About the Author Yan Lianke is the author of numerous short story collections and novels, including "Serve the People!," "Lenin's Kisses," and "Dream of Ding Village," which was shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and adapated into a film ("Til Death Do Us Part"). I know that I did not draw everything possible from this book, and I wish I had read it in a class led by someone better versed in Chinese literature and history than I. Even so, The Four Books is a compelling satire. It describes a re-education camp during China's Great Leap Forward, and anyone who has paid any attention to political regimes can appreciate its wry depiction of nationalism.The Four Books is structured as -- surprise -- four books, and I encourage everyone reading the book to begin with the introduction/translator's note. Each book is told in a different tone, from a different perspective, and each serves to highlight the inanity and immense heartbreak of each character's story. The translator has worked well, and the prose is seamless.This is not an easy read, per se, and I hesitate to recommend it only because I understood enough of the book to know how much I missed. However, those who enjoy political satire will enjoy the book.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Four Books By J. Hamby Wry and compelling, The Four Books takes the reader into an incredibly grim period of time. Ironically illuminating by using a sort of allegorical approach, it is meticulous in characterization. Yet the author employs a general title for each instead of actually naming them. Giving them a descriptive title though works toward shaping each in a way that I found complex, nuanced and brought each to life in a way I could relate to even those whose nature was far from empathetic.Here we get a novel that serves as a reminder and a rebuke. It reminded in away of Saramago's Blindness. Yet the tale wrapped in the realism of the actual events makes it a bit sharper. And a bit more poignant.

A better choice By SusanB A decent, well crafted novel, but the author's nameless characters (the Author, the Scholar, the Musician, the Child) never resonated with me. Instead, they left me feeling hammered by the symbolism. If you are unfamiliar with contemporary Chinese authors (as I am) and are looking for a hugely satisfying novel about the wrenching events in 20th century China, choose instead Life and Death are Wearing Me Out by 2012 Nobel Laureate Mo Yan.
