A bold line-by-line reexamination of the first 3 chapters of Genesis that reveals the essential nature of mind and creativity.

  • Deconstructs each line of Genesis chapters 1-3 with esoteric methods derived from the oral teachings of the Kabbalah
  • Reveals the sefirot, the Tree of Life, as the Divine blueprint of the creative process
  • Explains how Genesis reveals the Divinity of mind and consciousness
Hidden within the first three chapters of Genesis rests one of the greatest jewels of Western mystical literature. For millennia religious literalism has dominated our understanding of the Bible, imprisoning its subtle inner wisdom within the most coarse and superficial aspects of the narrative. Generations have been led to believe that Genesis 1-3 is only a primitive proto-cosmic history, a mythological explanation of the human moral disposition, a religious fairy tale. But by accepting the text as pure kabbalistic metaphor, the mystical content of Genesis springs forth, revealing the Divine nature of creativity as well as a new understanding of the human mind. Deconstructing each line of Genesis 1-3 with esoteric methods derived from the oral teachings of the Kabbalah, David Chaim Smith reveals how the ten sefirot, collectively known as the Tree of Life, are not simply a linear hierarchy. They are a unified interdependent whole with ten interactive functions, forming the template through which creative diversity manifests. Through acts of creation and creativity, the mind expresses its Divine nature. Through our Divine creative power, we are able to touch upon Ain Sof (the infinite), the lifeblood of all creative expression. Smith's line-by-line examination of Genesis 1-3 reveals a complete model not only of Divine creativity but also of the predicament of the human mind, of the Divine nature of consciousness as well as our inability to recognize the mind's Divinity. With this new interpretation, which removes the concept of a Creator God, we are able to transcend the contrasting notions of "being" and "non-being" at the heart of conventional habits of perception and awaken a new mystical understanding of Unity and the fathomless depth of Divinity.

The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis: Commentary on the First Three Chapters, by David Chaim Smith

Review The Luminous Space of David Chaim Smith: A Review of The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis When read literally, the Vedas seem like hymns, rituals, and magic spells devoted to many gods, goddesses, and spirits all seasoned in a warrior triumphalism. But the parabolic commentaries of the Upanishads and distillations of the epics and Puranas reveal a clearer vision of a dynamic nonduality which acknowledges the infinite variety of manifestation. This is Dharmic thought at its best. Kabbalistic tzaddikim, like Dharmic sages, are able to see nondual reality not merely through but active in the heart of phenomena.Unfortunately, many books on Kabbalah today reflect the largely dualistic habits of human thought. To use one of David Chaim Smith's favorite words, they use language patterns which tend to reify rather than liberate our conceptual frameworks. Smith's art has always served to undermine this tendency in the receptive viewer, and in the several interviews I have heard with the man I have always been impressed with his uncompromising push toward the luminous space of transpersonal Holiness.Unlike the endless literature of neo-nondualism, which often seeks to transcend sectarianism by merely abandoning the discipline of sect rather than digging deeply into it, Smith's writing in The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis does not shy away from the detailed analysis of kabbalistic teachings; and unlike much post-Golden Dawn "Hermetic" Kabbalah, Smith is not afraid of diving deeply into the Bible itself, as the gnostic container of kabbalistic wisdom. As the full title suggests, The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis: Commentary on the First Three Chapters presents a multilayered exploration of the first three chapters of the Bible's first book. In true kabbalistic fashion, each verse is picked apart by word and phrase, and then by numerology (gematria). This is not, as a famous modern occultist asserts, a game for confusing the cognitive faculty into abeyance, but is instead a very real flowering of gnostic insight. More, it is a means of making plain the interweaving natural to these concepts. Far from tricking the mind, gematria sets it to the very deliberate task of dissolving its own limitations. The Bible thus revealed is not different from the mind reading it: capable of opening or closing according to the angle of approach.David Chaim Smith's artwork is on display, here, small in number but representative in scope. All in grayscale, it resembles the famous alchemical woodcuts of the Renaissance though often more abstract in its composition. Though not integral to the text, the more complex pieces serve as powerful contemplative supplements, while the simpler diagrams directly illustrate the concepts being explored.Though slightly familiar with Smith's approach when I was offered a digital review copy of this book, I did not know what to expect from his writing style. His writing is clear but extremely dense. While concise and comprehensible, The Kabbalistic Mirror is no leisurely beach read. Far from a criticism, this is just a heads-up for the reader: be prepared to rearrange your brain.I recommend this book in particular for two audiences: occultists looking to understand kabbalistic roots, and the many people born into either Christianity or Judaism trying to find a deeper spirituality in the Bible. In any case, approach this book with fresh eyes; read it the way you might read a book on a totally unfamiliar mystical tradition. Find the memory of the first time you read Herman Hesse, Gustav Meyrink, or Tao Te Ching, and bring those eyes to The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis. The work required from even a cursory reading will be repaid manifold as David Chaim Smith reveals the inner significance of the biblical creation as a living myth rather than the dry bones of our cultural assumptions.-Purnacandra Sivarupa, Peace Profound

