The Cuckmere Chronicles tells the story of a man destined for greatness, but undermined by the mistakes of others and his own flawed character. It’s a tale of loyal friends and daft friends, wizards and enchantresses, strange beasts and dark places, beer and even a penguin. But most of all, it's the tale of Ransley Cuckmere and his ill-fated love for the enigmatic Isabel Snow. Set in a time and place that touches on 19th-century London, the present and the realms of fantasy, The Cuckmere Chronicles is a gothic, noir novella, infused with a dose of dark, ironic humour.

Addictive, surreal tale of modern and magic straight out of left field By Kitty Smith I don't think I could pigeon-hole this surreal novella into any particular category. It's laid out like poetry which lends something of an addictive cadence to the flow as you read along. As Ransley once confides to Mrs. Snow, it's a bit like seeing the whole world through some hipster-tinted, steampunk goggles. Ransley Cuckmere's world is thrown into chaos after accepting an accidental invite to a ball at Henbane Manor. It is there he first meets the bewitching Isabel Snow. Rumor has it her family original fled to England from Russia to escape the terrors of a Eurovision Song Contest. As the story unfolds Ransley discovers some rather shocking history of his own, which is good because his own memory of his past is somewhat hindered by drink according to his doctor. Apparently this isn't his first turn around the world's bar. At one point he fears readers might give up, so odd and contrived as his story becomes. No worries. I was hooked at hello. It's witty and clever, and though I did a wait-what? more than once I couldn't put it down once I started reading. If you appreciate prose that flies from left field you'll love "The Cuckmere Chronicles"

Not sure if it was supposed to feel like an epic poem, but that’s what it seemed like. Ransley was a great protagonist though, drawing me in to the story. He is much like other gentlemen gunslingers, fighting for honor and still being a little reckless and sinful. And is Merlin an antagonist? I don’t know. His characterization is impressive, rounding out the narrative. The duel with Merlin and his two sons was my favorite part of the story. It seemed to catch my attention the futility of life, because Cuckmere was outmatched. Sometimes it seems like we are given a knife to use in a gunfight. The final reveal really changed my perspective. I don’t want to give it away, but when you find out Ransley’s backstory, it is a bomb that destroys everything you thought you knew about him.A compelling read that explores the themes of our purpose in life, what we are meant to accomplish, and if our motivations are just. We are all wanderers in the wheel of time. I really liked this novella and would recommend it to others!

Effective use of today’s vast geographic information (GI) resources requires more than just powerful technology for problem solving. It requires science to help us understand the way the world works, and to help us devise effective procedures for making decisions. Three previous editions have established this text as a defining multidisciplinary treatment of the scientific principles that underpin the use of geographic information technologies for problem solving. This extensively revised and updated edition provides a guide to the enduring scientific principles and information systems that support effective use of today’s GI. It also provides a primer on essential methods for analysis of GI, and the ways in which effective management of GI informs policy and action.

In the Spirit of Homebirth collects stories that celebrate the beauty and power of giving birth. Here are women from indigenous communities, of diverse socioeconomic classes and religions, in urban and rural settings, and the stories as well of family members and friends who witness and share the experience of homebirth with them. Partners describe the awe of watching a loved one bring new life into the world, children write sweetly about getting a baby brother or sister, and midwives and doulas tell us what it is like to aid women on their journeys.             In the Spirit of Homebirth presents birth as a physical action as well as a sacred act, an expression of deep love and of belief in the power of the human spirit. Homebirth is a choice, and In the Spirit of Homebirth tells us why women from all walks of life and their families make this choice today when they have the right to give birth as they wish. In the Spirit of Homebirth presents homebirth, not as an archaic practice but as a remarkably contemporary expression of a long tradition and a profoundly empowering and joyous event.

