Continuing the story started in The El Cholo Feeling Passes, Barton's newest novel finds college basketball coach Richard Janus in an unlikely position: he has recently become the interim rector of Urban University, the woefully underfunded public college of Choctaw, Alkansea. When Choctaw is devastated by a major hurricane, Janus must battle with the unscrupulous heads of flagship ASU to keep Urban, the school he loves, from closing its doors forever. Told through the eyes of Metacom, the legendary Indian sachem of King Philip's War, Flagship is a blistering (and often hilarious) examination of the contradictions implicit in the American experience.

Alexander Barton’s latest novel features the return of Richard Janus, the popular hero of Barton’s first novel, The El Cholo Feeling Passes. And the 30-year wait was well worth it. Readers don’t have to read (or reread) El Cholo to appreciate Flagship. All they really need to know is that Janus never finished his PhD dissertation on King Philip’s War, so the legendary Metacom (aka King Philip) decides to write it for him. And since Janus never got around to telling Metacom’s story, Metacom decides to tell Janus’s. And what a story is is! Flagship is like reading two novels at once, both of which are totally engrossing. Chapters alternate between Metacom’s story of his people’s abuse at the hands of the conquering English and Janus’s frustrations in the face of academic bureaucracy and political incompetence as he tries to save his beloved university from dissolution in the aftermath of devastating Hurricane Hosea. Readers who enjoy first rate historical fiction and political satire will love this book. And they’ll root for both Metacom and Janus as they both strive against impossible odds to save their cultures from annihilation.

His story provides such a funny, delightful look (expose!) of university life. I especially loved the parallel structure and the writer's creative choice of narrator. For anyone who has ever taught or studied at a state university in the midst of a financial crisis, this book is a must-read. Whether or not you know this world well, In the Wake of the Flagship will surely make you laugh and teach you a thing or two about history.
