Although Grace Hawthorne has written this book from an earlier era, the storyline appeals to a reader like myself, who was born in the early 1940’s, as well as to the fast-paced generation of today’s youth. The book entails crime, greed, revenge, compassion, and love, with the dichotomy of an exciting southern city versus a sweet gentle country town. Hawthorne is a master at portraying plausible characters, both good and evil; some I welcome into my soul, while others are ominously despicable. I didn’t want this story to end, but who knows … maybe there will be a sequel. Surely other books will follow!

The plot had interesting twists and turns; several characters took turns as the "voice"; the geographical descriptions created great word pictures; there were bits and pieces of history woven in (the red light distinct in New Orleans; Angola prison, the Mississippi river, the flooding of Metairie way before Katrina, the Mafia in New Orleans to name a few);. I read Hawthorne's first book, "Shorter's Way". I enjoyed it but was not grabbed by it. Waterproof Justice, on the other hand, really took ahold of me and didn't turn loose until the last word. While I was reading it, I was not paying attention to the writing, itself - but having finished it, I see a lot of development and fine tuning. I recommend this as a great escape; a wonderful read - and I am looking forward to novel number three.

The day passed with the chores still undone, but the book was finished. Grace Hawthorne creates characters the reader cares about; so you want to know what happens to them. She is also cleaver with plot developments that keep you curious about what comes nest. Her descriptions of small-town Louisiana life and New Orleans in the '40s paint vivid pictures that make the reader feel like part of the scene. Definitely looking forward to her next book.
