Sphinx is the remarkable debut novel, originally published in 1986, by the incredibly talented and inventive French author Anne Garréta, one of the few female members of Oulipo, the influential and exclusive French experimental literary group whose mission is to create literature based on mathematical and linguistic restraints, and whose ranks include Georges Perec and Italo Calvino, among others.

A beautiful and complex love story between two characters, the narrator, "I," and their lover, A***, written without using any gender markers to refer to the main characters, Sphinx is a remarkable linguistic feat and paragon of experimental literature that has never been accomplished before or since in the strictly-gendered French language.

Sphinx is a landmark text in the feminist and LGBT literary canon appearing in English for the first time.

Anne Garréta (b. 1962) is a lecturer at the University of Rennes II and research professor of literature and Romance studies at Duke University. She joined the Oulipo in 2000, becoming the first member to join born after the Oulipo was founded. Garréta won France's prestigious Prix Médicis in 2002, awarded each year to an author whose "fame does not yet match their talent," for her novel Pas un jour.

Emma Ramadan is a graduate of Brown University and received her master's in literary translation from the American University of Paris. Her translation of Anne Parian's Monospace is forthcoming from La Presse. She is currently on a Fulbright Fellowship for literary translation in Morocco.

Sphinx, by Anne Garreta

Review "The set-up is such a classic, relatable tale of falling in -- and out -- of love that one wonders why gender has always been such a huge factor in how we discuss relationships, in fiction and otherwise. . . . So, the author, and the translator, created their own language, championing love and desire over power and difference." — Maddie Crum, Huffington Post"The strength of [Sphinx] lies in its philosophical eloquence . . . Take away gender and race from the book, and what’s left? Love, viewed as a nihilistic transcendence . . . considerably more than a language game.” — Adam Mars-Jones, London Review of Books"In this sense, just as the novel is genderless, it is also genderfull . . . Garréta finds endless shades of in between and out of bounds, her characters taking shapes no other text before—or since—has imagined." — Lauren Elkin, Bookforum"Garréta’s aim was to overthrow gender binaries carried by language, and in light of recent demands by transgender groups to use gender neutral pronouns, Sphinx seems curiously prescient." — Catherine Humble, The Times Literary Supplement (TLS)"[Garreta's] been called influential and groundbreaking, and with this, her first translation into English, it is easy to see why. Sphinx is an important contribution to queer literature—fascinating, intelligent, and very welcome." —Lambda Literary"Sphinx is an almost effortlessly readable, atmospheric love story, like a Marguerite Duras novel starring a pair of genderless paramours who haunt the after-hours clubs and cabarets of Paris. The conceit is so simple and so potent that it’s impossible to get too far without pondering big questions about the role gender plays in the way we think about love in literature — and in life." — Flavorwire Staff Pick by editor-in-chief Judy Berman"For Garréta, it just may be possible then that the body occupies the space of language as powerfully as its capacity to produce it." — Tyler Curtis, BOMB Magazine"Sphinx is a novel of passion and loss that transcends gender and speaks to the universality of desire and loss, morality, spiritual crisis and the need to connect and belong. It’s also a novel that captivates and propels the reader to question the boundaries of desire and memory—and which one ultimately holds us captive." — Monica Carter, Three Percent"A unique novel, Sphinx succeeds in telling a love story without names or genders, allowing the reader to interpret the novel however they wish. Set in Paris and calling to mind the work of James Baldwin, this both feminist and LGBT book is deeply evocative in its word usage as it celebrates love without the constraints of gender." — World Literature Today"A powerfully compelling narrative." — Tobias Carroll, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, "A Year of Favorites""Centering her tale on the love and lust of a young couple in the Parisian underworld allows Garréta to train our eyes on the physical beauty of youth, the sensuality of anonymous bodies, and our preconceptions regarding both. The bodies of je and A***, left bare of gender markers, create the need for a new, more vigilant kind of reading that involves a constant undoing of assumptions. They cry: Read yourselves, not just us." — Jane Yong Kim, Words Without Borders""However, the fragments that do surface from this unconscious reservoir are vividly and eloquently incarnated. This is particularly true of the prose around lights, music, and bodies—the primary elements that compose nightclubs. They are rendered in rapturous tones . . . I could go on—exquisite fragments like these are packaged in nearly every page." — John Taylor, The Rumpus"Garréta’s removal of gendered grammar is less an indictment of gender—or sign-bearing bodies—and more of a narrative challenge, a queering of language. This is also to say Sphinx is less of a queer romance novel than it is a poetic queering of love itself." — Meghan Lamb, The CollagistOne of the Dallas Observer's "13 Books to Read this Summer"The Paris Review Staff Pick by Charlotte Groult"The body may be divine, but it can only be seen in such close focus that individual limbs can hardly be distinguished: we are left with flesh and bone, plus a few spinning hormones." —Joanna Walsh, The National"I must start by saying that I simply devoured this book. Its romp through seamy Paris nightclubs; its exacting portrait of a passionate affair; and its exploration of both mileus with a deft mixture of immediacy and intellectual detachment had me absolutely obsessed with it — I just had to know what was happening next." — Tom Roberge, Albertine Books Staff Pick"Spectacular." —Aaron Westerman, Typographical Era (5-star review)"Quite remarkable, and a rewarding piece of experimental—in the best senses of the word—fiction." —Michael Orthofer, Complete Review"We search for signs from our lovers. We search for signs from those of us who we would like to be our lovers. The media, the market all of those things they tell us which signs belong with whom. Sphinx subverts all of this, offering the reader signs that can be aligned to anyone of any gender. But the book does something beyond this game of language and gender. Garréta is asking her readers to change their perception of a tale of lovers. This is no small task and elevates her Oulipo trickery beyond linguistic change and into the realm social change as well." — Allison Grimaldi-Donahue, Queen Mob's Teahouse"Masterful...an extremely ambitious experiment pushing the boundaries of language." — Sarah Coolidge, Zyzzyva"Garréta’s stylistic experiment has been carried out at once boldly and discreetly — it is difficult not to be lured into the story . . . [Emma Ramadan] has skillfully brought this thought-provoking novel to the English-reading world, where it has long been overdue." — John Taylor, The Arts Fuse"Untethered from the genre you’ve unconsciously assigned it, the story expands. Love, like the universe has a way of doing that. And yet you sense a helplessness in the narrator to try, like you were, to pin something down." — Leah Dieterich, The Art Book Review

