Review "It's a great blend of urban fantasy and horror with a style that brings to mind classic African folk tales. But coupled with a wholly unique and modern twist that is all Burris' own." **FIVE STARS** Kayti Nika Raet, Author of Niko

By Amazon Customer It is hard for me to get excited with a lot of newer books since so many seem like others I have read or in the case of "Twilight" they weren't as good as everyone claims they were. And then there are the lengthy everyone must make a series otherwise it won't be good and me I am trying to figure out why since sometimes it is good to leave things off as they are. Fortunately Constance Burris has pulled me back into the position where I feel like I need to get the second book to read it although fortunately for me it isn't that much of a wait until then. I enjoyed "Coal", which was my introduction to this author, but it was "Black Beauty" that has amazed me. The details, the clues given together enough that if you were paying attention you can make some leaps that allow victory before plunging you back into another unsolvable mystery and the woven plot that just seems to flow even when most others would have had you scratching your head. And one thing is this author knows how to leave you hanging.... The characters were a bit more well-made within this book and I found myself relating to them more strongly than before. And even though I know this is a prequel and that it could very well be a standalone I am hoping that we will meet some or even all of the main characters that were having complications in some other books of the series, especially Sean. It doesn't seem right where it ended off for him while I can feel there is more to his story. I didn't get much of a horror-vibe off this book, more than likely due to the original Grimm fairytale conditioning. There was some parts that may be gruesome depending on how you see it but for me it was perfectly blended while my favorite part I won't mention at this time but I can safely say that it was outside the box thus its unusualness is one of the reasons I have latched on so selfishly to this book.

The kids all live in the same neighborhood--they're friends and rivals--and what's really wonderful about this structure is how By Far-ranging Reader Black Beauty is structured as a series of interrelated stories, the stories of five teens and their dealings with Crazy Jade--a single mom who, rumor has it, might just be a witch. The kids all live in the same neighborhood--they're friends and rivals--and what's really wonderful about this structure is how your sense of their connectedness and their personalities changes as you get the different perspectives. No one's really a villain, and no one's beyond reproach either--they all feel really **real**.Each of them come to Crazy Jade with a request, and they all get more than they bargained for. Shemeya needs more confidence--and the transformation to her dreads ends up giving her just that, but in a very unexpected way. Ashley makes the mistake of stealing a spell book of Crazy Jade's--that, and she doesn't follow the hair-relaxing instructions Jade gives her--and her fate truly terrified me. The amount of time Andre spends making himself look just right is rivaled only by my own son, I think, and his fate ... well, let's just say that I like the author's take on the Metamorphosis trope. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the supernatural forces at play are bigger than just one possible witch--the very highest levels of the fey realm are involved. This book sets the stage for Coal, Book One of the Everleaf series, which I'm reading next. I'm hoping very strongly that the five teens we met in this book appear in the next. As scary tales, each of the kids' stories here in Black Beauty is more or less complete, but in terms of the overall story, I'd definitely like to hear what happens next for them.A note on the title: All the kids are black, and looks and beauty--and what constitutes beauty--is really important in the story. Shemeya is empowered by embracing her natural beauty; Ashley is all but killed by trying to distort hers. It's interesting, in this context, that Jade herself is not as she appears.

Interesting Mix of Characters By jwalker https://thebookmarkplace.com/2015/12/23/book-discussion-black-beauty/Romance Score: You’re TryingSince there are multiple storylines, it’s hard to score all of them fairly, but the stronger couple is in the novella. They have to balance different cultural and social expectations and responsibilities with their affection for one another. The other couples don’t have as many feelings to deal with when trying out a relationship.Feminist Score: Good EffortThis score was a pretty difficult decision for me – again because of the multiple stories there are some where I want to say absolutely NO and then others where I was excited to see the women standing up for each other. One story in particular deals with the social pressure to look a certain way and another shows how calling one woman an insult can represent the wider world’s views about women in general. I’m giving a higher score because, even when showing things I wouldn’t want to give points for, those problematic items are called out. Plus, women are the ruling queens in the storyline woven through each piece, so there’s that.Diversity Score: Good EffortThe stories take place in an apartment complex with mostly black and Latino/Hispanic residents – in itself is not usually represented in mainstream books. Add on that several of the families are living at or below the poverty line and you get something that is rarely seen. I really liked the world Burris built here; it’s definitely filling a hole that exists in publishing. However, there are a couple of issues. One is that the woman behind all the lessons is called “Crazy Jade” by almost everyone. This is problematic because “crazy” has a long history of being used against women, especially black women, and people with mental health issues. And, people also keep talking about her “voodoo” but nothing that I read seemed related to the actual religion so it was perpetuating stereotypes about voodoo. I will say that one character does try to call out his friend for calling it voodoo, so there is a suggestion that it’s not ok, but it’s never fully deconstructed. The stories also explore colorism, sexism, body image, and “good” vs “bad” hair in the black community. I can’t really speak to the portrayal of hair or colorism issues except but I know they’re important so I’m glad to see them here. Overall, I think the characters and setting are much needed.Awesome Factor: Good EffortI didn’t connect with some of the characters as much as I would have liked (probably because these are short stories), but I still really liked getting to know the world and the people in it. I was intrigued by the novella and want to know what happens after it. Jade is an engaging character and I would love to know more about her backstory. Overall, the community and stories had just the right amount of “WAIT – what just happened?” to keep me involved while also showing the daily struggles of dealing with life.Favorite CharacterSean – at first I liked him the most because he seemed the most level-headed, but as more of his story came out, he became an even richer character and I felt for him and his dad.Favorite LineAndre’s conversation with his sisters after he visits Jade was on point. You’ll have to read it yourself, though.Fun Author FactConstance Burris is an environmental engineer, which just goes to show that science and art can mix!Is this worth a book hangover? The answer is going to totally depend on your reading preferences. This is a collection of paranormal stories with a bit of fantasy added into the novella. If you like that kind of thing and want to meet some great characters, go for it!
