By Valerie Ann Bruce Jacqueline Simon Gunn’s “In the Long Run: Reflections from the Road...” is all about endurance, training, and measures of fulfillment. When she becomes injured, stumbles, falls, or gets lost, the bottom line is—all the runners run. This book brings notions about spirit, creativeness, will, and limits. It battles becoming lost, endings, beginnings, and entering a zone that numbs the thought of infinity. Creative inspiration includes—but isn’t limited to—alternative uses for a bagel, literally swimming so as not to sink, and holding on to some kinds of pain for honor and remembrance. Since there are things in life that can’t be fixed, one’s got to find a way to deal with what’s broken. That’s why this author brings ideas about tools for managing life—as is. Quotes from C S Lewis, and Erich Fromm (and many others) gives motivational backdrop. What I’m personally left with, after reading “In the Long Run: Reflections from the Road...,” is to lay aside every weight and run with endurance; whatever the race is that's set before me. And I know that Jacqueline Simon Gunn will proceed to run in such a way as to get the prize she needs!

I found myself reflecting back to memories and milestones in my life that occurred while running and most of those memories were not running related! My take away from this book was that running is more of a “mental” activity for me rather than physical. I am able to think more clearly while running and my mind is often calmer at the end of a run. It was interesting to read how this author relates to this and that it can be a common sensation among runners.

It's filled with inspirational anecdotes about life, from overcoming the adversity of physical disability to simply not wanting to get out of bed in the morning and the things that can help motivate you. Jacqueline's breezy honesty makes the stories easy to read. This is a great book to keep around for when you need a little pick-me-up.

From an expert in medical social work, Susan Sheehan demonstrates her knowledge, strong faith, and deep commitment to care for her dying husband while battling hospital bureaucracy and protocols. She navigates us through the foreign landscape of medical terminology, through hospice and hospital habitats, and through her unique perspective as a loving wife, medical social worker and mother. We witness this frank tale of breathtaking love and regret through her eyes as she strives to relieve the pain and suffering of her husband alone. Though she is buttressed by family and friends, she prefers to spend last moments with her husband privately, savoring each heartbreaking moment with his presence, and then offering it up to us as a final gift of love and loss.

Helpful and enjoyable By Tim Yoder Losing a loved one is emotionally stressful (to say the least) even if it doesn’t involve navigating the US Healthcare system. Unfortunately, it often does, and I wouldn’t be able to anticipate, let alone prepare for, the complications surrounding end of life care. This book gave me the opportunity to do that. This author has both the professional and personal experience to make recommendations that are well informed and sympathetic. The book’s talking points encouraged me to consider and implement possible solutions and supports to sustain me when I have a dying family member. I don’t generally like thinking about these sorts of things, so her words are all the more valuable; they gently moved me towards these important conversations. In addition to that the book is thoroughly enjoyable. I found myself chuckling at times and tearing up quite bit at others, as if it were a novel. It is rare to find that a book that is both something I should read and something I will enjoy reading, but Dying Words fits that description.