About the Author Anne F. Garréta is the first member of the Oulipo to be born after the founding of the Oulipo. A normalien (graduate of France’s prestigious École normale supérieure) and lecturer at the University of Rennes II since 1995, Anne F. Garréta was co-opted into the Oulipo in April 2000. She also teaches at Duke University as a Research Professor of Literature and Romance Studies. Her first novel, Sphinx (Grasset, 1986), hailed by critics, tells a love story between two people without giving any indication of grammatical gender for the narrator or the narrator’s love interest, A***. Her second novel, Ciels liquides (Grasset, 1990), told the fate of a character losing the use of language. In La Décomposition (Grasset, 1999) , a serial killer methodically murdered characters from Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. She met Oulipian Jacques Roubaud in Vienna in 1993, and was invited to present her work at an Oulipo seminar in March 1994 and again in May 2000, which led to her joining the Oulipo. She won France’s prestigious Prix Médicis in 2002, awarded each year to an author whose “fame does not yet match their talent” (she is the second Oulipian to win the award–-Georges Perec won in 1978), for her latest novel, Pas un jour (Grasset, 2002).Emma Ramadan is a graduate of Brown University, and received her Master's in Literary Translation from the American University of Paris. No Genders Required By Tony's Reading List 'Sphinx' is a simply wonderful book, a mesmerising look into the underworld of emotion and relationships - the fact that the writer has forced herself to hide the genders of the two main protagonists is a mere bonus. As the story develops, the two lovers are forced to grapple with their differences, as is the reader. It's tempting to play detective and look for hints of gender-defining behaviour, but after a while you're simply swept along by the story and the writing. Don't forget that translator Emma Ramadan was just as bound by the central premise, if in a different way, and her work here should not be underestimated. Everything I had read about it online pointed towards this being an exceptional book, so it wasn’t a surprise when the language on the very first page of the book had me hooked.“Languid nights at the whim of syncopated rhythms and fleeting pulses; the road to hell was lit with pale lanterns; the bottom of the abyss drew closer indefinitely; I moved through the smooth insides of a whirlwind and gazed at deformed images of ecstatic bodies in the slow, hoarse death rattle of tortured flesh.”Told through the prism of faded memory, we are drawn into the world of a nameless narrator; at the beginning of the story a student of theology, ostracized by the dogmatic opinions of the other students and attracted to the rhythms of the Parisian underworld; to nightclubs and cabarets and a life that takes place entirely at night. In this world our narrator meets and falls in love with A***, an exotic dancer, and the novel unfolds as the story of their unlikely but passionate and troubled romance. Before encountering this novel I had never heard of OuLiPo, a French group of writers who write within self-imposed constraints. Anne Garétta was not a member of the group at the time of this (her first) novel’s first publication in 1986, but she is now, and as I understand it this one would have met the standards. As Daniel Becker says in his introduction, if you don’t know what the constraint she imposed is, then do everything in your power to keep it that way until you have a chance to read the book, and see how long it takes you to work it out. By that I mean close this window right now and do not finish reading my review; nor should you go on to read the excellent reviews on roughghosts, Tony’s Reading List, or Mookse and Gripes. Read them afterwards, before you revisit the book (because you will).I couldn’t convince you? Or you’ve already read it. Well, if you haven’t, it’s on you.The defining feature of Garétta’s brilliant novel (and the translator’s note at the end makes it clear just how much of the substance and form or the book it impacts) is this: our two main characters, the lovers, remain genderless throughout. Their sexuality is fluid, undefined, there for you to project your own assumptions onto, and then to return and question those assumptions, amend them, attempt to look past them. In this way ultimately the novel turns on you, becoming a mirror for your understanding of the world. You can read it as you see fit and my understanding certainly shifted throughout. I was amazed at just how difficult it truly was not to decide on fixed gender identities; how I needed to categorise the characters in order to imagine them.“Crotches crossed and sexes mixed, I no longer knew how to distinguish anything.”Did I say it was the defining feature? It is, but in a subtler way than might be imagined. Writing without gender has of necessity shaped the language Garétta has used, and the miracle of the book is how that is woven back into the story, building the necessarily high-faluting language (she was forced to use the passé simple, a written-only tense which has no equivalent in English but which would normally suggest a level of literary pretension) into the character of the narrator. A*** is described largely as an object of beauty; a mirror rather than a well-rounded person, and while this grows again from linguistic constraints, it becomes an integral part of their relationship.“I was the shadow of a body that ignored me; I was also the source of the light that produced that shadow. All that came back to me was a projection of myself. A*** was merely a parasite interposed between my consciousness and my unfailing tendency to diffract the real.”From the very beginning A***, wary of the budding relationship, is concerned about being viewed as a cipher or a mirror, reflecting back beauty without ever being truly known. And in many ways this comes to pass, although whose fault it is would be hard to identify. The relationship is a highly physical one, as our narrator has renounced the world of the intellect for one of physical gratification, maintaining a distance from the world. The emotional remove from events; the first person narration; and the filter of memory overlaid on the story at first reminded me of that other narrator of Paris, Patrick Modiano, but the book quickly grew beyond that. The sense of ennui experienced here by the narrator and the level of introspection are entirely Garétta’s own.I loved the book; it was a fully immersive reading experience. There were things about it which I didn’t always love; the distancing from events which at first was part of the appeal became wearying by the end, and the narrator’s outlook on life was increasingly frustrating. How could anyone not feel frustrated with a narrator who tells us:‘”My aptitude for suffering astonished me in that moment. I was suffering as no one suffers anymore in this century; my sensibility was outmoded in the extreme. Had I ever been capable of loving without suffering?”What became apparent while I was reading the translator’s note (and Emma Ramadan deserves a shout out here for an amazing translation) was that all of these elements were a requirements of the constraint; that Garétta had had to shape her character and plot around this missing identity. It is a remarkable achievement and more remarkable for being a straight up great book at the same time.More reviews available at www.goodbyetoallthis.com