First I realized right away that the book should be read in unison with his 90 day journey, meaning one day at a time. Because if you move to fast, as with yoga, you'll miss something vitally important. The other thing was I immediately got out my pen and began underlining sentences, that hasn't happened for me since Course in Miracles fell into my lap a long time ago. Always a sure sign something significant is occurring. I'm finding that every day and every page contains an opportunity for the reader to disengage from the rat race and embrace the real race back to self. Page 114, "Life is here to support us. We are supported but we need to understand, practice, and engage the support within." I believe that to be a profound yogi acknowledgment. I feel a genuine teacher teaches without trying. Instead he/she teaches by pure example through experimentation {in this case doing yoga in an oven for 90 days}, and then documentation. As it turns out David Brown truly excels at documenting important lessons very eloquently. In closing, I think this is the perfect book for those who want a new and improved life but are a bit lacking in knowledge as to how to get that boulder moving.Namaste,Steven Martinez

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A highly accessible journey to healing, self-acceptance, and spiritual wisdom! By Matias Flury I loved this book. What I appreciated most was its groundedness, its honesty and openness, and its simplicity. The author presents himself just as he is: a recently divorced American guy, now a single dad, trying to somehow recover from the trauma of the broken marriage and find new balance in his life. In other words, he’s an ordinary Joe (in this case, David), and I found his lack of pretense very refreshing. He first turned to yoga when a doctor recommended medication for high blood pressure, and instead of accepting the meds he decided to try yoga. His ‘regular guy’ presentation both charmed and disarmed me, but as I soon discovered, there’s nothing superficial about this book. It’s a compilation of his blog posts written while undertaking the bold challenge of 30 days in a row of ‘hot yoga’ practice – which then morphed into 90 days straight (and finally 100). His insights during this time are remarkably profound, and touch not only on yoga but on spirituality and life itself. For example, this brief excerpt:“The room was quiet and I focused my attention on mybreath coming into my nostrils and out. As I did this, an ideafloated into my mind, ‘Discover the pose today.’ Then I thought,‘Discover life.’ How many times am I planning ahead? How many times am I dwelling on yesterday? How many times do I find myself in myhead? Yet when I give myself permission to discover life, orfor that matter discover the pose, I feel more present.”David Brown goes deeper into the philosophy of yoga with each passing day, with explorations into topics such as “BOA: breathe, observe, allow”; the value of practicing with eyes closed, “allowing the movement,” discovering the stillness within the pose, “allowing the breath to express the pose,” and seeing the breath as “the bridge between heaven and earth,” a form of spirit itself. And as he goes deeper into yoga, he goes ever more profoundly into the fundamental issues of life facing all of us, such as the nature of faith, the challenge and blessing of forgiveness, seeing our own inner beauty, finding peace, self-acceptance and living from the heart. He has a wonderfully simple technique for working with his emotions, a conscious way of examining what arises in himself, and changing unpleasant feelings into pleasant ones simply through enquiring into their source. This should be beneficial for everyone.I was fascinated to learn that some years earlier he had written a book, as yet unpublished, about his personal dialogues with the Mother Mary, in which she had told him, “David, let the practice be to contemplate your breath….The breath is the movement of God, it is answered prayer, it is meditation; words – no matter how beautiful they are can’t capture God.”And I love the realization he shares as he finished his 90th class: “Yoga is about realizing our oneness and that place is here. There is nothing to seek, search for, and look for, because it is all here on the mat.”This book offers us a highly accessible journey to healing, self-acceptance, and grounded spiritual wisdom. It left me feeling inspired and touched. Highly recommended!~ Matias Flury, author of “Spiritual Experiments”

Beautiful, Authentic, and Inspirational By Courtney 90 Days of Heat: Freedom Through Moksha by David Matthew BrownMy rating: 4 of 5 stars90 Days of Heat was a pleasure to read. It radiated genuine appreciation for, not only the practice of Moksha Yoga, but for the authentic beauty of life. David Matthew Brown allowed us to walk in step with him as he experienced a state of vulnerability and personal growth. His insight into his own heart space and into the purpose of life as a whole was nothing short of inspirational. His writing makes you feel like a close friend who he is sharing a very personal moment with. It is what fuels her ideas and inspires her to write the books she does. She loves to share what she knows and is always willing to learn something new. She loves to cook and create new recipes which you will find shared throughout her various cookbooks. She stays up to date on the most current diets but doesn’t particularly follow any one of them. She eats to enjoy while consciously watching her health. She knows people need a variety of recipes to avoid the boredom that leads to weight gain and tries to fill that void. Her passions don’t stop at cooking and she is an avid gardener, organizer and loves reading. She is known amongst the kids in the sports community as “the lady with the best chocolate chip cookies ever.” She enjoys being able to watch her children play sports and is quite active herself. So I had to get this one also. It's very interesting and well written also. It deals with specifically herbal remedies. It covers herbal remedies in alphabetic order which is very useful as a quick reference guide for your herbs and their specific usages as natural remedies. For each herbs, Wilson describes the herb, the benefits, and how to use it with in many case instructions on specific usages. I learned that my kitchen is full of remedies I barely knew before like rhubarb can help stop diarrhea, cleanse the colon, decrease bad cholesterol and help with upset stomach and indigestion. Highly recommended reading.

