Another day, another dead body. It's all in a day of the life of Salem Grimes. Salem Grimes figures even a God who works in mysterious ways wouldn’t resort to a dead body in a dumpster in answer to Salem’s prayers to help her stay on her diet – excuse me – Strat-EAT-Gic plan. But a dead body in a dumpster it is, and now Salem and Viv, her octogenarian partner-in-crime-solving, are on the case once again. Salem finds the search for the killer a satisfactory distraction from all the things she needs distraction from – “dates” with the husband she hasn’t known for the past decade, growing jealousy of Viv’s friendship with Dale-the-Annoying-Hanger-On, and a mentor who says things that – okay, maybe Salem needs to hear, but she really doesn’t want to. As she seeks peace amidst praying prairie dogs and too much Chinese food, Salem struggles to disentangle what she believes from what she thinks she should believe, and – most frightening of all, the possibility that she might have to figure out for herself just where the truth lies. Oh, and avoid a murderer on the loose, if she can manage it.

She's human, she's flawed, she's trying to find her way in life with nothing more than a couple friends and her dog, Stump. Part of finding her way through life includes solving a murder. Although she and her best friend Viv aren't really detectives, they have a knack for sniffing out crime..accidentally and when they do, it's hilarious! I haven't laughed so hard over a book in a long time. Although the book was very funny, there's also a couple of discussions about moral issues that I believe the author handled beautifully. I really hope this series continues as Salem is one of those characters that stay with you.

Smith I loved the first book in this series - Trailer Park Princess and the Middle Finger of Fate - but this one was even better. The main character, Salem Grimes, has many flaws and is a struggling new Christian. She's also easy for the average person to identify with since she is not gorgeous, thin, or wealthy. There were many laugh out loud moments as well as thought-provoking conversations. The Christian message comes through in a very down to earth way & not at all preachy. I look forward to reading more from this author and, hopefully, more in the Trailer Park Princess series. That said....the version I read needs a few editing corrections. Not enough to make it difficult to read but enough to make you have to go back & read the previous page or two. There were a couple of sections where the character names mentioned didn't make sense with the rest of the scene. Also, God gave the 10 commandments to Moses, not Noah.

By patti After reading "Trailer Park Princess and the Middle Finger of Fate", I immediately downloaded this, the 2nd in the series, hoping it would be as good. It is, in fact, even better!Although I could write pages praising Kim Hunt Harris' writing, I'll focus on just a couple of main points. First, she has created a protagonist who is is "real" and very likable. Unlike the cardboard characters in many contemporary mysteries, Salem is an interesting young woman struggling to overcome her own personal demons (she is a recovering alcoholic, for example) and trying to make sense of her newfound faith and how Christian principals fit into contemporary culture. Salem is funny -- I laughed until I cried at several points in this book -- yet at the same time she will touch your heart. The plot is carefully crafted and believable. No unbelievable plot twists or ridiculous contrivances here! The mystery will keep your attention, the clues will not give away the ending but will all make sense in the end, and the mishaps Salem and her sidekicks find themselves in are realistic. When the element of homosexuality and hate crimes first came up in this book, I almost groaned. BUT I was amazed at how well Harris addressed these issues. Salem's struggle to understand what the Bible says about homosexuality and her confusion regarding how even in the Christian community there are various interpretations of what it says was explored in a way I have never seen in a fiction book. I was very, very impressed!!This is, in a nutshell, an outstanding book that will warm your heart, make you laugh and cry, and cause you to want to read more "Trailer Park Princess" books.

