Perfectly charming By dragon lady While walking to his bookshop one morning, Laurent Letellier notices a nice lady’s handbag perched on top of a trash bin. Suspecting the rightful owner may have been mugged, Laurent takes the purse with him with the idea of returning it. Careful examination of the contents revealed several little treasures including a small red notebook of her observations, all of which told a bit about the woman but no clues about her identity. At his daughter’s urging, Laurent follows the few leads he has and just when he hits a dead end, a chance encounter not only unlocks the mystery but also draws him deeper into a stranger’s life. Although he would love to actually meet Laure, the woman who owns the purse, Laurent feels he has trespassed beyond all polite boundaries and chooses to remain anonymous. It will take some creative meddling to bring these two prospective lovers together.Set in France and translated from French, this charming light read draws readers in as Laurent’s warm, caring nature carries him through the Parisian streets searching for a complete stranger. There is just enough family history and backstory to add credibility to this sweet melding of mystery and romance that concludes on a satisfyingly upbeat note.

By Page 45 I was in love with him and on page 132 I cried By Postcard Reviews This delightful tale starts when Laure is mugged on her doorstep for her handbag.By page 15 I decided that I wanted to live where Laurent lives. By Page 45 I was in love with him and on page 132 I cried. The Red Notebook is by far the best novel I have read all year and deserves more of an accolade than I can give to it.It is a story full of characters who became ‘my friends’ and whose lives are rich and full of depth. And Laure herself is beautiful. If I could live in ‘bookworld’ I would live in this one. It is a story that has everything I love, romance, books, cats and I could just Gush Gush Gush.I admit this isn’t like the usual review I write but The Red Notebook is a book like no other. My only regret is that I have read it, I would like to go back in time and re-read, not knowing how fabulous this book is and that I have the best couple of reading hours ahead of me.A definite MUST READ for everyone.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Charming By Diane M. Davidson I loved The President's Hat by the same author, and was a bit worried whether this one would measure up. It does. A woman (Laure) is the victim of a violent purse-snatching. She stays at a hotel, but during the night develops a subdural hematoma and goes into a coma. Meanwhile, a bookseller (Laurent) finds Laure's bag, minus its money, phone, and any obvious identifying features. He uses clues and deductions to find Laure's flat, where he is unexpectedly entrusted with taking care of her cat (who adores him). He is afraid, though, once Laure comes out of the coma, to introduce himself to her. Delightful developments ensue, as Laure seeks Laurent. Highly recommended.

If your organization is about to enter the world of big data, you not only need to decide whether Apache Hadoop is the right platform to use, but also which of its many components are best suited to your task. This field guide makes the exercise manageable by breaking down the Hadoop ecosystem into short, digestible sections. You’ll quickly understand how Hadoop’s projects, subprojects, and related technologies work together.

Each chapter introduces a different topic—such as core technologies or data transfer—and explains why certain components may or may not be useful for particular needs. When it comes to data, Hadoop is a whole new ballgame, but with this handy reference, you’ll have a good grasp of the playing field.

Topics include:

  • Core technologies—Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), MapReduce, YARN, and Spark
  • Database and data management—Cassandra, HBase, MongoDB, and Hive
  • Serialization—Avro, JSON, and Parquet
  • Management and monitoring—Puppet, Chef, Zookeeper, and Oozie
  • Analytic helpers—Pig, Mahout, and MLLib
  • Data transfer—Scoop, Flume, distcp, and Storm
  • Security, access control, auditing—Sentry, Kerberos, and Knox
  • Cloud computing and virtualization—Serengeti, Docker, and Whirr

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy this book By Alexis C. Whether you are familiar or not with Hadoop, you will learn nothing. In one case, you already know (hopefully more than) what is presented in that book, or you won't understand anything since it doesn't even explain the basics. The book involves many excuses such that :"Although an explanation is beyond the scope of this book ...""Writing Mapreduce can be fairly complicated and is beyond the scope of this book""The truth is that writing applications in YARN is still very involved and too deep for this book...""Good example code is a bit long and complex to include here but ..."Anyway .. in the end you wonder if the authors themselves know what they are talking about.Check out wikipedia's page of the technologies touched on by this book, you'll save money (I can't believe I spent 36$ on this) and time.