Being a student of kabbalah and Hermetic Science for some forty-odd years now, I believe I am safe in saying that, if you are pursuing these things, you know how difficult and tedious they can be at times. That being said, I must directly challenge you to read and study this work carefully. Having studied the ZOHAR and many other Kabbalistic source-works for many years, I can vouch for "Kabbalistic Mirror's" authenticity and faithful accuracy to the venerable ancient tradition, as well as viewing the whole thing from a very refreshing approach. Truly, as you read it, you may wonder if all of the ideas are truly grounded in Kabbalah. My answer is a resounding YES !! Dealing with the first three chapters of Genesis, this work is accurate, in depth and illuminating. Mr. Smith is a first-rate scholar, as well as a devout mystic, who has had access to rare & obscure Kabbalistic texts, some of which aren't yet available in English. His work WILL provide much needed insight into the core truths of Kabbalah, and is presented in such a way as not to insult the modern mind (although, in my humble opinion, the "modern mind" (so-called) could use a little shaking up every now and then). Dealing with the essential nature of spiritual perception and reality, it will surprise and delight. You may even see surprising parallels to modern quantum mechanics and particle physics! (Keep a copy of Mr. Hawking's "A Brief History Of Time" nearby). There are several good reviews of this work, and much more could be said here, but if you are truly seeking Light and Truth, you need this book! It is a true Gem in the Garden. (do I need mention WHICH garden?) This is an update written after the fact: Mr. Smith has since published two more books as companions to "Kabbalistic Mirror", entitled "The Sacrificial Universe" and "The Blazing Dew Of Stars". Both of these titles considerably expand & enhance "Kabbalistic Mirror"s" principles & teaching. With the addition of contemplative artwork, both are excellent companions and material for those who truly desire a truer and deeper understanding of Kabbalistic truths and worldview. They are a powerful combination, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

By Melchizedek After a long wait because of its initial limited availability this work is now in paperback again (also available from Daat press in London)! I was initially intrigued by David's art as a meditative tool while reading Leo Schaya and was motivated to research all his work online. I even purchased hardcover editions of his two subsequent works as well as two pieces of his artwork via Fulgur. I began to read his third work, THE BLAZING DEW OF STARS, and realized that this is a trilogy. So I stopped and waited patiently, reading a lot of Traditional school literature which led to Carlo Suares (again), and ultimately Aryeh Kaplan's works on Meditation in addition to Mark Verman's work on the Books of Contemplation and The Fountain of Wisdom (which I never would have even found had it not been for this author's indirect inspiration). The non-dual treatment of the three first three chapters of Genesis is phenomenal and David is to be congratulated for bringing us this work, out in the open where it belongs. His treatment of the material is masterful yet direct. He has captured multidimensional awareness in words, which is quite frankly simply brilliant. "Chutzpah!" in spades as a reviewer comments. The availability of this work to the general public marks a very important transition point in Kabbalah. There is even an intriguing presentation of the Cube of Space of which I am not familiar with (when you consider the traditional Planetary/Sephiroth attributions) and I look forward to his elucidation.Thank You David!AND Mazel Tov!

I must say I have only read to page 24 on which there is a picture of the Hebrew word ELOHIM...There are books that just have that ''magic", where they draw you in and you just want to read, put it down, and contemplate deeply....This is one of THOSE books!!! I have read and studied many religions since I was 13 and now am 41. Ramana Maharshi has been the greatest of Teachers for me..There are such great parallels to ATMA VICHARA and" Merging" back into the Hridayam from Ramana, to Spanda of the Kashmir Saivism School, all the way through the Kabbala that definitely show there is SOMETHING Radiant and Transcendent to our reality and life....This book by Mr. Smith shows the Kabbalistic side of the magic!!! It needs to be worked on, dug deeply into and experienced...One just needs the Desire and Grace from beyond to realize it NOW... Contemplating ELOHIM takes you to that place of NO-PLACE...Truly inspiring book....Not a Gershom Scholem type read, which for me does not make me want to read and meditate, but a Meditative/Contemplative work....EXCELLENT for seekers of all Traditions...

