Ms. Shepherd begins the book with the story of Jack who forgot to make a fuel check before he took off from Miami to Fort Pierce. After a short period of time in the air he quickly realized his mistake, he was going down. The problem was there was no safe place to land. However at that moment a parishioner got the burden to pray for Jack. Suddenly a freshly plowed field appeared and Jack was safely able to land the plane with no damage and he walked away. The parishioner prayed at exactly the moment that Jack was in great need. His ordeal lasted a half hour, the parishioner prayed for the same length of time. "Called to Pray" by Linda Evans Shepherd is one of the special ones. This book is extremely inspiring. In each chapter are personal experiences about someone in some sort of struggle. For example, there is a coughing and choking incident, a weather catastrophe, money problems, wedding problems and accidents. In these stories, there is a person who has this strong urge to pray for the one in trouble. It is like God or God's Holy Spirit personally taps them on the shoulder and says "pray now!"I liked these personal examples. I also liked the petitions at the end of the chapters. The prayers seem like ones I have needed in the past or might need in the future. The prayers are short. Although not lengthy, these prayers are also examples of praises to God, and they also point to our weaknesses, places in our lives that still need pruning. In one prayer, the person asks for God to use them in the lives of other people. Since I am one who likes many tiny bits of scriptural references in my book, this book is perfect. There are scripture references at the beginning of the chapter and throughout the chapter.Since I liked the Bible translation used in Call to Pray, I wanted to know which Bible Linda Evans Shepherd used while writing the book. It took a while to find the translation. I wish the Bible translation had been easier to find and not in such small print. However, the Bible translation chosen made old scriptures look new and were far more easier to understand than the ones written in my present Bible. I am reminded of Romans 9:27-28. It is in the chapter entitled Name Tag Prayer.I am left thinking of the Introduction. In Colossians 4:2, I spotted my idea of a three step plan: devotion, watchfulness and thankfulness. I am grateful to have been given this wonderful book of prayer with so many exciting examples of answered prayer. As Izumi's feelings for Ryoma grow, he worries his life is going to become like a BL manga, and he will be the uke. He starts researching boys' love by reading BL manga! It's great fun, and really sweet to watch these two interact.We also get to more of Shugo and Rei's relationship. I really hope SuBLime gets the rights to publish Back Stage!! which is about those two, But anyway, Love Stage!! is a great, light-hearted series I recommend to any BL fan.

Fun characters and good-hearted encounters By Johanna Draper Carlson Over the past two books, Izumi has come to terms with his burgeoning feelings for Ryoma. I imagine that the typical yaoi fan is something like Ryoma: comfortable with boy/boy interaction because they’re in love with the situation. Me, I sympathize more with Izumi — it’s the feelings and characters that matter to me, and I’m not always comfortable with the more explicit scenes (which have been fairly few so far).Izumi has given in to his fate and accepted that he’s bound to become a celebrity… which usually seems to involve him dressing as a woman. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of publicity interest in actor Ryoma’s “secret lover”. At a press conference, it all comes out.It’s the weird encounters in the world of fame that keep me entertained by this series. Izumi is basically famous for being famous… and for looking good as a member of the opposite sex. I guess it doesn’t take much more to briefly seize the imagination of today’s celeb-conscious culture, and at least super-manager Rei realizes that his lack of talent will eventually become an issue. (Rei is amazing, since he also ends up giving Izumi sex advice! Apparently, he’s a lead character in the spin-off light novel series, where he’s involved with Izumi’s older brother.)The increased attention brings the couple’s feelings for each other out, making them finally confess honestly to each other, although first we get a sequence where Izumi, like Clark Kent, isn’t recognized as being famous so long as he keeps his glasses on. Of course, that trick doesn’t work for long, and some life-threatening danger is apparently just what he needed to be clear for himself about how he feels. I’m not sure where Love Stage!! will go next, as we turn an important corner this installment, but I’m curious to find out more. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun By Amazon Customer Classic yaoi story with a 'uke' who doesn't get on my nerves. I have read my fair share of manga, and those popular yaoi have those reluctant bottom characters who just get on my nerves. I get the whole genre and the idea that the reluctant character is cute, but not for ten to twenty volumes. Thus far that has not happened to Izumi and I am hoping he does not go the way of characters like Misaki and Onodera from Junjou Romantica and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi. Ryoma doesn't come off as too much of a jerk, like other tops do, either, which is nice. Yes, he needed an aft-kicking, but he got it quickly and now the two seem to be dealing well, but only three volumes are out, so that means volume four could go either way. We will just have to wait to see if this series will tank or be better than the ones that are so popular.