Entering the Promised Land: Navigating Medical Barriers to Dying Well By KJ After taxes, the most certain thing in life is death and, short of that, dealing with the American health care system. Susan Sheehan’s book Dying Words, Talking Points for Mortals, takes on a subject most of us ignore. How do we go through death’s door with our loved ones? How do we navigate though the heath care system choices for a serious disease or condition – consistent with the wishes of patients and loved ones who may not want the patient to live at all costs. How do we die well?Sheehan tells the story from the perspective of a social worker hospice professional who is her husband’s (Dennis's) co-pilot through his last 10 days. Put aside the heavy subject matter, I could not put the book down. It is a compelling page-turner, and not just for those of us now entering our own life fourth quarters. We meet the Other Wife, the anonymous everywoman with whom Sheehan shares her health care deliberations and choices but who, unlike Sheehan, does not have the slightest clue how to navigate physicians, nurses and the health care system’s nuances (and even politics) that all affect the type of health care being delivered.Dennis has an incurable disease. In his last three years (he dies at age 52), the pain he experiences hour by hour goes from bad to intolerable. After a premature stay in a hospice, Dennis goes home but finally goes back to the hospital when Sheehan and he believe the end is near and Sheehan’s overriding objective is have him exit life with as little pain as humanly and medically possible. Nothing works.In Dennis’s last 10 days, the Sheehans navigate between well-meaning professionals with conflicting objectives of keeping Dennis breathing for as long as possible or facilitating a life-exit with less pain than his unrelenting, unbearable anguish. With full power of attorney and a DNR, Susan’s only wish is to ease his pain. But she runs into a medical ethics inquiry in which some physicians basically accuse her of seeking medically-assisted suicide.For the Other Wife and the rest of us, there are important lessons here. Understand your loved one’s disease. Understand his/her end of life wishes. Ask the hard questions – e.g. do you want to be intubated so that you can breathe with assistance or do you draw the line so that you can slip away with your dignity? Do you have friends and community around you so deal with what comes next, in Sheehan’s case widowhood?Susan’s and Dennis’s paths crossed ours some years ago but we did not know them well. After reading this story, which is in part a love story of their marriage & life, I wish we had known them so much better. There are uncanny parallels to our own lives and perhaps yours too (the book emphasizes their faith without being preachy). It also turns out that Dennis was a Springsteen junkie just like I am and that we both were into the last days of Johnny Cash (it’s not in the book, but Dennis’s wake featured his favorite Springsteen songs).After each encounter or medical decision, Sheehan provides a list of questions for the Other Wife and us. How would you deal with X medical choice? What if the health care profession does not understand your objectives? How do you navigate medical complexity through tears and impending grief? These are the practical questions that all of us will confront sooner or later. Dying Words, Talking Points for Mortals is a gripping read. Chuck Jackson

When I first saw "writer's block" I said, "oh no," but having read the novella cover to cover, I say "Lavid nails it!" Fiction writers will chuckle, (Yes, yes.), wince (how could she do that?), and nod (been there, done that), as Karen, the heroine (?) lands herself in terribly amusing (am I being callous?), right on target writer's block situations, gets herself wound up, stressed out, hung over, and brung down by her attempts to write and deal with her writing group members, James the witty philosophical poet and timid Lilly. And of course, there's Karen's mother. (No holds are barred with your mother when you've chosen to do something as whimsical as be a writer instead of, say a CPA).

Quaint Story By A Funny Girl I'm no stranger to the name Jenny Oliver, being a huge UK / Irish Chick-Lit fan, I'm always seeking out authors who can capture the same spirit as my beloved favs like Milly Johnson, Katie Fforde and Jill Mansell. While the very first Jenny Oliver book I read was less than engaging for me, it seems that each new book she releases, she's finding her voice and learning and getting better each time.In Dandelion Cafe, we are introduced to the wonderful Little village / town of Cherry Pie Island. Annie left the island long ago, hoping to prove to herself and her family that she could be a success. The Dandelion Cafe has been around for years. While her father has owned it for as long as Annie can remember, it was Enid who always ran the cafe. When her father died years ago, he the Dandelion Cafe was left to Annie, contingent upon Annie only taking over when Enid was no longer in charge. Well, the time has come.The Cafe has seen better days and while it doesn't make Annie happy, she is realistic and knows that there's no way the cafe can be viable and self-sustaining. She doesn't look forward to having to tell Wanda, Enid's daughter who is now running the cafe, that the cafe must close.Annie walks in the cafe with determination. Annie stuns even herself when she hears the words, "Let's see what happens" comes out of her mouth. Annie doesn't hold much hope, but she realizes that there are people who depend and rely on the cafe for a living.Overall, this was a really nice book. The characters were lovely, however there's something missing for me. I don't feel as if there is enough character development nor enough of a connection between the reader and characters. The writing is nice, and the story is ok, but nothing really just leaves me hanging on every word.I guess I'll see in the next Cherry Pie Island book if I feel differently.

