Think about it. How likely would it be that Elvis Presley, one of the world's biggest stars, would come to a remote town on the west coast of Florida to make a movie, and by sheer blind luck I would get to meet and work with him? It all seems so improbable....and it was the one big event in my life that would change my future, leading me to Hollywood and a life I could never have dreamed of. I have traveled the world, seen things that most people will never see, met and worked with some of the most famous people in the world and had some wonderful adventures. It has given me a life full of adventure and excitement that I would have never known but for that magic summer of 1961 when my life was given a direction and changed forever. From then until now I have been following that dream, and this is my story.

After losing her college sweetheart and her job, ex teacher Annie hides out in the wilds of West Kerry in Ireland to get her act together. But despite vowing to win back her ex boyfriend, she soon finds herself entangled with two different men in the tight knit local community. Mart, a washed up soap star falls off his barstool into her arms and decides she is the perfect tonic for his flagging ratings. And Scott, a hip American photographer on assignment in the area who has a talent for finding her in embarrassing situations (usually in her greyest underwear), who she decides she loves to hate. But it is the arrival of an old college contemporary, and former rival for her ex-boyfriend Rory’s affections, that really forces her to get a grip on her self. Social climbing glamazon, Philomena “Grotty’ Crotty is now married to one of Ireland’s richest men and is busy re-making herself as a society philanthropist. While helping to raise funds for a children’s hospice, Annie is forced to go begging to her old university "frenemy". Philomena has designs on both Mart and Scott and will use anyone and anything to get even with Annie. The scene is set for a collision course that forces Annie to confront what she really wants out of life and ‘that certain someone’. “A Certain Someone” is a sparkling romance with a contemporary twist but also a sharply observed comedy of manners featuring a bruised heroine coming to terms with her own limitations and expectations of love beyond the clichés of hearts and flowers.

Annie is a great character, funny and self deprecatingand on a serious losing streak but determined and brave. After she loses herboyfriend and her job, she slinks home to Ireland with her tail between her legsonly to find herself caught up in village life and romantic intrigue in Kerry. Sofar so rom com but what makes this book stand out is the lively writing and the noholds barred insights into post Celtic Tiger Ireland. Annie’s deadly rival, theghastly nouveau riche Philomena Crotty is a comic monster to rival Lady Catherine deBurgh in her condescension and control freakery.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A delightful romantic comedy with an endearing heroine By Kitty Smith Annie's story is one I think we can all relate to on some level. Who among us hasn't had a point in our life where we just wanted to pack up and run to another city or even country and make a fresh start? It's a fun holiday read, full of humor and satire.Annie is a melodramatic sort but endearing nonetheless. Fresh off a disastrous relationship with the perfect man who turned out to not be so perfect after all, she spends an inordinate amount of time wallowing in self pity before finally heading back to Ireland to start anew. She soon finds herself caught up in the social events of Kerry and also gets crosswise with an alpha female by the name of Philomena Crotty who has a bee in her bonnet about Annie. The story is quite the comedy at times, but also a lovely tale of a woman finding her true self beneath all the ideas of what she thought she was, and finding what true love really is. If you enjoy literary humor and heartfelt romance this will put a smile on your face.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed! By Book Lover I enjoyed the tale of love and life lessons. The author did a great job with adding humor and telling a story of love and loss. I hope to see more from this author and will be looking for more books. Great Job!

This is a clean and wholesome western romance set in Oregon in the late 1880's. It is the third book in the Mail Order Bride of Oregon series, The Orphanage Brides. This is the story of Bridget and George. She wants a prince or a knight--some one who will fight for her. He assumes that she is his alone and that the marriage proposal is already in the bag. Bridget becomes suspicious of George's intentions after reading several of his letters. When there is no hint of a marriage proposal, she considers other options. Maybe she should just find someone in Boston to marry. But then she considers that no one from a well-to-do family would marry the likes of her. She decides to set out for Oregon on her own. No waiting around for this girl! George, the youngest of the Cowan brothers, desires a wife who is just like those of his brothers. His letters are full of flattery and flirtatious words--but no marriage proposal. He is confident that Bridgett is his alone--and that she wants only him. Afterall, she came to Oregon without being asked! When Bridget meets George, she is immediately smitten--but George will have to prove himself as a worthy suitor. There is plenty of conflict and twists and turns in this third book in the series of the Orphanage Brides.

