If your deepest yearning is to be alive, awake and potent, then this book is for you. If you want to transform crisis into a gift, may this inspire you. If you are navigating the perils of a spiritual emergency or an intense spiritual awakening, then the human sober stories here will serve as examples. The invitation to love and acceptance that reside in the kernel of each of our experiences show us that humanity and divinity are no different. If your deepest yearning is to be awake to both light and dark, and integrate the personality with being, then this book is for you. The kundalini process is about waking up what is asleep in each of us. This book is also about using chronic illness and grief as doorways to transformation. This is part memoir, part self-help peppered with reflective questions and simple guided awareness practices after each chapter to wake you up. So put on your seatbelt as this journey traverses mercurial terrain. In the alchemical forging ground rises the phoenix. Welcome aboard! Different people experience kundalini differently depending on different stages of rising as well as what blocks are in the physio-psycho-spiritual system. These could be kriyas, opening of non-ordinary states, glossalia, etc. When the openings are in "wilder" phases because of the unblocking process happening, there are ways to help soothe it and listen to what is the wisdom the kundalini is sharing. Kundalini can be explosive and rapid as a fire razes through a dry forest of beliefs and world views. It can also be smooth like mist. Surrender honed over decades has allowed me to listen to the teachings of the Shakti (Divine Power Consciousness). There were times that my ego personality desperately wanted to control and manage the phenomena that was very disturbing. This grasping created more problems with the kundalini process. Think of BIG energy moving up your spine, and then LITTLE energy (ego) trying to micromanage the direction of big energy. It doesn’t work. Part of my development was seeing directly these distinctions as energy patterns, and then translating them into the integration of being and non-being. There is a necessary place for the ego, but I found it wasn’t the way we usually think about it.

Surviving Illumination Breaking through Crisis: A Memoir & Teachings from a Kundalini Rising, by Kathrina Kasha Peterson About the Author Kathrina Peterson was trained in Buddhist monasteries in Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka and Nepal. She is a holistic healer and teacher helping others realize their authentic selves. She offers integral body-mind approaches based on the integration of western psychology, eastern philosophy, somatic and energy medicine to assist transformation. My life orientation is deeply rooted in awareness training. I bring at least 25 years of body, mind and spirit exploration with the ability of the heart to make change at any age. The medium I use are awareness, touch, sound and movement. In working with babies to elders, I have come to witness what human development looks like and what it can be given the right direction. My teaching style focuses on how each student can flourish. My interest in the body-mind-spirit connection has its roots in my childhood. My mother was a natural healer in the Philippines and as a child, I often was around watching and assisting during her treatments. Having parents from two cultures was fertile ground for my perceiving of differences, similarities and connections. At the age of 21, I let go of a doctoral appointment in medical anthropology at UCLA after working in Calcutta, India with Mother Teresa. Facing death opened an existential angst and propelled me to look at life not from a 21 year old perspective, but from a fast-forward 80 year old woman looking back at her life, and choosing to live a life that made more sense. I spent the decade of my twenties living as a contemplative in the Buddhist monasteries in Asia. I graduated with a Masters degree in East-west Psychology from CIIS. My focus was consciousness transformation and spiritual emergence. Having drenched myself in the study of the psyche from both psychological and spiritual dimensions, I felt a somatic approach was needed to complement my investigations. I continued my explorations with even more experiential modalities that were more meaningful making for myself. My professional training became more meaningful with my own personal experiences with loss, spiritual emergence and chronic pain. When life unfolds unexpectedly, we learn to swim with grace, or otherwise we sink. These “dark nights of the soul” (yes, there is more than one in a lifetime!) have guided me into cyclical individuation and a deeper clarity and acceptance of the dynamic stability inherent in life.

A honest and inspiring depiction of thriving, in a life in which survival was so often in question By BookWorm Surviving Illumination seems well summed up in Kathrina saying, “Although the kundalini rising was significant in my life, I really want to emphasize that life itself, in its most ordinariness, is the teacher and the path.” That said, the book—part memoir, part autobiography, part inspirational teaching, and part workbook—describes a hell of a path. It feels like watching a daredevil driving their motorcycle full speed along a cliff edge, sliding, fishtailing, leaping, yawning way over the edge, but always with the sense of deep trust and sense of meaning to what might otherwise seem like a series of disasters. The through-line of her book really is this trust, and it’s not just something discovered in retrospect, from the safety of the locker room. The book depicts both a gift of faith, and the cultivation of faith in a life whose context is a wild range of light and dark, pain and pleasure, grace and trauma. Literally, at so many points she could have died, and was held on the planet via both grace and incredibly hard work and devotion. For those who are going through anything similar, with chronic pain of the body and an ongoing transformational fire of the soul, Kathrina gives a deep and redemptive felt-sense of the way through, from someone who, whoa, boy, sure has lived it.

