Blending science and comedy, Browehs Before Yahwehs: A Secular Guide to Forgiveness, discusses how debate and ridicule impedes the progress of secular thought while giving an alternative strategy to changing religious minds. The book uses a postmodern narrative to illuminate forgiveness through satirizing the "just-so stories" espoused by religion and evolutionary psychology. By dwelling on the past and ancestors, religion and evolutionary psychology minimizes humankind’s potential to create meaning in the present for a better future. Discussion between secular people and religious individuals turns toxic when the only conversation on the subject of religion is debate and/or ridicule. The book contextualizes religions’ attempts to explain forgiveness and advocates for understanding of scientifically illiterate people throughout history, who probably suffered from PTSD. Science can clarify the imperfect examples of forgiveness in religious texts and help to give people what they want in life: social connection. "Just because an individual has the capacity to grasp the moment of The Big Bang, the slow gradual nature of evolution, or the ins and outs of Jaime Lee Curtis’ digest system because of Activia yogurt, does not mean that he or she has an iota of scientific insight regarding forgiveness." Each of the book's six chapters outlines a different aspect of the forgiveness process by introducing pop-culture-themed neurological metaphors. The book gives the reader a humorous understanding of the daily practice of forgiveness as an effort to create meaning in the present by abandoning sentimental stories of the past.

Brook Ogden has never encountered a broken heart she couldn’t patch together…

Her counseling practice as the Breakup Doctor—on call to help you shape up after a breakup—is so busy she’s expanded to offer group sessions. (Turns out there are far more than fifty ways to leave your lover.) Her radio show and advice column have made her a local celebrity, and even her personal life, after some gruesome breakups of her own, is in recovery: Ben Garrett started out as a revenge date against an ex, but has turned into so much more.

But when sizzling-hot Chip Santana, an old client she once shared a rather unprofessional midnight roll in the sand with, comes back into her life asking for her help, Brook can’t say no. Yet while she’s busy stitching up his relationship troubles, Chip reveals much more than a therapeutic interest in her.

In the standoff between her heart and her hormones, Brook’s cool, collected Wise Therapist persona begins to crack like thrown wedding china. She’s yelling at recalcitrant cheating husbands. Offering crazy advice to radio callers. She’s even hugging her clients.

When the situation goes critical, Brook’s forced into a decision she isn’t ready to make—and the Breakup Doctor has to decide what kind of casualties she’s willing to accept.

In the second book of the series Brook Ogden's relationship therapy sessions have really taken off now and she is now holding group counselling sessions to a great mix of different people, all with one thing in common… They are in desperate need of help with their love lives and it is up to Brook to take on the challenge and help them through their relationship issues. Only her own relationship status is just as complication and she is confused and torn between two men, dependable Ben who she feels would be her perfect match and finding herself drawn to undependable Chip who could bring even more complications to add to the calamity. This is a nice and easy read. Hilarious in parts and with some fantastic characters who really make the story a lively and good read. You do not have to read the first book in the series but I recommend that you do as that is also a fabulous read.

By littlemissrockstar My review of BEDSIDE MANNERS was originally posted at my blog, Traveling With T. No compensation was received for my review.Traveling With T requested this book via Netgalley for review consideration.Bedside MannersBrook Ogden, the therapist we met in THE BREAKUP DOCTOR, is back! People are still breaking up and Brook is still helping them- via radio, group therapy and occasionally diving into help in a more hands-on role.Brook is pretty happy- she’s dating Ben, her work is going well and her best friend, Sasha, is finally in a good relationship! (The only teensy flaw is that it’s with Stu, Brook’s brother, and sometimes she craves girl time with Sasha). But, things are pretty much coming up roses for Brook. Until… Chip, the sexy as hell bad boy from the previous book rears his head again. He connects with Brook in a semi-professional way- attempting to trying to make things from his past right. Along the way, he reveals a less than professional interest in Brook- and that leaves Brook in a bind. She’s involved with a man that is everything she should want and yet is attracted to another man.Brook finds out quickly that Pat Benatar is right and that “love is a battlefield”- and has to make some hard choices that have long term consequences. Is a happy ending in Brook’s future- and if so, will it look like what she thinks it should?Traveling With T’s Thoughts:Ahh, Phoebe Fox- you do it again! Your second book is so cute! So, first things first- the cover! I really enjoy Phoebe’s covers- they are fun, bright and fresh looking! On to the story: Brook is not a character that does things the easy way. She’s got to fully break-down in a million pieces- and then she picks herself up. Part of the book focuses on her relationship with her mom- why it’s not as good as Brook wishes. Her mother leaves her with some advice that makes Brook think on things- and helps clarify her current romantic struggles. And Sasha- Brook’s bestie. Sasha is loveable, Sasha sees things that Brook is unwilling to admit- and while she could have said “I told you so”- that’s not Sasha’s style. She’s there for Brook- through the good and the bad.I really liked the whole Stu/Sasha relationship. Sasha is proof that kissing a ton of frogs will lead to your happy place!Brook, even though she did make mistakes in BEDSIDE MANNERS, did show some growth and I’m eager to see where Phoebe takes her in the next book! Are you looking for a fun and cute book? Something that is a nice and easy read? Put BEDSIDE MANNERS on your reading list!*Traveling With T requested a copy via Netgalley from Henery Press. All thoughts and opinions are mine alone.

