Close-up and macro photography is one of the most popular types of photography among digital photographers today. After the big-range zoom, a macro lens is typically one of the next purchases considered by serious outdoor photographers and amateur photographers looking for close-up capability in all zoom lenses. Yet hobbyist photographers struggle. Many macro shots just don’t make it–not sharp, confusing backgrounds, muddled compositions, misplaced sharpness, and distracting light. Even more advanced photographers find challenges working with depth of field, dealing with light, and using different focal lengths up close. You need a book that goes beyond the camera manuals to teach you how to select and use various lenses to take great macro shots. This guide by pro photographer Rob Sheppard will help you conquer the fundamentals and capture stunning pictures. Sheppard starts with the basics. He discusses factors such as depth of field, perspective, and compression and which types of lenses are right for your style of shooting. You will have a better understanding of your equipment and understand your choices for investing in lenses. Beautifully illustrated with large, compelling photos, this book teaches you how to take control of your photography to get the image you want every time you pick up the camera.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Good informative read By JP Bruce Very informative and entertaining book. Many greats tips on getting images of nature up close. Liked the idea of assignments at end of each chapter. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning or fine tuning macro photography.

Good treatise on the subject By DonD As a teacher of Macrophotography as well as being interested in shooting close-ups for decades, I'm pleased by the completeness of this book. It's a bit off-topic at first talking a lot about how not to get into poison oak, ivy, and bugs, but it gets down to business soon and is complete. I like it enough to recommend it to my students.
6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. It's Not Close-up Enough! By Josh Ron Sheppard, a highly regarded photographer, did not live up to expectations with this book on macro photography. First, his macro/close-up photographs are mediocre at best. Most of the examples I would not classify as close-up or macro. This book contains a lot of excessive text with little to do with the subject. The strongest chapter in the book is Chapter 4 on depth of field and sharpness. Also, I was very disappointed that Rob only covered focus stacking in a very cursory way—no explanation on this important macro\close-up technique. Who was this book on Macro Photography intended for? I'm not sure!