Explore the game-changing technology that allows mobile learning to effectively reach K-12 students

Mobile Learning: A Handbook for Developers, Educators and Learners provides research-based foundations for developing, evaluating, and integrating effective mobile learning pedagogy. Twenty-first century students require twenty-first century technology, and mobile devices provide new and effective ways to educate children.

But with new technologies come new challenges—therefore, this handbook presents a comprehensive look at mobile learning by synthesizing relevant theories and drawing practical conclusions for developers, educators, and students.

Mobile devices—in ways that the laptop, the personal computer, and netbook computers have not—present the opportunity to make learning more engaging, interactive, and available in both traditional classroom settings and informal learning environments. From theory to practice, Mobile Learning explores how mobile devices are different than their technological predecessors, makes the case for developers, teachers, and parents to invest in the technology, and illustrates the many ways in which it is innovative, exciting, and effective in educating K-12 students.

  • Explores how mobile devices can support the needs of students
  • Provides examples, screenshots, graphics, and visualizations to enhance the material presented in the book
  • Provides developers with the background necessary to create the apps their audience requires
  • Presents the case for mobile learning in and out of classrooms as early as preschool
  • Discusses how mobile learning enables better educational opportunities for the visually impaired, students with Autism, and adult learners.

If you're a school administrator, teacher, app developer, or parent, this topical book provides a theoretical, well-researched discussion of the pedagogical theory and mobile learning, as well as practical advice in setting up a mobile learning strategy.