Review: 'Bedside Manners' by Phoebe Fox By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" After surviving her own devastating break-up, Brook Ogden has managed to start up her own successful business as the Breakup doctor; there to help others to get through any kind of relationship break-up. Next to her own weekly radio show and an advice column, Brook is now also planning on organising her own group therapy sessions and she can’t wait to help others with their relationship troubles. However, Brook also has her own love life to deal with. She’s dating the lovely Ben and after meeting his dog Jake and his mother Adelaide, Brook has a good feeling about their future together. Until one of her old clients, Chip Santana, gets back in touch with her and asks Brook for her help so he can finally deal with his previous break-ups. Brook still feels some heat between Chip and her and she knows she should avoid him, but somehow she can’t say no. Brook will need to make some important decisions in her life, which requires her to not just focus on other people’s troubles in love, but her own as well...‘Bedside Manners’ is the second part of Phoebe Fox’s ‘The Breakup Doctor’ series and from the first few chapters I loved once again having a story starring protagonist Brook Ogden to get stuck in. The author really managed to create a great cast of fascinating characters in the first novel, and I loved reading more about them and their adventures. I found it incredibly easy to warm to Brook; she’s a flawed heroine, but this makes her realistic, relatable and I could just easily imagine being friends with her. The book includes some other lovely characters such as the lovely Ben (the guy Brook is dating) and Brook’s best friend Sasha, but if I have to name one character that stole my heart it has to be Ben’s dog, Jake. He was just incredibly crazy and sweet, and I just fell in love with him (and I’m not even a dog person!).Phoebe Fox’s writing is perfect for a chick lit novel and I really enjoyed her style; it’s really easy to get into, detailed enough, funny in the right places, and just flows incredibly well. I loved the fact that there were separate storylines to focus on, such as Brook’s love life and her new group therapy sessions, but also her relationship with her mother and the new love between her best friend Sasha and brother Stu. I personally prefer to always read the first book in a series first, but I suppose you can also jump into the story without any trouble by picking up this novel first instead. The ending of the story definitely leaves room for a third novel, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that. Overall, ‘Bedside Manners’ is a wonderful second part of this thoroughly entertaining chick lit series; an entertaining and fun read which comes highly recommended!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. All-In-One reference book for organisational developers and process experts By M. Rumpler The book fully satisfies the expectations one can have in a book with the title "Kanban Change Leadership"The first part spans a bridge from what Kanban is, where its origins are, how it works and what are the possibilities one has when using the Kanban method. The great thing is that it is written without losing ground and slip to esoteric realms. The book shows all practices and methods as described by David Anderson but adding a lot of value by bridging the gap to practical examples and ideas how to bring the theory to life. Very well placed pieces of Viennese charm make the book at the same time entertaining and informative to read. The second part adds an important component which is often missing in similar books. The component of how to develop an organisation. It shows traps and pitfalls one could face when working as a change agent. Doing this is important that employees do not "skillfully surf the wave of change". This part of the book serves as memorial and guideline for the change agent to have the do's and don'ts and help to see signs of systemic causes often making change initiatives fail. The essential aspects of people-driven systems are explained with a lot of practical examples without missing the theory behind. The broad experience of the authors made them bring to life a very good overview and interconnection of lots of methods in the necessary depth. The third part holds a big number of real-world examples that illustrate how to work with the tools and methods described in the first two parts. This is done by depicting real-world scenarios from practical experience of the authors, insights that bring unmatched value to the reader. The diversity of examples gives a clear view that there is not "the one and only real and non-changeable method" that is the silver bullet. A change initiative is mainly driven by the people involved. Everybody that has led or participated in a change initiative inside a company will for sure find some similarities to things experienced by themselves. This part is a perfect source of ideas when running into problems during a change initiative. It shows how one can deal with situations popping up during a change initiative showing how experts (the authors) have faced this issues. There is no single recipe that fits all situations and this is very well shown in this part where similar issues are faced using different methods depending on the people involved. As a summary I personally think that this book is the "practical guide" how to realise change initiatives based on the more theoretical book by David Anderson about the Kanban method. It definitely helps people in how to understand the "magic" behind change initiatives and offers lots of tools and methods to be used.