By Michaela Devine Okay, honestly, first off, Jenny Oliver has some talent as a writer. Certainly she's better than a lot of chick lit and romance writers out there who are much more "mainstream" and she clearly has potential. The story is actually really cute, and Annie and her love interest Matt are both highly relatable and interesting, despite how quickly the book moves. It genuinely takes talent to make the reader feel like they have an actual human character instead of a bundle of cliches or a one dimensional cardboard figure, in less than 100 pages.Really though, speaking of it being less than 100 pages, the book was just too short! I feel like it was just starting to settle in and pick up when it ended kind of abruptly. I mean clearly this is a planned series, so maybe Oliver is attempting to leave a cliff hanger to keep you coming back for subsequent books, but it was just kind of off-putting. I really felt like I needed a little bit more to be fully committed and invested in this series. I was thoroughly enjoying the story and starting to get swept up in the magic and really liking down to earth Annie flirting with good-guy Matt when it just cut me off and ended. I'd also really love for some of the other characters to be more fleshed out, but with such a short novel, only the two main characters really got any attention as far as character development, which really hurts my emotional investment level. Also, side note, I HATE when novels cite specific examples of technology (in this case, WhatsApp and and an iPhone 6 not to mention several popular TV shows) because it dates the book and really makes it feel irrelevant after a few years.All that aside, it really is a charming and adorable little book. The plot moves fast, but quite a bit happens and the main characters at least are fleshed out and lovable. Her writing flows easily and isn't painful or stale, which is such a huge mark in this book's favor. I just needed a little bit more.http://littropez.blogspot.com/

The story is boring too. The author failed to create any likeable carachters. I couldn't have cared less about what happened to any if them. Avoid this one!

Edwin Hartill (1) names the principle, (2) defines it, (3) illustrates it, (4) provides notable quotes about the advantages gained by using it, and then (5) provides Biblical examples of how to apply it. The book's outline format does not require long, academic reading assignments. Instead, it encourages the student to practice the principles the book teaches by reading and studying the Biblical text. Both in an academic setting and within the Christian Education program of the local church, Hartill's book lends itself to courses in Bible Study Methods. Each principle links easily to a study skill, allowing the student to learn multiple skills simultaneously. For instance, by assigning a short word study along with practice in "the First Mention Principle," the teacher helps the student discover the authorial intent for the meaning of the word or concept, and then see it borne out through "the general teaching of the Scriptures."During a teaching trip, I once was asked to teach a Bible study for employees of a large corporation in Honolulu. None of the participants had any background in Bible Study methods, let alone a grasp of Biblical interpretation. So I recommended they get Hartill's book and use it as a study manual. Several years later I met one of those people at a seminar on the mainland. Some of the Bible Study participants had gone on to become teachers, and all had grown in their Christian walk. My friend attributed their growth to the principles they learned by studying the Bible using J. Edwin Hartill's book.

It had good information and its format made it easy to digest (outlines) without a lot of effort. With that said, I agree with other reviews I had read before purchasing that it appears the author does not apply his own methods. A number of analysis and applications in the text did not appear to follow good practices and therefore generated concerns about the validity of the author's conclusions. With that said, I believe in the sincerity of the author. However, I would more strongly recommend Henry Virkler and Karelynne Ayayo's text on Hermenuetics. It is a more scholarly work in my opinion and much more consistent in it's application.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Former Student of the Author By lookingup I was a student of Dr. Hartill's at Northwestern College in Roseville. While there I took many of his courses including Bible Survey, Hermeneutics, and Revelation. That was close to 40 years ago! The ONLY college textbook I still own and use is this one.We used to joke but it was true, that if you dropped your pencil you lost a page of notes. He told us regarding his book on Hermeneutics, if you want an 'A'- memorize the whole thing.I am not sure I totally agree with everything in his book today - and I don't know that he would either. As you study scripture, you continue to learn. One day after class I approached him regarding predestination in Romans. He was of one opinion, and I of another. I have since changed my mind on the subject! I keep studying the Bible and don't use modern commentaries (prefer the much older ones). However, this is a very good resource and I refer to it a few times a year.
