Emerson is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a novelist and freelance writer. And he is a prolific writer - in addition to this novel he is respected for his wide range of characters and social and gender issues in his books WHAT OF THE RANCH, THE GINGER FAIRY'S APPEARANCE, THE LONELINESS OF DONNIE MATTE, THE QUIET GLEN, THE DROSS, THE CLOISTER, TITO JOHNSON'S DIARY and VAGARIES.Reading GOLLYWEISTER, the first response is `why isn't this author better known?' Perusing the range of topics about which he writes he should have a wide audience platform by now (although there is no indication of his age). But he writes with such flare, such a polished sense of character creation and such piquant conversations that he immediately registers as an important scribe.The book's synopsis barely outlines the content: `Meet Paul Gollyweister, an Aspergian 52-year-old with anxieties about social interaction, maintaining eye contact and leaving his apartment. Still his writing talent has afforded him a comfortable lifestyle, including a million-dollar flat in San Francisco. But Paul's sterile existence is ruined when he happens upon a fifteen-year-old homeless kid.' To remind the reader, Asperger's syndrome is an autism-related developmental disorder characterized by sustained impairment in social interaction and nonverbal communication and by repetitive behavior as well as restricted interests and routines. And yes, that is important - Gollyweister is a memorable character for all his quirks, idiosyncrasies...and needs. When this uptight gentleman meets Roman in the park he is immediately turned off and wants to avoid contact. `I'm walking down the street staring into the distance at nothing in particular, in my attempt to avoid the cheerless and ugly faces of passersby. Then out of nowhere a young man motions as if he is about to punch me in the mouth. Granted, he does not actually hit me; it is a fist in the air thrown in my direction, more precisely, about two inches from my face. I pause briefly in fear for my safety and in wonderment of what possessed the ruffian to react in such a manner. As I continue my trek, I look behind me only to discover the creature is following me. He looks to be Hispanic or perhaps African American, probably a mere teen, wearing a white baseball cap under which peek tufts of large, black curls. Smallish, maybe five-feet six-inches tall, thin and adrift in a baggy, black hoodie and baggier black jeans.'Roman retrieves Gollyweister's dropped wallet, returns it to him and wants to be friends. `Roman, you are an eighteen-year-old homeless youth with a penchant for graft. I am a fifty-two-year-old man with a home in Pacific Heights. Friendship on the basis of what?' But as we soon discover Roman is Langston Lothario Luna (or Lalo) and is 15 almost 16 and without friends or family. He eventually appears a few nights later asking to sleep under a roof for one night.....and that is where the bonding and relationship so joltingly begun turns into a fascinating, funny, touching tale.Now and again we find new writers who capture our imagination and make us hunger for more. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining By Wando Wande I got this from smashwords. Anyway the story was entertaining and funny. For a self-published book, I didn't find any egregious grammar errors. The main character was part sympathetic and part nutty but thoroughly compelling. The book is very readable. I read this in one setting. Recommended.