Brilliance, as expected from the mind of He Who Reveres "Night of the Lepus" By Kitty Smith For too long it has been believed that on the seventh day, God decided to rest in his recliner with a bowl of wings while watching the Cowboys play. F. A. Tallahassee explodes the myth and brings us the truth at last. Instead of screaming at a blind ref and ogling the cheerleaders, God was kicking it old school on earth, enjoying the sun and the sound of the waves while catching a well deserved snooze. Or at least he was until King Kong decided to flick him into the sand like a three day old booger. More than once. At this point it was game on, the weapons of choice being an assortment of sand, bananas, and the resulting banana gas. Then things got biblical.The second story involves a Pteranadon barman named Ranadon working at the Armageddon Cafe, and an assortment of dinosaurs, robots, sea monsters, and assorted other creatures of land and sea. It's a monster mash of epic proportions and if you love old monster movies half as much as I do you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wonder just how much pharmaceutical product is getting into the public water supply these days. I tip my ivory top hat to you, Tallahassee.

By Amazon Customer I really am wary of short stories because they tend to make my head spin with the speed of events, missing a lot in the process. These are different. I think the love and support helped just as much as the medications to heal Rose! Highly recommend this read and for anyone going through the tough battle of cancer, this book is an eye opener. Written not only by a spouse, but a medical physician, who gives insight into what to expect and how to combat the onslaught of drugs!

Orwell's best novel By Susan Paxton It's a shame that George Orwell's two best-known novels, "Animal Farm" and "Nineteen Eighty Four" are neither one his best novel. The peak of Orwell's fiction is this almost forgotten novel, "Coming Up for Air." Set in the last few years before a World War II that was obviously looming on the horizon, this elegant book memorably chronicles the life of George Bowling and his attempt to escape domesticity and the horrors to come for a few days by visiting his old home town. Every time I reread "Coming Up for Air," I wonder what Orwell might have achieved if he had lived longer and had not been as ill as he was in the ten years that remained to him. If all you've read of Orwell is his two "famous" novels, you owe it to yourself to read this.

His gift as a reporter may just be the talent he needed to...pawn off his own life as fiction.This fabulous novel documents the mid-life crisis of an aging and bloated insurance salesman who vaguely remembers a time when people weren't scared of war and believed that most of life's more visible elements would endure without end.This isn't a comming of age story, its more of a passing of an age story. The miracle here is the incredible emotion the reader feels as "Tubby" recalls his youth and the passing of his parents...events he barely aknowledged as they happened...and while they don't quite haunt him now, he wonders how he lost them.Set in pre-war (WWII) England, the spectre of Hitler and Stalin always loom large in the background as our hero decides to go after the fishing hole he never got back to 20 years ago.It probably doesn't matter whether or not the fishing hole is still there, only that we realized that it needed to be found again.Like all Orwell, as touching and emotional as this effort is, it is never dire or heavy. This is a quick and rewarding read, and, I am guessing, more autobiographical than the author would have us believe.It is a shame that Orwell is known these days only for the monumental works high-school students are forced to read. As unlikely as it seems, the man who penned the brutal "1984" has also written a wonderful collection of light reflections that should not go unread. Consider "Burmese Days" and "A Clergy Man's Daughter" as well.

Schneider Oddly, the pocket book cover quotes the NYT that this book is a 'charming ... minor masterpiece'. It took me a while to realize that this is exactly the case.The novel is set in London in 1938, with WW2 looming. It was Orwell's first novel after risking his life in Catalonia. It was his last novel before Animal Farm. He still had ambitions to play in James Joyce's league as a novelist. He greatly admired Ulysses. In a way, his George Fatty Bowling is Orwell's Leo Bloom in London. But not quite. As charming as the novel is, it is also the final proof that Orwell was not the great novelist that he would have wished to be. He was a great essayist. Even his two later masterpieces, Animal Farm and 1984, essentially demonstrate that he was in first place an essayist and a man with a message.Coming up for Air is the monologue of a middle aged middle class man who takes a break from his oppressive family and job life. He is the antisocial character who paints his front door green, where all others are blue. He escapes for an outing and 'comes up for air'.The story is told by the hero in an odd mixture of stream of consciousness and autobiography. One might say, Orwell told parts of his own life story. And that is the crux of the matter: he remains the intellectual who sympathizes with the proles and despises the upward ambitions of the lower middle classes.The book is a failure insofar as Orwell never manages to let Bowling speak. Bowling is just a pretext for Orwell's own words.The book is not a failure, because what Orwell has to tell us of England between 1893 and 1938 is well worth knowing. Bowling should be an uninteresting man, by all criteria, but Orwell fails to let him bore us.