The third morning also it was there, though the library had been locked up at night by Mr. Otis himself, and the key carried up-stairs. The whole family were now quite interested; Mr. Otis began to suspect that he had been too dogmatic in his denial of the existence of ghosts, Mrs. Otis expressed her intention of joining the Psychical Society, and Washington prepared a long letter to Messrs. The Canterville Ghost, by Oscar Wilde

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

A light and humorous story, and after reading it's guaranteed to stop you worrying about things that go bump in the night.

Excellent narration and a wonderful listening experience By Z Hayes Thanks to our local library, my daughter and I have enjoyed several playaways which are basically all-in-one audiobooks. All one needs is a triple A battery and one is set to go. At our local library, patrons are expected to supply their own batteries and headphones (the latter because of hygiene concerns). They are really small and inconspicuous so that it makes it convenient to slip into a purse, bring it along to the gym or while exercising outdoors, and also on car trips. Although it is an all-in-one audiobook, the playaway can also be heard via a CD player with the use of an adapter. The operation of the playaway is simple - one just plugs in earphones, speakers, or a car adapter into the provided jack; press the POWER button, press the play button, and listen! There is a keypad which allows the listener to do one of the following: equalizer, Power button, speed button (choice of 5 speeds), turning volume up, turning volume down, LCD screen which indicates the status and how much battery power is left, reverse button for chapters, play/pause button, and forward chapter button. The Canterville Ghost has always been one of my favorite stories and Rupert Degas' comic-infused narration makes this an engaging listening experience.

By Ruthie McBride The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde is a highly entertaining book. 5 stars for this wonderful book, I've read and re-read it many times. Whoever wrote the description for this illustrated edition for Amazon is completely mistaken. I downloaded a free sample to see if maybe there were two versions of this book but the sample that downloaded is the original book. The mistaken description states: "In the 1600s, cowardly Sir Simon of Canterville flees a duel and seeks solace in the family castle. His ashamed father seals him in the room where he is hiding and dooms him to life as a ghost until one of his descendants performs a brave deed. Simon believes he may be saved when he meets Cuffy Williams, an American kinsman stationed with a troop of soldiers at the castle in 1943. Will this blood relative save the family honor, or will his blood be as yellow as the rest of the Cantervilles?" Perhaps that's describing a different novel? No matter though, the true book is much more entertaining and the illustrations for this edition are quite nice.

As a contributor to this story, one random sentence, I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome it was much better than I expected. Mason is a gifted author who knows how to use humor along with his drama.Does not hurt that we grew up together and all that. Good luck with future writings pal.DF

The author took ten random sentences and put them in the book and that is how he came up with the story. It's something you don't see very often and it's great to see how he uses the sentences. This book itself is humorous and interesting. Nigeria drug lords isn't something you hear about a lot. At least I don't.

I admit I've got a pretty limited knowledge of the life and times of Nigerian drug lords, but Mr. Gilbert took me on a fun ride with this tale. I can't wait to read his next ten random sentence compilation! If you're a sci-fi fan, check out his other book, "The Sacrifist"! He is one gifted writer!

Giving ratings for books and other items that you never read or bought hurts everyone who trusts the ratings. There is always a way to make an easy buck, just make sure that if you are lying to others by the ratings you are leaving that you enjoy being lied to as well.