From the series that inspired the hit London Weekend Television sitcom Bless Me, Father: A touching series of escapades from the always-rowdy parish of St. Jude’s Located in West London, St. Jude’s parish traditionally serves the poor Irish immigrants of the area, and the grouchy Father Duddleswell is an ideal leader for the group. Joining him is the young Father Neil, who serves as an even-keeled aide during the many times Duddleswell finds himself in hot water.   This compendium of adventures is sure to delight fans of the series as St. Jude’s adds another member to its clergy: Father Abe, an octogenarian with an agenda of his own. The St. Jude’s staff finds themselves embroiled in a rivalry among undertakers, a visit during Holy Week from the bishop with the longest rosary on record, a harebrained scheme to promote holy water as a fertility enhancer, and a night spent under a pool table during a pilgrimage.   Equal parts funny, sweet, and moving, Father Under Fire is a touching portrait of London in the early 1950s.

O'Malley Father Under Fire is a hilarious book about life in a 1950's Roman Catholic Parish in England. The characters are warm and easy to love. The stories are very descriptive and vivid. You will feel as though you are there in the rectory of the parish of St. Jude. After I read the first story I could not put the book down. I cannot wait to read the other books in the series. It is truly one of my favorite books.I wish the book would be brought back into print. It is truly a shame to have this wonderful book overlooked.

By David Zampino . . .to Neil Boyd's "Bless Me, Father" series. In this volume, we are treated to a new character, the cigar smoking, horse-playing (yet truly and tenderly devout) Fr. Abe. So in addition to the adventures and misadventures of Fr. Neil, Fr. Duddleswell, Mrs. Pring, and company, when Fr. Abe comes to stay -- look out (for your funny bone!)Like "Father in a Fix", not all the anecdotes related here are funny. Some are moving, and a few are downright tragic. Through it all, the humanity of "Fr. Neil"'s early days as a priest shine through.A very enjoyable read.

Some more magic By Great Silence Less funny than the first book in the series (although the section on the confessions taken from the children is worth the price in laughs alone) but still as nostalgic, poignant and inspiring as ever. Do yourself a favor and read at least one in the series, regardless of your religion, or lack thereof. The generosity, compassion and sheer humanity of these little skits are true little treasures.

Matichuk In Adapt or Die: Battle-Tested Principles for Leaders, retired Lieutenant General Rick Lynch shares the wisdom he learned as a decorated officer and leader in the US Army. A graduate of West Point, with a Masters Degree from M.I.T., Lynch has had a distinguished career where he served in leadership in various capacities. Adapt or Die shares what he learned as he pursued excellence in leadership.Adapt or DieThis book is a 'success memoir.' Lynch talks about moments he felt like quitting but didn't (like at West Point or MIT), his superior work ethic, the things he learned from good mentors (and a few bad leaders), how he responded to people's needs and concerns, the ways he implemented new technology, the way he crafted a 'family first culture,' and the role of his faith in his leadership. Lynch is vulnerable about where he struggled to control his anger, his sometimes faulting attempts at availability, and his desire to lead in ways that reflected his faith. He also talks about difficult and defining moments in his career (i.e. new roles, and new situations, losing soldiers under his charge, etc). But for the most part, this book is about wisdom hard-won throughout his illustrious military career. This is a quick read with some good insights. Some of the chapters are punctuated by 'Lynch's Leadership Principles' (which are also collected in an appendix. Because Lynch is a Christian, he also shares Bible verses that inspire his leadership and shares some of his faith journey.Personally I didn't resonate with Lynch's leadership sloganeering and have issues with the shallow way he appropriates scripture. Yet he was a successful military officer with a wealth of leadership experience. Most of it is of the variety of work-hard- don't-quit-and-treat-people-right variety. All good stuff. Lynch executed leadership well, but don't expect new insights. I give this three and a half stars.Note: I received this book from Baker Books in exchange for my Honest review

