Miss Julia's Marvelous Makeover: A Novel, by Ann B. Ross

From Booklist Miss Julia, that “lady of age with years of correct deportment behind her,” is back for her fourteenth (!) adventure. This time around, husband Sam decides to run for the North Carolina state senate and then is sidelined by emergency gallbladder surgery. Miss Julia reluctantly agrees to campaign on his behalf, in spite of her misgivings about her political skills. Another challenge is presented by Trixie, granddaughter of a very distant cousin, who is dumped in Abbotsville for the summer in the hopes that she will absorb something from Miss Julia about “la-di-da living.” To everyone’s surprise, the charmless Trixie soon lands a boyfriend, Rodney, but Rodney turns out to be a schemer. Miss Julia’s efforts to thwart his plans to get hold of a piece of her property so he can build a mortuary complex lead to a typical Miss Julia escapade. A number of the series’ regular characters, such as Hazel Marie, are very much in the background here; introducing new characters and shuffling old ones around help to keep the series fresh. --Mary Ellen Quinn

Burns The 4th of July is right around the corner and Miss Julia is really feeling the heat (and not just because the temperature is rising). This summer she's hosting an uninvited guest, a young lady in dire need of a crash course in manners. As if having a sullen and uncooperative houseguest wasn't enough of a headache, Sam decides to run for the State Senate and Miss Julia - reluctantly - finds herself running right along with him (and you know how she feels about politics...and running). It looks like summertime in Abbotsville is turning into one hot mess, but Miss Julia has everything under control - more or less.As always I enjoyed the time I spent with Miss Julia and company. After so many years (this is the 15th installment!) it's like visiting with old friends. This is a charming book infused with warmth and witty, understated humor. The dialog is wonderful - the author does an excellent job of capturing accents and it's easy to "hear" the characters as they carry on conversations. Miss Julia's first person narrative is full of her clever (and sometimes hilarious) observations about human nature and social mores. As for the storyline...well, I'll admit that it's really just window dressing. It's cute and uncomplicated but mainly it's just an excuse to spend a few hours with these fantastic characters. This is a lovely "slice of small town life" story, and if that's what you're in the mood for then you've picked up the right book.As with most long-running series, it's best to start at the beginning. I've loved watching these characters evolve over the years, and I find this story of a lonely woman who creates a "family of the heart" and is willing to give love a second chance later in life really uplifting. The first book in the series is Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind: A Novel . There is no strong language or sexual content (and if you were expecting either one, then you don't know Miss Julia)."About the only good thing I could say about old age was that you were allowed much more leeway to say and do whatever you wanted" - Miss Julia

Thanks to Hazel Marie who helped with the makeover and Mr. Pickens shaped up her attitude. ( a surprise twist). Sam is running for a state senate seat so you know Miss Julia gets involved. The real trouble is when Etta Mae and Miss Julia sneak around to find the person who is trying to buy her trailer park land for a cemetery. It will make you laugh for sure!

There are so many other wonderful characters in Abbotsville and would rather have seen more of the core characters. They are the reason I read the Miss Julia books. Ann B Ross may be tired of writing about the same people but I love to read about them and their new adventures and just daily funny and cozy lives. I hope Abbotsville doesn't go the way of Mitford!!