From the Inside Flap

Digital learning has been slow to take off, in part because computers and smart phones lack features that can truly make technology-assisted learning engaging, interactive, and widely available. Tablets are poised to change all that. Their size, price, touch-based interfaces, and endless flexibility make them perfect for use in K-12 classrooms. However, the few educational apps developed to date have not taken full advantage of the tablet's educational potential. The reason for this has been a lack of communication and mutual understanding between K-12 teachers and mobile app developers. The authors of Mobile Learning have identified this critical gap and have written this book to bring teachers and developers together in conversation.

Teachers, education leaders, and developers alike need to get on the same page when it comes to the opportunities and challenges of educating students in a digital world. Dozens of interviews with in-service educators, along with decades of development experience and thorough academic research, form the basis for the ideas presented in Mobile Learning. Readers are introduced to the possibilities that mobile devices offer in both traditional and informal learning environments. The authors' rich discussion of how students learn creates a synoptic view of the contemporary educational landscape, allowing readers to orient themselves in ways that will be of the greatest benefit to today's students.

Without a clear definition of what makes a good mobile education app, we risk subjecting students to technology for technology's sake. Countless educators have already made this mistake, striving to bring mobile learning into the classroom without a clear sense of what makes mobile learning work. In this book, the authors—a team of educational software experts at SAS—develop a framework that will orient app development and provide teachers with a way to gauge whether current and future apps meet their students' needs.

From the Back Cover

A Handbook for Improving Education by Delivering on the Promise of Mobile Learning

For educators and developers alike, mobile technologies represent a significant source of untapped potential. The authors of Mobile Learning have taken on the important task of creating alignment among teachers, developers, and learners, helping you contribute to the next phase in both classroom and informal education. In this book, you'll learn how the science of learning can guide you in the goal of supporting learning with educational apps designed for tablets.

Mobile Learning serves as a guide to every step in the process of building transformative mobile learning—from development business models, design principles, and best practices to logistical guidance for the safe, effective, and responsible use of mobile apps in the classroom. Resources like The Great App Checklist will help you determine whether apps meet the needs of your audience, whether you're developing the apps yourself or using them with students. Mobile Learning is the only book to bring the goals of educators and developers into alignment for the good of students.

The research-based ideas in Mobile Learning frame the issue of technology in the classroom in a uniquely balanced and effective way. Read this book to learn just how far-reaching the potential of educational apps are, particularly for preschool and special populations. If today's students are to succeed in the marketplace after graduation, educators must address higher-order thinking skills and digital literacy. In Mobile Learning, you'll discover how teachers and developers can work together to meet the most urgent educational needs of our time.

He describes the rolls and responsibilities, and well as the various approaches to running personalization within an organization. He also provides a good overview of the tools that are available to web teams to actually deliver on these experiences.I will be personally recommending this book to colleagues and organizations that I work with who are diving head first into personalization and need a field manual on where to begin and how to be successful in this exciting field.

Particularly helpful are the frameworks provided to craft a personalization roadmap and most importantly, how improvement can be measured.