Short but useful introduction to most components of Hadoop ecosystem By Pouria Amirian Big data is over-hyped topic and Hadoop is tightly coupled with Big Data. Hadoop ecosystem is composed of many components and many of these components need good knowledge of programming (in Java or python or SQL or Scala). There are a few good books about most components. But there is no book that gives a thirty thousand feet overview of many components in Hadoop ecosystem in short and approachable way.As it clearly mentioned in its preface, this book is a short but useful introduction to most components of Hadoop ecosystem. It is useful for programmers, data scientists and managers new to Hadoop world. The book explains many of most important components of the Hadoop ecosystem in about 100 pages. I recommend this book to new comers to Hadoop world. There are some sample code inside the book, but I don’t think that authors expect the readers to use those code snippets. However, code samples give readers a feeling of model of coding for most of components.Managers who want to know technical details briefly benefit a lot from this book. It is important to know that Hadoop is open source but in order to use Hadoop in production environments most (read all) organizations need commercial support; that is why using open source software doesn't prevent vendor lock in!I was surprised that authors didn't include some important components like Impala but covered HIPI and SpatialHadoop!! In addition it is a good idea to provide details about Hadoop distributions and cloud-based deployment. In summary authors did a great job!

Get the current state of Hadoop's components By Ian Stirk Hi,I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title. This slim book sets out to provide an up-to-date overview of Hadoop and its various components, which seems a worthwhile aim.Hadoop is the most common platform for storing and analysing big data. This book aims to be a short introduction to Hadoop and its various components. The authors compare this to a field guide for birds or trees, so it is broad in scope and shallow in depth. Each chapter briefly covers an area of Hadoop technology, and outlines the major players. The book is not a tutorial, but a high-level overview, consisting of 132 pages in 8 chapters. For each component, details are listed for:* License – much is open source but there may be some conditions* Activity – how much development work is being done on the product* Purpose – what the technology does Official Page – home page of the technology* Hadoop Integration – the technology’s level of integration with HadoopBelow is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.Chapter 1 Core TechnologiesThe chapter opens with a bit of history. The origins of Hadoop can be traced back to a project called Nutch, which stored large amounts of data, together with 2 seminal papers from Google – one relating to the Google File System, and the other about a distributed programming model called MapReduce. The ideas in the papers were incorporated into the Nutch project, and Hadoop was born. Yahoo! began using Hadoop for its search engine, and now Hadoop is the premier platform for processing big data.Hadoop consists of 3 primary resources:* Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) – where you store data. This is optimized for high performance, is read-intensive, and provides resilience by holding multiple copies of the data on different machines. A large block size optimizes data movement.* MapReduce – involves 2 components: mappers that analyze chunks of data, and reducers which aggregate the results of the mappers.* Hadoop’s tools – other components, as described in this bookThis was an interesting chapter, laying the groundwork for the rest of the book, identifying what Hadoop is, its major components, and how they work. Helpful links to tutorial information are provided, together with outline code examples (as they are throughout the book).Perhaps some emphasis could have been given to describing the attributes of big data (i.e. volume, velocity and variety) that require a system like Hadoop to process it. I’m not sure why Spark was included in this core section....ConclusionThis book is very broad in scope, and by necessity (since it’s a field guide), shallow in depth. It provides up-to-date but limited detail on the major components of the Hadoop big data system. Helpful links are provided for further information. The book is mostly easy to read, with a consistent layout of content (i.e. License, Activity, Purpose, Official Page, Hadoop Integration, description, tutorial link, and simple example code). Useful comparisons between tools are occasionally provided. This book should prove helpful to managers, developers, and architects, which are new to big data and want a quick overview of the major components of Hadoop. Most Hadoop books discuss some of the components listed here, but this book contains a much wider range of components than other books. That said, there are omissions, including:* Hue - a popular web-based tool providing centralised access to many underlying Hadoop tools (e.g. Sqoop, Hive, Pig, Oozie, HBase, ZooKeeper, Impala, HDFS etc)* Impala – a fast parallel processing SQL query engine for HadoopThe authors intend to update this book regularly (every year or two), which is ideal if you want to know about the current popular components, and especially good if you have access to safari online (but bad if you need to keep buying the updated book).Where should you go next after reading this book? I would suggest gaining some detail by reading Big Data Made Easy, which I recently reviewed. If you’re new to big data and Hadoop, and you want to quickly review what it is, and the current state of its major components, I highly recommend this small book.

