By LL You're Not EdithAllison Gruber’s autobiographical essays deftly probe the quirky, the mundane, and the dramatic calamities in her life with unflinching honesty and brazen humor. In each essay, skipping back and forth and sideways, the storylines of seemingly disconnected events weave their way to an insight about herself, about others, about life. Her no-holds honesty is refreshing and bold and wickedly funny.Gruber’s memoir recommends a simple recipe for dealing with our own and others’ dramas in real-real life. She willingly shows us how to face down the unwanted, the embarrassing, the tragic, with searing integrity and a potent antidote - laughter.A great read.

I'm about the same age as the author so the references to growing up in the 80s-90s make complete sense to me, but it's more than the nods to grunge music and doc martins that makes Allison so relatable. Her engaging prose, at once poetic and journalistic, paints pictures in photographs.I'm looking forward to reading fiction from Gruber.

In her simultaneously funny and moving essays By Randi In her simultaneously funny and moving essays, Allison Gruber is an astute observer in the best literary tradition. I especially loved "President of the Drama Club" in which we see the young Allison realize her destiny as a writer who can make a difference with words. I highly recommend this engrossing memoir.