Hndy guide in which to investigative work By Ben Rothke Had you Googled social media investigation a decade ago, you would have gotten a handful of responses. Today, it has become a key part of law enforcement, family law and more.Social media played predominantly in the terrible murder last week of journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward. Law enforcement poured over the social media profiles of the perpetrator. In Introduction to Social Media Investigation (Syngress 978-0128016565), author Jennifer Golbeck PhD has written a guide that shows how you can use the most popular social media channels as part of an investigation. While there are thousands of social media channels, the book focuses on the largest of them, namely: Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+, Tumblr, Instagram and YouTube. For each of the channels, Golbeck provides a number of case studies and real world examples of how to perform an investigation. The book provides a basic approach to gleaning information from each of these channels. For most investigators, the reconnaissance work will not be so difficult given the amount of information people share on social media sites. The book is an introduction, and the author herself notes that most of the investigation stories detailed in the book are relatively simple. Namely that the target uses social media and the investigator collects the information. If it’s a popular site like Facebook or Twitter, and the person being investigated is somewhat chatty (which is often the case on these channels), the investigators job is not that difficult. But many investigations are much more complex and will require a deeper and more thorough approach. The book touches on that, but is primarily based on the more simple investigations. There are other tools that can be used in an investigation, such as reverse image searches, Social Searcher and more. Those looking for an introductory text on the topic, such as information security professionals, those in law enforcement, investigative journalists and more will find Introduction to Social Media Investigation a handy guide in which to start their investigative word.

Okay, here goes. When Jaf Daskal betrays the sinister fellow who paid him to recover a mysterious ‘treasure,’ he feels like he’s being pursued by the Valkyries of Andromeda as he and his little band are launched into a bizarre adventure of fraud, power, sex, drugs, and religion that culminates in a battle for planet-wide freedom. Valkyries of Andromeda is a science fiction adventure story that begins the saga of Jaf Daskal, an orphan brought up by a poor elderly woman on the afterthought planet Kipple. From her he learned some appreciation of universal feminine attributes; from the city he learned to adapt and fit in, to be everybody’s friend, and to bend ethics in order to survive. He goes into free-lance work, doing whatever pays, contracting to recover a mysterious treasure on the desert planet of Mobahey. There he signs on two drifters, one oh-so-sharp and one oh-so-peculiar, and the three head out on a hunt. But first, Jaf also arranges with the original discoverer of the treasure map, an eccentric old sort, to betray Jaf’s sponsor so the two can make off with the treasure themselves. Once the ‘treasure’ (two big rubbery balls) is brought back to town the sponsor figures out what’s up and comes after them like the ‘Valkyries of Andromeda’, and they make a hasty uncharted escape to equally uncharted Caliuga, a planet settled by wayward travelers over the past couple centuries. There they are mistaken for the Empire’s Inspector General, Caliuga’s first contact with the Empire ever, bringing joy that the planet of castaways will soon be re-connected to civilization, and all its blessings. The Caliugan settlements have mostly prospered peacefully, but the latest arrivals (before Jaf and crew) are trying to consolidate and gain power over the others by forming a Planetary Union and coercing other colonies into joining, unintentionally drawing Jaf and his cohorts into their vortex. Fraud, confusion, intrigue, schemes and plots ensue as Jaf and company are sucked into the politics of Caliuga, culminating in battles and bloodshed. Valkyries of Andromeda is the first in the Jaf Daskal Diaries, from a man of the 24th century who has been many things in his life, often mistaken for noble or heroic. Here he takes a shameless look back at his hundred-year career that made him famous enough that people would care about his life, and candid enough that they would enjoy his account.

By Mr. Reinaldo Garcia Peet brilliantly manages to walk the tightrope between visionary literature and self-referential satire. This book gives every indication of being but the first installment in something grand and lasting.

It has a number of drawbacks but most were but it wins me over, mostly, with decent writing with some whimsical humor. A first person narrative from the view point of Jaf, an amiable sociopath and adventurer with a fast moving plot, it keeps you hooked and reading (the least an author can do). Jaf’s sidekicks are fleshed out and entertaining and the villains and allies are somewhat thinner. On the con side, it was a paint-by-numbers storyline with a bare minimum of genre-required features (space ship, space travel, blasters). Very few surprises, but the story doesn’t drag and, though written in first-person perspective, has very little navel gazing.Peet provides a teaser of a second novel of the continuing adventures of Jaf. I’m not sure I’m hooked enough to read this second book in a series.