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this will be a useful book to many because Lynch seeks to summarize principles ... By 221bwhite Adapt or Die: Battle Tested Principles for LeadersRick Lynch is a retired Lt. General and has led in most levels of the U.S. Army. On page 108, in his book Adapt or Die, Lynch writes: “When it comes to keeping my organizations focused, the three questions I ask all the time are:Are we doing the right things? Are we doing things right? What are we missing?”The chapters are short, memorable, and digestable. For this reason, this will be a useful book to many because Lynch seeks to summarize principles and principles are worth reviewing often. I found the book easy to read and refreshingly honest. Lynch didn’t climb the ladder without challenges and on pg. 129, he speaks to various ways that could increase morale within an organization and surprisingly lands on helping people prioritize their family. While he references communication and benefits, like paid time off, what he focuses in on is creating space for his employees or those under his command to be better husbands, dads, wives, and moms. Each chapter ends with a pithy saying or principle and this can be read quickly or slowly and re-read as one reviews the principles. I particularly gleaned from his insights on communication and on dealing with scarce resources. I like his phrase ‘Do Less Better’ and will likely recommend this book to men and women who prefer to get things done than construct a philosophy about getting things done.(Disclosure: I received this book free from Baker Books through the Baker Books Bloggers www.bakerbooks.com/bakerbooksbloggers program. If you want to lead, where do you start? How do you become a leader? There are many examples throughout history of people who were good at being leaders. They share similar characteristics and principles. In Adapt or Die Lt. Gen. (RET) Rick Lynch shares some of these principles. The book is very straightforward and engaging. It is divided up into four general sections with each section having more in depth chapters. What I really appreciated about the book is that he gives the advice and shares stories from his life where he heeded his own advice. In other words he walked the talk which is something he writes about throughout the book. I enjoyed the stories because they personalized the message.I was not expecting it to be his stories intertwined with the principles. I had thought that there would be guides for how integrate these principles better and was surprised when I didn’t find any. However, I think this is good because it then forces the reader to examine their own lives. It should be self evident if we are following the principles or not. The principles are not rocket science. There doesn’t need to be a series of steps to attain them. It is simply whether or not we will accept these principles and act on them.If you want to be a better leader, this would be a good book to read.Disclaimer: I received this book free from Baker Books through the Baker Books Bloggers program in exchange for an honest review.

Since I've gotten this hcsb journaling bible my life has literally changed. I love reading it, taking notes, highlighting... I know more about the scriptures than ever before. One thing to be aware of, there are no cross reference verses on the pages like most Bibles. However, for me it has forced me to look at my kjv or online bibles for reference, and I also noticed this version is very accurate with kjv and all the other main versions. I love the way hcsb is written, very literal but easy to read. This journaling bible is single column which makes it even easier to study, for me anyway. I love this journaling bible, and would recommend it to everyone. I don't even know what else to say.....I guess one down side is that even the "bible" highlighters bleed through, but that's every bible I've ever had. My wife also bought a Journaling bible, esv version, and has the same problem.So.... 5 stars, this bible saved my soul ;) Love it!

