Professor Dave Gordon is about to experience the weirdest, most unpredictably stressful three weeks of his teaching career. As a well-respected clinical psychologist at the height of his profession, he's ready to prod at a few boundaries in the name of science and learning. He's challenged himself to find ways of inspiring creativity and emotional sensitivity in his students.

Excited by what he considers a brilliant idea, he decides to use examples of infamous sex scandals involving prominent political figures to illustrate novel principles of psychotherapy. He wants his advanced graduate students to hear new approaches to treating shame and guilt, and to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of compassion and forgiveness.

As each student's own issues come to the surface--and serious complaints are raised against him--his plan begins to unravel. Dave attempts to deal with the fallout, but is forced to face the implications of his own resistance to change. As he becomes increasingly unhinged and ever more anxious to understand the unexpected price of his intellectual hubris, he has some big questions to face. Where did he go wrong? Have his concerns for gender equality been misjudged? Can he ever forgive himself? What's next?

On one level this book tells the story of psychologist Dr. Dave Gordon, a man of whimsy and naivety who finds himself in a “hornet’s nest” – both with his colleagues and his students. Dr. Gordon uses his skills in therapy, his knowledge of theoretical frameworks and his own mix of decency and the insights of age to try to ride out the various challenges he is forced to confront. On another level, this book explores the interweaving of clinical therapy, feminism, and the politics of academe. The plot is played out against society’s fascination with the fatal flaws and guilt of celebrities. There’s a lot in this book, possibly too much for some readers, but as you read you have the sense that you’re in the hands of a sure-footed, insightful thinker and that’s a rarity.

The voice of the storyteller, Dr. Gordon, is strong and the many insights and stories of life inside the “Academy” ring true. This fine first novel, sheds a light on the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of university life. I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration of the relationships among Dr. Gordon and his students and how the practices and principles of psychology and counseling were woven throughout the stories of the students and their interactions with their faculty. The plot is excellent and the characters are very real. I read this novel with great interest, not only because of my professional position as dean of a college, but as a mother of a daughter about to enter a Ph.D. program in clinical health psychology. Rest assured this is on her summer reading list!

I loved the characters and their relationships By Christine Sleeter Fascinating interplay between a graduate psychology course from the point of view of the professor teaching it, and how the content brought out issues in the life of each student. I loved the characters and their relationships. For anyone who periodically laughs (or gets frustrated) with the dysfunction of much of university life, this book will resonate. And for anyone who would like to see more respectful relationships among people in higher education, this book offers keen insights. A fun and provocative read I couldn't put down!