The dialogue flows and the action is fun. As a former teacher I would recommend it for ages 6-10. I am passing it on to my 10 year old grandson.

Are you on the subway? Sitting in an airport? Hiding out in some cheap motel, killing time, waiting for some vigilante justice? In the mood for murder? What about a little stalking in a sexy black outfit? Are you convinced your cat is hiding something? Are you dying? Not dying? Ready to hunt down Karla Homolka and have lunch? Why not live life on your terms? Go ahead and push that girl off the balcony. Lure that hot young guy from the office out into the woods. Then, pour yourself a glass of Barolo, light up a smoke and don’t answer the door. Don’t go in the basement and if you’re even thinking about owning a rental property, don’t do that either. In this collection of quirky dark shorts, you will laugh, cry and then move on with your busy day. The first 10% of this book is really good, after that, you’re on your own. Statistically no one reads beyond that anyway so who cares? I challenge you to read the whole thing but don’t expect you to commit to some really long, drawn out novel. These stories are based on true events as well as total bullshit. This is the first book in a series of other, even better books. If you like this one then stay tuned, give me some time on the beach and I will come up with 7 more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this book makes for a good tutorial for the "somewhat experienced beginner" looking to make ... By Cal Arts SUMMARY:In short, this book makes for a good tutorial for the "somewhat experienced beginner" looking to make exactly the same type of game that Mudslide Cowboy is. I would not recommend it for an absolute beginner or for someone who has already built a few of their own games. I would recommend it for the casual Stencyler who has done the crash course tutorials and read Innes Borkwood's Learning Stencyl 3.X Game Development: Beginner's guide. If you are just getting your feet wet with Stencyl and game design, and are looking to make a clone of Mudslide Cowboy and don't care much about how it works, just that it does work, then this book is perfect for you. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of game design principles, game logic, and programming technicalities then I suggest you move on. This book is very much like the books you see in arts and crafts stores. You know the ones like, "How to Draw Dragons" or, "How to Draw Manga". These books give you what you want on the surface level but do not explain in detail figure drawing, anatomy, color theory, etc. Read below for why.CONS:The author bills the book as having a "no-nonsense style, enabling you to get to grips with Stencyl in a fun, yet fast paced way" and it is. The author structures the book so that you get to setting up and creating the game relatively quickly but at the cost of explaining much of it. You will find irregular explanations of options and code structure. The rest of it is glossed over and you will just be snapping code together, forgetting about it, and then coming back to it at a later point to finish it. You won't know why it was set up that way and you will most likely not understand how it is working together (if you are a beginner). You are expected to just follow along to meet the book's goal of having you create a game quickly with no nonsense. This is typically what you find of many tutorials out there in the infinite universe of the Internet. It shows you how to build something (very well) but doesn't explain it for a deeper understanding. There are times in the book when the author assumes you know your way around Stencyl and forgets to tell you little things like click the ok button. A beginner will be utterly confused when the pop up menu being discussed in the book is not on the screen. In one part, it tells you specifically not to click anything. It does a nice little explanation of things and then it goes onto the next part of the process that cannot be seen unless you specifically click that button you were told not to. Once again, someone who is familiar with the program will know to click that button to go onto the next section. A person with no experience will be lost, at least for a little while, until they get brave enough to click that button.Values for the game are easy to mess up. If you are not careful to read every line you will mistake the necessary values due to screen shots. The screen shot may have one value but in the text there are instructions to change it to another value. You have to be extra careful.Infrequent testing. The game doesn't call for playtesting very much. You can easily find yourself at the end of a few chapters testing the game and discovering that it does not work. Too bad you made ten or fifteen modifications to the game during those chapters. Looks like you will have to back over each step to see what you missed. This shouldn't happen. Testing should happen more than the reader would want in order to keep the game moving forward and to keep the reader smoothly engaged. At certain points, you can tell the author is tired of writing this book. His instructions become this: Set up the code to look like what is in the screen shot. While I am a fan of this style, it is not a good option for beginners. They too easily look over the tiny little details, drop down menus, and similarly-named code blocks. At one point in Chapter 10, he mentions that the next chapter is the end of the book and Monetization and Publishing will be discussed. Then comes Chapter 11: Scoring and Game Rules. This really is a minor detail but it goes to show you the author was a bit tired by the end of the book. But that last part is probably the editors fault.PROS:Now that I have done a lot of complaining, I want to come out and say that I don't dislike this book. It just had some flaws that anyone looking to buy it should know about. The following is short but very powerful. Don't judge it by the length but by the context of it.I can't thank the author enough for his no nonsense way of writing. I applaud him for that. Too many books and tutorials spend their time going off the rails wasting time. I was able to get through this book in a couple of days on and off. If I committed myself to it, I could have probably finished reading it in an afternoon or so.When you do actually get explanations, they are concise, informative, and helpful. The author also provides good tidbits of information that will help trouble shoot during playtesting. For example: Being aware of placing blank tiles from the tileset in the level editor. This can cause a lot of time lost if you don’t know to look for it.The final chapter on Monetization and Publishing provides an excellent overview and starting point for anyone looking to take that next step. It talks about Android, IOS, different types of certificates, Ad extensions, Interstitial ads, Banner ads, etc. Very well done here. The code is set up intelligently. I am not a programmer by profession but I have programmed a few complex games and was delighted to learn a few things. Everyone programs differently and there is no right or wrong. Just better or worse. The author does a good, clean job of setting up the code in an understandable way that is easy to construct for beginners and gives more experienced individuals another option.NOTE:There are issues with Stencyl that will make the author seem like a liar. He isn’t a liar. He just cannot account for the myriad of tiny little things that can cause the reader to get stuck. For example, in Chapter 3 when you import the tileset it may not display properly in the editor. There is no mention of this in the book. You will have to simply adjust a single value to fix it. A person completely new to this would most likely be derailed and blame the author. Once again, it is not the author's fault. It is just the nature of the program.