As such, anybody can, at any point in time, pick up their phone or tablet and read God’s Word. There are many apps that give quick and easy access to Scripture Reading Plans, Devotionals, Study Tools, and so much more. YouVersion, Oliver Tree, Logos…the list goes on. God’s Word. Right there. Just a few clicks away.Personally, I find reading the scriptures in this way simple. I can have notifications pop-up on my iphone every morning, reminding me what passage to read for the day. I can have my daily reading sent directly to my email inbox. And I can quickly and easily keep track of where I am in a reading plan. However, in my own personal reading times, I’ve began to notice a disturbing trend by reading or studying in this manner. I’ll come across a scripture passage that I previously highlighted, and have no real idea why I highlighted it in the first place. Sometimes I’ll recognize a note that I wrote (or typed) for a specific passage, but the study note makes no sense to me. “That’s fascinating,” I’ll think to myself. “But I have no idea why or how that information is useful for me right now.” It becomes quite clear that I didn’t include enough detail as to why I wrote it to begin with!Due to this, I’ve been re-working how I’ve chosen to read and study God’s Word. I will often read a passage, sometimes on my phone or iPad, or sometimes I’ll grab my HCSB or NLT Study Bible, and then I’ll take the opportunity to journal out some thoughts on what I’ve read. I often use a real notebook. Actual pen and paper. Crazy, right?Well this week I received something that may help in this regard. The HCSB Journaling Bible. The HCSB has been one of my go-to Bible translations since it was first released. I won’t say it’s the best translation on the market. I will simply say that the best Bible translation is the one you’re reading. But the HCSB is a very good translation. If you’re unfamiliar with it’s origins, you can read more about it online. But what I really want to focus on today isn’t the translation, but the Journaling Bible as a whole.Size:The HCSB Journaling Bible isn't as large as the Study Bibles I have on my bookshelf, but it's a little thicker than I originally expected it to be. Nevertheless, it's not at all overbearing.Font:The Font of the HCSB Study Bible is 8 pt. It feels a little smaller than what I’m used to. I used the HCSB Ultrathin Large Print Bible for many years, and became very accustomed to the 10 pt. font it uses. However, I haven’t yet felt any strain on my eyes when reading through the Journaling Bible.Cover:The cover of the Journaling Bible is technically considered Bonded Leather. In my opinion, the cover looks and feels like the cover a journal. It’s not overly feminine (something important for men when considering a Bible), and it’s sturdy enough to stand on a shelf without needing additional support on either side. Personally, I would prefer a softer cover like my leather-bound Study Bibles, but that’s really just a matter of preference.Features:The primary feature of the HCSB Journaling Bible is the ability to take notes or write “journal” entries on the side of each page. There are no cross references. No Greek/Hebrew word studies. No study notes. And no introductions for each book. It’s God’s Word, and your notes on what He has to say.The back of the Bible has a few extra features as well. It includes HCSB Bullet Notes, a 52-week Scripture Reading plan, a concordance, and a few maps of ancient Israel. How to Use It:Everybody reads and studies God’s Word differently. For example, years ago I was encouraged to color a Bible in order to see specific themes throughout the text. Yellow = Glory of God, His Person / Character / Attributes Green = Grace of God and Gospel verses Red = Blood, Death, Suffering Blue = Direct Statement or Command from God Light Blue = Person and Work of the Holy Spirit Brown = Judgment, Punishment, Sin, Temptation Purple = Prayer, Promises Orange = Word of GodUsing this system, I colored a good bit of the New Testament. However, I found this system to not keep me engaged long-term. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a viable reading/study method. I know people who have used this method every year for over 20 years! But it wasn’t how I best study. With the HCSB Jouraling Bible, I took time to think through how to best use it. I concluded that I wanted to keep my notes broken down into just 4-5 categories: Study Note – Summary of the passage, or other useful info. Journal Note – How to apply the passage, or a note on the character of God. Personal Prayer Question & Answer – Question about a passage or a term in the passage, and then a brief answer included after doing a bit of research.Page Thickness:Having been journaling in a notebook for quite some time, I wanted to test the durability of my writing on the pages. While the pages of the journaling Bible are thin (you can see the bleed-through of my writing on the back-side of the page), it wasn’t unbearable. Choosing a good pen that maintains a light touch on the page will prove beneficial to those using it long term.Who is it for?The HCSB Journaling Bible is for anyone who is looking for a Bible they can use to read as well as write their own journal notes in. I believe it would be useful for both men and women who are not looking for detailed study notes, but who simply want to read God’s Word and answer questions such as, “What is God inviting me to do?” or “What is the key principle God is communicating in this passage?”While a number of apps are available today to read the Scriptures, the HCSB Journaling Bible does not give you the option to quickly transition to your email or other apps. In other words, you’re not going to be distracted by receiving a text message, but will instead stay focused on the Scriptures until you’re finished reading and writing. In today’s busy world, that’s enough of a selling point for me.Final Verdict:I would rate the HCSB Journaling Bible a solid 8.5/10. The cover is sturdy and durable, and as noted above, the HCSB is a very good translation of the Scriptures. The look and feel should be attractive to both men and women, which I see as a plus.In full disclosure, I received a free review copy of the HCSB Journaling Bible from Broadman & Holman Publishers. Nevertheless, I intend to use it regularly and will update this review if any of my opinions change in due time.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Lined and wide margins are perfect! By Rachel Wojnarowski I love this Journaling Bible!! The margins are nice and wide for note-taking or a little creative art journaling. Having printed lines in the margin is a great asset to me, as some other journaling Bibles have no lines and just space. I have typically used KJV or ESV for most of my studying and the HCSB has been very enjoyable for meditating and praying the Scriptures back to God. Love this Bible and have recommended it to so many others!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. dissapointing, like most Kindle books I've tried By Earthstone There are no picturss with the herb descriptions and nothing about what the plants contain chemically that works. It is a very, very elementary overview of herbal medicine and a waste of time for anyone who knows anything about herbs and their uses! "Ultimate" is not a good description for it. Reading on Kindle is way too slow as I can read faster than the pages turn. I find Kindle books to all be useless for use as reference books because in order to use them, it takes way longer than looking something up in a real book. The ONLY reason I ever get them is they are most always free or very cheap.

