Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"Where was this book when I was first ordained? Ultrapractical and stuffed full of timeless wisdom, this is a book I will recommend often and reread regularly."-- Tim Challies, author of The Next Story; pastor of Grace Fellowship Church"I wish The New Pastor's Handbook had been available when I was starting out. Thirty-nine years on, it is a helpful reminder to do the basics. I commend it enthusiastically."--Alistair Begg, senior pastor of Parkside Church "If you are sensing a call to ministry or in the early years of ministry, this book is a must read. Pastor Helopoulos shows us how we are to be not only shepherds of God's flock but also, more fundamentally, shepherds of our own hearts and homes. I want to get this into the hands of every seminary student and every new pastor to the end that Jesus Christ might be glorified in our love and care of his bride."--Burk Parsons, copastor of Saint Andrew's Chapel; editor of Tabletalk magazine"Jason Helopoulos has written a modern classic that will prove to be as helpful as The Christian Ministry by Charles Bridges has been since 1830. Every new or young pastor should consider this required reading as they follow God's call in their life to serve the church."--Joe Thorn, lead pastor of Redeemer Fellowship"So who is helping younger pastors these days, especially in their first church? It is hard to come up with a name or two. Well, you can add Jason Helopoulos to the list. Jason has a burden to reach out and help younger pastors, and he can help you too in The New Pastor's Handbook."--Aubrey Malphurs, professor of leadership and pastoral ministries at Dallas Theological Seminary; founder of the Malphurs Group

If the graduate you love just completed seminary, I have great news: your searching is done.Baker Publishing just released a new book by Jason Helopoulos entitled The New Pastor’s Handbook: Help and Encouragement for the First Years of Ministry. From the very first page, it is obvious that Helopoulos has heard a lot of tried-and-true ministry advice, and it is obvious he has paid attention. This book’s particular strength, though, is pitching classic pastoral advice directly at the new pastor. Certainly, a newly minted MDiv graduate will have Spurgeon’s and Lloyd-Jones’ books for ministers on their shelves. But with 48 chapters in under 200 pages, Helopoulos’ book will be the one they actually read. The New Pastor’s Handbook feels a bit like a “blog you can hold.” And this fits its target demographic well.No book can cover every topic. For example, I would have liked to have read Helopoulos’ thoughts regarding personal and corporate evangelism. But each chapter clear and candid, well-conceived and well-written. And when you pair these meditations with the outstanding bibliography, you have a wonderful resource to give to your new pastor.

With The New Pastor's Handbook: Help and Encouragement for the First Years of Ministry, Jason Helopoulos has written a helpful book that I expect will become required reading in many evangelical seminaries. The angle of this book is to walk through a handful of issues that a new pastor will face in his first years in ministry. The issue is not so much a series of case studies about what to do when you have a tough situation as instead a stark assessment of the fact that you sure will have tough situations to deal with, and those tough situations do not mean you have failed as a pastor. The overall approach here is very gentle, matching the book's subtitle of being "Help and Encouragement." It's very easy to come into ministry and expect that it will simply be a matter of coming in and conquering new territory for the Lord. The fact is, as a pastor you are dealing with real people - which is simply another way of saying sinners. You'll come fact to face with their sin, including ways they will personally disappoint you and betray you. The fact that the sinners in your church still sin doesn't make you a failure as a pastor.Over and over, Helopoulos comes back to the amazing privilege and indescribable rewards of being a pastor. It is a lofty role indeed. And just as frequently, he reminds the new pastor of the real fuel of his ministry: the pastor's personal walk with Jesus. The book consists in 48 chapters which are probably 3-4 pages each, and while I read them probably 5-10 at a time, it would be profitable to read these one at a time, perhaps each morning as one begins a day of ministry. I think this is a book that would reward multiple readings.I would highly recommend using this as an introduction to the pastoral ministry, and then using some of the "Practical Shepherding" series by Brian Croft as a more detailed supplement for actual "how to do this" type advice. Finally, Tripp's Dangerous Calling is a great examination of the pastor's heart. Each of these is incredibly valuable and worth space on the new pastor's bookshelf.I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Baker in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review, but I do so gladly!

In The New Pastor’s Handbook by Jason Helopoulos has provided a valuable resource for young pastors and seasoned pastors as well. This book has many strengths to commend it. Each of the 48 chapters are simple and concise. Though short each chapter displays a depth of thought. One should not mistake shortness of the chapters for a lack of content, the author is to be commended for his ability to write with such laser-focus on the different aspects of pastoral ministry. The book is divided into five sections. The first section addresses understanding calling and finding a place of service, the second addresses different types of roles one might begin pastoral ministry in, the third practices and patterns for pastors, the fourth potential dangers of ministry, and the fifth and final section covers the joys that we are to find in ministry. Many books published on pastoral ministry are little more than “how-to” guides. This book seeks to shape the new pastor’s understanding of himself and the task set before him. This book addresses many of the heart issues behind pastoral ministry that many young pastors don’t learn until it’s too late.I have personally benefited from this book, and I am confident that any pastor new or old would benefit from this book as well. While this book is geared toward those out in ministry there are many aspects that even the most seasoned pastor would benefit from. I heartily agree with Joe Thorn’s statement that this is a modern classic. If you know a pastor, youth pastor, associate pastor, church planter, or anyone aspiring to ministry I would recommend you buy this book for them, they and those they minister to will be thankful that you did.Disclosure: I received this book free from Baker Books through the Baker Books Bloggers www.bakerbooks.com/bakerbooksbloggers program.