By brenda o donovan Great book for anyone interested in beginning game development or even an experienced game developer looking to get to grasps with the Stencyl engine. Stencyl's a wonderful engine for making 2D games and this book is a fantastic resource for learning the ins and outs of the software. By the end of this book you will be savvy in using Stencyl and the logic of game programming in general. For me, it was the perfect first step to coding. I got to learn and understand how game programming works and now the thought of learning the likes of C# and C++ seems less daunting! Definitely recommended.

It is like having a person teaching lesson from the man himself. I use it as a reference book when preparing sermons or talks because there are so many insights, quotes, thoughts and ideas. You can just see by the notes that DL Moody had in his Bible that he had a deep love of God and His Word. If you are looking for something to freshen up you way of thinking or a great book just to spark off new ideas then this is the book for you. Great stuff! A real treasure in Christian books!!

Covington, Jr. There are two benefits included in this book: the historical collector's feature and the rich spiritual insights in the writing. These are notes D. L. Moody made in his Bible and their relevancy is very much still applicable. I found perspectives here that I have not read anywhere else.Moody connects various Scriptures together holistically, showing the relationship one has to the other. At times he juxtaposed contrasts such as: "If we are quiet, we shall hear. (Eccl. 9:17). If we hear, we shall be quiet (Prov. 1:33)" on page 191. And on page 72, "Fear should lead to faith. Faith should put away fear."In commenting on Psalm 4:7 he says, "The believer's heart is God's storehouse" (p. 65). This book is filled with commentary to add to your heart's storehouse. It will enhance the richness of your life.

D.L.Moody is a favorite of mine. He truly tried to follow as close to the Lord as any servant of God that I know of. His words from his Bible will bless anyone trying to walk closer to the Lord.

The author starts by adressing the subject of what depression is, the signs and symptomsto look for, the treatments and why regular medecine fails to cure depression, and finally the natural cures you can try. These include your diet, herbal remedies, supplements. The book is well written and presented. There are several images that I really appreciated especially for the herbal remedies. Overall, this book is well worth reading and is a great starting point for anyone wanting to know more about curing depression the natural way.

Review

Praise for The Ruby Way, Third Edition

“Sticking to its tried and tested formula of cutting right to the techniques the modern day Rubyist needs to know, the latest edition of The Ruby Way keeps its strong reputation going for the latest generation of the Ruby language.”

Peter Cooper

Editor of Ruby Weekly

“The authors’ excellent work and meticulous attention to detail continues in this latest update; this book remains an outstanding reference for the beginning Ruby programmer– as well as the seasoned developer who needs a quick refresh on Ruby. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Ruby programming.”

Kelvin Meeks

Enterprise Architect

Praise for Previous Editions of The Ruby Way

“Among other things, this book excels at explaining metaprogramming, one of the most interesting aspects of Ruby. Many of the early ideas for Rails were inspired by the first edition, especially what is now Chapter 11. It puts you on a rollercoaster ride between ‘How could I use this?’ and ‘This is so cool!’ Once you get on that rollercoaster, there’s no turning back.”