Wildish: A Story Concerning Different Kinds of Love, by Robert Stephen Parry

Review 'Wildish is Robert Parry's third, and best novel. Hefty, descriptive, brilliant, and elegant ... with witty repartee, delicious and sumptuous characters, vivid and palpable surroundings. Each scenario is fleshed out with reverence and respect ... teasing his readers to remain fixated until the end.' Claudia Robinson - 'Luxury Reading''I savored every word of this wonderful book. The story is perfectly balanced with intrigue, humor, excitement, and mystery ... a personal quest for discovering love, not just any love, but love that transcends reality.' Charla Wilson - 'Book Talk with Charla.''Set in 1745 during the Jacobean uprising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Wildish is a big novel that goes by in a heartbeat ... filled with lust, bravery, honour, hope and as many different kinds of love as there are colours in the rainbow.'Kirsty Stonell Walker - 'The Kissed Mouth.''If you're looking for an involved, yet humorous read, with a bit of adventure and eccentricity mixed in, this novel will satisfy. I really enjoyed it!' Arleigh Johnson, historical-Fiction.com

By Lily's Mum Set in 1745 during the Jacobean uprising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, it centers on Matthew Wildish, a poet and Master Wig Maker who has an aspiration to fly. Not in the conventional sense, you understand, but in a rather more ground-based, metaphoric manner which involves a sonnet series and heavenly bodies. Added to this is the approaching spectrum of war which might destroy the comfortable, libidinous lifestyle that Mr Wildish has endeavored to secure for himself, and the terrible realization that after all, he might be in love. It's no coincidence that Mr Wildish also makes masks for use at masquerades, as hiding and pretence are themes of the book. The Jacobite rebels that march towards London are led by `The Young Pretender' and Mr Wildish himself is pretending to be merely a dissolute libertine when he continues to curtail his seductions with acts of kindness and bravery. The charm and appeal of Wildish is that the central character is a good person, albeit hidden inside a reckless saucepot. In order to follow him through almost 600 pages of his life, you need to feel able to invest and Matthew Wildish is definitely worthy of your time. He is a marvelous, mixed-up man, who is brave enough to risk his life in order to infiltrate a brutal army of rebels, but feels powerless in the face of a determined woman. The things I love the most about Wildish are the contrasts. The descriptions of the excesses of London are personified in characters such as Lucy Armstrong, who is a gorgeously presented woman, Matthew's `Sun', whose business is pleasure of all types. Against this are the passages regarding life in the Jacobite army, desperate yet determined, driven on through all manner of dehumanizing plights by the claim of a beautiful young man who would be King. The continued themes of escape and survival threads through the book, from `the man who would fly' in the opening chapter, to Matthew's dealings with Lady Snatchal, then the rather more serious affairs of war, dealing with those that live and the fate of those at Culloden. Just as Mr Parry never stints on the romance, he also reports war in the most certain terms for the visceral sack of nasty it is.I was surprised by a couple of things when reading Wildish. Firstly, it is a very funny book. I didn't expect to laugh so much and one of my favorite quotes has to be:`Expired in the arms of a whore; lying all cold in that horrid place while I have been here listening to a hornpipe with a man under my skirts. I am so ashamed!'Thank you Mr Parry for the amount of snorty-sniggering I did at that. The other thing I didn't expect was just how saucy it was. In an age when I roll my eyes at the books on display in the supermarket, it was a pleasure to read something that reminded me of some of the naughtier 18th century novels I have read. I giggled, blushed and learnt something, which is how it should be.To sum up, Wildish is a big novel that goes by in a heartbeat. You feel investment in the characters, even the less obvious ones touch your heart with their victories and tragedies. The humor of it all highlights how damn cruel life can be at times, and how the most wicked actions betray a desire for hope. Robert Parry has done the unthinkable in my mind, which is to surpass The Arrow Chest with a hefty romp filled with lust, bravery, honor, hope and as many different kinds of love as there are colors in the rainbow.