As Kanban finally begins to hit the mainstream and the number of new book about it increases finding a new book that actually adds value is a breath of fresh air. In addition to revising the Kanban method in a ver eloquent way, IMHO their main contribution is on the practical side at corporate level regarding the challenges we all confront, either as part of an organization or as consultants helping customers with change and improvement, from the human nature perspective. They knit together those aspects with how Kanban helps pass those hurdles. The read is also entertaining so time flies faster than the pages. I put this book up there with those from David Anderson, Jim Benson and Mike Burrows. Mike's book treats the human side as well but from a Kanban perspective whereas this book sees it from the customer perspective. They both complement each other well.

It requires continuous improvement, learning and leadership to be able to handle this change appropriately. Kanban Change Leadership gives insights how this works. At the beginning Kanban is explained in detail. The first part of the book describes practices and principles of Evolutionary Change Managements and shows why all these are so important.Part 2 focusses on Change and Leadership. The authors write about fear, anger sorrows, challenges, aggressions because this is usually what change agents have to deal with.Part 3 dives deeper into the topic of Change and Leadership and gives the reader ideas of how to change his/her leadership-style to better handle change. The German version of this book became a must read book for every knowledge worker who wants to improve and face today’s business challenges. Now this is also available for the English speaking world. My conclusion… “KANBAN rocks”... also for leadership-topics! :-)

Kim This book is outstanding.KDB+ is a very powerful system, but newcomers can be intimidated by two things: its steep learning curve and the seeming lack of organized introductory material. When I was learning KDB, I considered two resources to be indispensable: First Derivatives "KDB+ Reference Manual" and Boror's "Q for Mortals." Psaris' new text is a VERY welcome addition to that collection.Psaris' book will gently start you with the basics, and then lead you into more powerful examples. The book is very well organized, and I especially enjoyed his explanations as to the rationale as to why KDB does things the way it does. KDB's error messages ("`type"?) can be cryptic, but Psaris' book helped my understanding quite a bit.I bought a copy for myself, but I also bought a copy for my colleague because this book is a godsend for people new to Q. If you're in the same position I was in - experienced in C/C++/Java (but not in any array programming languages); some development/DBA experience in Oracle or MySQL and you think KDB will be more of that same (it most certainly will not); and you have to learn KDB+ - this book will help you immensely.

For courses in computer science and programming

Starting Out with Java: From Control Structures through Data Structures provides a smooth introduction to programming with Java that moves fluidly from beginner to more advanced topics. The first half of the book is taught for a CS1 course and teaches fundamental programming and problem solving concepts, while the second half, meant for a CS2 course, teaches advanced topics, algorithms, and data structures.

The Third Edition is extremely flexible in its organization, which teaches programmers to implement data structures with or without generics. As with all text in Gaddis’ Starting Out series, the tone is friendly, the material detailed, and major concepts easy to understand. With rich examples throughout, programmers learn to use Java through real programming practice.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. There are better Java textbooks By Keith After using this text for one semester as an adjunct instructor, I have to say that there must be, I hope, better books for both students and instructors. For a 3rd edition, it's surprising that there are still some inaccuracies in the text - even the online version. And the test bank is really not a good assessment tool, and has questions which are poorly worded, and several even with incorrect answers. Considering that [test bank] is also an online source for instructors that should be corrected by now, it suggests that the publisher does not really care about this topic as much as the price suggests. And, the online access period for students who purchase the book or the online version (much cheaper) is only 6 months, even though the book states, and the mere size suggests, it is designed for at least a 2 semester course. Poor students! Buy a book for the better part of $200, but the online material won't be available for the 2nd semester of the class... Oh, but you can *buy* additional access from the publisher, of course. My third nit, as an instructor, is that the book is littered with "Checkpoints" that require access to myProgrammingLab (.com), but that is an additional cost item. Open your wallet. Finally, the book is very late in bringing modern UI concepts, i.e., windows, et al, into the picture. Since much of the current interest in Java is its applicability to mobile devices, this text, or courses that use it, may not be what you are looking for if learning to write Android apps is your primary goal. (It could serve that purpose, but clearly not what the text is targeted towards, and a dash to get there even in 2 semesters.)