David Heinemeier Hansson

Creator of Ruby on Rails,

Founder at Basecamp

“The appearance of the second edition of this classic book is an exciting event for Rubyists–and for lovers of superb technical writing in general. Hal Fulton brings a lively erudition and an engaging, lucid style to bear on a thorough and meticulously exact exposition of Ruby. You palpably feel the presence of a teacher who knows a tremendous amount and really wants to help you know it too.”

David Alan Black

Author of The Well-Grounded Rubyist

“This is an excellent resource for gaining insight into how and why Ruby works. Assomeone who has worked with Ruby for several years, I still found it full of new tricks and techniques. It’s accessible both as a straight read and as a reference that one can dip into and learn something new.”

Chet Hendrickson

Agile software pioneer

“Ruby’s a wonderful language–but sometimes you just want to get something done. Hal’s book gives you the solution and teaches a good bit about why that solution is good Ruby.”

Martin Fowler

Chief Scientist, ThoughtWorks

Author of Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Amazing book and great reference guide. Helped me take my Ruby skills to another level! By James Hwang Just a basic background of myself. I've been programming in Ruby/Rails for a little less than 4 years (professionally for the past 2). This book discusses the advanced topics I was always more interested in but rarely got do touch during my 4 years. Topics like threads, basic network programming (not just what Sinatra or Rails just gives me), and GUIs are things I've always wanted to learn more about and this book covers them all. The great thing about it is it covers these topics in the perfect amount of detail and conciseness that gives me a good general understanding and ability to actually implement them in my daily activities. The threads chapter alone helped me create a simple script that called long running http requests all concurrently which reduced the time from a 2 hour script to a 2 minute one (the script was to verify a long list of http proxies). The other great part about this book is that it links the basic stuff I learned in my Computer Science courses in C++ with the language I've love (Ruby) but only been using at high levels of abstraction. This book has also helped me learn lower level languages like Golang because it brings lower level concepts to a language I'm familiar with.Definitely for intermediate or advanced Rubyists, if I were to have tried to read this when I first started programming in Ruby, I would have 1) been scared with its shear size and 2) been confused as hell since I never experienced the types of problems this book covers.

A welcome update to a Ruby Standard Reference By Lorin Ricker I've cherished my old dog-eared 2nd edition (pub. 2006) of The Ruby Way for many years now, but had typically withheld my recommendation of the book to new(er) Rubyists because the old editions left off with v1.8, possibly leaving more than a few new-to-coding folks a bit befuddled about comparatively minor version-dependencies and related issues. So, I was overjoyed to find this new 3rd edition, fully updated to Ruby v2.x! When my copy arrived, I was further elated to find that Fulton, together with his current co-author, André Arko, have taken the time and effort to fully update the book's content and organization -- far from "just a few tweaks" to justify cashing in on another edition, this new 3rd edition of The Ruby Way provides thoughtful, timely and relevant content, faithful to the style, purpose and quality of the earlier editions, but even better in so many ways.As an example, the authors' presentation of the basic issues of "Internationalization in Ruby" (comprising chapter 4) is one of the best expositions of, or about, this complex topic. Fulton and Arko neatly summarize the essential problem, provide the motivation for why-do-it, introduce several approaches to multi-language design, and neatly highlight the basic Ruby approach and tools for implementing I18N in a project or product. This chapter alone is worth the price of this edition.Other strong and valuable chapters include the ones on regexes (chapter 3), working with date and time data (chapter 7), enumerables and other advanced data structures (chapters 8, 9 and 10), a practical overview of GUI toolkits for Ruby (12), a great getting-started chapter on scripting and sys-admin with Ruby (14)... Well, there's really not a dud in the whole book. With the earlier editions, Fulton emphasized that The Ruby Way was never intended to be a Ruby language primer or beginner's/learner's training guide; instead the focus was (and remains) on language idiom, best practices, and practical guidance on the application of Ruby to problems both generic and specific. In this, I think he and Arko have succeeded again -- other reviewers generally and enthusiastically agree with this. And now that this new, updated edition of The Ruby Way is available, it goes back on my own list of the top-essential books about Ruby. Warmly recommended to anyone interested in this great language.

By Eron Ferreira A wonderful book.I've been studying Ruby for one year and half and this book was the best I found so far.I started reading this series at the second edition and was one of those lectures that really pleased me.The author gives a complete view of the Ruby programming languages, and makes us see how to use it the way it was designed for.