When some people considering you while reading , you could feel so proud. But, as opposed to other individuals feels you must instil in yourself that you are reading not due to that reasons. Reading this will offer you greater than people admire. It will certainly overview of recognize greater than the people looking at you. Already, there are many sources to knowing, reviewing a book still becomes the front runner as a fantastic method.

Modern PHP Ecosystem and Best Practices By AmirBehzad Eslami I've developed PHP applications since version 4.0, back in the days when all methods were public. Now, most of those codes are considered legacy. Before reading this book, there were many gaps in my understanding of PHP 5, not only in its new features, but also in the new best practices. This book alone helped me to upgrade myself to PHP 5.6 confidently. The author knows how to present stuff clearly. By giving real world examples, he wants to make sure you really get it. The book is easy to read and very well written. However, it is assumed the reader already knows how to code in PHP; it is not a book for beginners, or to learn PHP's basics.Unlike online tutorials, the examples in this book are modern, for example, the author uses a component from Symfony framework to demonstrate the Namespace usage. Not only the author explains each new feature with clear examples, but he also covers best practices for each feature. The author is well-known because of his work at www.phptherightway.com, you can get an idea on his opinions on this website. To conclude, I highly recommend this book.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Really Great Content By Kelly Kiernan This book does a great job of explaining traits, interfaces and a number of other language features I was fuzzy on. It even goes through configuring a server with nginx, deploying your project and more admin stuff I needed to improve on. I was really excited to see that stuff covered so well. It's also cool to learn a bit about HHVM and Hack. Great book, highly recommended.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Great concept, but a bit rushed. By S. Rider Overall this is a great concept for a book, and I like that it's a lean book. At the same time, I wish the author had spent a bit more time on some topics. He does a very fast overview of most topics, and though some topics can be explained in a page (generators), he could have spent more time on others that require a bit more explaining (closures and attaching state). So in some places it's great, and in others it mainly serves to tip me off that I need to go... somewhere else... and learn about Topic X.

I had to get to page 128 before Shutter priority was finally addressed. This book was obviously intended for beginners. But if that were so, why would a beginner purchase the newest and arguably the greatest APS-C camera on the market so far. On page 140 the paragraph heading is "Using Custom Functions". I thought, finally, let's get to the meat of the camera". But no! Here's a quote. "Unfortunately I'd have to buy my editor a year's supply of her favorite hair-coloring product if I covered every custom function."Also, he tells you how to do something, but not why you would want to do it. Not much is going to be learned about photography in this book. Now I know why they call it ...for dummies. You've got to be one to buy this thing. Unfortunately you don't find that out until AFTER you buy it.For the person that just purchased their first DSLR, and it happens to be the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, you'll be in over your head, and this book will teach you some of the basics of photography theory, and most of the functions of the camera but that's about it. It's not complete by any means. What a disappointment. If I could I would give this 2 1/2 stars AT BEST.Anybody want to buy a copy cheap?