It is very easy to dive into a story when you know the author knows the subject that they are writing about. This book was a lot of fun to read, and I would highly recommend it to others who enjoy a little bit of history, a few twists and turns, and romance all in one. Be prepared to blush a little & even let out some laughter. Even though the book is quite long, it is an easy read. Cheers Robert! :)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A perfect delight! By Trish M I greatly enjoyed this book! Matthew Wildish is a carefree, easy going spirit who enjoys life to the fullest. I became so engrossed in the story that I was sad when I finished it! It was so magical and beautifully written. I found myself laughing out loud in places and in tears in others. I have read two other books by Robert and enjoyed them all, but this is by far my favorite.

By Ruty@ReadingDreaming I'm sure that if the original book was as funny and sarcastic as this parody, I would have not only read it but also I would have loved it.Shady Miss Grey is fast, well written and the characters are hilarious. Andy is simple but entertaining (his problem with fast "release" but funny, don't blame me I have a twisted sense of humor). The story is told from a first person POV which makes it really funny. The thing I liked the most was that the dominant part was the woman. Miss Grey is kind of crazy if you ask me. Her torture chamber was a really good choice and I love her method of torture. If you are looking for a fast humorous ride you should try this one.*** I received a complimentary copy in exchange of an honest review. ***

They said Cuthbert would never make Act II, but ... Last time around, Cuthbert was up against thieves infiltrating the Valley, planning to steal William Shakespeare's first - and, well, worst - works. This time it is the forces of global exploitation and Big Business who have decided to march into lush pastures and by-waters nobody knew existed, even their inhabitants, and turn them into an out-of-town shopping centre and cinema multiplex. Yes, folks, it is Cuthbert - one-time farmer, theatre impressario, and many-times undertaker - against the World, and somebody or something is going to get buried, under concrete or otherwise. The Valley is under threat. Will the Valley rise again and become a mountain, or will the locals take it all sitting down, eat popcorn, and watch 'Die Messy 4'? Book #2 in the Cuthbert Series

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious developments in the Valley By G. McCullough Readers of Patrick Barrett's first book Shakespeare's Cuthbert must have thought they'd never read anything funnier. But Mr. Barrett has done it again and has his readers laughing out loud even more.Percy the gardener is woken up by the bulldozers. What's going on? Why, the site of the former Hall, now burnt down, has been bought by a chain of supermarkets - and poor Percy finds that the shed where he lives is in line to be demolished as the site is prepared for building. Luckily he can move in with his good friend Cuthbert. But Cuthbert is due to receive an even bigger shock than Percy. For the owner of the supermarket turns out to be a beautiful red haired lady in a mobile scooter who just happens to be Cuthbert's aunt Liza! The obvious portrait of Paula Barrett, Patrick's wife, is amusing and delightful. But that's only one of the jokes in store. This book is not only full of one-liners, but also has a very funny plot. The action as well as the words keeps us in a continual state of amusement. The characters are funny, realistic in spite of the way they behave, and a real pleasure to be with. This is a book which you won't want to put down until you've finished it.Warmly recommended.