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, by Christopher James

Review "Christopher James displays in the third edition of this book all his knowledge on the so-called "alternative processes", and offers the reader historical data, formulas and visual examples, all explained with preciseness and clarity. The most interesting feature in this publication is that it opens perspectives for creative events, encourages the desire to explore techniques that are part of the history of photographic representation, and helps to articulate and to confer meaning on the desire of generating images in the present. In brief, his work allows us to visually explore existence and helps to understand the development of contemporary subjectivity."What a wonderful book! Clear and concise, with all the secrets of the dark arts in one volume. Call it the King James.""Christopher James' new edition has expanded right alongside the boom in interest in older techniques, as more and more contemporary artists reach backward to look forward. Covering processes from the first discoveries of the 1830's to the latest inventions and re-inventions, the book includes an astonishing breadth of work and a wide range of artists that show just how rich this field has become. If you need any proof that handmade photography is alive and well in the digital age, here it is, in spades.""The 1st edition set the standard for alternative photo books. The 2nd, was a real knockout, totally unexpected, I thought the 2nd was the landmark edition, that Mr. James could sit back and enjoy life again. Then this happened, the 3rd edition. It's like meal in a Michelin 3-star restaurant, the courses keep coming getting better and better. It's a book not only for a photographer making photographs with these processes, but an essential book for anyone concerned with photography. It should be in a handy reach of every curator, photography dealer, art critic, and photo historian. And lastly, it's just a good read, sit back and enjoy."“It’s a phrase that’s used too often but in this case it applies: every photographer -- everyone who cares about photography -- should have this book. Even if they never open it to check a formula. Not just because this is the bible for alternative processes or that it represents the fruit of a lifetime of study, teaching and practice by a master. This is also a document of great cultural significance. In an essential way, it shows us where we are – photographically, artistically -- in relation to our past and future. It casts an entirely new light on what it means to be “contemporary.” Lyle Rexer - Author, Educator, Critic, Historian Author of The Antiquarian Avant Garde, The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography October 2014“The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes: 3rd Edition is extraordinary. Not only in its scale, depth of research and richness of information, but in the way it is written. It makes complex information about chemistry and process spellbinding and weaves social and photographic history into a captivating read that is simultaneously entertaining, accessible and richly informative. This is no mean feat. As somebody who does not take photographs it has given me even more of an appreciation for those who used (and continue to use) these methods and to fully understand the beautiful magic of traditional and contemporary alternative processes of photography.” Susan Bright – Author, Educator, Assistant Curator of Photography National Portrait Gallery, London Author of Art Photography Now, Auto Focus, and Home Truths “What a wonderful book! Clear and concise, with all the secrets of the dark arts in one volume. Call it the King James." Keith Carter - photographic artist, scholar, author Author of 11 books inc. Fireflies, A Certain Alchemy, Ezekiel's Horse, and Keith Carter Photographs: Twenty-Five Years“Without a doubt this is the ultimate book on alternative photography. The 3rd edition is like meal in a Michelin 3 star restaurant… the courses keep coming, getting better and better. This is a book not only for a photographer making photographs with these processes, but an essential book for anyone concerned with photography. It should be in a handy reach of every, curator, photography dealer, art critic, and photo historian. And lastly, it’s just a good read, sit back and enjoy.” Dick Sullivan – artist photographer, author, chemist, entrepreneur, and founder of Bostick & Sullivan“Christopher James' new edition has expanded right alongside the boom in interest in older techniques, as more and more contemporary artists reach backward to look forward. Covering processes from the first discoveries of the 1830's to the latest inventions and re-inventions, the book includes an astonishing breadth of work and a wide range of artists that show just how rich this field has become. If you need any proof that handmade photography is alive and well in the digital age, here it is, in spades.” Dan Estabrook – photographic artist, scholar“Throughout the twelve years spanned by three editions of this book, we have watched Christopher James's manual grow – at the forefront of its subject in authority and comprehensiveness - in historical content and anecdotal humour – to the point where this third edition should now enjoy the status of a magnum opus: a unique sourcebook for practising the arts of 'alternative' photography, which have recently also taken the silver-gelatin medium under their wing. Paradoxically, this renaissance of arcane analogue skills draws strength from the contemporary revolution in digital imaging technology, as James shows us, due to the ease of picture manipulation by computer and the making of large negatives by ink-jet printer. Whether your chosen photochemistry for analogue imaging is based on salts of silver, iron, or chromium, or on plant dyestuffs or on photopolymers, natural and man-made, you will find here all the pertinent instructions that you need, pleasantly enlivened by the author's charismatic style and entertaining digressions, and richly illustrated by the work of artist-practitioners, both historic and contemporary.” Mike Ware – author, photographic artist, chemist, scholar“Christopher James displays in the third edition of this amazing book all of his knowledge on “alternative processes,” and offers the reader its cultural history, formulas and process, and visual examples from past and present, all explained with preciseness and clarity. The most interesting feature in this new edition is that it opens perspectives for creative events, encourages the desire to explore techniques that are part of the history of photographic representation, and articulates and confers meaning on the desire of generating images in the present. Christopher’s new edition allows us to visually explore existence and helps to understand the development of contemporary subjectivity.” Luis González Palma – photographic artist, author, scholar Author of 3 monographs including, Poems of Sorrow and El Silencio de la Mirada “Christopher James is a master of alternative photographic processes, and a magician at illuminating the role of the photographic image in contemporary society. Readers will be sure to enjoy James’ insight, knowledge, and personable and authentic writing style.” Xtine Burrough – author, photographic artist, scholar Author of Digital Foundations and Foundations of Digital Art and Design

