Excerpt from John Huss: His Life, Teachings and Death, After Five Hundred YearsJohn Huss belongs not to Bohemia alone. He has a place in the religious history of Europe and the West. For the three communions of Christendom his career has an interest. As for the Greek church, some of its historians find in his preaching and the preaching of his predecessors a reminiscence of the original type of Christianity prevalent in Bohemia which, they hold, was of Oriental origin. The Roman Catholic communion cannot forget that his personality and teachings occupied the attention of the famous council of Constance and was the concern of the great theologians and churchmen of his age, and that his sentence to death as a heretic threatened the permanent alienation of Bohemia from the apostolic see and also involved that country in some of the most lamentable religious wars Europe has seen. Individual Catholics may follow Bishop Hefele and admire Huss's moral heroism in the face of death, but no official proposition has been made to remove the opprobrium which was cast upon his name by the council of Constance as the church has done in the case of Joan of Arc, from whom it has not only removed the condemnatory sentence of a contemporary ecclesiastical court but whom it has even beatified.To Protestants Huss appears as a forerunner of the Reformation by his assertion of the authority of the Scriptures and his definition of the church. Fascinating 1915 Edition By Laurel Hallman I bought this as preparation for my trip to Prague expecting I would have to wade through antiquated language and dense history. I was pleasantly surprised with how accessible it was. It captured the tensions of the time, the betrayals that ended in Huss' terrible death by burning, and put his life and death in a very real context. I now have a much more nuanced view of why Huss was ahead of his time as a Christian reformer. I recommend this to anyone interested in knowing why Martin Luther called Huss' death the beginning of the Reformation. John Huss: His Life, Teachings and Death, After Five Hundred Years

Timeless By Kylie French A well-researched, comprehensive and balanced study of the importance of John Huss as a challenger to Medieval Catholic thought, as a precursor of the Reformation, and as a patriotic Czech figure. This book includes extracts from a range of Huss's writings, which give insight into his character, beliefs and concerns. Written so as to appeal to laity, scholars and clerics, it remains worthy of any reader with an interest in Christian, Czech or European history.

Very nicely detailed & scholarly account of an amazing beacon of Christ's light (but the print a little faint) By Tman (I am subtracting a star because the quality of print with this book is not great. It is a photocopy of an original in the NY City library. I complained about the lightness of the printed text, but the publisher said these are older copies that Amazon won't update with newer, clearer ones they have sent them. I even sent my first one back, but the replacement was the same, light print.)The content of the book was very good. It was written in 1915 on the 500th year anniversary of brother Huss's death. The author really goes into fine detail about the events of that time. I found it remarkable that this much detail survives from that era, 1365 - 1415. Hus was a follower of, as claimed by the Catholics - heretic, John Wycliffe. Wycliffe died of natural causes before the Roman Church could burn him alive (they did dig up his body), but his writings resulted in Huss getting burned at the stake. The writings of Wycliffe and writings and preaching of Huss scared the bejeepers out of the Catholics. With their adherence to scripture and not church government philosophy (the real heresy), these two were perceived (rightly so) as a supreme threat to their Catholic system and frequently opulent and excessive lifestyle.About the first 3rd of the book paints the historical background. Not being very familiar with that time, I found the details of names and events a little tedious - but that's just me. This is nothing to distract from the book, as I did gain a better understanding of that period. Someone with a better knowledge of that time and the people/events around Prague at that time, would likely really appreciate the detail. It is certainly good to have some understanding of this backdrop, to appreciate the forces Huss was up against!Huss was amazing. He never recanted. He kept challenging them to show him his errors from the scriptures. They were just so cemented in their Catholic government philosophy, that even the scriptures these officials cite is fully tainted with their weak bias. The details given regarding Huss's 6 month imprisonment is a fascinating study of a man standing firm in faith of his Savior and the Word. It is also a study in betrayal. Since we know we do not wrestle with flesh and blood, Huss was wrestling with the same enemy Christ did at His sham trial and death. Huss's ordeal and betrayal just took a lot longer.The book also touches on the crusades the Papal authority launched to eradicate those believers who followed Huss's ideas. Estimates are from 2-4 million people were killed in these crusades (a little known fact in this day). Nearly all were wiped out, but a couple centuries later the Moravian Brethren surfaced from this carnage, to make an incredible mark of love upon the world with all of their prolific mission trips to far off places and peoples!This book gave me a solid understanding and appreciation for a man who was at the bleeding edge of the Reformation, fully 100 years before Luther. (Luther was aware of Huss's writings and how he had been betrayed, and this most likely helped him avoid the same fate.) If it wasn't for Huss, Wycliffe's writings and attacks on these major church errors might have died away. Huss lit that bright candle with his own body.
