From the Author I have authored books in the past, but Forged on the Field marks my first attempt as an editor. I found it enriching to listen to the voices of so many learned mission practitioners. Together, their voices harmonized but did not fully blend, so as to produce a symphonic wisdom composed of various but related strands rather than a single melody. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed composing it. I trust you will!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's like going to the annual leadership conference. By Missions Catalyst Imagine yourself at a mission leadership conference. You are surrounded by hundreds of mission leaders from diverse contexts all over the world. There is no way you would have the time to spend even a few minutes with each person at the conference. In this book, in a sense, you can. (And, if you're an introvert, rejoice: you can pull away any time you need a break!)"Forged on the Field" presents more than 70 letters from global mission team leaders writing to inspire, encourage, and train new team leaders. Contributors share lessons learned (mostly the hard way), answer the “what do you wish you’d known?” question, and more. A majority (but not all) of the letters were submitted by leaders of church planting teams with MacLeslie’s organization (mine, too), which is Pioneers. though most seem aware they are writing to a broader audience, some mention Pioneers by name and use agency terminology that is probably unnecssary. No other agencies are mentioned by name.Books on leadership abound, but few speak directly to the concerns of those who lead mission teams in cross-cultural contexts or give such leaders a voice. So this is a unique book, and I found it to be a treasure. It’s also intended to be the first in a series of similarly structured “field notes,” one volume a year, with advice for prospective missionaries, perspectives on preparation, and suggestions for workers re-entering their own cultures. I’m looking forward to volume 2.It should be noted that though the title of this one may suggest a gathering of top international leaders in the global mission movement, many writers are or were rank-and-file field leaders, leaders of church-planting teams and area or regional leaders that oversee such teams. And, in keeping with the agency's (and industry's) demographics, they include women and non-Westerners, but more Western men than anything else. Many (but not all) of writers assume they are writing to a male audience. Many of the letters cover the same themes - humility, listening, responding to unjust criticism, living in grace, etc. Some of the leaders give conflicting advice, and the balance is good. Some of the leaders came into leadership reluctantly, as is often the case when coworkers lose visas, get sick, etc. My favorite line is: "God knows you don't know how to do this."