Sullivan First an up front, some of my work is mentioned here, and I did work with Christopher on some aspects of the book, but sheese, I never expected this, one might consider this a defensive weapon in more ways than one!Books on photographic processes abound, history is full of them, some are good, some are bad, but only a few become landmark works. and this is one of them. Historically I can only think of Hasluck's "Book of Photography, Practical, Theoretic and Applied" 1905, with 700 pages and 900 illustrations, as anything coming close.I want to credit Christopher for putting each of these processes in their historical context. He has done that in each chapter, and when possible, he has added images made by the process being described in that chapter. Bravo! We are rapidly losing our connection to the history of photography. I have next to me, Beaumont Newhall's horrid "History of Photography." Neither the gum print, oil print, or Bromoil print, among many other major processes used by photographic artists, is listed in the index, or described in the text. Somehow Mr. Newhall thought that the process was irrelevant to the image. That lleads one to suspect he never made a hand coated image in his life.Photographic history from the bottom up is something sorely lacking in the contemporary oeuvre of photographic history. As I have said in the flyleaf blurb, this is a book that goes beyond being a darkroom guide. In a strong sense, this book is also a standalone work in photographic history. It is a useful reference for anyone professionally involved in photography. If you really want to be a photographer, (doing selfies on a cell phone does not really qualify you,) buy this book.Read it. Of course not in one sitting. You are allowed to skim through it and enjoy the images. Read the "A Little History" intro's. This will take a few sittings, a six pack or two, but at the end, you will know more photographic history than most teachers of photography. You will have shook hands with your forbears. You will connect to the women and men who developed these processes, and exploited them to make the great art legacy of the past. Silver gelatin enlarging was a major part of photography, however as an art form, many other processes were involved. Process often determines the art, yeah, I know, your teacher said that wasn't true, but if she did, she never made a gum print, that's for sure.Every serious photographer I know has a library of photography books. It may be it a roomful, or just a shelf. Any collection missing this book will appear quite naked.Dick Sullivan HonFRPSBostick & SullivanSanta Fe, New Mexico

The brand new Third Edition of Christopher James’ definitive “The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes” is that most rare of gifts, with equal parts inspiration for living a fulfilling creative life and recipes with practical advice for creating handmade photographs. A growing number of artists are exploring the moody imagery attained through alternative processes, thinking it better expresses what they feel than the optical perfection of a modern camera and workflow. This volume is James’ open invitation to join in a sustaining artistic journey marked by voracious curiosity, fearless critical questioning and a forthright promotion of play. That’s right, play. It is at the core of James’ philosophy of art and life, permeating all 28 chapters, over 800 pages and 700 delicious, edifying illustrations. In this major re-write of the first two editions, James expands his irreverent historical and personal narrative, adding enlightening perspective, and he brings the medium up to date by integrating new and historic processes, utilizing the latest innovations and techniques. And then there’s the art work - exciting and instructional - from James, his students and acknowledged leaders in the field (some of whom are former students), past and present. To read the complete, illustrated book review from "What Will You Remember?" photography review blog, go to: http://elinspringphotography.com/blog/the-book-of-alternative-photographic-processes-third-edition-by-christopher-james/

It's already like carrying around an unabridged dictionary. Unwieldy, yet irresistible, the next edition will be forced into two volumes (maybe three!).I waited months to get my hands on this. It was worth the wait. Extremely well-written and entertaining too, there is no doubt this is now the gold standard for what is currently called "alternative photography", but will no doubt be called something else in the near future. After all, silver based photography is in fact already an "alternative" to digital. And digital photography is now providing some of the tools needed to practice alternative techniques in greater depth. The great yellow father caused the brakes to be put on most of these "alternative" processes many years ago, and halted progress by amateurs via their repugnant secret keeping. I'm hoping that this book, and others like it, in addition to renewed interest in silver and a desire not to allow just one approach to take over again, will lead to renewed research and experimentation by photographers of all levels. If new and better processes don't result from the publication of this book, I will be very surprised.