Douglas Adams and then some By barbara silkstone With the rhythm and patter of Douglas Adams, Patrick Barrett strikes again in the persona of Cuthbert. What can one say about the lovable, sharply satirical, and oh-so-droll, Cuthbert's world? Much more subtle than Monty Python, more clever Arthur Dent... I laughed until I cried. The portrait of Paula Barrett, Patrick's wife, is a delight. She must share his demented, very clever humor... thank goodness! There are times I found myself re-reading and savoring lines for the pure fun of the quirky twists."These women, he thought, once they fell for you, they could beguile you in an instant."They don't get any funnier than Patrick Barrett. Highly recommended.

Light-hearted and compassionate By Sunset44 As in the first of the Cuthbert series, the endearingly portrayed Percy and Cuthbert never failed to engage. The description is very individual to the author, refreshing to read. I particularly liked it when"Percy collapsed on his knees, panting like a ruptured steam boiler".And yet, despite the light side of the characters, there is always the presence of an underlying compassion between them, warts 'n all. In places I thought Percy comical but he can be hurt, he can sulk, like a human, and Cuthbert understands. The character's belief that William Shakespeare had "...worked at Mandrake Hall as a teacher" both tickled me and whetted my appetite to see how the rest of the storyline would unfold.

Fought in the winter of 1944-1945, the coldest season in over 100 years, the Battle of the Bulge still ranks as the single largest battle ever fought by the United States Army. Thirty-one American divisions - fully one-third of the U.S. Army raised during World War II - saw action in this battle. This battle was truly a test: could this conscript army from a pacifistic democracy defeat the best remaining men and machines that Germany's totalitarian government could produce? In "Battle of the Bulge," author and artist Wayne Vansant brings readers into the frozen foxholes, haunting forests, and devastated villages of the Ardennes during that freezing cold winter. With meticulous historical accuracy and hand-drawn visuals that can tell a story in ways words alone cannot, Vansant recounts the Bulge with insightful detail, replaying the thrusts and volleys of both the combined Allied and German forces during the tumultuous battle. This is a story of panic, fear, and physical misery; a story of how a generation of draftees, National Guardsmen, and a small core of regular officers and NCOs faced those three elements as snow piled around their foxholes and the incessant drumming of artillery splintered the woods that gave them shelter. It is the story of men, frozen and hurting, far from home and holding little hope of seeing it again until the killing finally ended. Above all, "The""Battle of the Bulge" is a story of incredible triumph, now beautifully illustrated in graphic novel format for the first time.

Battle of the Bulge: A Graphic History of Allied Victory in the Ardennes, 1944-1945 (Graphic Histories), by Wayne Vansant

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—The creator of the Normandy (2012), Bombing Nazi Germany (2013), and The Red Baron (2014, all Zenith) graphic novels, now addresses the major battle that led to Germany's surrender. The photo-realistic and full-color illustrations—Dwight D. Eisenhower, Adolf Hitler, and other major players are authentically captured—add gravity. This work is factual and mostly neutral, not going into the reasons behind the war, only the military strategies employed by each side. Though the book lacks a time line, the maps and detailed descriptions of the tanks used are a nice feature. A useful resource in exploring this historic battle and a fine edition to classrooms as well as libraries. Purchase of the previous titles is recommended for a complete look at the war.—Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