49 of 58 people found the following review helpful. Retitle to CISSP Prep Guide By Bob Monroe For some reason this huge book is mistitled. It should be called “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Security” or “The CISSP Preparation Guide”. At 699 pages in hardcover, along with a CD filled with additional material, you could hurt someone with this book. It is big and powerful in a literary and physical sense.Nobody has ever said that security is a small topic. This guide illustrates the depth and vastness of our field in an elegant way. At first glance, you may be intimidated by the enormous amount of information filled through all the pages and across all the chapters. Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian did a great job of picking apart all the subtopics that are needed to know if you want to pass the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner certification.More importantly, this book is an excellent prep guide for taking the CISSP and for getting a good job in this ever growing profession. The pay is good here, too. To be completely honest, the pay is damn good in this field and there is a massive shortage of qualified people in this profession. Grab this book and start learning. Now for the bad news. This is my own opinion and has nothing to do with the great work that the authors did on this book. The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner is being advertised as a big step up from their Security + certification. For those of you who don’t know, the Security + is a baby step certificate. It is a license to get your foot in the door, to learn even more. The CASP is an 85 question exam. I was at first shocked to read this in the book until I began laughing at the meaning of this. My daughter in elementary school has exams that have this many questions on them. The permit to register my dog has this many questions on it. For all you certificate-touting security folks out there, here is a quick and easy cert to add to your last name. For the length and depth of information in this guide written by Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian, I was expecting a heck of a better exam than 85 questions. The exam is pass or fail according to this book. What constitutes a pass versus a fail in unknown and not listed. In some exams, 70% is a passing grade. If the CASP requires a 70% passing grade out of 85 questions, than getting your name correct on the exam is half the battle. The CISSP is 250 questions, of which 50 questions are demo questions to see if those questions should be used in other exams. Weird, huh? However, a bachelor’s degree is four years of studying and testing. A master’s is another two years of more intense and deeper studying. A PhD in Cyber Security, which I’m working on, is quite a bit into the realm of ridiculously intense research and study.Based on Department of Defense Directive 8570, you will qualify for more jobs with a CASP and even more with a CISSP than I will with a PhD. It doesn’t make sense but it doesn’t have too because it’s the government, enough said. Now, back to the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner. Don’t start reading the introduction if you aren’t sure about taking the CASP. The introduction will scare the heck out of you because it covers such a huge amount of information and topics. Security is an ocean. You will need to know the top ½ of the surface of one harbor in that ocean to pass either the CASP or the CISSP. The book introduction gives you a good picture of how deep that ocean really is and it’s scary if you’ve never pondered the reality of this profession. So don’t read the intro unless you are ready to understand how deep the rabbit hole goes. The authors did a good job of scaring you with the introduction. They do an even better job of scaring you with the first chapter on Cryptology. Most other security books place this topic near the middle or back of the book. Not Robin and Troy, they go right for your weak spot. Theory and practical application are covered quite well. They kept to the basics of each topic, which is a nice refresher for me but might be a bit much for others new to the field. Each chapter has Key Topic markers letting you know that you might want to pay attention to this page or paragraph. The problem is, the whole book is a key topic. Every word written is important even though it probably won’t be on the 85 question exam. The chapters end with a review of concepts and multiple choice questions. The questions are worded to reflect exactly what you would expect from the exam because the book is written by the folks who made the certification. The book even comes with information on how and where to take the test plus a 10% off exam voucher. If I haven’t made myself clear enough, this guild is much more than an exam prep for the CASP. This book is an excellent primer for the CISSP; it just isn’t broken down into the ten domains of that exam. Think about it this way, if you read this book and take the CASP you are about 80% towards taking the CISSP exam with that knowledge. It is worth the price to grab this Pearson Certification book followed by one CISSP prep book. Then, you’ll have two very good certs and a nice job while I’m still serving hamburgers at a fast food joint with my PhD.

By Victor Great book, puts you in a fast track and does not lose time on things you were suppose to know at this level. However, cryptography points scattered on the book could use extra work, as the first chapter does. Cryptography seems to be to weakest part of the book, strangely with a dedicated first chapter. I would recommend skipping the first chapter if you have a cryptography background, but it is a good start if the concepts seems unfamiliar, it is presented in a professional language, maybe an academic book would be a nice complement to this reading.Overall, it is a massive source of knowledge, nicely organized for learning and reviewing (I will keep this book around).

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Passed on the first try with significant assistance from this book. By Life is Short Got this for my wife who is not a security engineer but was required to get a mid level IT security certification. Upon first reading I was aghast at how difficult it was to get a grasp of the material from just reading this book - and I have an MS in CS from a top tier grad school. After speaking with others in the IT field, I discovered that the certification is intended for people that already have some experience working as professional IT security engineers. This book seems intended for such experienced people. After my wife took (and passed) the exam, and after looking at materials she was provided by a training class in advance of the exam, I realized that this book actually covered more of the concepts and definitions included on the exam than any other reference material we used. In fact, there was nothing on the exam that was not covered in this book. Even the language and writing style seemed consistent with that used on the actual exam.

Famles: Fables and Fairy Tales for Men, by Neil Skywalker

About the Author

Leaving his small country of The Netherlands, Neil Skywalker took a risk and embarked on a three-year, 42-country experimental excursion. With a shy demeanor and limited budget, Skywalker overcame his approach anxiety, navigated foreign countries, and most importantly, learned to close the deal on hot women across the globe. After completing his epic tale of adventure, love, hard-learned lessons—and yes, even heartbreak, Neil published a book named "Around the world in 80 Girls - The epic three year trip of a backpacking Casanova" and wrote a screenplay based on his popular travel adventure for men.

Skywalker’s next endeavor took him from Holland to Hollywood in what turned out to be a short and dramatic tale of hopes and dreams, golden but broken promises, nice paychecks but no movie.

Now, Neil Skywalker is back with an imaginative twist on traditional fairy tales, written expressly for men. Skywalker’s offbeat creativity shines with his humorous collection of slightly warped fairytales.

If you, too, long for the good old days when men could be men, then this collection of whacky male-centric fairytales is sure to entertain you.