The book also discusses the latest research being done on psilocybin at many top universities, which have shown promising results in the treatment of OCD, depression, & anxiety. These studies have also shown a correlation between taking psilocybin and having mystical experiences. Due to these findings, the book also explores how psychedelic plants were used throughout history by numerous religious groups.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. an interesting personal story from a good story teller, yet could have been better with a broader perspective By Muttley I received this book two days ago as an email attachment from the author with a request to review it if I find it interesting. Normally, I hesitate writing reviews for books and movies due to my concerns about being objective and informative. However I still started reading the book after having a look at the short description. This is a fairly short book (113 pages in epub format and the word count is 32500 'as stated by the author in the initial email') It took me 3-4 hours to completely read it. I normally get distracted a lot if I don't find the subject interesting, yet this was a really interesting book and I really enjoyed the time I spent reading it. The writer is a good story teller and especially the first half of the book where he totally focuses on his memories and the mushroom experience, it feels like the guy is talking to you directly. It is very well written with a simple English and uncomplicated sentences. You really get into the atmosphere he describes. It starts with a guy that grew up in rural Florida in the heart of nature. That is the time he first encountered the mushroom through a friend and used it for a while for recreational purposes. In this chapter, I find the psycho-somatic effects of his first experience very detailed and for a person like me whose only recreational experience is a beer once in a few weeks, it was such an interesting part to read. Then it jumps to a time period in which the author has turned into a young adult, away from the childhood surrounding, in a rather monotonous office job. That part of his life was not very rewarding, full of failures in job and personal relationships and with all signs of a major depressive episodes blunting him for most part. Your life goes downward and yet you can not do anything to get it go up again... That section is also written in an informal monologue format but in a grasping way that I felt so much sympathy for him and really wished him to get out of that paralyzing misery (especially the failed birthday celebration was touchy). Then comes the section that he describes the high dose mushroom experience and again it was as detailed as the first encounter that he mentioned in his teenage years. He describes this experience as a single cure of treatment that created a turning point in his life and erased all the negativity and let him move forward. Then he becomes more scientific and gives results of the 'limited' research on psilocybins and how mushroom treatment help some psychiatric patients improve. But I have to say that that part is written in a rather subjective fashion focusing only the positive effects that were observed through some limited scope studies within the last 50 years or so.That is one of the main criticisms I can make towards the writer. I wished he would at least mention about the problems about using magic mushrooms which you can learn easily at least by doing a small google search. There has been many reports focusing on teenagers hunting out for magic mushrooms to get high for free but end up eating poisonous 'look a like' ones and become severely sick if not dead. Another point of criticism is that he is advocating mushroom use based on his personal experience of it being a magical cure for his depression but there is a possibility that that might be the magical trigger for him to get into depression to begin with. We don't know the mysteries of human brain yet. Something that can tear you out of reality and distort all your perception must be changing the dynamics in your head really significantly . There are many neurotransmitters that need to be in a certain balance for proper mood functioning and altering them through recreational drugs or even with prescribed ones can cause long term effects. For example it was recently proved that increased hallucinogenic substance use among teenagers lead to increased incidence of schizophrenia in the years to follow. You can also find examples of hallucinogen induced mood disorders, anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders in many references. However, all these parts are overlooked through out the book and that I find critically misleading for many people out there who suffer from similar diseases and wish to cure themselves as the author did. I am not saying that these mushrooms can not be used to help with people like the author who suffer from depression and I am sure they really helped him to get out of that problematic part of his life. But it is equally likely that the author, after reading a lot from Terence McKenna (he refers to him a lot through out the book) really used mushroom as a tool for his self imposed psychotherapy and conditioned himself that he will get out of these problems by this magical cure once and for all...Next chapter is about authors ideas about how his 'out of body' and depersonalization experiences could have been used by early people to establish foundations of modern religions. That set of well advocated thoughts are really inspiring and show that the writer is a curious thinker with creative ideas rather than a sheep like many others. I find that chapter really interesting and a fun read. Yet again the next chapter he goes a step ahead and tries to link the whole history of mankind to use or ban of mushrooms which I found rather loosely attached and not well supported set of ideas. I might have missed out some parts but he somehow thinks that the abandonment of ancient Greek customs including full of mushroom use as one of the factors for the lack of creativity and continuous violence