J.E.Moores has one crazy looking family tree. On its branches he airs his mother's dirty laundry with a sharp wit, setting her bouffant hairdo into a tizzy. Meet Grampy, a rascal who told tall tales about Snotgrass, Swamp Boggers, Philly Lou Birds, Side Hill Gougers and a Yupapotamus on long drives through the backwoods of Maine. Meet Mammy, a redhead beauty who smuggled subversive underground comics to her grandchild from the Adults Only section of the Rockland Greyhound Station newstand. Meet forgetful Kenneth and his pet turkey that followed him everywhere, the neighbor Hamburger Head, and Cecil the Seal Boy from the Union Fair Freak Show. And don't forget the farmhouse ghost, Old Grandma. No family secret is safe in this honest slice of Americana, spanning five generations of Mainers. A hilarious epic that gets the reader laughing out loud and then hits you deep with an awareness of humanity's beautiful flaws. You may find that this family is not too different from yours.

I am so glad he did! This book is a wonderful celebration of a family full of wacky peculiarities. Nothing keeps this family down! Quirky, complex, great storytelling, and "wicked" funny! The characters are moving and stay with you. I liked the book so much, I've read it twice now.

Every time you think things are all going to work out, there is a new twist. It made me laugh out loud and cry; sometimes at the same moment. Although this particular family is in Maine, I think anyone can relate to the characters. An easy read.

By Meghan Pease Such a wonderful read, especially since I am apart of the family of course! Although, the book did not make it as far as my life and my being, my father, my grandmother, my great aunt, and great grandparents are all major characters. "Aunt Faye and Uncle Tim" are my grandparents, whom raised me most of my life, very similar to the bond that J.E. Moores held with his grandparents "Grampy and Grammy" who happen to be my great grandparents. They were remarkable people, and the story of Snotgrass tells the history of them, and their stories of giving up life as they know it and teaching the people they loved lessons. In the book, you will find a tale of old stories my great grandfather use to tell as J.E.M, Little Tim ( my uncle) and Little Roland, and probably Toot. Although, it is sad the next generation of us didn't get as many wonderful memories as they all did, we sure can have this book to live by and to help us remember. The best read I have read in a long time and not being biased because of course this is my family, BUT ANY family can take something from this. This is a tale, about a boy, growing up with his family, and all the stories amongst it. I would recommend it to anyone trying to feel nostalgic and relate to the old maine way of life. Enjoy!

This book shows not only a child’s love for their kitten, but the responsibility of looking after one.The rhyming story shows the joy on a child's face when the kitten chase after a yarn, jumping up on their bodies, the look on the kitten's face while their tail goes swish, swish while food is been poured in their bowl, jumping up a tree while playing outside. They love to hear their kitten purr when their coat of fur is been bushed. A child loves the excitement a kitten shows and they are thankful to God for having a kitten. The illustrator captured each scene wonderfully with bold and bright colors. The book shows a happy and loving relationship between a child and their kitten.FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.

Raping the Gods is a  bizarre black comedy about power trips, insanity, and the dark side of sex addiction. Brian Whitney - a dissolute, dead broke, alcoholic writer in Portland, Maine - is hired to ghostwrite the memoirs of Dylan, a deranged, fantastically wealthy sex addict, who lives in Samoa with his two female sex slaves. Dylan's had a profound spiritual awakening during a vision quest he went on with a local tribe. He thinks he met God. Actually, he thinks he met God and had sex with Him. Raped Him, in fact. Working with Dylan is the job Whitney's been waiting for. He can hardly wait to get started. There's only one catch. Well, two catches. One is that Whitney must travel to Samoa, to hear Dylan's stories, to live as Dylan does, drunk and high for days on end, with his own personal sex slave, so he can understand the world how Dylan sees it. Two is he must bring with him a photograph of an aging former porn star, nude, passed out, and wearing a moose hat. Whitney can get the photograph. But can he really live as Dylan does? Can he bring himself to take possession of another person, a slave so abject she will carry out every command, no matter how humiliating? What follows is a strange journey into the dark heart of man, in particular one man who lives as an all-powerful god upon the earth. "Brian Whitney's first novel is weird, surreal, and at times so laugh-out-loud funny that you will cough up your breakfast. Imagine if Hunter Thompson and William S. Burroughs went upriver in a Navy patrol boat to visit Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. The result would be a lot like Raping the Gods." - Patrick Quinlan, bestselling author of Sexbot, Smoked, and All Those Moments