Explore the sacred, fascinating, journey of a wounded healer called to live with Big Spirit By charlotte Fuller I was captivated by this memoir from the beginning, it was hard to slow down in my reading of it despite the author’s recommendation.Kathrina takes us on her unique quest to make a difference, make peace, create meaning, and live her life as an ongoing discovery in truth. She is on a mission, she is young, idealistic ... and brave. We travel with her across continents and (30 year) timelines. Through her journals, we meet characters and situations as pilgrims alongside, feeling and imagining through her visceral and poetic, and matter of fact descriptions. We share the small and large delights and difficulties in living a life of service, adventure and love. We marvel at the strained, stubborn and sometimes very strange manifestations and connections between of mental and physical illness and spiritual emergence. We marvel also at the irony of graduate schooling seems to further deconstruct self when reconstruction and restoration felt sorely needed. Many of us can relate to both the striving and grace that arises in connecting ourselves to Big Spirit when life appears to required we ‘keep it together’ while ‘falling apart’, this is where our deepest faith is tested and the practices that will heal us are found. Kathrina’s journey is a unique and potent example and reminder us this universal truth! This memoir of Surviving Illumination is accompanied by academic considerations and a literature review of relevant material. Personally, I would have liked more information on the nature of abuses referenced in the last third of the book, as they were not as fully recounted as the losses, yet I believe this book ought to take it’s rightful place as an extremely rare and valuable resource where psycho-spiritual-somatic connection and integration are highly valued and respected.Kathrina Peterson’s honesty in recounting her various physical symptom’s coupled with her experience and facility in writing, and spiritual Buddhist practices, place her reports of psycho-somatic-spiritual experience toward exceptional. The inclusion of personal story lines and poetry coupled with western study of psychology and Eastern study of Buddhism allow a rare glimpse into this (s)hero’s rich journey and Crisis of Illumination. Most westerners under extreme psychological duress or debilitated by pain are medicated and thus may be unable or uninterested in writing about it, even if they possess writing abilities. While I appreciated the books inquiry section, I felt it was near impossible to break away from my curiosity of the memoir unfolding and make that U-Turn back into self as suggested; relevant inquiries may have been more thoroughly explored and served me better as a stand alone section, explored after, reading the book. For those who endured early losses and felt the call to live within a Big Spirit early in life, for those who assist such people, and for all those who’ve walked the path of the wounded healer, this will be read with respect and gratitude.Bottom line - I loved this memoir, it’s a page turner, packed with beauty, heart, adventure, creativity and healing: Thank you Kathrina Peterson for your sensitive crafting and sharing - I highly recommend!

By G Bruce Kirkpatrick Kathrina Peterson is the feminine of Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford.Kathrina Peterson is the feminine blend of Dr Phil and Dr. OzKathrina Peterson is the feminine of The Dalai Lama. When I finished this book I knew for certain that Kathrina Peterson had reserved her justified and unique place in history.I say this because this book is a hybrid of intellectual knowledge and personal experiences. The survival of her own personal experiences qualifies this place in history. Her intellectual knowledge across a wide spectrum of respected global resources qualifies this place in history.Endorsement in terms of knowledge:I especially like the “Practical Applications for you” text that she included for the benefit of the reader.Strategically placed, this text asks the reader to take a look at themselves in a variety of ways.I learned many new things about my body and my emotions that were not ever apparent to me.You are going to need a pencil and pad for this one.I wrote myself new reminders as I followed her questions. You should plan and reserve enough time for yourself, even if you are anxious to get to the next Chapter. This book is about you as well.Endorsement in terms of experience:She is very open about her personal Spiritual Emergencies. It is abundantly clear to me that the text for “Practical Applications for you” originated from emergencies.Kathrina Peterson cares deeply about others, especially those that are at the edge and in fear of falling off.I am certain she wrote this book for that very reason.I recommend that one keep a handwritten outline of the “Practical Applications for you” nearby daily. That way you have quick and easy access in case of emergencies.I carry one in my personal organizer all the time.I will use it as a reminder that I need to live in the present and fear is an illusion.Recommendation:I highly recommend this book for anyone that has lost a loved one.It is a gift is that grief can be shared within oneness. The oneness is with others. The oneness is also with the universe. We desperately need oneness, no matter how much it hurts!I highly recommend this book for anyone that has chronic pain.Kathrina Peterson has developed a healing process from her first hand experience of body and emotional pain. This certainly qualifies her as an expert.I hold Kathrina Peterson’s written words “the living is now” deep within me. These few words sum it up for me.I give five stars to author Kathrina Kasha Peterson.