during the middle ages and yet re-introduction of Greek ways (also he implies mushrooms) by renaissaince as the cause of creativity turning back to earth again. This is a rather too simple explanation for explaining a too complex part of the human history.Later in the book he gives more examples of the medicinal use of various other hallucinogens through out the history and that is also a well researched chapter with lots of information for those who are interested. He finally puts a recap of his ideas and why he advocates the legalization of magic mushroom.Whether it should be legalized or not is a debate that is beyond the scope of this review however, at the end of this book I felt that I learnt something and moreover that book put me think and search in a field that I was not personally interested to start with. My only worry is that if one million people read this book and go out to the wild to try it for themselves to solve their problems, a significant number of them may really benefit but another significant number would end up suffering from poisoning, acute effects of losing self control including harming themselves or the surrounding, or may be the long term consequences like residual depression or similar problems. I wished the author should have pointed out these possible harms as well as the possible benefits.Despite the fact that it could have been written better by putting opposite opinions about the mushroom use rather than focusing only the positive effects, I really found this book a good read to get an idea about one person's individual experiences by mushroom use and how he thinks it changed his life.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. `To those who dream the impossible' By Grady Harp Florida author Brian Jackson has a Bachelor's Degree in Finance and works as an income tax preparer and a designer of websites, but his mission in this book reflects his interests writing and debating about alternative energy, religion, politics, sports, philosophy, and ancient history. He's previously contributed to content that's been featured by Current TV, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Daily Kos.In this fascinating book Brian shares his personal experiences with magic mushrooms - a rather colorful memoir about past times when psychedelic drugs were popular in the 60s and 70s and the influence of that period on him. But he uses his own experimentation with psilocybin as an introduction to allow us to reconsider the positive uses of a drug once considered criminal. As he states, `The goal of this book is to share my story in support for the use of psilocybin as a medicine. We will also explore the most current medical research to date being done with psilocybin and look into its possible role in the formation of early religion. There's something truly magical about psilocybin mushrooms that we still haven't quite figured out. Those unknown mysteries have always drawn me to them.'What Brian accomplishes here is an introduction to those readers unfamiliar with psychedelic drugs and psilocybin in particular. `The effects of psychedelic mushrooms can be attributed to a unique substance they contain, called psilocybin. Psilocybin is a psychedelic compound in the tryptamine family, which closely resembles serotonin. Psilocybin has been classified as a Schedule 1 drug in the United States and is illegal in many other countries. As with marijuana, there's never been a known overdose from this naturally occurring substance. Psilocybin itself is actually quite safe to consume, but like all psychedelics, the users set and setting play a large role in the outcome of the overall experience. In a comfortable environment , at the proper doses, the encounter can be euphoric and even mystical. If taken in the wrong setting, occasionally psilocybin mushrooms can produce paranoia , anxiety, and fear. As a result of poor understanding of the drug by many early users and the government's fear of their possible misuse in the future, a negative stigma was formed around psychedelic drugs that's been hard to shake for almost 50 years.'His `medical' powers he discovered in his drug of choice he shares, `The way I view the world on a day to day basis has changed for the better after taking this ancient mushroom medicine. I'm not sure if anything else could have given me these results so quickly and I couldn't possibly have imagined such a drastic positive change only a short time ago. As you'll read, mushrooms don't only act as a medicine , but also as a spiritual guide. Psilocybin's a key that can open doors to an entirely new world. An infinite amount of knowledge and understanding awaits those willing to travel into those realms.'Brian goes into the medical investigation experiments with psilocybin and he shares the history of mushrooms and the uses for many years by many societies and he accompanies all of this informationwith many colorful photographs. At book's end he states, `I've known hundreds of good people who've had both traumatic and smaller events send them into bouts of depression and anxiety, sometimes completely crippling their lives. I've seen pretty girls who won't go out because of their perception of themselves. I've met numerous other individuals who go to certain places only late at night, in order to stay hidden from the world. Many of these people, from an outsider's perspective, look perfectly normal and content, but in their own mind are secretly in a constant state of misery or panic. I've also seen the effects of PTSD and the issues caused by antidepressants firsthand. There is a better way to solve this problem and psychedelics will undoubtedly play a large role in the future. With so many people suffering from these symptoms, we owe it to ourselves as a species to investigate every possible solution. When individuals are again able to consume entheogens without fear of jail or social persecution , the world will undoubtedly become a more peaceful place. Trust me.'Very interesting reading form a man brave enough to place this information before a waiting world in need of medical advances. Grady Harp, March 15