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed By Mike K Barely made three stars. You are not going to learn how to operate the Canon7D Mark-II from this book. Has a few good pointers. That's about it.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. This Book Should Be Retitled By Dan Umberger I was thoroughly disappointed with this book. The title should be changed to "Canon EOS 7D Mark II for Dummies Who Know Nothing About Photography, But Bought Themselves a Pro-Grade Camera." When I buy a camera-model specific book, I expect to find information specific to that model of camera. Instead, this book was padded with information on fundamentals. Most of the book consists of instruction on the basics of photography, including exposure, the rule of thirds, composition, depth of field, how to pan, how to avoid camera shake, motion blur, how to shoot landscapes, macros, portraits, how to photograph sunsets, wildlife, and defining your photographic goals. There's a lengthy section on using the full auto mode. Really? On a 7D Mark II? This isn't the Canon T5!Furthermore, whenever we approach anything a serious photographer would want to read, the author repeatedly states that space doesn't permit him to address the topic. When discussing custom functions, he says, "Unfortunately, I'd have to buy my editor a year's supply of hair coloring product if I covered every custom function." Hey, that's why I bought the book!I know this is a "For Dummies" book, but I've read many in that series that were seriously detailed. This one isn't.Unfortunately, it appears that the publisher of David Busch's excellent guides may have run into financial problems, and his book on the 7D II won't be forthcoming. Here's two alternative suggestions. You can either buy the Kindle-only Canon 7D Mark II Experience book, or if you want a paper book with Busch's level of detail, you could buy Busch's guide to the Canon 5D Mark III. Sure, it's a different camera, and there's some significant differences between them, but the menu structure of the 7D II is quite similar to that of the 5D III, and most of the advanced features work the same.

Free PDF Ebook Getting to Know Web GIS, by Pinde Fu

Getting to Know Web GIS, a workbook with detailed, step-by-step exercises, teaches readers how to share resources online and build web GIS applications easily and quickly. It covers Esri’s suite of web GIS technologies including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Server, web app templates, WebApp Builder, API for JavaScript, mobile GIS apps, mobile SDKs, CityEngine, and 3D web maps. Holistic Approach: Unlike books that focus on individual products, this book teaches web GIS technologies as a holistic platform. Each chapter completes an application project using multiple products from server side to browser/client side. Easy to Apply: You don’t have to be a developer to build web apps. This book facilitates immediate productivity. It teaches how to build engaging web apps without a single line of programming. The two chapters involving programming are easy to follow and don’t require a strong programing background. Each of the 10 chapters in this book has —a conceptual discussion section that gives readers the big picture and the principles, —a system requirements section that helps instructors to prepare for the lab setup, —a detailed tutorial section with abundant screenshots that confirm progress along the way, —a Q/A section to answer common questions, —an assignment section for readers to practice what they have just learned, —and a robust reference section. This book is the result of the author’s extensive working experience at Esri and teaching experience at Harvard University Extension and other universities. It is a practical manual for classroom lab work and on the job training for GIS students, instructors, GIS analysts, managers, web developers, and a broad range of GIS professionals.

By A Customer I bought this book for self-study after completing a GIS certificate program from a major university. I was looking forward to enhancing my GIS skills. By the second chapter, I realized that this book does not match up with the most current version of ArcGIS Online. I was able to muddle through, and figured out how to navigate through the newer version of ArcGIS Online on my own. By the third chapter, I discovered I couldn't go any further without access to ArcGIS for Server. Don't buy this book unless you are taking a class that uses this as a textbook.