By Sherry Everett I've used herbal remedies for over 40 years, but the herbal kit I recently bought at the health food store to replace my overly-used kit had no book or booklet included with it. When I found this book, I thought, Oh, what a lifesaver. With Ms. Wilson's thorough Tables of Contents, I can go to the right page in less time than it takes to file a hangnail and read all about that particular herbal remedy. This book is a must-have for people interested in herbal remedies, and we all should be interested because they really work!

I knew that many plants could be used as natural remedies, but I did not know that there exists so many of them. My personal opinion is that this book would be better if it pointed out what are possible negative effects of those plants, but that doesn't reduce its quality and it surely deserves 5-stars.I learned how to prevent some health problems with usage of plants and how to avoid medicines with natural alternatives.

In a world seemingly intent on its terminal crisis, the weirdest things just happened to Brian Carver, as he creatively subverted a boring government job. Things like the dangerous embraces of Suzanna, his recruitment by Orgasmus, and involvement in the hottest product launch in history. Since mediaeval times, a continuing struggle of secret organisations has boiled beneath the surface of events. Now, it is computed, from all the social and economic data, that, unless man is saved by some unheard-of shift in his psyche, time, for the species, is fast running out. The enemies of Orgasmus, active in extreme groupings of the Left, and Right,, and in political and economic dynasties, have already loosed their assassins. The "Sword of God" has been unsheathed. As for Carver, suddenly a fugitive from police, MI5, and assorted fanatics, the joke is on him. He can never go back to his old life, if he survives at all.

LIZARDVILLE  Productions, publishers of John Gartland’s novel, Orgasmus, available in an e-edition from Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, share what other writers are saying , on Amazon,  about Orgasmus…KIRSTY TURNER, Travel writer and Journalist….. comments, on Amazon, about  Orgasmus“The plot will certainly keep you on your toes and sometimes leave you wondering; ‘did I really just read that?’ explosive stuff to be sure and a story to be savoured. This is a guilty pleasure with plenty of wit and class added to the mix".JOEY MADIA,  playwright, author, actor, and teacher of creative writing and theatre. Artistic Director/Resident Playwright of New Mystics Theatre Company and Resident Playwright, YouthStages, LLC. Founding editor of www.newmystics.com,says, about Orgasmus, on Amazon,  “…..deliciously twisted”“……Orgasmus is required reading. The back stories of characters like Peter Ignatius Gesto (the head of Far Out Travel) are entertaining and pull in a terrific mix of political history, pop culture, and spiritual philosophy.”"…. Fans of Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus Trilogy, William Burroughs, and David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest will not want to miss this book"T. HUNT LOCKE, author of the Declan Power and Sam Collins thrillers,  and a crime fiction aficionado,  writes, on Amazon, about  Orgasmus….“John Gartland first came to my attention through his exquisite poems, noir poetry, and his exhilarating reading that have become a part of the burgeoning art scene in Bangkok. John is a master. Which is why I picked this novel up with a sense of trepidation. Most people, artists especially, tend to excel in one thing only. But, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a fine novel. There are a bevy of characters that ooze with personality. Helen, you are to die for. The plot is well designed and when it drifts the wandering is at least amusing. John's poetry often has a political bite so it should come as no surprise that politics, or at least political history, comes into play here in this sexy far out novel. This novel is an erotic page-turner that will make you laugh and also think. Can't ask for more than that. Well done & highly recommended".