WHY WE LOVE IT: John Allison is well known for his funny and intelligent webcomics Bad Machinery and Scary Go Round. His story of three friends at university lightly flavored with the occult features some of the best dialogue in comics, and we couldn't help but think it's like Monty Python goes to college. Sign us up! WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: John Allison's daily webcomics are hilarious, the kind of strips where every panel makes you laugh out loud. As a result, John has earned a large, loyal following of readers that have followed his work daily for the past 12 years. This is a series fans of things like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scott Pilgrim, or Gunnerkrigg Court will not want to miss. WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends because their dorm rooms were next to each other. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of hand-wringing boys, "personal experimentation," influenza, mystery-mold, nu-chauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of "academia," they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive.

If you're you're wanting to use the line between everyday and science fantasy as a skipping rope, this is that rope. It lacks something of Scarygoround and Bad Machinery, but what it lacks is less than half a star, so it still rounds to five.If surreal is what you pour milk on and eat for breakfast, John Allison is the best cartoonist out there.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SUSPENSE MAGAZINERita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown return with a mystery starring Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen, intrepid kitty sleuths Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker, the ever-faithful crime-solving corgi. This time around, Harry and her animal friends track a killer whose trail has gone as cold as the weather in December.   NINE LIVES TO DIE   Winter has come to Crozet, Virginia, bringing with it a fresh blanket of snow. Harry and her husband, Fair, are hip deep in their usual end-of-the-year activities: distributing food to needy residents, and shopping for outfits for the Silver Linings youth organization’s annual fundraising gala. But buried beneath the white stuff are dark secrets from Crozet’s past—and Harry and her posse of pet detectives are determined to sniff them out.   Two Silver Linings mentors have been found dead in suspicious circumstances. If that weren’t enough to chill the bones of the locals, a pair of severed human fingers has turned up in a pencil jar in the bookkeeper’s office at St. Cyril’s church. What does this grisly display have to do with the mysterious disappearance of Harry’s voluptuous high school Latin teacher, a quarter of a century ago? Maybe nothing. But when the animals make another gruesome discovery in the woods behind Harry’s farm, it becomes clear that terrible crimes have been committed in Crozet—and somebody’s gone to great lengths to cover them up. It’s time to stop shoveling snow and start digging for clues.   The truth will be revealed. A cold case will be solved. And a twenty-five-year-old love triangle is about to get untangled. The weather outside may be frightful, but Harry and her four-legged friends refuse to be spooked off the case.Praise for Nine Lives to Die  “Witty and entertaining . . . a recipe for continued success and an engaging read.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch   “The unabashed loves of [Rita Mae Brown’s] life . . . are infectious. She murmured, “Maybe something less exuberant for the calendar—just a red-letter day?”“Do you remember when Miss Donleavey lectured us about red-letter days on the ancient Roman calendar?” Susan rolled her eyes.BoomBoom, Susan, and Harry had been in the same class at old Crozet High School. While the buildings still stood, students now attended Western Albemarle High School, a large complex consolidating former small community schools. Jessica Hexham, Alicia Palmer, Charlene Vavilov, and Arden Higham had not. Jessica had attended Miss Porter’s; Alicia, Orange High School; Arden, Buckingham High; and Charlene, older than the others, had attended St. Catherine’s in Richmond. With the exception of Jessica, all were central Virginia natives. Jessica, born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, often found them amusing while contradictory at times, and they were reliably solid friends.“Alea jacta est,” Susan pronounced with emphasis.Harry translated. “The die is cast. Said when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 B.C. at the head of the Thirteenth Legion. He knew civil war would follow.”“Talk about a red-letter day,” said BoomBoom.“Isn’t it something, though, how a device thousands of years old still works, I mean, a red-letter day? God bless Miss Donleavey. She taught us well.”Jessica also recalled her Latin teacher at the expensive private school, perhaps less fondly. “I would never bless Miss Greely.”The others laughed.“Charlene, bet you took Latin at St. Catherine’s,” Alicia wondered.“You couldn’t go to college without two years of it,” said Charlene. “I took four. It’s helped me more than I could know when I hated memorizing those conjugations.” She laughed.“Funny, isn’t it?” the uncommonly beautiful Alicia said. “What we use? What we remember?”“What I remember, apart from amo, amas, amat, was Miss Donleavey’s mysterious disappearance. Never found her.” Harry picked up the cards to shuffle.Susan reached across the card table, placing her hand on Harry’s forearm. “Don’t you dare.”“Huh?” Harry blinked.“I’ll shuffle.”“Are you calling me a cheat?” Harry’s voice rose.“No, but you won the last hand, so it’s my turn to shuffle. Plus, what if you have a hot hand?” Susan used the gambling term.“I’d better tell that to my husband.”This evoked more laughter. The lights flickered, once, twice, then no light.“Dammit,” Susan cursed the dark. “Stay put, ladies. I’ll get the candles.”“You need my little flashlight.” Harry reached into her pocket, pulling out a two-and-a-half-inch LED flashlight made in China.Susan pressed the button. “Wow.”“What else do you have in your pocket?” Jessica asked.