This is my weight loss story, and my book is filled with pictures of my journey. You can see before, after, and “during” pictures inside. I was overweight, insecure and worst of all.. It seemed like I was destined to remain that way for the rest of my life. My mom was 219 pounds and 5'3 and I could have easily blamed my genetics for my 200 pounds in a 5"2 frame. I was overweight since I was a kid so there seemed to be no reason why things would change all of a sudden. I was the kind of person that would feel insecure.. and maybe even a little jealous around girls who were naturally thin and comfortable with themselves. I had tried for years to change my body but nothing seemed to work.. The idea of having a normal body or even a love life seemed like a distant dream that would likely never happen. And then came Audrey. What Audrey taught me not only helped me lose 70 pounds and gain the confidence to find the love of my life. It also helped me teach my mom how to lose weight. Over 50 years old, she also lost over 70 pounds herself! You can see pictures of her weight loss (as well as mine) inside the book. I want to share with you how I did it, so you can also get inspired and do the same. No matter how many pounds you need to lose, even if it’s 5, 10, 70 or more.. There is no reason (and no excuse) why you can’t do it! Let me show you how!

As someone who has struggled with weight and weight loss for almost two decades, I immediately felt connected to the author. She took me through her struggle and journey to lose the weight she had for so long tried to shed. She had to hit rock bottom first as many people do when they are struggling with any major problem, and she felt that being so heavy was indeed a huge issue in her life. She teaches the reader that in order to truly lose weight and maintain it, you have to restructure the way that you think and feel about food. For anyone who has been overweight like I am, that alone is a huge hurdle. The author takes the reader through her journey to revamp the way to eat and feel satisfied while still making good food choices, and how to replace bad foods with healthier choices. She also takes the reader through the very important aspect of weight loss which is setting goals for yourself. She suggests setting both short and long term goals. Short terms goals are quicker to meet and certainly easier, which keeps one motivated to stick to a weight loss plan. Long term goals help with motivation and endurance as well, making the idea of finally getting to goal weight seem attainable as well. The author had a great support system in place for herself throughout her journey, which is quite essential to success as well. Losing weight was a huge challenge for many years for our author, and she credits the success she was finally able to have to her close friends and family.I loved this book, both because it is centered around a subject both near and dear to my heart, and also because I welcome anything positive and motivational. No matter what issues any reader has in their lives at the time, it would be impossible not to be motivated and encouraged after reading this story.

What I didn't enjoy about this book were some of the shallow reasons, as in when the author reflects on how being thinner will get her a man. Or the fallacy of muscle weighing more than fat as her mentor Audrey warns her she may not lose as much once she starts working out in earnest. As somehow 16 ounces of muscle can weigh more than 16 ounces of really anything else. I'm really happy that Isabelle Zammit has lost weight, is healthy, and happy. I just wish there was more sound advice in this book.

Single square of napkin By Daleenabean isabelle felt the pressure of being overweight every time she went to a party, went shopping for clothes and heard "sorry we don't have that in a size 22" or looked at others she thought were naturally the skinny people. She decided to make a change on a single square of napkin and set out to meet her new goals. She made a pact with herself and went from over 190 pounds to 125 AND has the pictures to prove it. This is not your typical "follow this diet and do this exercise" kind of book.I loved it because it's true, it's real and she made it work but it was NOT easy for her and she stumbled, had tears of joy and sweat and biggest of all, she had support.Isabelle lost the weight she needed to be happy and not just using the common sense stuff but she goes into great detail with great ideas, again from her support group and person. For instance did you ever notice the outer edges of the grocery store holds the healthiest foods? I didn't but do now. That drinking the standard 64 ounces of water a day is not the standard for everyone? Take your body weight and divide by 2. That's how many ounces you should be drinking to keep your body working properly. Like a well oiled machine. (not all at one time though, like she did at first). The author uses Weight Watchers was one of her weight loss tools and helps you understand the points system and the importance of carbs (good ones), fat, calcium, protein etc. She found out a margarita can ruin the whole day.I can't help but feel proud of Isabelle. It was a huge struggle for her and there were hiccups, this didn't come easy, along the way but she worked through them. GET SUPPORT. You can't do it alone.Highly recommend this very honest and inspiring book. Loved the pictures. It all started with that single square of napkin. I gave this 5 stars because I really do love this book and will go back to reading it when I need help.Best of luck.