I picked up this book in the Kindle Unlimited program. It contains mostly traditional fables and fairy tales, but there are some original stories as well. I found myself getting caught up in the author's experience that led him to write a book where men are portrayed as bold, fearless men who know what they want and go for it.I found the adapted stories quite funny and entertaining. They are irreverent, completely lacking in today’s overly sensitive PC-only speak, and have the possibility of being offensive to some readers. The heroes harken back not exactly to Ralph Kramden days, but more like Peter Griffin meets Hercules. I found it quite refreshing. Of course, I like that sort of humor, so there ya’ go.

Debby Efurd’s fondest memories as a child was spent with her grand¬mother for story time. Fairy tales, fables, stories from her youth . . . they swept Debby away to another world. As one story ended, Debby would beg for more. When she was older, Debby fell in love with Bible stories and was ea¬ger to hear stories in Sunday School about Joseph or David or Moses. Then one day she heard the Greatest Story Ever Told and met and fell in love with the Main Character―Jesus Christ. That made all the difference. Somewhere along Debby’s life journey, though, Debby forgot who was in charge. That’s when life turned upside down. Decades later, after many trials and triumphs, she turned control back to the One who provides hope and transformation. Yes, stories can inspire, motivate, spur you to action . . . like an ar¬row right at your heart. Go Tell It! provides compelling stories of hope and transformation of lives who have each made a “180” by finding and sharing their voices. Whether your personal story revolves around one moment, one ministry, or a multitude of life events, the key is to point to the One who makes your transformation possible. All it takes is a willing heart and the courage to be honest . . . one story at a time.

She also encourages anyone with problems to talk about it and not hide them from God. She include many stories of people struggling who then found healing in their faith.I received the book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Everyone has a story to tell By SHAN Review for Go For It! by Debby EfurdInspiring book from beginning, what a dedication, until the very end. Debby shares her life, the good, the bad and the worst. The things this little one saw, heard and was forced to be a part of. These experiences definitely played a major role in some of the not good choices she would make later on, always looking to fulfill that need to be loved for whom she was.Debby was blessed with awesome grandparents whom were the soft place to fall during the many times of turmoil she would face. She shares right from the heart, deep down things that satan would have us believe would be best kept hidden. And as she shares, there is not only real healing for Debby but also is an encouragement for others to share, and be healed as well. It’s amazing what God can do with the broken pieces of our lives, but we have to give Him all the pieces. There is much to be learned from this book, both for those whom have had and for those trying to be an encouragement or support for them. There is Scripture throughout, quotes from famous people, and a big section in the second part: Surrender It, of personal stories of many whom have faced abortion, and how God saw them through. But it’s more than just that, as if that isn’t enough, but in the last section, Tell It, where we are urged to share our story. Ideas of what and how to share, followed by some great people of faith whom did just that. You must pick up this book and read for yourself. You will be amazed, inspired and ready to go out and share the good news, both in speech and in your actions.Thank you to Debby and to book fun.org for the opportunity to read this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. tell your story By chrisGA This is a book on two levels. The first is information and first-hand testimony about the lasting effects of abortion and ministries that address those affected by abortion, and attempt to prevent others from choosing to end life. It is a call to action but a plea for understanding of the needs of the many silent sufferers found even in church pews—“the largest women’s group that nobody wants to admit belonging to.” Many personal stories put “faces” on the pain and guilt experienced by so many of our sisters. These stories are powerful and important. They lead to the second level, the one that I will address here—the effects of “putting on a good face”, hiding our pain, WHATEVER IT MAY BE, going through the motions of life and even faith, without receiving the healing that we need.Debby shares her personal journey and the toxic, paralyzing effect of “running away, hiding from God, the world, and myself because I thought my problem was too big for God to handle.” Her conversational writing style is like intimate sharing with a close friend of the ups and downs of the roller coaster of her life. What comes across is a sincere desire to help others avoid the years she suffered until she found the ultimate healing, forgiveness and comfort found only in Jesus Christ. I have never had an abortion, but I can certainly relate to her story of feelings of low self-worth and of trying to be perfect and being always afraid I would do or say the wrong thing. She says, “I grew up feeling insecure and looking for comfort wherever I could find it.” Pain and lostness come from many life situations and hide behind smiling, “happy” faces. She says, “But no matter how far or fast I ran from the truth, God never left me. He kept pursuing me until I fell in a pit so deep that the only direction I could reach was up to my God in heaven.” No matter what our lives hold, isn’t this the story of so many of us? We all have a story to tell of how God “sought us and bought us”, working in our lives before we even knew Him. Debby urges us to share our own story redemption and restoration and let it be used to help even one weary, needy soul find peace and healing love. Someone needs to hear of this miracle freely offered to all of us. Rick Warren is quoted: “Other people are going to find healing in your wounds. Your greatest life messages and your most effective ministry will come out of your deepest hurts.” Let it be.I received this book through The Book Club Network, but the opinions expressed are solely mine.