“One pocketknife,” BoomBoom answered for Harry. “She always has a pocketknife and a little money.”“The emphasis is on little,” said Harry, emptying her pockets onto the card table as Susan returned with candles.“Let me help you.” Thanks to the tiny LED flashlight, Alicia could see. She reached for some candles.“There’s a hurricane glass lamp. Well, here, let’s do it together. Girls, we’ll be right back.”True to her word, Susan and Alicia returned to the living room with small brass candleholders, which they placed about and lit. The large hurricane candleholder glowed on the card table. All held six- to eight-inch candles.Susan noticed the small pile of debris.“Harry, what’s your stuff doing on the card table?”“Jessica wanted to know what was in my pocket.”“In the dark?” Susan questioned.“We knew there’d be light,” Harry shot back.Jessica dutifully investigated the contents: one Case pocketknife, a folded cotton handkerchief, twenty-two dollars in small bills, one dog cookie.Harry pointed out the cookie. “Never know when I might get hungry.”The ladies laughed again as Alicia walked to the large triple-sash windows. “Girls, we’re in for it.”“No kidding?” Harry hurried over, as did the others.“The storm’s early.” BoomBoom, like all country people, paid intense attention to the weather.“We have a little time before we need to worry about the roads,” Harry confidently predicted. “Everyone has four-wheel drive, right?”“If not, I’m happy to sell you one.” Charlene smiled. She and her husband, Pete, owned the Ford dealership.“We’re good,” the others replied.“Well, let’s not play cards by candlelight. Ladies, I whipped up vegetable hors d’oeuvres, and they’re really tasty, if I do say so myself. I can’t eat them all. You have to help me. Harry, use your flashlight again and let’s bring the food out from the kitchen. BoomBoom, you know where the bar is. Give the girls what they want.”BoomBoom picked up a candle as she glided to the well-stocked bar. Susan’s husband, Ned, was a delegate to the state legislature in Richmond, and the couple entertained frequently. In this part of the world, good liquor was considered an essential by any host and hostess. Southerners did drink wine, but many still preferred a high-octane bourbon or scotch, and then there were the legions of vodka drinkers who believed it didn’t linger on their breath.Once settled in the living room, comfortable in decidedly not-modern décor, Jessica, curious, asked, “So what did happen to your Latin teacher?”“Nobody knows.” BoomBoom shrugged. “She disappeared after a Friday-night football game. Her car was in the parking lot. Monday, she didn’t come to school.”“We played the Louisa Dragons that night,” Harry recalled. “Good game. Miss Donleavey never missed a football game.”“She dated the coach, Mr. Toth,” Susan filled in. “Handsome, handsome, handsome.”“Coach Toth? That Toth?” Jessica asked. “Silver Linings?” She mentioned a youth organization the coach supported, as did all the husbands of the women in the room. Apart from helping young men, business leaders and former athletes ran Silver Linings. To belong was beneficial to one’s career.“Jessica, this must be irritating, being in the middle of a bunch of old friends.” Harry handed her a napkin.“No, it’s fascinating. A vanished Latin teacher.”“You know the stereotype of the old-maid Latin teacher? Well, not Miss Donleavey. She was voluptuous, raven-haired, so pretty,” BoomBoom noted, herself voluptuous.“Suspects?” Jessica’s eyebrows raised.Miranda answered. “At first, people thought it might have been a rival of the coach’s. Men were crazy for her.”Susan added, “Lots of men were questioned. Everyone had an alibi.”“Anyone else?” Jessica persisted.“Esther Mercier. Hated Miss Donleavey, just hated her.” Harry bit into a carrot incised with a tiny trench filled with rich cream cheese.“In love with Coach Toth.” BoomBoom filled in facts. “An attractive enough woman, but not in Miss Donleavey’s league.”“What was her first name?” Jessica asked. “Miss Donleavey?”“Uh, Margaret. It’s funny, but I still have a hard time calling my teachers by their first names. I mean, Coach Toth is always Coach Toth.” Susan smiled. “And eventually he did marry Miss Mercier, one of the math teachers.”“You’d think someone would have known something. Crozet is still a small place,” Charlene wondered.“If they did, no one noticed. Crozet, like any place anywhere in the world, is full of secrets that people take to their graves,” Harry remarked. “Miss Donleavey’s kin, all older, are gone. It’s one of those persistent small-town mysteries.”“Well, people don’t just disappear off the face of the earth.” Alicia twirled a fresh bit of broccoli.“The Black Dahlia,” BoomBoom countered.“You’re right, to a degree,” said Alicia. “ ’Course, I wasn’t in Hollywood then. And she didn’t disappear, Sweetie. They never found the killer.”“You’re right.” BoomBoom got up and walked over to the window, nose almost on the windowpane. “It’s really coming down now. We’d all better head home.”“Let me help you clean up,” Harry offered.“A tray of vegetables and a couple of glasses? Anyway, no power, no water. Go on. If your cellphones don’t work you can still text if you have a Droid.”Arden said, “I hope the Silver Linings fund-raiser isn’t canceled.”“We’ll cross our fingers.” Charlene crossed hers. After a long, careful drive, Harry slowly finally drove down her long farm driveway, windshield wipers flipping as fast as they could. She pulled in front of the old white frame farmhouse, cut the motor, the lights with it.Golden candlelight cascaded over the snow. The frosted windows glowed pale gold, the wavy imperfections of the handblown glass all the more obvious with the candles behind her.“Mom’s home.” Inside the house, Tucker the corgi barked joyfully.Pewter flopped on the kitchen table, lifted her head. “About time.”Mrs. Murphy, the tiger cat, walked alongside Fair, Harry’s husband, as he opened the kitchen door to the porch. He carried a huge flashlight, which he focused on the path to the back porch, screened-in in summer, glassed-in in winter.“Honey, I’m glad you’re home.” He stepped into the snow.“Fair, get back inside. I can see.”He didn’t, of course, kissing her as she hurried onto the porch, Tucker and Mrs. Murphy at her feet.

