoint. It will become another anchor books in our stable when we work with clients.VUCAIt touches on a 3 core topics that our clients are struggling with; VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), innovation and organisational structures. Are you doomed to fail?We can safely say that some of the largest corporations are totally clueless about where to go next, suffer from horrible internal politics and inert boardroom cultures, and have given up the hope of transforming their bureaucracies. Companies are no longer smart enough, fast enough, or innovative enough to survive on their own.New NormalIn “New Normal”, Hinssen talked about how digital will transform everything. That ship has now sailed. The consequence of digital is that everything gets connected. Which means that everything is networked. Once everything is networked, a lot of things happen. Hinssen brings it a lot further then that. You need to become fluid. Fluid strategy, fluid people, fluid organisation. To deal with VUCA we will have to learn the aerodynamics of the era of networks, and understand how to build organisations that can thrive in a world that speeds up. Starting with an explanation about how muscle works and grows, this is very insightful, well written book.Packed full of great tips to get you started, this 26 week program will push you to be the best you can be. I am reasonably fit but really gota great workout from this great guide. I really like that there is a "beginner" variant for anyone training consistently under a year, i really believe this will help a lot of people build up within their own personal limits.Highly recommended for anyone finding they've plateaued or are looking for a bit more push!