Take Blogging to a Whole New Level By Yolanda Facio I've been blogging for at least a decade or more and I still found exceptionally helpful nuggets of information inside How to Write 37 Different Types of Blog Posts. I heavily highlighted areas to return to for a new blog I'm starting this month. The thing is, not every post type fits your audience. Ms. Arrow focuses on getting you to really think about who you are writing for. I kept my newest blog idea in mind, along with the audience who will likely be reading it, as I worked through Ms. Arrow's book. It helped me pick out the best post types and formats for creating a content calendar that will really resonate with my prospective readers.37 Blog Posts is a quick read, with helpful and timely information any blogger - beginner or seasoned - can use to get more readers, more traffic, more social shares, and even more sales!

Simon “How to write 37 different types of blog post” will give you useful information about the types of blog posts that work and their reason for why you’ll have success. You will also understand how to get the best results using the type of blog posts that you chose. If you want to know how to avoid blogging mistakes, or how to plan your blog’s content, I recommend reading Sarah Arrow’s book. This was already the third or fourth book I have read by this author. After reading each one of her books I always told myself… Sarah Arrow is a “blogging Encyclopedia”.Reading the book and seeing such a well-organized list with all 37 types of posts, I suddenly felt that I will never have another “writer’s block” moment. My mind can temporary be “blocked” by one, two, or three subjects but… for sure not all 37 types. To conclude, I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about blogging, no matter if you have been blogging for a long or short time. A special recommendation is addressed directly to all beginner bloggers. I know how it is to start in this field; I know how hard it is to track the good information down on all aspects you will encounter. Reading this book will provide you an abundance of valuable knowledge and more than this, you will have all you need in a single source.

Raymond Gunt likes to think of himself as a pretty decent guy—he believes in helping his fellow man and all that other good stuff. Sure, he can be foulmouthed, occasionally misogynistic, and just generally rub people the wrong way—through no fault of his own! So with all the positive energy he’s creating, it’s a little perplexing to consider the recent downward spiral his life has taken….An unemployed B-unit cameraman, Gunt accepts his ex-wife’s offer to shoot a Survivor-style reality show on an obscure island in the Pacific. Somehow, Gunt suffers multiple comas and unjust imprisonment, and is forced to reenact the “Angry Dance” from the movie Billy Elliott, among other tribulations and humiliations. Could the universe be trying to tell him something?

Worst. Person. Ever.: A Novel, by Douglas Coupland

From Booklist Down-on-his-luck Raymond Gunt fancies himself a Jason Bourne type, although he is basically a contemptuous, lustful, self-centered arse. He may, in fact, be the worst person ever, although he certainly has lots of competition. Raymond’s luck appears to be improving when he is hired on as a cameraman shooting young lovelies in a Survivor-like TV show on the Pacific island of Kiribati. The catch is that he will be working for Americans (so it’s bound to be shit), and Kiribati turns out to be anything but a tropical paradise. Ray never gets a break: his flight is horrible; he gets detained by security; he suffers extreme reactions to macadamia nuts; he eats bugs; he gets banished from the island. He’s even blamed for an escalating nuclear crisis. He’d almost be sympathetic if he wasn’t the worst person ever. Comically satirical in his depiction of the blistering superficiality and inanity of modern pop culture, Coupland (Generation X, 1991) here wallows in the carnivalesque as he indulges in gross-out humor and his characters’ bad behavior, but, unfortunately, it all comes off as misanthropic and unpleasant. --Ben Segedin

Review Praise for Worst. Person. Ever.

"It is hard to describe, out of context, quite how funny Coupland’s novel can be. A lot of its humour springs from the relentless hideousness of Gunt. And yet, increasingly, it is the very fact that Gunt — in Voltairean fashion — is the only character in Coupland’s menagerie who can see the awfulness of the human apocalypse around him that makes the book so compelling. Coupland’s eye for the strange, mesmerising wonder of modernity is being put, more than ever, to extremely dark use here. The fact that it is all so demented — and so frequently, belly-achingly hilarious — only makes that darkness all the more impressive.”—The Sunday Times  “Provocative and entertaining.”—The Daily Mail  “Riotous, frequently very funny.”—The Independent  “Filthy and funny.”—TimeOut London  “Clever bits of observational humour … his best book in recent years.”—The Toronto Star “An entry – a fun one – in a personal, pop-cult canon of its own.”—Toronto Globe and Mail“[Raymond Gunt] is a fabulous monster, with nothing and no one safe from his vitriol. Raymond torments the obese, faces multiple incarcerations, makes leering advances at every woman crossing his path, and plays a role in a potentially globe-threatening nuclear event… Coupland skewers a pop world’s growing insensibilities, and his protagonist is a charming villain whom readers will likely root for, even as he’s insulting them.”—Publisher’s Weekly (starred)