From the first book onwards I enjoyed the highjinks of that wise cat, Tucker the corgi and Pewter the catitude queen. The humans in the series, from heroine Harry and her husband Fair have always seemed like good friends and I have looked forward to each successive chapter. There were times in the more recent books when I felt that Rita Mae Brown(and dare I say Sneaky Pie) were getting a bit preachy about some social and political issues. It did not make me stop reading but it did dull some of the pleasure.I am delighted to say that with NINE LIVES TO DIE, the dyanmic duo is back. I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in less than a day.It is good to see my friends back in form and I would give this two paws up, five purrs and a rousing recommendation.

First sentence turn-off By budg1946 This is perhaps my favorite series; however, the last few novels have evidenced none of the vivid descriptions of the natural environment that evoke the feeling of being in and sharing in the lovely Virginia town of Crozet. I have wondered if they were being penned, or if the author just became tired of the series and was unwilling to put much time into recent offerings. That saddened me. I was anxious to see if this had changed. When the first paragraph "renamed" Harry as Harriett, rather than Mary Minor, I became certain that this was a series that had been basically abandoned by the author. Sad. Anytime this changes, I will be back on board. Some of the most enjoyable reading I have ever encountered. Rita Mae Brown is a treasure.

Skeletons and severed fingers By cathairetic When Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, and Tucker (two cats and a dog) meet a coyote carrying off a skeletal human arm, they manage to snag a beautiful gold bracelet that falls from it. This will be their Christmas present for their "Mom," Mary Minor Haristeen. They find the rest of the skeleton in the roots of a blown over walnut tree. They manage to get the attention of Harry (Mary Minor) and her husband, Fair, who drive up the mountain in response to Tucker's barking and the howling of the coyote. This skeleton is one of the mysteries in this book. The second is who killed two wealthy businessmen who contributed greatly to a local children's charity. Some readers think that author Rita Mae Brown is often too preachy about causes she likes to mention in her novels. I do not think she does this in this one. It's true, there are a few minor mentions, but I found any opinions expressed by the characters to be just common sense. I really enjoyed the interactions of all the animal characters and since I live in Virginia I found her comments about living in Virginia very funny and too true. For once I guessed who did what and that is very unusual for me. I highly recommend this entry in the series. It is also interesting to see how "the other half" lives. I liked reading that Harry doesn't want to spend any money on the clothing she needs for fancy fund raisers, but she wears the most expensive perfume in the world. Enjoy!