The book was able to provide a detailed background on each topic and then a lab to practice the skills. You will learn how to create web maps on ArcGIS.com, web apps, publish data through ArcGIS Server, and even dive into adapting API's and writing Python scripts

From the cover I expected a light-hearted romp. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The main character, Helena, has 3 black belts & owns a martial arts academy in Vegas. She carries a Glock & her ex is an FBI agent. Bottom line, she doesn't take crap from anyone. One day she gets a call from her sister, Sonia, a TV star in Hollywood, saying she is being stalked. So Helena packs a bag & heads out to help/protect her baby sister. I really enjoyed Helena's attitude about Hollywood. She has enough confidence in herself not to worry about what others think about her. I don't want to give away spoilers, but I loved the ending & definitely can't wait for book 2! This definitely has the makings of a great new series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. but I did enjoy this one By Eskimo PrincessAlisa (Jenkins) I don't read many (cozy) mystery books, but I did enjoy this one. I did have a few issues with the characters though. The writing and story line were good.*I did not like how the main character, Helena, acted like she was part of the police force or FBI just because her ex was in the FBI. She was a karate instructor, but acted so much tougher. I get that she didn't care about her image or what others thought of her, but I thought she took that too far. And how was it that the some of the police just went along with her and her I think I am part of the police thing? that was way off for me.*Sonia, boy was she something!!!! She could barely function, does not face reality very well. I am not her fan.*Jordan, LOVE him! Best supporting character ever!As for the suspects, well I had the same feeling as Helena and Jordan on some of them. Some of those suspects were just creepy. Yet, unlike other mysteries I've read, you most likely won't have the true person picked out. I thought someone else was the culprit and I was WAY off on that one.Great story line, good writing, just not some good characters or characteristics. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. 4 starsI was given a copy in exchange for an honest review

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious By Patricia Ann Blevins ARC FOR AN HONEST REVIEWThis was a quirky little book. Helena go s to her sister Sonia in L.A. When she gets a stalker. Helena gets caught up in all things Hollywood and doesn't care too. But to keep her sister safe she has to do some outlandish things. When an unexpected murder happens and her sister becomes the prime suspect. Helena pulls out all the stops to try and figure out who the Stalker/ Murder is. Just wonder how many times she can get over her head and how much do you think she can get accomplished doing things her way. Will she be able to solve this crime with the help of her ex and all of her new friends? This was a funny as all get out book just kept you wondering what they could get into next.

I thought I knew a lot about batch file programming, but I was very surprise by how much I didn't know, and learned through this series. I read the Kindle version.

Absolutely Recommend buying entire series, Volumes I, II and III By MrBubba Having written scores of batch files dating back to the days of DOS (but the most sophisticated a batch file menu), and having taking programming courses in C, Basic, Pascal, PL/I, VB.NET, COBOL and self-taught VBA in Office, I never had any course in batch file programming. I recently had a project at work that could really use sophisticated batch files, because at work we're limited to VBA, VBScript or batch files. I purchased all 3 volumes and *all* 3 held information I needed with *real* examples. (Examples: I needed many ways to use echo, specifics on ping, set, variables, comparing strings with if statement and better error handling in Vol 1, setlocal, delayed expansion, the Replace command, which I didn't even know existed but will really help with my current project in Vol II, and handling virtual drives, pushd, popd, tasklist, taskkill, parameter handling and most importantly sophisticated For statements in Vol III, again with actual detailed examples.) Absolutely recommend, a must buy!!!

I am a few years away from writing batch scripts so this was a good book to remind me. It takes the novice nicely into the commands as well as reminding those of us who have not used it for some years.

"[...]months later, precentor of Barchester Cathedral, that office being, as is not unusual, in the bishop's gift. Now there are peculiar circumstances connected with the precentorship which must be explained. In the year 1434 there died at Barchester one John Hiram, who had made money in the town as a wool-stapler, and in his will he left the house in which he died and certain meadows and closes near the town, still called Hiram's Butts, and Hiram's Patch, for the support of twelve superannuated wool-carders, all of whom should have been born and bred and spent their days in Barchester; he also appointed that an alms-house should be built for their abode, with a fitting residence for a warden, which warden was also to receive a certain sum annually out of the rents of the said butts and patches. He, moreover, willed, having had a soul alive to harmony, that the precentor of the cathedral should have the option of being also warden of the almshouses, if the bishop in each case approved. From that day to this the charity had gone on and prospered—at least, the charity had gone on, and the estates had prospered. Wool-carding in Barchester[...]".