Review

"In this sixth military-themed graphic novel for Zenith, Vansant ("The Red Baron") literally sketches out an introductory work on one of the most important battles of World War II. He proceeds in a mostly chronological manner, beginning with Hitler's concept for the offensive named "Watch on the Rhine" in September 1944 through the official end of the fight on January 16, 1945. His narrative is broad, ranging from policy decisions at the strategic level and movements of particular units down to actions of small groups or individuals. He mentions atrocities on both sides. The book provides a series of maps that help give a sense of where distinct actions occurred in relation to one another. Verdict This book could serve as a useful introduction to the battle for adult or teen readers." "- Library Journal"

""The Battle of the Bulge" may be his best yet. He ramps up the tension found in his previous books another notch or two in this one, and I found myself turning pages even when my eyes were saying, "Turn off that lamp and go to sleep...". a well-researched narrative that is extremely engaging while still communicating the horrors and the sacrifices that were the Battle of the Bulge. Highly recommended." - "Armchair General"

Great way to engage kids in World War II history By Amazon Customer I am a member of the World War II History Network and a World War II Researcher and Author. From from time to time, the World War II History Network has book giveaways. I received this book from one giveaway. This book appealed to me for a couple of reasons. First, my cousin died on 11 January 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge. Second, because I have boys who love to read and learn about World War II. I thought a graphic history would be another way to engage them and keep discussion going.I don't read graphic novels or histories. It isn't my thing, but this book is cool, different from my usual books and I'm glad I chose to read it. Vansant introduces the reader to the events which took place throughout the battle and to the leaders and specific people involved who we may read about in adult history books about the battle. His illustrations are sometimes graphic (as in blood on the wounded and dead) and give the reader a sense of what the individuals in each frame felt and thought through facial expressions and text. The book also includes maps to help the reader understand what has taken place and where the troops are headed next. One of the best parts of this book is in the appendix. I personally always flip to the back of a history book first to see if there are sources, notes, a bibliography, and index. Vansant's book contains an appendix filled with lists of the US, British, and German Divisions which participated in the Bulge. Kids can use this as a reference to learn more about specific units, especially if they had a family member who served in one. Drawings and information on tanks used in battle are provided. And, there is a page of additional reading provided.I recommend this book to anyone who loves graphic novels and history, to kids who enjoy learning about World War II, and adults who want something new to read.

By Kindle Customer I am quickly learning that Wayne Vansant is a talented author and illustrator who has taken on so many important historical topics through his graphic novels. After reading (nee, carefully studying each panel) of Vansant's "Battle of the Bulge," I have discovered a new format for communicating the facts of history. This will not be my last Vansant telling of history through graphic novels, and I look forward to his "Normandy" and "Bombing Nazi Germany" volumes.

Kirby Amazon Customer When I was a kid, like all the other kids, I read and even traded comic books...but, I guess the history teacher was already developong inside me...I started to collect more and trade less...and not Archie or Micky Mouse comics were the ones I saved. I kept the history related ones, especially WW I, II, and Korea. GI Combat, Our Army At War, and so on were the ones. My pals were the crew of the Haunted Tank, Gunner and Sarge, Sargeant Rock and the rest of the gang. There were two series of comic books that I knew of then, in the 1950s that were the ancestors of the graphic novels of today. I cannot remember the publishers of both, but one was DELL. They both employed an artist named Sam Glantzman, a WWII veteran himself. His art was super detailed and accurate. Wayne Vansant carries on the tradition. Other reviewers have mostly praised the series of "Graphic Novel History books" he is creating. I agree with their positive comments 100 %. I can really find nothing in the works to criticize, and I notice younger kids are reading these too...not a bad situation, given the fact that the non-educators who drive American education are cutting back on a lot of US history, as well as material in all subjects. If this will get the young adults to learn and question events in history, all the better! Again, I cannot recommend these any more positively. I hope Mr. Vansant has a long list of future volumes as well done as those so far. Many thanks to Amazon for making them available, and they arrived in perfect condition .