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a bored and seemingly un-remarkable British civil servant with a Literature ... By Joey Madia This wild, well-paced ride of a book, first published in 1986, was the debut novel from poet, playwright, and academic John Gartland. The novel centers around Brian J. Carver, a bored and seemingly un-remarkable British civil servant with a Literature degree (a rich tradition in storytelling that Gartland makes anew). His is a life spent shuffling papers, writing memos, and devoting as much time as possible to his writing endeavors on the government’s bill. The whole thing is thrown into motion (after a mysterious scene in Chapter 1 detailing various global gatherings and turmoil that later proves to be a flashback) when the Assistant Senior Inspector decides to transfer our man Carver to a new department, where he can “utilise his talents as a communicator” by “drawing up new forms, modifying old forms and dealing with correspondence about existing forms” (p. 25). Amid Carver’s settling in to his new position in the familiar atmosphere of paperwork purgatory (including a series of maneuvers to outwit his boss, Mr. Withers), events on the global scale are ramping up and the Zonex Corporation is introduced—offering a self-assembly clock designed by one of the most famous civil servants of them all—Albert Einstein. Zonex turns out to be wide-spread and all too insidious in its offerings, a fact we find out through the expansion of the cast of characters to include the button-down Howard Hooper (another struggling writer) and his sexually adventurous wife Helen, and the fetish-film porn auteur Don Varnier, who watches their kindky amorousness through his self-assembled Zonex binoculars and seeks out Helen for his films (he later directs a scene between two women in a bathtub full of broken eggs). Interested yet? It only gets more deliciously twisted from here, with the arrival of packages from “Far Out Travel” that pull together the various stories into a unified whole. [Turns out that mild-mannered Carver is a “member of a secret society of visionaries” (p. 85) going back to his college days]. He brings his best friend, Arthur (think Jeremy Pevin or Jon Favreau sidekick types) along for the ride. Carver’s involvement with a femme fatale named Suzanna is another lascivious layer of the mayhem. If you are a fan of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, or the Illuminatus trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson (or, dare I say, my own Minor Confessions of an Angel Falling Upward) then Orgasmus is required reading. The back stories of characters like Peter Ignatius Gesto (the head of Far Out Travel) are entertaining and pull in a terrific mix of political history, pop culture, and spiritual philosophy featuring those darlings of ancient and secret orders, the Knights Templar (they figure into non [semi?] fiction books I’ve been reading lately, such as Second Messiah, Hiram Key, and Secret Germany—the kind of stuff that sets writers like Dan Brown and Brad Meltzer—and myself—all alight with inspiration). My father and father-in-law, who were NCOs in Naval and Air Force intelligence, respectively, have always maintained that most governments are too stupid to engineer big conspiracies, but that still leaves room for the global banking cabals and their pseudo-governmental arms (Bilderberg, TLC, CFR, etc.)—the types of shadow government string-pullers “illuminated” by Conspiracy enthusiasts like David Icke and Alex Jones.Chapter 20 caused a scribbling-in-the-margins, highlighting frenzy for me, as Gartland really ramps things up on the way to Orgasmus’ explosive climax. Fans of Wilson’s Illuminatus writings will be in conspiracy-fiction Heaven here.Orgasmus (Organisation for Salvation of Mankind, Universal, Secret) is one of those good old-fashioned anarchist groups that were so fun to write about before 9/11, after which anything to do with terrorism and bombings became all but verboten. Still in all, despite the fact that I threw out my entire collection of Tom Clancy books on September 12, 2001, when that kind of fiction was no longer “fun,” Orgasmus is presented as tongue in cheek and a gentle reminder that we can (and should) still laugh at things like this.

By Purple Kay With Orgasmus, John Gartland takes you on a wild and rather risqué ride that is sure to stir the sense. The narrative style is so fresh and varied that time seems to melt away as you dive into the pages. The descriptions are so imaginative and often unexpected in their vivid detail that I often found myself turning back for another hit. The plot will certainly keep you on your toes and sometimes leave you wondering; ‘did I really just read that?’ explosive stuff to be sure and a story to be savoured. This is a guilty pleasure with plenty of wit and class added to the mix.