The Warden, by Anthony Trollope

From Publishers Weekly This first novel in Trollope's classic Chronicles of Barsetshire series pits reformer John Bold against Septimus Harding, the precentor of Barchester Cathedral and warden of Hiram's Hospital, an almshouse supported by a bequest to the local diocese. As Bold works to expose the fact that more of the charity's income goes to Harding than to its bedesmen, he begins to take a romantic interest in Harding's youngest daughter, Eleanor. In this audio edition, narrator David Shaw-Parker delivers a winning performance that keeps listeners engaged throughout. With a deep, accented voice Shaw-Parker brings this 19th-century novel to life. His timing and tone are spot-on and he creates distinct voices for the book's many characters. (Apr.)

Review "Trollope will remain one of the most trustworthy . . . of the writers who have helped the heart of man to know itself." --Henry James

From the Publisher The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, lesser-known literature. Newly type-set and produced on high-quality paper in trade paperback format, the Broadview Literary Texts series is a delight to handle as well as to read.

Each volume includes a full introduction, chronology, bibliography, and explanatory notes along with a variety of documents from the period, giving readers a rich sense of the world from which the work emerged.

146 of 149 people found the following review helpful. It was the beginning of an wonderful adventure . . . By Russel E. Higgins I first read Anthony Trollope's book "The Warden" in 1995 at the age of 54; three years later I had finished all forty-seven Trollope novels, his autobiography, and most of his short stories. "The Warden" provides a necessary introduction to the Barsetshire Novels, which, in turn, provide a marvelous introduction to rural Victorian society, and its religious, political, and social underpinnings. However, "The Warden" is a small literary masterpiece of its own, even though the more popular "Barchester Towers" tends to obscure it. "The Warden" moves slowly, of course, but so did Victorian England; soon the reader is enveloped in a rich world of brilliantly created characters: in the moral dilemma of a charming and innocent man, Reverend Septimus Harding, who is probably the most beloved of all Trollope's characters; in the connivings of Archdeacon Grantly, who will become a significant force in the later Barsetshire novels; in Eleanor, an example of the perfect Victorian woman, a type that appears in many of Trollope's subsequent novels; and in the sanctimonious meddling of John Bold, whose crusade for fairness throws the town into turmoil. In modern terminology, "The Warden" is a "good read" for those readers with patience, a love of 19th century England, and an appreciation of literary style. Trollope's sentences have a truly musical cadence. "The Warden" was Trollope's fourth novel and his first truly successful one. It provides a strong introduction to the other five novels of the Barsetshire series, where the reader will meet a group of fascinating characters, including the Mrs. Proudie (one of Trollope's finest creations), the Reverend Obadiah Slope, and the Grantly family. The reader will soon find that Trollope's well-developed characters soon become "friends," and that the small cathedral town of Barchester becomes a very familiar and fascinating world in itself. It is a wonderful trip through these six novels. (I read all six in about three weeks.) But one must begin with "The Warden." Brew a cup of tea, toast a scone on a quiet evening, and begin the wonderful voyage through Trollope's charming Barchester. When you have finished the six novels, you may, like me, want to commence reading the Palliser series (another six novels) and follow Plantagenet and Glencora Palliser through their triumphs and travails! However, that remains another story.