By hAtORaDe I feel like I've probably been added to some kind of sexual predator watchlist after reading this. But honestly at this point what's one more?Whitney's "Raping the Gods" reads like the drunken ramblings of a borderline homeless drifter who sits next to you at a bar in Key Biscayne, Florida on a Tuesday afternoon. He sits right freaking next to you even though every other seat at the bar is empty. And after bumming one of your last three cigarettes, he starts in on this impossible and unbelievably offensive tale of moral and sexual deviance that you want to hate and run away from screaming like your hair is full of bees, but like the narrator you can't -- or at least I couldn't.Whitney writes with a freedom and energy that is generally enthralling and frequently unnerving. But as master of this bizarre universe, he somehow manages to champion the humanity of its broken inhabitants, each of whom is a willing (if not eager) participant in its ******-up reality. And there's a brilliance in that. The only reason I withheld the the 5th star is that I think his wild Gonzo-esque tales would benefit from the inclusion of a Paul Scanlon type editor who could smooth the rough edges without rounding the corners of Whitney's scintillating tales of depravity, debauchery, and ultimate morality.

I have found one in Brian Whitney. I have had writer's block for years now, and reading this book has inspired me to write again. The story is sometimes sick, always twisted, and very very funny. The prose is to-the-point with absolutely no filler. Although I plan to read more of his works, this is the first book I have read from Brian. I know very little about his life, but I do know that part of this book is autobiographical. He does an amazing job blurring fact and fiction. The characters, including himself, all had some screws loose, it seems. Some more than others.I kept wondering where the in the world this book was headed, and I'm very glad it ended the way it did.MUST READ MORE FROM BRIAN WHITNEY. YOU ALL DO THE SAME. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

By Jamie Wallace Whitney is a modern day Hubert Selby Jr in that he writes what he knows. Never looking away from the darkness of the world, has shaped Whitney's artistic outlook. He may look like he's just writing what he knows, but his true creativity and wicked sense of humor is on display. A good book for anyone aspiring to become a writer!

Well Max did warn be about being a movie extra. He did say it was a bad idea to answer the advertisement in the newspaper. I think he feared I would end up in some dodgy set somewhere hanging from a ceiling playing the part of the dead. Or maybe even an extra in an adult movie. I can't tell him the truth - that I wouldn't have minded that. But no such luck. The movie I was in didn't have dead bodies or naked bodies hanging around. Disappointed as I am with that, this challenge did show me something that I had long dreamed of. So maybe one of these days I'll be a star. I just hope it's the kind of star that will make my mom proud. Or maybe I could be a star with a secret life - hmmm, interesting.

Sam is definitely quite creative and her task of being a movie extra really uncovered some truths for her. I'm loving her personal growth as she tackles her bucket list. I look forward to enjoying the rest of her journey with her.

Henrik Ibsen wrote this dark social satire as a response to the outrage sparked by his previous play, Ghosts, which contained allusions to the spread of syphilis in the community and called attention to hypocrisy in Victorian morality. In An Enemy of the People, Ibsen portrays his frustration through a man called Dr. Stockmann, who discovers the town baths are tainted, possibly making people ill. His goal is to reveal the situation to the town council, or through the newspaper, but confronts resistance from all aspects of the community, who are mainly concerned with the economic repercussions of losing the town’s primary attraction.