“Worst. Person. Ever., Douglas Coupland’s new novel, is engaging, funny and a rocking good read…Readers will identify with Ray Gunt in spite of themselves, taking pleasure in his crazy antics.”  --BookPage

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. it takes a bit of will power and fortitude to take this journey By She Treads Softly Worst. Person. Ever. by Douglas Coupland is recommended only for those who can appreciate an irreverent, profane, humorous commentary on modern culture that pushes all boundaries aside.Raymond Gunt is the narrator and the titular awful person in Coupland's latest novel: "...Mr. Gunt, you are the worst human being I’ve ever met. The. Worst. Person. Ever.” (Location 1083)Ray is a cameraman whose ex-wife, Fiona, gets him a job on an American reality show, Survival. Even though Ray is suspicious of her offer, he accepts, and recruits Neal, the homeless man who attacked him after he insulted Ray, to be his assistant. They are headed off to an island in the Pacific called Kiribati, via Hawaii. Along the way Raymond manages to insult just about everyone, while never shying away from the obscene or profane leaving mayhem and habitually using the f-word everywhere he goes.Coupland noted at the beginning: "This book began, improbably, as an attempt in McSweeney’s to reinvigorate the biji, a genre in classical Chinese literature. Biji roughly translates as 'notebook' and can contain anecdotes, quotations, random musings, philological speculations, literary criticism and anything that the author deems worth recording."While Coupland's humor is right on target, skewering pop culture and current PC sensibilities along the way, it takes a bit of will power and fortitude to take this journey. Not only do you have to be willing to laugh at Ray's antics and colorful language, you need to slog through the vulgar, crude, absurd and disgusting. Not all readers will be willing to undertake the monumental commitment to endure/ignore the language and commentary for the rewards the plot offers.Disclosure: My Kindle edition was courtesy of Blue Rider Press for review purposes.

17 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Not. His. Best. Effort. By J. Norburn This novel is not for everyone. I actually think it should have appealed to me a lot more than it did. I like dark satire, I'm fine with profanity, and I can appreciate a protagonist who is unlikeable. In this case, our hero, Raymond Gunt, isn't just unlikeable. He's the Worst. Person. Ever.If you like your fiction to have substance and to feature a character you can root for, Coupland's latest offering is not the book to read. I've read most of the authors novels and have always felt that while he has never hit a homerun, his novels are generally clever and insightful. My problem with this novel isn't that the lead character is a despicable human being. My problem was that I found much of the satire too obvious and the humour too broad, even predictable on occasion. Which isn't to say that there aren't some moments of inspired insanity. I was genuinely amused when Ray is forced to perform a Billy Elliott dance sequence on a US military base. For the most part though I found the humour, much of it involving Raymond's efforts to have sex (reminiscent of every teenage comedy, ever) and undergoing a `just when you thought things couldn't get worse' adventure (reminiscent of every `Trains Planes and Automobiles' Road Trip movie, ever) a bit tired and too juvenile for me.Coupland is usually adept at skewering pop culture with sardonic wit, but his primary target this time around is reality television which, for me, comes across as picking the lowest hanging fruit imaginable. It just isn't clever enough for my tastes.I did grin from time to time while reading this novel (nothing ever close to a laugh) but not nearly often enough. I actually found this to be a pretty tedious novel to slog through. It's a short novel so I managed to push on but I can't recommend this novel to anyone. Worst. Person. Ever. falls well short of the mark and a far cry from Generation X or Microserfs.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Obscene but Hilarious By Barry W. Brown An absurd tale of a photographer who goes to a south sea island tofilm a TV reality show along with his personal assistant/slave. Alongthe way they almost start a nuclear war. The book is obscene andfilthy, heavy on misogany when misanthropy just won't do. On the plusside, no porn although plenty of sex and the ethnic slurs areminiscule (except for numerous complaints about Americans -- adjectivedeleted so Amazon will accept this review).. Contains informativefootnotes including a recipe for fried cicadas. Hilarious. Not forthe fastidious but if you are an old curmudgeon at heart as I am infact, you will love it.