Joel Lawhead

Joel Lawhead is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of NVisionSolutions Inc., an award-winning firm that specializes in geospatial technology integration and sensor engineering. Joel began using Python in 1997 and began combining it with geospatial software development in 2000. He is the author of Learning Geospatial Analysis with Python, Packt Publishing. His Python cookbook recipes were featured in two editions of Python Cookbook, O'Reilly Media. He is also the developer of the widely used, open source Python Shapefile Library (PyShp) and maintains the geospatial technical blog GeospatialPython.com and the Twitter feed @SpatialPython, which discuss the use of the Python programming language within the geospatial industry. In 2011, Joel reverse engineered and published the undocumented shapefile spatial indexing format and assisted fellow geospatial Python developer, Marc Pfister, in reversing the algorithm used, allowing developers around the world to create better-integrated and more robust geospatial applications involving shapefiles. Joel served as the lead architect, project manager, and co-developer for geospatial applications used by US government agencies, including NASA, FEMA, NOAA, the US Navy, and many other commercial and non-profit organizations. In 2002, he received the international Esri Special Achievement in GIS award for his work on the Real-Time Emergency Action Coordination Tool (REACT), for emergency management using geospatial analysis.

It's pretty straightforward and well-organized By Josiah I'm learning PyQGIS while working on a project, and have found this book to a good resource. It's pretty straightforward and well-organized. I like how it breaks down exercises into compact parts, a few paragraphs, with sciprts that dont rely upon variables or data referenced prior in the book. I also use the PyQGIS Developer Cookbook, which is also pretty great (and free!), but it does have a few typos here and there, and build scripts up with variables used much earlier. Perhaps because I'm a beginner to PyQGIS and Python, the Joel Lawhead books is more appealing. I especially like chapter 3's coverage of how to add a field to a vector layer, as well as chapt 8's workflow coverage, especially the part on collecting field data.With Open Source and technology, you'll still have to rely upon Stack Exchange and other online resources but it's nice to have a comprehensive book availabe too. Now, I just wish the amazing and wondeful QGIS development team would bring back the 'export as python script' option in Graphical Modeler. That way you could quickly see what your model looks like coded out, and reverse engineer your own code.I'm still working my way through this book, but it's proving to be useful, and probably worth checking out if you're working with PyQGIS.