An Enemy of the People, by Henrik Ibsen

Review "An unequivocal triumph." --Times Literary Supplement (London)"Christopher Hampton's new version of the text is also a revelation . . . An Enemy of the People has been reborn as a passionate current debate about the value of the individual . . . The dust has been blown off the original text, and it will not settle for a long time . . . There is a vitality, vehemence and victory here against the odds." --Spectator (London)"More than any revival of Ibsen's plays I've seen, it creates a sense of place vital to the theme . . . An Enemy of the People is little short of superb, for it gives us both a big, rich, public play and the private drama of two men locked in rivalry that probably goes back to the playpen . . . You want an unforgettable picture of the idealist at his most necessary yet impossible? Here it is." --The Times (London)

Ibsen on the conflict between idealism and practicality By Lawrance Bernabo Henrik Ibsen is the father of modern drama and his 1882 drama "An Enemy of the People" ("En folkefiende") was one of his more controversial works. In the play Dr. Stockmann discovers that the new baths built in his town are infected with a deadly disease that requires they should be closed until they can be repaired. However, the mayor of the town (the Burgomaster), who is Stockmann's brother Peter, rejects the report and refuses to close the baths because it will bring about the financial ruin of the town. When Dr. Stockmann tries to make his case to the people of the town, the mayor counters by pointing out how expensive it would be to repair the baths and dismisses the doctor for having wild, fanciful ideas. At the public meeting Dr. Stockmann is declared "an enemy of the people" by the Burgomaster. To really appreciate this particular Ibsen play you have to look at it in the context of his previous dramas, because they all represent a conflict between the playwright and his critics. In 1879 Ibsen's play "A Doll's House" ("Et dukkehjem") was produced, wherein the character of Nora pretends to be a silly little wife in order to flatter her husband, who is revealed to be a hypocritical fraud. The idea that a woman would leave her husband and children was seen as being outrageous and basically obscene. Ibsen upset his audience and critics even more in his next play, "Ghosts" ("Gengangere"), an 1881 drama that again attacks conventional morality and hypocrisy. The topic is of congenital venereal disease but the true subject is moral contamination. Mrs. Alving has buried her husband, a degenerate who has left behind a son dying from syphilis and an illegitimate daughter who is probably going to end up being a prostitute. The play ends with Mrs. Alving having to decide if she should poison her son to put him out of his misery or let his agonies persist.Again, Ibsen was attacked for outraging conventional morality. The following year after "Ghosts" the playwright responded with "An Enemy of the People" and the character that is most identified with representing Ibsen on stage in Dr. Stockmann. The allegory is quite plain when the play is considered within the context of Ibsen's work during this period, although while Stockmann is portrayed as a victim there is a sense of destructiveness to his behavior. At the end of the play Stockman has decided to leave the town, but then changes his mind to stay and fight for those things he believes are right. As is the case with most of Ibsen's classic works, "An Enemy of the People" speaks to larger issues than those in conflict in the play. The debate is over the bad water pipes at the new baths, but the true conflict is over the clash of private and public morality. Dr. Stockmann is by far the most idealistic of Ibsen's characters, and that fact that he is opposed by his own brother, the Burgomaster, harkens back to Genesis and the fight between Cain and Able. As was the case with "Ghosts," there is an ambiguous ending where what happens next can be seen as going either way given your own inclinations as a member of the audience. Both of the Stockman brothers are flawed. Dr. Stockman's idealism is at odds with the practical realities of the world in which he lives while the Burgomaster ignores ethical concerns. Ultimately, Ibsen is not forcing us to choose between the two but rather to reject both in terms of some middle ground. The Burgomaster is certainly old school, believing those in authority get to make all the decisions and that the people must subordinate themselves to the society. But he was the one who made the mistake of putting the new water pipes in the wrong place, so even his claims that he is looking out for the welfare of the community are dishonest. Dr. Stockman argues for individual freedom and the right of free expression, but his attempt to fix the problem ignores any effort at persuasion or building public support. He also seems to take pleasure in be able to show that his brother made a mistake. Still, in the end we have to favor the doctor over the mayor because his integrity is clearly stronger, while still recognizing that his idealism is tragically flawed.