45 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Classic of victorian fiction, slightly dated by modern standards By TS This is the first of Anthony Trollope's "Chronicles of Barsetshire" novels, and his first popularly successful novel. The basic plot is that the Warden, Mr. Harding, has 1) a sinecure church position that pays him 800 pounds a year; 2) a reform-minded friend who's trying to abolish church sinecures; 3) a daughter who wants to marry the reform-minded friend; and 4) an existing son-in-law of an Archdeacon who takes defending the Rights of the Church very, very seriously. If you like Jane Austen novels there's a good chance you'll like this, as the basic plots -- church livings, the marriage prospects of 19th-centry british gentry -- are fairly similar. Trollope's prose here is fairly light and clear, and if not quite as sharply witty as Austen's, no one else's prose is either. Trollope does spill a great deal of ink on lengthy asides to the reader, some of which paint interesting pictures of contemporary British culture and some of which modern readers may find *amazingly* skippable.Overall, this one's a lightly pleasant example of precisely the sort of intelligent, Victorian parlor romance it's trying to be. If you like this, the next volume in sequence is Barchester Towers; it's a bit more comically satirical, somewhere in between this and P.G. Wodehouse, but almost certainly something you'll enjoy if you liked this one.

37 of 37 people found the following review helpful. What Should A Virtuous Man Do? By Bucherwurm This is a simple, short novel dealing with the ethical dilemma of a virtuous man. The Reverend Harding is the warden of a small home providing quarters for 12 retired, indigent workers. The facility is provided for by a trust set up by its founder over two hundred years ago. Income off the land provides revenue for the maintenance of the home and a living for the warden.. The warden has traditionally been the benefactor of this income which has increased over the years. The Rev. Harding is a gentle, honest man who has never given thought to his 800 pound annual revenue until a young reformer files suit, claiming the intent of the will is being violated. Harding thinks about the matter and is inclined to resign. The Bishop and Archdeacon argue that he is entitled to the income. This book certainly would be a good one for a book club read and discussion. The reformer, the lawyers, the church hierarchy and Reverend Harding all have their views on the matter. Author Trollope does not really pass final judgment on his characters; none of them are cast in black and white terms. In fact Trollope makes the unusual move of bringing a criticism of both the press and Charles Dickens into the novel. The press makes strident value judgments about issues without bothering itself with all the facts or considering the effect their articles will have on the people involved; Charles Dickens treats people as being all good or all bad. Indeed, I found myself arguing with myself for several days after reading The Warden. What should the Rev. Harding done? Was the issue shrouded in shades of gray, or was it clear cut one way or the other? Many critics consider this to be one of Trollope's lesser works, yet to me it is a very interesting, valuable presentation of an ethical dilemma. And for readers who are reluctant to pick up Victorian novels because of their common 700+ page lengths, this is a little gem at less than 300 pages. Criticism? Well I did a bit of eye-rolling during some of the melodramatic passages. All and all, though, this is an excellent read. From an historical standpoint there was considerable attention being paid to clergy income during this period in England. Trollope's tale was very timely in this regard. One final note. There are many outstanding Victorian novels that I would give a five star rating to. This book doesn't quite fit into that hall of fame so I have given it just 4 stars, which shouldn't be interpreted as a slight to Mr. Trollope or The Warden.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. you risk disappointment, floundering and By Robert C.S. Downs This is an astonishingly thorough guidebook through the times ahead for many of us now in our seventies. An absolute must-read if you want to prepare adequately for your old age. The author has spent most of her professional life working with, and coming to an understanding of, the territory that lies ahead. If you don't read this book, and listen carefully to what she has to say, you risk disappointment, floundering and, quite possibly, personal disaster. Preparing ourselves for the years that remain has got to be our number one priority, and this is a book that quite simply lays out in the clearest prose imaginable just how to do that. If you are living with increasing anxiety about what's to come, this book will permanently ease your mind. Robert C.S. Downs

A Useful, Practical Guide By Caro I wasn't sure what to expect and was fascinated to find a very clear, straight-forward manual covering all the sorts of issues an individual or a family member might encounter with aging. Checklists, references, clear background information augment the author's theme that aging is a part of life and like a road trip, needs advance planning. We all need to take time to read this.

It's also for us baby boomers who, until the arthritis set in, thought we'd never grow old. It's readable and full of excellent information to nudge us all towards thinking about the end of life. Susan writes matter-of-factly, making what she says easier to take in.