The first one is Erik Westra’s Building Mapping Applications with QGIS. If you are new to PyQGIS and want to get started quickly I suggest you look into these two books, instead of the many convoluted, incomplete, and often outdated tutorials on the web or in other books. I personally started with Erik Westra’s book, which within in a few days, clarified a lot of thing to me. Then I looked into this book. Once you know the basics of PyQGIS and how it all works, this book is a great resource to boost your skills and learn many tricks. Because, let’s be honest, not everyone is capable of looking at the C++ QGIS documentation and translating it quickly into Python. Reading the documentation is not only a matter of translating C++ datatypes etc., which is actually the easy part, but it is more a matter of understanding how it all fits together. This is often not as clear as it is with other libraries, such as the much more intuitive ArcPy. This book fills in many of those gaps. The level of detail is very enjoyable, as many of the recipes describe each line of code in great detail, even sometimes when it seems unnecessary.After a general intro to PyQGIS and setting up environments and an IDE (Eclipse, using PyDev), Chapter 2 and 3 are all about vector data. From simply loading data, to querying data, to creating layers in memory, to adding and removing features, to joining attributes; it is all in there. If you work a lot with vector data these two chapters will either teach you how to accomplish many common tasks or they will inspire you to look into new things.Chapter 4 goes into raster data, and although that is not the focus of my work, it seems like if features some very useful recipes, such as swapping raster bands, reprojecting, building pyramids and classification. I know these are things that are commonly asked about in forums.Chapter 5 covers dynamic maps, which talks a lot about accessing and working with the canvas, most likely one of the most commonly used features when working with PyQGIS. It also goes into topics such as creating graduated symbol renderers (again, something that is asked on forums a lot), using charts, and building tools that directly use the canvas (such as a selection tool, or placing points on the map).Chapter 6 then talks about making static maps, so basically it is about doing in a programmatic way what you would manually do using the Print Composer. Again, this is not the focus of what I do but I can tell you that this is a fairly little talked about topic in other resources. I was not aware this was even possible until I looked into this book.Chapter 7 teaches you how to interact with users, that is, how to work with message bars and dialogs. But it also covers other very useful recipes, such as programming a progress bar or using radio buttons and checkboxes.Chapter 8 touches upon more advanced topics, such as NDVI, geocoding addresses, tracking a GPS device and performing nearest neighbor analysis or heat maps. Perhaps not the things you do on a daily basis, but nevertheless it is very convenient to have these recipes. Although not all are directly relevant to me I thought this was still an inspiring chapter as it showed me some possibilities of PyGIS that I had not thought about.The final chapter, Chapter 9, is a collection of random tips and tricks that do not directly fit any of the other chapters.All in all, I would say that this is most likely the most useful PyQGIS book out at this point, although if you are a complete beginner I highly suggest you look into Erik Westra’s book as well, which will teach you the necessary basics and many more advanced topics as well. If you own these two books you will not have to look into any other ones.The downsides? No serious downsides, but the only thing that might be missing is a chapter on PyQt. Although PyQt is used in a few recipes, I feel like that it is one of the most important parts if one works a lot with PyQGIS, especially once one is building plugins. Although not directly part of the QGIS API, I feel like a lot of readers would be incredibly thankful for an entire chapter on it.Another little piece of advice: this book should probably contain ’PyQGIS’ in the title, such as ‘PyQGIS Programming Cookbook’, because a lot of us actually browse the web for things like ‘PyQGIS book’, which usually returns some of the less useful resources.

By Grady Harp Pat Silver-Lasky has written another little novel that is bursting at the seams in digging dirt of every imaginable type. And that is exactly what she has set out to do. She has been through years of Hollywood as a star, a director and a writer of screenplays (of note, she authored SCREENWRITING FOR THE 21st CENTURY!) so she has the credentials to make this tale story of two American screenwriters encountering more dazzling data than is imaginable. Pat understands comedy - both sides of the mask - and has succeeded in offering another hilarious (with a bite) foray into the world of filmdom.Pat offers an Introduction that truly sets the pace: `Meet Jefferson Thwaite, Jr. and Jean Varry, who were young and in love; a husband/wife writing team brought up in the movie business. All they wanted was an honest job equal to their talents. But the way things were, they were almost out of the business - until they met Supersharks, Pandora and Mat. Children’s Bibles, teen friendly Bibles, and Bibles I wonder where they came from. Many were gifts, others I purchased along my own journey.When Eugene Peterson’s The Message first hit the shelves in October of 2002, there was a collective sigh of relief. People who had challenges reading any of the many translations of the Bible, now had, as Peterson himself calls it, a paraphrase of the Bible in today’s language.The Message is one of the many Bibles I own. Mine is a small, compact Bible. I bought it when I started Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at the University of Virginia. I needed a Bible that would fit in my white lab coat pocket.Much as The Living Bible paraphrase a generation before had drawn people closer to God, so The Message does so. The gift of the paraphrase is that you are able to delve deep in the text, like a story. I loved reading the Bible in The Message and then going back to my more familiar translations and reading with a new perspective. I found that I'd often been missing out on the nuances of the original language until I read The Message and saw how Eugene Peterson brought the language to life. Now, Peterson offers The Message 100 Devotional Bible, laying out the 'story' of the Bible in unbroken timeline sequence and offered in 100 separate readings.We do have a way of trying to restrict God to language that sounds holy and formal, when in reality much of Scripture itself was written in the daily, everyday language of the people. Jesus made Himself accessible to the people. So, The Message does the same. It doesn't claim to be a study Bible. It does, however, attempt to invite everyone into God's Word and then encourage them to investigate and study and dig in deep to God's Word, to absorb it, meditate on it, chew on it, and make it a part of them.This devotional Bible is offered in the same vein as The Story and several other Bible studies that attempt to connect Scripture into one clear unbroken thread from creation to the cross to Christ's return. It would be particularly suitable for teens, young adults, new Christians and anyone who hasn't read the Bible through, but who wants an introduction to God's Word.