The conflict is timeless and the leading character Dr. Stockmann reminded me of Sir Thomas More. After I read the play I did not want to put the book down and wanted more. I flipped to the front of my edition translated by Christpher Hampton and read his nihilistic introduction. Mr. Hampton missed the whole point and somehow thought Dr. Stockman really WAS the "enemy of the people". Hampton sounded like one of the townspeople from the mob in Act Four when he wrote:"This is to simplify Ibsen's intent; because however sympathetic Ibsen feels towards Dr Stockmann's cause, he is too subtle and profound a dramatist not to know that there are few figures more infuriating than the man who is always right. Stockmann's sincerity, naivety and courage co-exist with an innocent vanity, an inability to compromise and an indifference to the havoc caused in the lives of his family and friends, as well as his own, by his dogged pursuit of principle."Hampton's edition is a nice size with print that is easy to read. I loved the story and the characters and I highly recommend it to all. I have lived the experience and have been "the enemy" so I understood Dr. Stockmann but I learned from Christopher Hampton and my own experience not everyone will "get it."

By A Customer If you respond at all to this gentle, loving, intricately detailed, and acute (but never hostile)evocation of late-Victorian London, the chances are good that it will become one of your favorite books. The humor is rather special, and I've found that some Americans simply can't "get into" Grossmith. As for me, I reread the book every year and the very thought of it can make me smile.

55 of 58 people found the following review helpful. An Evergreen Comic Masterpiece. By Donal A. O'Neill This book must be the most nearly perfect piece of comic writing in English, its humour gentle and subtle, its depiction of character, class, time and location flawless. It fixes forever the late-Victorian world of the respectable Lower Middle Class, populated by clerks, petty merchants and tradesmen, observing it with both objectivity and affection. It is splendidly read on tape by Frederick Davidson, whose assumed accent is perfectly gauged to reflect the upwardly-mobile aspirations of the Mr.Charles Pooter, the self-confessed nobody of the title, and which slips down the social scale by several notches in moments of stress and frustration. Though superficially simple, the construction of the narrative is complex in the extreme, with comic situations often being built up over a long period, and with clues carefully planted in earlier sections, only to come to fruition later. It is particularly impressive how the main characters - Pooter himself, his long-suffering and often silly but supportive wife Carrie and his exasperating son Lupin - emerge as rounded characters from apparently simple diary entries and achieve a realism and familiarity as great as any in more serious literature. The situations in which they find themselves - or rather get themselves - are not only ludicrously amusing, but also close to the normality of life as many live it, and one can often, uncomfortably, recognise one's self or one's friends in their reactions to them. What makes the Diary an enduring masterpiece is however the gentle and affectionate treatment of human weakness - and greatness. Pooter may be pompous, foolish and sometimes sycophantic, but he is also loyal, decent and honourable and his life, and his family's, for all its pettiness, also has its dignity. I first read the Diary over forty years ago and it has never ceased to delight me since - it remains a treasured bedside book to be opened at random - and this splendid tape of it is an ideal companion for long or short automobile journeys. (An interesting footnote is that George Grossmith, as a singer and actor, created many of the best known Gilbert and Sullivan roles on stage).

Thoroughly Entertaining By David L Rattigan The 'Nobody' of the title is one Charles Pooter, an ordinary middle-class Londoner in the late 19th century who reasons that if Pepys and Johnson can write diaries to entertain people, why should his diary be any less exciting? And so we are amused by such characters as Pooter's unpredictable son Lupin, his good friends Cumming and Gowing, and not least Pooter himself, whose most fascinating and hilarious trait is his tendency to write people off as lacking in humour when they fail to laugh at his occasional pun, whilst exhibiting a distinct lack of humour himself when it comes to some of the more trivial aspects of life.Pooter's descriptions of the mundane, as well as the occasionally unusual, happenings of daily life are told in extraordinary detail, which brings a real vividness to some of the amusing predicaments our friend finds himself in. And he really is our friend by the end of the book. There is a certain air of pathos about this man that proves quite endearing. His Victorian prudery and sensibility provokes much laughter (reading this on the train to London, I had to put it down a couple of times to avoid drawing attention to myself), yet also provokes a certain affection for a character who is as tragic as he is admirable. That is, despite some of his more pathetic idionsyncracies, the warmth and genuineness of his character shine through.
